CamKneely Posted November 3, 2011 Report Share Posted November 3, 2011 After 5 years of devastating playoff losses to teams coached by angryjay, Vocally Caged's Sabres finally broke through to the second round of the Gens A playoffs with a heart-palpitating 7 game victory. Game 1 was a close battle as Pat Lafontaine barely outdueled Doug Gilmore, and Fuhr made a couple dazzling saves late as the Sabres escaped, 3-2. Toronto wouldn't go down without a fight as they stunned Buffalo 8-3 in game two. Everytime Gilmour and Anderson touched the puck, red lights soon followed. Buffalo defenseman Grant Ledyard took several stupid penalties throughout, killing any momentum his team had. Toronto stormed out to a lead early in their first game on home ice and took game three, 4-0. Buffalo finally switched superstar winger Alex Mogilny to center in place of Lafontaine, in hopes of sparking the offense. Mogilny led several dazzling rushes, but came up empty on each. Mogilny was knocked out for the first period early in game four, but it came back to haunt the Leafs, as Dale Hawerchuk and Bob Errey both scored a pair of goals to take it, 4-2. This led to the shocking benching of Pat Lafontaine for brief periods of games 4 and 5. Felix Potvin again stood on his head, turning away every Buffalo opportunity and putting the Sabres on the ropes. Ledyard was finally benched permanently in favor of Doug Bodger, who saw very limited regular season action. Ledyard had a good season but couldn't take the pressure of the playoffs, and Buffalo subsequently lost 4-0. Game six was won 3-2 by Buffalo, staving off elimination. To be honest I can't remember a thing about it. Buffalo triumphed at home in game seven, in front of an adoring, sold-out crowd. The teams traded chances until Lafontaine managed to score two goals close to 30 seconds apart late in the second. A power play goal by Doug Gilmour brought back horrible memories of choked-away playoffs past', but Buffalo somehow managed to keep the Leafs at bay until the final seconds, as unsung hero Bodger blocked a Gilmour attempt with 3 seconds left after Fuhr was caught completely flat-footed and had no chance at a save.
