LA Robbie
Awesome D Smozoma. The width of the post & a couple of Fuhr howlers making the difference at the moment. BUF will need to get some offence going or this could be a sweep! :-S
smozoma
Game 3: Buffalo switches things up, putting LaFontaine at C and Mogilny on LW. The change pays dividends early, as LaFontaine converts a onetimer from Mogs 3:36 into the game, on the Sabres 2nd powerplay of the game, 1-0 Sabres. The Sabres dominate the first and second periods, more than doubling the Leafs in zone time (4:26 to 2:04) and outshooting them 9-4, until with just under a minute to go in the 2nd, Gilmour and Smehlik race for a puck after it was batted out of the Leafs' zone by Borshevsky (who's lying face down on the ice after taking a hit from Smehlik right afterwards), and Smehlik narrowly wins the race and dumps a pass back to his D partner just as Gilmour throws him into the scorekeeper's box. Unfortunately, the pass goes awry, Fuhr has to make kick save, and Svoboda picks up the rebound and stuffs it in the net behind his own goalie. 1-1. 19 seconds later, Todd Gill goes end-to-end Bobby Orr style, ducks into the corner, and fires a pass into the crowd of 4 Sabres in front of the net. Moginly was backchecking hard, intercepted the pass... and rammed it into the net behind Fuhr. 2-1 Leafs, all goals coming off Sabre sticks. Time winds down in the 3rd with the Leafs leading 2-1 and trying to play it safe. After a dangerous scrum in front of Potvin, the puck bounces into the corner and Macoun picks it up and skates behind the net and rounds the corner, intent on starting a rush. LaFontaine is going to cut him off, though, so he makes a safe play, passing it across to his D partner. But. His D partner is not there, because LaFontaine has dragged him along with him, so the pass pings Potvin in the side of the head. And goes in. 2-2 with 39 seconds remaining in this embarrassment of a hockey game. We head to OT. The Sabres start out strong, and the Leaf defenders screw up on a Buffalo rush*, allowing Hawerchuk in alone. He pulls 'the move,' but somehow flubs it off Potvin's two-pad stack, sending it into the corner. The Leafs break out, Borshevsky crosses the offensive blueline, pulls up, and fires it in past Fuhr's glove. Leafs win 3-2 and lead the series 3 games to 0. 1-3:36 - BUF - LaFontaine (2), Mogilny (1) 2-4:12 - TOR - Borshevksy (2) 2-4:31 - TOR - Gill (1) 3-4:21 - BUF - Mogilny (2) OT~1:30 - TOR - Borshevsky (3) (didn't check the assists, if there were any) Game 4: 1 - 0:38 - Mogilny (3) 1 - 2:47 - Gilmour (4), Macoun (4) 2 - 0:21 - Gilmour (5), Anderson(1), Borshevksy (5) - Garbage goal, Gilmour swats a rebound in in a crowd 3 - 2:42 - Gilmour (6), Borshevsky (6) - Lines get mixed up after a PK ends, but turns out to be a good thing as Borshevsky wins a faceoff to Potvin's right, then Gilmour eludes the Sabres and takes a breakaway pass and beats Fuhr to give the Leafs some breathing room. ggs LA Robbie. This may have been a sweep, but all the games were closely fought, and a different bounce here or there and this could have been an entirely different series. *Buffalo Rush would be an awesome band name
kingraph
Great write up! Was like reading a news piece from Bobby McSticks, beat writer for NHL'94. Lol. Also sounds like all the games were close hard hitting battles. Congrats on a great season Robbie, and congrats to smoz on the victory.
