How do you network using GENS

Are you referring to netplay (online play)?

Click on file -> netplay in Gens or GensPlus. You'll see all of the servers come up listed in order of best ping. You would then need to meet up with someone in one of the server "rooms", either one of you host a game while the other one joins it. The easiest thing to do is chat with someone through AIM, Yahoo, etc and figure out the details there, then meet up in a server room. My screen name is goldparalax if you wanted to play a game with me.

You don't load the game first, that happens later in the server room.

Is this what you wanted to know?

AIM is the most popular chat program... AIM = AOL Instant Messenger.

I personally use Trillian, which allows you to connect to AIM, ICQ, MSN, and Yahoo accounts all at once.
