Players (in game) that have won GDL trophies

Had some spare time on my hand and while researching my upcoming draft, I went through the players that have won the title. We had a similar one in NHL95 Manager league and while it will not tell that much where the players are controlled by humans, it's still a fun statistics and eventually some players might start to stand out, I was surprised with 3 titles with Duchesne for example. Moog also with 3 titles, while it's most likely only due to a draft position of stronger players and a random occurance _so far_. I did not list backup goalies and only separated the scratches on offence. The game has also evolved since most of these have been won, but at least it's for fun.

Okok, I went through the final appearances of coaches in GDL history as well.

Was going through a bit of the GDL13 odds in my mind, but don't have sufficient knowledge of everyone to do it. But I noticed this thing that GDL championship has only been won 2 times without having a speed 5+ players.

GDL 4 AngryJay

GDL 7 Carse

This is still a rather crude estimation, but it does look like speed is indeed that huge difference maker in the game proven by statistics also.

2/12 = 16.7% win percentage without one so far

Updated

Plabax joins double gold club in GDL and ties the statistics with kgman for top place, congratulations for that. There are now 4 players with 2 championships - kgman,Plabax, Freydey, swos. I had Freydey as the favourite for this season to grab his third, but he had to drop out so it was all Plabax who I had as a second favourite with his team. Is anyone gonna stop Plabax from grabbing his third to become the first ever on GDL to do so?

Also on players Moog seems to be a real standout in the goalies category. 4 championsips while the others have 1 at tops. Will this affect his draft position?

Also win percentage without a speed 5 player drops even lower. So far only these two coaches have done it without speed 5+ guys.

GDL 4 AngryJay

GDL 7 Carse

GDL has a 2/13 = 15.4% win percentage without a 5 speeder on team.

Do you really think Freydey would have been able to take me with a team that had more speed, agility, stickhandling, AND shooting power/accuracy than my GDL 12 team? I mean, I traded away Lemieux and Bradley and ended up replacing them with Gretzky and Cullen (I didn't even know his attributes until the league was over). Not only that, but my defensemen and my goalie were better in GDL 13 too.

Aside from replacing someone, I have only lost two playoff series, and they both come from me having poor GDL teams. I have never lost with a good team (6-0), and I have never won with a mediocre/bad one (0-2).

Speed suits Freydey well (I actually think he couldn't win with a max 4 speed offence like you can). Yes you had better team this season than last one, but maybe not enough. I know it's more about the tools your team has than what the opponent has to what it takes to play well, so maybe it would've been enough. With his speed I still would've put him as the favourite on 7 game thrill again (you have never actually won GDL when Freydey has played it). We will never know, I know you have the talk and the ability to walk it as well, but in the end it's all mumbo jumbo and speculation now.

Had we a normal connection I was unstoppable this season. ;)

Connections I feel are the biggest X-factor in online play. And it's nobody's fault but it can be so "disappointing" when your connection ruins it for someone on the other end or vice versa. Doesn't make any sense either, as it can be great for a few games, then go to complete s**t and only affect 1 of the coaches. With KG's connection, I don't know how he hasn't won every league every year, since it doesn't seem to affect him but can be torture for everyone else. I know it's a tired old complaint I'm sure everyone in the gaming world experiences. Nothing we can do about it unfortunately. Ummm, by the way, what's with this westward trend for the in person tourneys? East east east people!

He had just as much speed last year too. I've already beat him twice when he's had speed. If anything, his team was faster last year because of Selanne. I've won 5 of my last 6 leagues (beating Freydey twice), yet I am never considered to be the favourite. It just seems odd to me.

Updated as per GDL 16 (I actually did the edit already in nov 18, making a bet Plabber would get his third win). Seth got his first final appearance.

Moog continues his impressive statistics. No other goalie has more than 1 cup and Moog has 5 in his pockets out of 16 possible cups. In my mind he is one of the best, makes some impressive desperation saves as AI and is a great goalie for manual control, not the best AI goalie, but he's in top 5 for me.

Don't you think that it is not so much Moog is good, as it is the guys drafting him are REALLY skilled, and they put a priority on picking better forwards and d-men, and grab a goalie very late? So really Moog is merely a decent goalie (but a good pick in later rounds), rather than (in absolute terms) a great goalie?

I am phrasing this awkwardly, but you probably get what I mean? Moog is no Roy or Eddie, or even Essensa or Ranford. He is a good later round pick, drafted by coaches with skills that don't need a great goalie. Yeah?

Edit: I will say FIVE TIMES is amazing, but I think that is a coincidence. (And Plabax used him 2x, so there is a preference bias there,)

I have also played with Moog with Boston in Classic A in Fall 2015 with a record of 30-10 regular season. He did some impressive desperation saves for me that season. He is a very high value pick where he is getting picked atm, usually in the range of top level coaches when it's been a non-random draft order. He is no Roy, Eddie or Fuhr for sure, but the next tier is Essensa, Ranford, Moog & Soderstrom for me. Definately before Potvin, Joseph & Cheveldae. He has some impressive lateral movement saves at times as AI, like many of the lower weight goalies do Essensa & Soderstrom 3, Ranford & Moog 4 (even Terreri at 2 with 3/3 gloves & Casey 2 with 3/4). Stats wise looks like Moog is worst of that 2nd tier bunch, but he does very well in games, I have a theory on the awarenesses regarding that. This doesn't mean it's auto win for picking Moog, just that it's a great great value where he's been at and 5/16 championships where as everyone else has 1 is on the fringe of anomaly, but top 5 goalie for me from MY experience and stats look good.

I'll link here my draft sheet for goalies https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1UJD2L-ykXab3jU4pMN-fdihf3bE0Ak7sGudeRYyvcmw/edit?usp=sharing. It's not de facto order what I'd do, but around there. :) I like Hrudey in real life, but in the game we don't get along, so he's last. :D

In case some players did not know, the goalie weight works with goalie agility. The lower the weight, the faster the goalie moves on the crease and the heavier the slower it is. Swos did a frame by frame test with this if I recall it right and it's the same as with the fwd & d. Heavy guys start to move slow and are poor on rapid movement changes, but once they get going they're fine with top speed, but the area the goalies move in is very small so top speed really does not influence goalie ratings as they're all in 3/4 range. It's all about agility & weight (+ pck & gloves, sticks are not used that often, that's why Roy > Belfour).

Another thing is that right handed goalies that are only few in the game Fuhr, Barrasso & Puppa have different animations to 5 hole passes and shots usually. You really don't get them in for them so much, but the R goalies are on the heavier side so they're not that popular outside of Fuhr. For left handed goalies it's 4pck & 4/4 sticks that is on break even there, anything below and they suckage them in at ease and anything above and you hardly get them in.

This reminds me to update this stat, which shows goalie save % from GDL 08-13. I think that the more seasons of data we have, with different coaches using different goalies would provide some more empirical data on which goalies are the "best", but somehow I think the data is still skewed with many top coaches using weaker goalies. Nonetheless, notice Moog at #5! I will update with 14-16 this weekend, I'm away from my '94 comp atm.

Just thought this would be interesting...here are the lifetime goalie save %'s from GDL 06-13 (8 seasons) of the top 24 most used goalies:

01. Patrick Roy ----------.697
02. Ed Belfour -----------.690
03. Tommy Soderstrom -----.670
04. Tim Cheveldae --------.662
05. Andy Moog ------------.660
06. Chris Terreri --------.659
07. Jon Casey ------------.658
08. Bill Ranford ---------.654
09. Grant Fuhr -----------.651
10. Bob Essensa ----------.634
11. Ron Hextall ----------.634
12. Mike Vernon ----------.629
13. Dominik Hasek --------.628
14. Sean Burke -----------.628
15. Curtis Joseph --------.626
16. Tom Barrasso ---------.624
17. Felix Potvin ---------.622
18. Kelly Hrudey ---------.622
19. Don Beaupre ----------.619
20. Kirk McLean ----------.616
21. John Blue ------------.614
22. John Vanbiesbrk ------.605
23. Mike Richter ---------.605
24. Daren Puppa ----------.587

GDL has been won 3/16 times without having a 5+ speeder on the team = 18.75% success rate. The odds going on without playing with one are not very high for a cup run. 5+ Speed & should be the most sought commodity in drafts. But speed without high agility is not that effective, there are only 2 speed 6 players that have the cup, that is 2/16 = 12,5%, so seems speed 5 is enough already. The old drafting order might have something to do with that.

Winners without 5+ speeders on team:

GDL 4 AngryJay (Juneau, Borchevsky, Kovalenko, Donato, Yake, Kontos - Leetch, Svoboda, Wilkinson, Johnson - Joseph)

GDL 7 Carse (Gilmour, Bradley, Reichel, Miller, Todd, Lapointe - Duchesne, Driver, Cote, Foote - Richter)

GDL 14 Kingraph (LaFontaine, Kamensky, Jagr, Leeman, C.Lemieux, DeBrusk - Iafrate, Kasatonov, Weinrich, Krupp - Belfour)

HM to Plabax in GDL 11 & GDL 13 who did it without 5+ speed in forwards, only having Coffey on D. The odds without 5+ speeds on offence is thus 5/16 aka 31,25%, which is still relatively low.

GDL 11 Plabax (Gretzky, Lemieux, Carson, Adams, Yake, Volek - Coffey, L.Murphy, Malakhov, Krupp - Roussel)

GDL 13 Plabax (Lafontaine, Jagr, Lindros, Amonte, Leeman, Kennedy - Coffey, Dahlquist, Lidster, Sydor - Moog)

ps. Kgman joke was hilarious, I'd like a Moog jersey to a live tourney as well. #moog
