CamKneely Posted January 30, 2011 Report Share Posted January 30, 2011 The Devils stormed into Edmonton, hungry to hold on to their momentum after their play-in round mastery, and it seemed like this might be another cakewalk as Mario Lemieux scored 58 seconds into game one. He scored again 12 seconds later, and people all over Edmonton were starting to feel tightness in their throats. These feelings were short lived, however, as Geoff Courtnall would open the scoring for his team with 11 seconds to go in the first. The Devils wouldn't recover from this, as Chris Chelios scored 33 seconds into the second, followed by the game winner from Courtnall 25 seconds later. Goals from Muller and Kamensky rounded out the scoring as the Devils trudged to the locker room in defeat, wondering if their season-long failure to hold leads would once again come back to haunt them in the playoffs. Courtnall would score again to open game two, 1:43 in. Cheveldae couldn't get a handle on him, and the Devils defense was clueless. Lemieux would score to tie it two minutes later, but Kirk Muller would then score to restore the Oilers lead. Kelly Miller then became the first Devil not named Lemieux to score in the series, with 28 seconds left in the second. It wasn't clear at this point whether the Devils were merely holding serve, or they'd finally capture a bit of momentum, but the latter would prove true in the third. Luc Robitaille scored unassisted 1:13 in, followed by an unassisted goal from Fredrik Olausson. The game appeared to be in hand for the Devils, but Kirk Muller would score late to give the Oilers fans a bit of hope; it would ultimately not make a difference as the Devils won 4-3. As the series shifted back to New Jersey, experts wondered whether or not the amazing Mario Lemieux could take the series by the throat and choke the life out of the Oilers, as after he scored the first two goals of the series in short order, the Devils squandered a lead and he didn't contribute greatly to their game two victory. The experts didn't seem so expert this time as Lemieux scored the first four goals of the game. The third goal was his best of the series, as he cut into the Oilers zone shorthanded, fired a pass off of the shin of Chris Chelios, collected the puck back onto his stick, and beat an overmatched Wendell Young. Kirk Muller's two goals were an afterthought as Lemieux finished with 5, adding 2 assists. Lemieux refused to let the Oilers back into the series, as a natural hat trick prior to the 3 minute mark of the first would prove. Robitaille would score to make it 4-0 Devils. Shortly after, Kirk Muller would once again try his hand at matching Lemieux, as he would score then set up a goal from Gord Murphy. Lemieux scored 9 seconds into the third to end the Oilers' rally, rendering Kamensky's late goal moot. A total team effort got the Devils through game 5 in Edmonton. In front of a stunned crowd, the Devils scored the first five goals, but the story of this game was Tim Cheveldae. After struggling to keep up with the Oilers attack for most of the series, he was simply sublime in this one, robbing Courtnall and Muller with several heart-stopping saves throughout the first two periods. Kamensky would finally break the shutout with less than a minute left, and Courtnall would score after getting out of the box when Robitaille scored on the power play a minute earlier, but it was the last gasp from the Oilers as their manic rally fell way short.
