    Update: The Saturn pads are the best pre-analog stick pads ever created, and I don't judge cheap knock-offs of this legend kindly. I've had a few over the years as well (humble brag). They Saturn pad is really good and hard to distinguish from the original. The d-pad isn't quite the same feel, but the Saturn d-pads are like a good pair of leather shoes: they wear better after being broken in. So, I'd have to play more to give a final verdict. Nice thing is you can swap parts with an original Saturn pad. This Gen pad is far superior to the model-3 Gen pad and on par with other 6-button versions; Sega CD for example. EDIT: Just want to clarify if there is a bit of confusion, I was referring to the Model-3 SEGA console, not a controller of some sort. It's the 6-button pad that came with this: I had this system. It feels one of those balsa wood paper air planes we used to get at the hobby shop as a kid. Also, the cable is really short. Which was intended, because if it was any longer you'd try to hang yourself with it once you realize how bad the build quality actually is. Some are a fan of the batwing Genesis pad, and I do respect it for just being iconic built like a tank, but I don't like it. Thankfully the repros from retro-bit are more than serviceable. Good buy.

    STB is the NHL94 of baseball games. The best engine/game play and best graphics. I see people all over the web wanting an editor. Basically just NOSE for this game. Ive tried to open several different STB roms in NOSE but they will not open. If Sports Talk Baseball had a NOSE type editor you could no doubt launch an online community with edits and leagues just like this place. What is involved and exactly how much time and knowledge would be involved in creating such an editor? Just what old school NOSE does is fine. Change player names and attributes and a few minor quirks like the 10 run rule. I found some Genie/Classic Cheat Code patch stuff but thats just kid stuff like "get 10 outs" etc. I'm just shocked this doesnt exist considering how big baseball was/is.

    Following up on a post by Trojan, I think we can all work to add some extra flair to summer league. I'm thinking Sunday night, some time between 8-10 pm central, having a game of the week, where one or 2 games are streamed with commentary by guys like AJ/Ice/Trojan arranged as well. Pretty sure if I stream the game and say AJ/Trojan are in a party mode setup where their stream is linked, they can stream the game with commentary. I think leading up the game while it's getting setup, could discuss current league standings/stats &&& NHL94 stuff coming up, etc, like a 5-10 minute lead in at most. One or two games being streamed on a set time, means total time would be in the range of 30 minutes available on a weekly basis.     @halifax Please excuse my absence as I got in a fight with a giant talking grape over cosmic fruity pebbles. I also had to give my shield away... Long story (like 3 hours long) but I'm back. Hopefully I'll be able to make it in September as I'm relocating back to Philly this summer. Budgeting will be the tricky part for me; buying an house and moving n'all.

    So it looks like the last post I made on here was 2011 so I guess it's been a while I've been playing leagues on here since... 2003-ish? Looks like things have changed a lot! Love that we're now using Discord instead of AIM Once I get my NHL rig setup again for online play I'll be looking for some exhibition games, and then to try to re-learn how to play the game again. I haven't played NHL94 at all in years!

    I made a lot of progress this morning learning how to make the top goal even smaller visually to accommodate a wider range of values, as there is a limit on how small you can make the top goal by editing the goal art tiles. There appears to be no such limit on the bottom goal, but on the top goal, you are (apparently) not able to edit the area inside the top goal to make the goal any smaller than will work with the goal dimensions of 017012:0002. So if you wanted to use 017012:0000, or 017012:FFFF, for example, to make the top goal artwork match these smaller goal dimensions you would need to edit this area inside the top goal for which there was no apparent goal tiles for. I hqe moved my top goal side posts to the edge of the top goal side post tiles in tile layer pro and that matches the goal dimensions at 017012:0002, but you can go no further, that's the smallest you can make the top goal width visually through those tiles. To make the top goal even smaller, I found the tile that edits the area inside the top goal by using the topic: I was a little confused at first as to how to actually edit this area. On the grid the area I was trying to edit was in the vicinity of 59DF2 - 59DFC & 59E52 - 59E5C. (though it was really more like 59DF4 - 59DFA & 59E54 - 59E5A since the edges of this in-goal / crease area can be edited by the goal tile artwork) Well when I looked at these offsets in tile layer pro, the entire area I was looking to edit seemed be contained in a single tile. I had no idea how to edit this single tile since the tile looked nothing like the area I was trying to edit. (it just looked like a bunch of random single pixels so I was confused) I'm guessing this is what wboy meant when he said "NOTE THIS IS STILL NOT EASY!!! Have an open mind.. don't get frustrated... you'll get there... but it will take time. A lot of people give up trying this!" I still am not sure if there is some way to actually edit these tiles like you edit the other tiles, that I am just not understanding, however in any event I didn't give up and I decided to go into the bin and I started to hex edit some of these offsets to see what happened. Well I edited a bunch of those 00 8F 's at those offsets and when I did this, I observed that the artwork did in fact change in this area in the form of squares like the grid depicts, and I checked the edit to this single tile in tile layer pro, a couple pixels changed in this single tile each time. So I see how this works but I was of course trying to edit it more fully, and that topic seemed to suggest that there's a way to edit this area more fully, though it wasn't clear and I was never able to figure out how to do it. I wanted to edit this area to make new narrower goal posts, so I came up with an idea. I was going to scroll through the pre-determined artwork in these tiles until I found something that resembled side posts. (since it seemed like the only way to accomplish my goal of making the top goal even smaller so I can use a wider range of values and have the goal / posts artwork match up) So I was able to scroll through these hex addresses and tried to find pre-determined artwork in these squares that resembled goal posts, in this area inside the top goal, and beyond the limit of the normal side post tiles, so I could then erase the normal goal posts so I can have an even narrower top goal so I can use lower values of my vertical barrier code. Well after a long process I found some pre-determined artwork that looks like goal posts in this area. Although I can't seem to change the color of these new goal posts, it does accomplish what I set out to do, to get even narrower goal posts in the top goal so I can have a smaller goal so I can make the boards a little bit wider and have even narrower goal dimensions that matchup to the goal / post artwork. This has been quite an adventure for me but a very satisfying one, and now that I have these narrower top goal posts I can now start the processes of editing my already smaller goals to be even smaller by erasing the normal top goal side post tiles completely and using these new narrower goal posts. What I want to do now is to show you guys some screenshots of my smaller goal artwork so you can get a sense of what I'm talking about and how this relates to the codes in this topic. The first 2 screenshots are the goal that I have been using for the last week or two. It's the smallest you can make the top goal without resorting to this other "rink layout" tile. This goal artwork lines up wonderfully with the codes 17012:0002 & 17014:0000. Pucks hit off these narrower posts right at this location of this artwork and it's absolutely phenomenal to experience it in a match. So that's my goal artwork for 17012:0002 & 17014:0000. Now these 3 screenshots below are a result of what I did today, by editing the other rink layout tile, so I can have even smaller goals. This is the predetermined artwork I found that resembled goal posts, so I can get around the limit of the top goal, so I can lower 17012 below 0002 and try to match it up. Note that there is a bit of a bug in instant replay when you reverse angle with this method that I am looking into. (these new narrower posts disappear when you reverse angle, but still it's pretty cool nonetheless) This is another piece of predetermined artwork that I found that sort of looks like I can merge with the back of the net artwork to make a smaller goal that's a little curved. Anyway I thought you guys would find this really cool ! Now I just gotta edit the rest of the goal (and the bottom goal) so I can test lower values !

    To look for new posts. It's an addiction. I don't really know how to Facebook and don't like social media - I've been told this is a good thing by many a fellers - and I think Zuckerberg is an android and sleeps in a vegetable crisper to recharge. Difference between all of those other places is I like all the people here. I don't really know why I made this thread, but I want to allay any fears about me starting a podcast or something about my thoughts.

    I swapped them in pixelpuck.com NHL11 to NHL14 ROMs along with the separate button for goalie control. Also made the goal horn louder / deeper (don't remember how I did that exactly).

    We are back for the 4th annual NHL'94 Tournament to be held at the Long Island Retro Gaming Expo on Saturday August 10th! Previous Champs 2016 - @angryjay93 beats @Evan in the finals! (also beat @MikeGartner22 in the semis!) 2017 - @corbettkb beats @smozoma (who took out @Lupz27 in semis) 2018 - @corbettkb goes back to back, taking out @MikeGartner22 (and @skoolyardpuck in semis) to win his 2nd in a row. Will Tex be able to complete the 3 peat? I am hoping a lot of the NYC tournament guys make it out the the LI Expo, it won't be an easy task! You can see the previous Challonge brackets and videos in the LI threads for reference, this tournament is always a good time. And it's FREE as part of your paid admission to the LI Retro Expo. The Expo is a great place to explore and play in other tournaments too, I highly recommend attending. I will post more in the very near future as we about 2 months away!

    Also. It's a good practice to make several saves of a rom when building it out, just like coding. If you plan to make several changes and then add some of the previously created hacks - get saves at every step.

    First off I'd like to thank you for taking the time out to read the various posts and to go even further by asking a question. Before I found the site I actually spent most of my time playing the computer with line changes and offsides on. I know auto line changes are a bit different than manual since the CPU likes to match the checking line against Sc1, especially when a team is leading so its pretty important to make sure you have some quality guys on that Chk line. I think Raph gives you a pretty solid break down on how to value your roster spots. I think the extra things I would throw in are skating and endurance would take a higher premium for me than usual. With line changes on, you cant really slam on the C button to get those turbo boosts, otherwise your team is gonna be gassed in short order, especially those low endurance guys. If you combine poor skating with poor endurance then you can be in serious trouble. Luckily Detroit avoids this problem for the most part, Pittsburgh will be a bit more tricky. My Detroit lines: SC 1: Fedorov-Yzerman-Probert SC 2: Ysebaert-Ciccarelli-Ogrodnick Chk: Drake-Kennedy-Kozlov Coffey-Konstantinov Lidstrom-Chiasson Howe-Racine I would try to avoid Ray Sheppard as he is slow and his endurance is below average. Also, I'd try to beef up my Chk line with my best defensive players which the 3 I've included are the best defensive forwards for Detroit and they have just enough skill to take advantage of a team that is pressing for a goal. Not too many differences from Raph, so I don't think you can go wrong with either set. As for Pitt... SC 1: Stevens-Lemieux-Mullen SC 2: Jagr-Francis-McEachern Chk: Tippett-Tocchet-Straka U. Samuelsson-Stanton Paek-Murphy Ramsey-K. Samuelsson Pittsburgh really tests my theories as they have several slow, heavy, and low endurance players. Line 1: Lemieux and Stevens both have very high endurance and should be a good combo together because they can keep up with each other. Mullen gives nice weight variety as he is easily the lightest player on this line, he has a scoring touch to boot. I think the D pair here is the most balanced Pittsburgh can offer and it doesn't make the line too heavy by inserting Murphy over Stanton. Plus, Stanton is just a poor mans Murphy so I dont think you lose much. Line 2: Jagr and Francis should do well with each other as Francis is essentially the best offensive weapon left on the roster for Jagr to feed. McEachern is a role player with good endurance who can keep up with the pace of play and pot his easy chances. Murphy is an obvious choice as he is the best defender remaining, he should be able to further boost this line offensively where needed. Where Pittsburgh really struggles is with its 4th D man, they do not have a good option but Paek is probably the best of the bunch as he has decent endurance and is the fastest remaining player to choose from. Chk: It's really hard to put together a traditional checking line here as the Pens simply do not have the personnel available. Tippett is a well below average player but hes the only player with decent skating as well as some endurance. Tocchet is a skilled player but is incredibly slow and heavy. He doesn't really fit in well with anyone so he kind of needs some lightweight guys to carry him around. Straka is the best checker in Pittsburgh but his endurance is extremely low so you really have to pick your spots with him to be effective. The defense is just the best of the rest as Ramsey has acceptable agility and endurance ratings. K. Smauelsson should be fine in his own zone but he's liability in transition or with the puck on his stick. You'll want Kjell out there though as the rest of the D corps is really, really bad. Pittsburgh is kind of brutal in general and even more so with line changes on. If you can, just steer clear of them. I'll rank my top 5 line change teams below off the top of my head. 1. Montreal (3 good lines, 2.5 solid D pair and a top end G) 2. Boston (Depth galore at all positions) 3. Detroit (Top end F talent, 6 plus defenders, and a great Chk line) 4. Calgary (2 great lines and 6 plus defenders, shaky G) 5. Chicago (1 great line and top G, shaky depth) Honorable Mentions: Vancouver (Speed & depth), Los Angeles (2 insane offensive lines and solid D, abysmal G), Quebec (3 solid lines), Buffalo (1 insane F line, a top G, and then very average depth) I'd try to stay away from these non expansion teams. - Islanders (one good F line, tons of unspectacular D, slow depth F and the worst G) - Pittsburgh (As discussed above) - St. Louis (slow, heavy, terrible depth) -Edmonton (slow, heavy, low endurance, bad passing) That pretty much leaves Dallas, Hartford, NJ, NYR, Philly, Toronto, Washington & Winnipeg as your middle tier teams with various strengths and weaknesses. Generally these teams lack depth or top end skill/speed. If I had to rank the expansion teams I'd go...TB, SJ, OTW, FLA, & Anh at the bottom.

    There are officially licensed repros of the Saturn and Genesis pads by Retrobit on Amazon. These two came in the mail today: I bought them to train for the King of 94-4. They feel sturdy so far.

    The purpose of 0-15 is just to allow finer-grained ratings. The game remains essentially the same except that if you're creating players you can tune them more precisely. Unfortunately since I didn't make it 0-12 you can't directly map original nhl94 players to the finer scale by just multiplying by 2.

    How to convert between the 200+ ratings and normal ratings: divide or multiply by 2.5. 230/2.5 = 92 It might not be exact due to rounding or slight formula differences in the hack.

    You can change it back to "Normal" using the SmozRom, however the ratings will be really whacked as the person who made the rom with "abnormal" ratings changed it from a 0-6 rating to a 0-15. So changing the rom back you will still have players rated above 6 in many categories causing what I would think is a nightmarish situation. What roms are you working with? What is your goal? Also, NOSE shows you the correlating normal values of the ratings when using the abnormal ratings.

    What game? Nhl94? What roms specifically? You can copy players between roms by having two NOSE windows open. Cyrl+c, ctrl+v (it will overwrite) I wonder if ROM B uses the special 0-15 ratings hack.

    For LA Kings, my D starters are reversed. (I prefer Coffey on RD.) Not a huge deal, but thought I would mention it.

    Game Genie codes are basically Hex edits, too. The first part is the address in the ROM file, and the 2nd part is the new value to place there.

    Changing names and attributes could be done using a hex editor, no programming required. Just investigation and trial and error. https://mh-nexus.de/en/downloads.php?product=HxD20 To make an actual point-and-click editor like NOSE would take learning how to program, which is a fun but time-consuming.

    @angryjay93, and a number of other Tecmo players have been doing a weekly broadcast covering the most competitive games of the 2019 GBLAN(my organization) Online Tecmo Super Bowl tournament that we do annually now. The games are played in advance, and we utilize the emulator's recording/playback feature that creates a very small file. That file uses the emulator to play back the action. It's about 95% effective. We take that, plug it into the emulator, and call the action while recording using OBS. I use the screen sharing feature of Discord to bring in the audio for my color commentators. I'm not sure if there is a similar feature built into the likes of RA, but we could work with a raw video file, should someone send me the link for it. Doing this live would be a s**t show. Doing the recording, then premiering it on a notable channel with eyeballs would be ideal. This year we partnered with The Retro Sports Gamer Channel on Youtube. The response has been very good so far. Here is an example of that. It's Tecmo, not NHL94, but the same concept could be brought to the NHL94 community, should we settle on how we capture the games being played. I don't see this working as a live endeavor.

    Not in Genesis unfortunately (from the Menu). But in RA, you can pull up the Quick Menu (F1 key or "Menu Toggle" from one of the drop downs on the Menu Bar) and Restart from there. You would basically be hitting reset on the console.

    OK, I have mentioned 2 team draft, but we are up to 18 teams (16 confirmed), so we will only be drafting ONE team each. HOWEVER, we will be doing a FULL roster draft, all 12 forwards, 6 defenders and 2 goalies. This will enable Line Changes ON for Exi's, and a possible MID-SEASON Tourney I am thinking of doing using Line Changes in the rules. ALSO, this will setup A level coaches to use their "B" squad vs B coaches A teams, and even out the playing field during the regular season.
