  1. When I used this tool to export the new VHL ROM to a CSV, it leaves out some players? (Well at least one: Ovechkin. But I figure if there is one left out, perhaps there are more?) The vast majority of players, which it does export, are in tact and uncorrupted. Any reason why some players would fail to export? The ROM usd is "NHL16v8.bin" from http://forum.nhl94.com/index.php/topic/17330-nhl16-rom-midseason-update-by-skip/
  2. Ha, looking at your page I realize I probably got my thoughts on those attributes based on perusing it before! So thanks! One thing that stands out is "Aggression", where you mention "This is a leftover attribute from ’93. Determines how likely a player is to fight. Unsure if this does anything in ’94." I know for certain I always notice my same guys taking most of the penalties, and just assumed those guys must have high "aggression" ratings? But maybe this is determined by another stat, or even a hidden stat?
  3. Ok, so I now underdtand checking, and I already understood H/F (which was a tricky one). Can you fine people help me to understand: ENDURANCE: Hmm... I do not think this applies to games with line changes off, right? AGGRESSION: Hmmm.... I think this is the likelihood that a player will take a penalty? (I am not sure if it applies to CPU-only, or even coach controlled players doing checks?) ROUGHNESS: Hmmm... I think I read somewhere that this is shooting bias? Meaning how often a CPU-controlled player shoots? (A guy like Gretzky would have a low Roughness.) Do I have these right? Or can someone correct or expand?
  4. Got it. Thanks Raph, Smozoma and jer_33, I now have a solid understanding of checking and the weight bug fix for the VHL ROM. Much appreciated.
  5. So, to be clear, Ovechkin with his 12.9 checking rating will have a successful check against anyone who weighs 11 or less, right?(The 11 is his 13 - 2...)
  6. Ok thanks for the info, Smozoma and Raph. I did read through that thread now. However, I stil have two questions I did not see answered there: 1. Does high checking rating (or anything else?) have an impact (pun intended) on likelihood of injury, or how long someone might stay down? (I am pretty sure players all stay down the same amount of time, but want to make sure. The injury part of this Q was asked in the thread above, but I think ignored?) 2. What is the formula for a successful check? (I am trying to determine how "checking rating" factors into things? Like what is it weighed against? I am sure it is not Attacking Checking Rating - Receiving Checking Rating, because ability to take a check is different than ability to deliver one? Then again in real life half the time somebody tries to check Ovechkin the checker ends up going down instead of OV, so maybe?) If this info was there, I missed it. (I did see NYI80-83 propose their own formula using a mysterious "balance" attribute, but Smozoma said it was flawed.)
  7. Can you expand on this? It uses checking number and weight -- and only those two -- to figure out checking ability, right? Ovechkin has a weight of 11, and a checking ability of 5, and his checking rating = 12.9? What is the formula to arrive at 12.9? Also, is there just two results for checking success, pass or fail? Or does a higher rating mean more likely to injure, or to keep a guy on the ice longer?
  8. EDIT: I am going to update this first message as I come to understand the different ROM stats in VHL... CHECKING: This is a rating of 2 things: i. the frequency that a CPU-controlled player will check; ii. the checking skill of a player (checking and weight together are used to determine success of a check) (see thread below for detailed notes) H/F: This is the handedness. Odd numbers mean shoots right, 0 and even numbers means shoots left. (The higher the number equates to fighting skill, though this is not used for NHL'94) ROUGHNESS: Left over from '93, but now used as passing bias? Meaning how often a CPU-controlled player shoots? (A guy like Gretzky would have a high "Roughness" because he is inclined to pass over shooting.) ENDURANCE: Not used. AGGRESSION: As far as can be determined, not used. ---------------- Here is my original first message sking about checking: Hi Skip, I need some help deciphering stats in the ROM. Let's start with checking. I understand checking originally meant not how good a checker a player was, but rather how often he would check when controlled by CPU, right? Low numbers meant less. But with the "Smozoma Blitz ROM" fix, now checking actually means how good a player checks, right? Does it also still mean what it used to? So a player with a zero checking rating will not check much when CPU-controlled, and further when you control him and try to C-Check he will also suck at it? (I have other questions, but let's start there. I need to understand things better to draft properly.)
  9. EDIT: I made a separate thread for the message I originally posted here: http://forum.nhl94.com/index.php/topic/17397-deciphering-rom-stats/ (Because it warranted its own thread instead of getting buried at the end of this one.)
  10. This is my 3rd league. Last two I completed 100%. I have played everyone in my schedule except for Florida coached by Vocally Caged. We have 4 games... Trouble is, he has only played 16 games total. Pretty sure he is dead last completion-wise. VC, you there? Can we schedule our 4?
  11. Great video! More polished than I was expecting. I will check out your other stuff now, too! Thanks!
  12. Drop passes Fake Shots (If I remember correctly... only played it about half a day)
  13. Thanks, HABS... So here are some milestones: 2005 - Cr0ssbar invents/discovers Pass Shot 2006 - Smozoma fleshes out concept of Weight Bug 2014 - Plabax invents/discovers CB check I am sure there are other things between 2007 and 2013, but I don't know what they are...
  14. Mikey, I gotta ask, is there any chance of this happening??? (You are the man making the connections, and a guy who gets thing done, so if anyone could facilitate it, it is you!! So I had to ask!) Or is this just a fantasy scenario???
  15. ENHANCEMENTS * Add drop passes * Add fake Slapshots (hit C again un-does it) * Add saucer pass when you hold B longer * Add players being able to block shots (goes along with saucer passes) * Add deflections in front of net * Improve AI so forwards with high DA will drop back to cover up for a pinching D-man * Add 2 player "Best of 7" series option (that tracks stats) * Add goal celebrations for some flamboyant players (there could be an hidden attribute that determines someones celebration level.... OT goal gives this a bump) FIXES * fix goalie force field * fix goalie invincibilty *** Regarding these goalie fixes, there is no force field in real life, so there shouldn't be one in the game. And goalies should be able to get checked, and not be some sort of monster that sends a trail of players in their wake. (And of course, checking a goalie should result in a penalty.) Maybe make it so the further out a goalie goes, the shakier they are (less control) and less likely to draw penalties if bumped?
  16. Which has nothing to do with anything. Brutus is the commish, so it is his decision who gets in. (And I am guessing it is not looking promising.)
  17. So can anyone shed some light on when the weight bug truly became understood? I kinda thought it was Smozoma who really figured it out, because I have read his posts on fixing this glitch by editing the ROM, but he didn't chime in on this point at all? Was the weight bug fully understood before this forum came into being? If not, can we put a finger on who really laid it out in how we undertstand it today? Or was it Smozoma, and if yes, about when?
  18. If you revealed who this fella is, it would inspire more fitting questions, perhaps?
  19. Is it Roenick? Close up on Jeremy Roenick's face and ask: Are you aware that you are regarded as the #1 player n NHL'94? Close up on Jeremy Roenick's face and ask: Are you aware that there was a weight bug glitch, which made light players good checkers, and that is a big part of why you are #1? (Although "notorious" makes me think it's a goon.)
  20. You know, I think the SNES version is so much cleaner because it was really a copy of the original GENS game. The GENS was the original work of art, and made whole cloth from scratch. As a truly creative endeavor, I bet there were many missteps, and inefficiencies, and I bet the code was messy! But the SNES guys just had to emulate something that existed, not make something wholly original, and I bet the code is much neater and efficient. If you analysed the Mona Lisa, I bet you could find all sorts of irregularities and mistakes. Whereas, a talented painter could make a reproduction in half the time that would be cleaner and error free. That's how I look at it, anyway.
  21. What year are we looking at approximately? Or did he come into community already doing them in the wild? (I will do some searches too, now that I have a name.) Hopefully Plabax can reply himself here, but I am wondering what year they were discovered, HOW they were discovered (did he mistakenly hit B after a check? Or have an inkling somehow and tried it deliberately?) ANd, did he keep the discovery to himself for a bit? (Nothing wrong with that, IMO.) Funny you mention this because I just played EA for the first time ever, and did notice how much he does this. In GDL, I have the "Rubber Man" Kelly Hrudey, and it frustrated me to no end. (Though I find it funny a couple day's removed. ) Still, I don't see this technique very commonly, and it doesn't seem like a huge exploit or game changer. (Though I do appreciate you mentioning it. )
  22. Hello and Good Day! I am amazed at how things continue to be discovered about this ancient game. And not little quirks, but major game changers. If you know other big Game Changers please add them, but I think the big 3 are: 1. The discovery of the weight bug 2. Pass Shots 3. CB Checks When was each discovered, and by whom? What other big game changers can I add to the list? I am sure people knew from the beginning that guys like Fleury and Roenick were great checkers, but I would like to know when someone really pieced together "Aha! A glitch reverses player weights in the checking calculation, but only for non CPU controlled players". Similarly, I scored pass shots accidentally in 1995, but who here pioneered scoring with them -- and different varieties of them -- as a real strategy, first? Finally, the genius of the CB check? Was it crafty Plabax that figured that one out? When? Did other people notice he seems to be able to check with fat guys, or did he share the knowledge from the get-go? (This would be a great gem to keep to yourself for awhile, methinks!)
  23. Hey Raph, the above quote is from http://nhl94strategy.com/?page_id=101 which is your site, right? This isn't quite right, is it? You really only have to know the weights of your own players. If they are light, you do C checks. If they are heavy, you do CB checks? The weights of the guys they are checking won't change how your guys should check, right? (I won't be surprised if I have this wrong, but this is how it seems to me? And the less I have to keep track of the better, so I sure hope I am right!)
