Is it legal?

In my understanding it's legal to download the game for your own use as long as you own the original game yourself.

Also I think downloading emulators is legal. I don't think distributing the games as a whole is legal though. For updates to be legal to distribute it would have to be done via IPS patch.

It is also legal, because games 10 years or older, and that aren't commercialised anymore are pretty much considered Abandonware. Unless the owners specify they want to keep rights, and publish games or games linked with that game, it's legal.

thats a shame.

As long a modified rom isnt being sold for commercial purposes, I dont see how it could negatively affect the company. Big bs.

Yeah, the worst part about that story is that the company/lawyers waited until the last week of a multi-year volunteer project before shutting them down, right before they were going to release it. Surely they knew about the project at least months ahead of time (I did).

The impression I get is that EA is OK with this site and community, though, which is great. They added NHL94 to NHL2006 on the PS2 (unfortunately using made-up player names instead of using current players), and I think that arcade-style 3-on-3 game might have been influenced by this site. If you play the new games, they also have an "NHL 94" simplified control scheme.

Its lame they couldn't keep 94 in all the new versions, with maybe some enhanced graphics and current nhl players. That would be amazing.

And obviously pretty easy for them to do.

They could do it the same way Capcom did with Megaman 9 and 10, so I'd say it's quite possible they can do that. Just remember to have your credit card in hand.

Actually, it wouldn't surprise me our friends over at NHL 2004, would get sued or threatened by Doucebag Electronics (EA).

Even tough they don't bother adding all the details those guys do (Not having stupid ugly generic goalie masks is a nifty touch)

NHL 2004 was made by EA....what are they gonna do, sue themselves?
