    Hey guys, Here is the updated ROM with the 2017-18 rosters. I'll add more details later, but if you're new to updated ROMs: -This is a 32-team ROM (updated teams, player cards and graphics by Slapshot67) -Updated rosters for 2017-18 season (rosters by Skip). Lines were accurate as of 10/8 (except for Vegas). Went ahead with Vegas "best lines" -Weight bug is fixed (heavy guys are harder to knock down) -1 minute penalties (except for injuries = 2 min penalty) KNOWN BUG: The menu screen will freeze if the player cards begin to cycle for team #31 - Winnipeg. This really was a fun ROM to put together. We hope you enjoy! NOTE: The tourney ROM has continuous OT.     UPDATE: I'm dropping an updated version of my ROM rosters as of 12/15 (ish). I've been picking at the rom continuously, and this mostly a ratings update for how certain guys are performing this year, with updated starting lineups/ photos as well (some teams like Vegas, STL really needed updates!). So I've hardly any time to test, but the time is now for release. Details: -All 31 NHL teams with up-to-date logos/uniforms/lines/ratings (thank you slapshot!) -player portraits for all no-line-change starters -custom/anniversary center ice logos for teams that use them this year (CAR, DAL, TB, DET, NYR...) -Weight bug fix -speed burst at 75% of original rom -accurate arena music per team (default in slapshot 32-team rom) -ice/bench graphic hacks (default in slapshot 32-team rom) -known bug with 32-team rom -- GAME WILL CRASH IF CYCLING THROUGH WPG (TEAM 31) PORTRAITS ON MAIN MENU Please let me know if you find any bugs or errors.     Hey guys, here is the 2017 Trade Deadline ROM! I hope you like it. Slapshot67 - Thanks for everything! **EDIT - I added a playoff version of the ROM. Has a few changes to rosters (tried to get all players playing in the playoffs right now), but it also has the real tourney tree instead of the projected tree, as an option. I made penalties 1 minute long (except for double-minors). Enjoy! Updates for 2017 ROMs - All are WBF (Blitz style) ROMs -Player Cards for every starter on every team -Added Anniversary logos for Toronto, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Los Angeles -Bench Graphics (backup goalie, coach) & Bench Carpet -Goal Light -Net Fix -Ratings changes for teams & players (excel file w/ ratings in zip folder) -Added a few playoff matchups based on this year's current standings -The Excel file will give you all of the player ratings, with an extra rating that shows how likely a check will be successful with a player. It uses weight + checking rating to give a "checking ability". Somebody figured out that a check is likely to be successful if they check a player with a weight a full digit lower than the checking ability. For example: PK Subban has a 8.9 checking ability (slightly abv average for a Dman), Shea Weber has a 14.1 (really high), and Erik Karlsson has a 5.4 (pretty low). If Subban attempts to check an 8 weight, he may have some issues, but he will usually knock down a 7 weight. Weber can knock down anyone 13 weight or lower, so he is the beast.     I was waiting to announce this, but me and my team of artists I have completely re-done the game in unreal engine with polygonal graphics. With a little extra work, we will also have photorealistic coaches on the bench, 4 officials on the ice, and accurate team goal horns. Also adding AHL, KHL, SHL, and national teams. 50/50 if we can have every NCAA team as well. ROM will be free and 512kb download.

    This thread will be my notes and attempt to expand NHL'95 to a 34 team ROM. Before I start, I'd like to thank @wboy, @slapshot67, and @smozoma up front, as just about all of my hacking knowledge has come from them. I will try to give credit where appropriate, but 95% of this will be one of those guys. So my initial thoughts are as follows: Expand the '95 ROM from 2MB to 4MB to create room for more teams, graphics: Not needed, enough empty space to use in 2MB. Also going over 2MB creates RAM issues. Find the team data and move it to a new spot in the expanded ROM. Create data for 34 teams: DONE! Change the team pointers to the new data: DONE! "Decompress" graphics (logos, banners, player cards, etc.) - DONE! Change pointers to the new graphics - DONE! Make '95 recognize the new teams/graphics, able to select in menu - DONE! Figure out how the season data works, incorporate into 34 teams - WIP Same with trade player and other unknown '95 stuff ADD: Music, figure out how to make sure the music works for new teams - DONE! So here goes. I expect this to be a pretty long project, with many bumps along the way, but ultimately fun.

    Hey everyone, I've been working behind the scenes the last month or so to get an NHL '94 Youtube channel and live stream going. On this channel I hope to provide content on the following items: -Live Game Analysis -Team Breakdowns -How to Videos -Challenges vs. Computer -Various other items that may arise While my Youtube channel may not quite be ready to start producing regular content, I have been working on some test footage which I have just posted this morning. This test footage consists chiefly of some games with MikeGartner that I played at CoachMac's house last night. What make this footage different from regular game recordings is that this footage also has Coach and I on camera analyzing the game as it plays out. While we have had commentators at our live events, I don't think we've ever had the game broken down by the person playing it as it goes on. I'm hoping this unique angle of live analysis gives other people better insight of the action. I just uploaded a couple videos; one contains myself and Mike Gartner playing 5 summer league games with the 2nd containing an exhibition game between Coach Mac & Mike Gartner, you can use the links below to view it on Youtube. A lot of this is a work in progress and will improve over time but I think it's a good first step. One thing I would really appreciate in all of this is the input and support of the community. In the end I want this content to be an extension of us and our community so it is vital that you guys get involved. How you can get involved can take various forms. The first thing that can be done is so subscribe to the channel and if you want to go a little further by commenting on my videos or giving a thumbs up (or thumbs down) then that would be really helpful. Also, please feel free to send me a PM, e-mail, or post on the forums requesting a video on a specific subject. I'm open to helping anyone with anything because I want to help the level of play here continue to rise. I also want to help anyone who is either getting back into the game after a long break or who is a total noob. Oh and before I forget, don't fret my SNES buds, I plan on having SNES specific content as well. You will not be forgotten in all of this. So again, things are a work in progress here and it will get better moving forward.     First and foremost, THANK YOU to @Evan, @chaos and @MikeGartner22 for putting together a successful tournament! In case you didn't know, these buds are awesome and everyone contributed to the success of this tournament in different ways! Special thanks to @corbettkb, who took the time to show @CoachMac around NYC, help out in any way he could, and just being completely selfless all the time. He even picked up the food tab Friday! An amazing asset to the '94 community and amazing competitor as well! Glad we were able to hang out for a couple days! Speaking of Coach, I am a fan and was very happy that he could make it to the tournament. I hope you had a great time, and that your trip was worthwhile. I promise to do the trip out to Nevada one day to hang out in your neck of the woods (mountains?) when I can score some cheap flights! As I reflect upon the weekend, it always comes down to the same thing -- enjoying spending time with the 94 community, both known and all the new buds I got to meet! So happy that @IAmFleury'sHipCheck was able to make it from Chicago and @kylewat took the Amtrack from Baltimore! I haven't seen Zep since Toronto; it was great to hang out and for him to show how strong of a '94 player he truly is! IMO, he is usually underrated because of his play style. EA, as usual, is great to talk to all day and I thought he played better than I have seen in some time! So appreciative that you come down and I cherish the signed '94 box that has become your calling card. Many many thanks! Hope you had a great time bud! @Sdogg made the trip into the city and he brought the great energy, and was close to convincing his lovely wife to play! @crazygoalie33 hasn't missed any tournaments and seems to get some rough draws, this one included, playing wookie, Tex and eggink in the RR, only to meet eggink in the opening bracket losing a close 3 game set! @Bad Moon Rison , always appreciate the kind words and insights. You have run many Tecmo tournaments, from which we have taken ideas from, and love to see you continue to enter and play '94 tournies! (sorry to have knocked you out of the tourney bud). @banditra101801 (George) - happy you were able to make the tournament and even play in place of a no-show! Hope you had a great time! Finally, all the buds like @superfan99, Chris O. Matt, Ron D, and anyone who made the tournament that I may have missed, I hope you all had a great time! I encourage any/all feedback. At the end of the day we (whether us who ran NYC, or others like @halifax and @Edge of 94' WI) just want to make sure we're doing the best we can to make it enjoyable for all. Other thoughts LOVED * Random starting order vs pre-ranking * Modified swiss style round robin format, followed by elimination game. The swiss style led to some amazing round 3,4,5 games! * Buds who jumped on for streaming commentary. I will be making a highlight reel from the day to share in the near future! * Overall community, everyone is so cool, which makes running a tournament much smoother than I think. I'm constantly worried about things and I shouldn't underestimate you guys (all of you). CONSIDERATIONS * Handling of no-shows. Expected 1-2, did not expect 4. Also expected more guests. * Streaming set up. In short, I think a longer RCA cable will allow me to have the streaming/commentators a little further from the players. I also want the output to be broadcast for a larger crowd to see. * Add team and home/away to data capture for future analytics. While I fear over-complicating score entry, this has run very smooth for us in the past few tournies. Small tweaks to the scoresheets. Finally, on my own personal play, I am happy to have come out on top this tournament. My final opponents were Lupz, Tex and Zep, who, I feel, each could have won this tournament themselves. I got Lupz in game 01 early, and I knew he was not playing up to speed. It's almost like a sucker punch to the gut to start a fight, I was lucky to get one so quick. Game 02 went down to the wire, and 8-7 OT victory for me. Given our history, that was more of what we should have expected. Lupz played well and had about 2 instances when his player didn't shoot the puck! Easily could have been a game 03. Tex had just beat EA in two close ones, and I knew EA was playing well. Tex also beat me in the RR with an amazing comeback during our 4-0 vs 4-0 match. I picked VAN-DET and Tex was nice enough to give me Vancouver, a team he knew l liked (Detroit isn't bad either, lol). Second game was another speed session with DAL and WPG. Looking back, I was locked in, holding Tex to 1 goal for both games, not an easy task with those teams and his caliber of play. Finally, Zep was busting people all day, I had called his earlier matches against MikeGartner22. Game 01 was a disaster for me, Zep kept putting on the pressure and I couldn't get my Rangers to shape up. Game 02 was the opposite, where I was able to go up quick with Philly over Zep's Blues. So both of us had lopsided games to start, leaving a game 03. It was my turn to pick teams, and I went with Chicago / Buffalo, a high powered matchup that I like either way. In hindsight, that may have been a mistake since both teams have amazing home ice and Zep was home. Zep chose Buffalo and I had Chicago. If I lost this tournament with JR & Belfour, I had no excuses! Well, the game unfolded with JR on a mission! He single handily took over the game, scoring all my goals. I felt in control of the entire game and having Eddie in net was the ultimate security blanket. Proud of the victory, and though I felt like a boob for winning a tournament that I helped organize, everyone I played told me otherwise, so I feel better, Until next time (LI Retro Expo Aug 10-11th!)

    I am crying happy tears as @Lupz27 and @IceStorm70 are fully registered to play! This means in addition to some very high level '94 play, there will be lots of 2v2 after the tournament! Also, recent Classic participants @aepurniet and @kuefner have also registered! Looking forward to meeting you fine gentlemen (unless we've met before, in which I am dumb). As of this post we have reached our cap of 32, though we are holding a few spots for some special guests. People can still register for the waitlist or to just keep up on the tournament details via e-mail. Anyone can attend to be part of the crowd. Very excited about this event and we (all the organizers) are working hard to make sure it's gonna be great. Stay tuned!

    A while back I was curious as to looking at how players were rated in the original NHL 94, so as to keep my hacks more or less playing like the original ROM. I made these charts but never had a moment and organization to upload them, but here they are now. The zip files contains images for the distribution of each player attribute, skater and goalie. The groups are further separated by offense/defense, and starter/backup for goalies. I won't clutter up the post with all 22 images, but it's crazy seeing how low the overalls are. Nearly every backup goalie is rated between 40-50 overall! About 45% of defensemen are ~48 OVR, and about 30% of forwards are the same. Only about 15% of forwards break 80 OVR. There's lot of little tidbits you can find as well: -Fs and Ds aren't rated all that differently in most categories, but D are better hitters, with WAY worse shooting accuracy -About 80% of D have either a 2 or 3 on speed (FYI, original rating scale was 1 - 6, with 6 being 99 in game, and 3 being 40-60 in game) I can't say I match these distributions in my ROMs, but I think it's interesting to look at.     Thanks to @Puck Junk, here's a page from Igor Kuperman's original ratings for the Blackhawks. Interesting that Shot Accuracy isn't specifically listed there, but we know that was a direct link to shooting percentage. I also notice that offensive awareness isn't there (was that also based on a stat?) and fighting is there, futher proving this was originally in the game and taken out at the end. Here's his Tweet:

    Hey guys, here is the UPDATED PLAYOFF ROM for 2018-19 season. Special thanks to @slapshot67 for his work on graphics and player cards! Below you'll find the ROM and Excel sheet. Excel is in the zip folder, which shows player ratings, "Skip's ratings", etc. Changes from earlier 2019 ROMs: Player rating updates based on this year's performance, roster changes, some new player cards, playoff brackets to reflect actual 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs. I updated every teams lines, including PK lines based on top TOI on PK for each team, last time but didn't do much this time around. Injured players remain in lineup on their assumed line. Notes: -This is the 32-team ROM (updated teams, logos, player cards and graphics by Slapshot67). -Updated team rosters for 2018-19 season (rosters and player ratings by Skip). The 32nd team is still the NHL'94 Hall of Fame team, with original NHL94 ratings! -Weight bug is fixed (heavy guys are harder to knock down), and this ROM uses weight + checking = hitting ability -1 minute penalties (except for injuries = 2 min penalty). You can do 5, 7, 10 or 20 minute periods. -Hot/Cold is accurate in the pre-game screen and in edit lines NEW for 2019 ROM: Added in NHL Network's Kevin Weekes as the announcer. ROSTER NOTES: Some long-term injured players were also omitted (ie Stephen Johns, Christian Dvorak). 3rd line is usually a mashup of best players on a team's real 3rd & 4th lines. Tried to keep scoring lines as they are in real life, or how they "should be" when players return from injury. KNOWN BUG: The menu screen will freeze if the player cards begin to cycle for team #31 - Winnipeg. There is no known fix for this. TOURNEY ROM has continuous OT. The regular ROM has 5 minute OT.     Hi Everyone! The new hockey season is officially here!!! With it, comes a bunch of new ROMs. As I did a "pre-season" version, I am now excited to present my official 2019 season ROM!!! Here’s what you need to know: *Link for the ROM is below the in-game images. *The "Winnipeg Freeze Bug" exists on this rom as it affects all 32 team roms. *I created a new structure for all teams. Each team has 3 goalies, 14 forwards and 8 defensemen for you to choose from prior to a game. *This ROM is a “healthy/best case scenario” ROM. That means, most injured players are in the line-ups. I prefer it that way as it is more fun to play. *Many of the line combinations and D pairings were used or are being used (currently) during this season. *31 NHL Teams. *32nd team is a 2019 Prospects team (featuring Jack Hughes & Kaapo Kakko). *Kenny Albert is the new “Ron Barr” in my rom.     Maybe he's got a point? I mean, we do see quite a lot of tournaments across the country to celebrate and compete in NHL 96. I, personally, love NHL.com's coverage of the anniversary of NHL98. And, my god, who doesn't have found memories, as a child, of dominating NHL97 with Jeremy Roenick? I mean, it's always great to hear current NHL players reliving their foundest momeries of playing NHL 2001. To be honest, it's really a wonder that this site exists given how much the game sucks! SMH If you don't like a game, that's cool. There are other options. I just don't get the point of sh*tting on someting that so many folks love and have warm memories for just because you see a deficiency. Maybe I'm the minority in my opinion and response. But, NHL94 IS one of the greatest sports games ever released! Is it the greatest of all time, not likely given its age and the technology of the day. Would it have been cool to have season mode and fighting, sure. But, it doesn't hurt the game. Did it make it's mark on history more than the majority of sports games EVER released, you bet! There is no denying it and to crap all over it is silly. End rant. Cheers!

    Hey guys, This is a special release that Slapshot67, KTup710 and I have worked on all spring/summer. Really, it began this winter while watching the Olympics. I missed the NHLers and I decided to make a ROM about it. This is the 32-team ROM, but since most teams are not that competitive with the big boys, I decided to mix it up a bit. This ROM is called IIHF Legacy '19. It contains 15 current National Teams made up of what would closely resemble the real rosters in a major world tourney, and 17 historic National Teams from different tourneys. The main ROM is a WBF-rom. I added a 2nd ROM that does not include the weight bug fix. KNOWN BUG: The game will freeze if you scroll through the USA'96 player cards in the menu screen. This is a known bug that affects the 31st team on any 32 team ROM, and is not currently fixable. This was a lot of fun to make. I've worked with the great @slapshot67 on other ROMs, and adding the work of KTup710 only enhanced this particular ROM. KTup did all the work on the implementation of logos, and he did some incredible work on the banners. @KTup710 - really great work bud, truly commendable in the annals of NHL94 lore. As usual, Slapshot did spectacular work on players cards, splash screen, game clock...even the IIHF trophy is there! I handled the uniforms, players, player ratings, lines, and selected the logos we'd end up using. Some Notes Where it gets fun is the Legacy part. We created 17 "Classic" Historic teams, with an added twist. You'll be able to play the Miracle on Ice (1980 USA vs Soviet Union), the 1987 and 1991 Canada Cup Finals (1987 + 1991 Team Canada, 1987 Soviets, 1991 Team USA), the 1996 World Cup of Hockey Final (USA vs Canada) and the 2002 Olympic Gold Medal Game (Canada vs USA). Also included is the 1998 Czech Republic team, first NHLers to win Olympic Gold. Including them threw off the balance of 16/16 classic vs current teams, but that's ok. The twist is where it gets even more fun for NHL'94 fans. We created 6 National Teams made of the original ROM's players, with original ratings. Some players had to be added to complete rosters, but the original NHL'94 spirit of the 6 teams is surely there. They're the Original 6 of this ROM :-) Players & Rosters I tried to make team rosters as accurate as possible, with jersey #'s and lines as accurate as I could find. I also tried to keep ratings "within the defined parameters of NHL'94". I tried to keep players mostly honest. If you know anything about my current ROMs, you'll get the adjustment. Keep in mind players may have different ratings in different seasons (ie. '87 Gretzky is the man, Mario went virtually untouched from orig 94). Check out the excel sheet for more on player + team ratings. I needed to add some players to complete the 1994 teams, which is why there are players who were not in the game on those teams. Also, I know Petr Nedved actually played for Canada in 1994. But, come on, he belongs on Czech, Czech needs players, and Canada is ok without NHL94 Petr Nedved. You'll notice on some of the Legacy teams that a players weight may have changed from their original '94 weight. I tried to make a player's weight accurate to what it was in real life, except for the six NHL94 World Star teams. I left those players as is, Tony Amonte included. Amonte is a lefty in '96 and '02. And this is the last hurrah for Jaromir Jagr and the Sedins, so they were included on the current National Teams for 2019.     Hey Players! Its been a while but I finally have some news about Pixelated Heroes release. A few weeks ago I was approached by a start-up streaming service (in Silicon Valley) about doing an online Aviation News show (much like Philip DeFranco on Youtube). As we were in talks I mentioned Pixelated Heroes and I sent them the screener we have seen in Vegas and they loved it. My original goal was to get PH on a major streaming service and to be honest I have been so busy at work that it fell by the wayside. I burnt myself out getting the film ready for Vegas and needed a break, that's why I have been away from the community. But know I'm reset and ready to start a new game lol. The new company submitted me their offer to stream Pixelated Heroes yesterday, It is not a lot of money and by no means covers the production cost. But what they are offering that no one else would do, is to take my 4 Terabytes of extra footage and make it into enough small videos to make years worth of content to stream regularly. I believe this is the best for everyone, as a lot of you spent your time helping me out and I would hate for the footage to be lost on a hard drive on my shelf (there is a lot of cool stuff and stories). Including full interviews with the producers and programmers. So basically, they will stream the finished full-length Pixelated Heroes on their new site. Then produce smaller videos from my footage and release them on a regular basis. All of this will be on a custom page so its all in one area. And who knows maybe we will do a sequel! I will for sure let you guys know more about the company and our plan once the deal is signed. But for now, keep your sticks on the ice. Cheers, Mikey

    9 House Teams… The White Walkers… The Westeros Hockey League… A Battle for the Cup Iron Throne has begun! WINTER IS HERE!!! I am attaching my Game of Thrones themed ROM. PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS THREAD TO DISCUSS THE SHOW OR PROVIDE ANY SPOILERS! While many of us have watched all 7 seasons, so far, some may still be binge watching. Please don’t ruin it for them. We all know there are a few surprise twists by the end of season 7. One of them, is in this ROM. That said, if you haven’t completed season 7, and you are still watching, I do not recommend downloading this until you are done. One spoiler is within the game. Some ROM details: It contains the 9 major Houses plus the White Walkers as playable teams. As a bonus, I also threw in an 11th team that contains NHL Hall of Famers (the best of the best). Teams 12-32 are not playable. They are simply team #11 repeated/copied as placeholder. The playoff structure is set-up so the winner of the Houses squares off against the White Walkers for the Iron Throne. Because there are 9 houses, but only 8 can appear on the right/left brackets (see screenshot below), I programmed it to rotate every house out of at least one playoff scenario. So, in turn, no one is truly left out. All players, who are not White Walkers, are named by [Last Name], [First Name]. So, for example: Lannister, Jaime Lannister, Cersei Lannister, Tyrion Etc. This was done because, when you score a goal, the pop-up window only shows the number and last name of the scorer (and whoever got the assist(s)). That’s confusing if a team has all of its players with the same last name. So now, when a goal is scored, the first name appears (with their number). However, in all other game sections, you should see first and last name listed but in the order structure mentioned above. Not exactly a big deal (IMO). Not every character from the GoT universe is in the game. I only included those who are part of these major houses (both alive or dead). I apologize to all you Hodor or Brienne of Tarth fans. Lol Some characters included may not have been in the TV series but, they are in the books. As there are several women in the rosters, they are all defaulted to 144 pounds in weight (as we can’t go any lower). The team colors are based on their respective house flags/banners. Those flags/banners serve as the Team Selection &Center Ice logos. As the White Walkers don't have a banner, I found something that serves as one (a skull with a crown).     I think for every hockey fan and player alike, the Mighty Ducks have a special place in your heart. The movie is pretty outlandish from a hockey perspective (players switching uniforms, no offsides called on the Flying V, it goes on and on), but it's a staple of hockey in pop culture. When I found all the great tools for hacking the game on this forum, I wanted to take a stab at it, and I felt this was a great place to start.     Hey Mikey, great to hear from you again and see that you’re recharged. It’s important to set the time aside for that. I’ve taken a lot of time myself to recharge myself for the online community and I think I’m ready to start posting a bit again. anyways, back to the documentary. I think what this company wants to do with the content sounds great. You get to have the stand alone movie that you worked so hard on and other videos dedicated to other stuff that I think the hardcore crowd will really be into. I know I’m interested greatly in the interviews and would just love to have that raw footage available at the click of a button. i wish the money was a bit better for you, I know you spent a lot of your own money traveling, creating the movie, holding the two tournaments ,etc. I just want to say thank you for doing that. I know for me personally it has opened a lot of doors to travel and meet people from all over. All of the live events have been my favorite part of the nhl 94 experience. Who knows where we would be as a community without the live tournaments and your documentary. Thank you again a bud and please keep us posted on future developments as they come in.

    Last night I fixed the Stanley Cup image problem on the playoff tree. The cup doesn't rotate anymore, it's now a static image. Well technically, it's still rotating 5 images, but the 5 images are all the same! So I reduced the size of the cup from 612 tiles to 124, saving a huge amount of space and graphic memory. The graphic memory was the cause of my issue after I expanded the banner image for the extra teams. So this is now my current working ROM. All the graphic hacks are done (I think) and the ROM is expanded to 34 teams that can be used in exhibition play. NOW, my next task is to start tackling the season data, trade players, etc. Current ROM: NHL95_34TM_beta_05c.bin

We hope to keep everyone informed of all that is happening in our gaming scene, with a top-down look at events, leagues, forum happenings and Discord chatter. The view from the broadcast booth is often worse than some cheap seats in the arena, but journalists require a sweeping vantage point to see everything that is happening in the game. It seemed a suitable name for a newsletter that hopes to provide a bird's eye view of NHL94 and all of it's retro hockey siblings, so take a minute to get caught up with this edition of View From the Booth . Congratulations to 2017 Bud of the Year@slapshot67! [Forum thread] He managed to code a 32-team Genesis rom that allowed the community to create updated 2017-18 post-expansion roms. I took this opportunity to ask Mr. Shot67 a few questions. It turns out that Slapshot is not his real name, he's actually a fine Canadian fellow from Saskatchewan named Shawn. He would rank himself as an average NHL94 player, who has little interest in online leagues, preferring instead to play at home with friends. He's been a member of NHL94.com since 2006, but admits to lurking around these parts for about a year before joining and searching out modding resources on the forums. A love of NHL93 and NHL94 convinced him to join the site, mainly with interest in creating classic teams in the rom. As any youngster would, he admits to trying to take the easy road first, writing a letter to EA Sports asking them to do it, but oddly never received a response. He praises @wboy's NOSE program, as well as resident mad scientists modders @mack and @smozoma for helping him to earn his modding badges, but credits a lot of reading and ultimately trial and error for his modding successes. I did ask if NHL titles were his only mods, and he detailed an earlier attempt to mod the NES title Rad Racer back in 1999. He jumped at the opportunity to help create the 32-team rom, and would rank this mod at the top of his list of accomplishments. He works as a freelance web and graphical designer in Saskatoon, and is taking a break from modding for the time being. A big thanks to Bud of the Year @slapshot67 for taking the time to chat, and for ushering our draft leagues into the next NHL era. The year has been a mixed bag of good/bad in the NHL94 community, with great successes (Kingof94II - Vegas including a preview of McMikey's documentary, expansion of the classic Genesis rom to 32 teams, to name a couple) and some downers too (shrinking numbers of regular leaguers, the usual forum drama). I feel like 2018 could be a bounce-back year, with many members working hard to expose the casual gamers to this community on many social platforms, new live events popping up all over the country, and unique new league ideas popping up to keep the online leaguers busy looking for games. We've met some new talented players in this years Classic, some who have already shown interest in draft leagues, but we would love to see some vets crawl back out of their caves and rejoin the scene. As gaming companies continue to milk the many millions of gamers out there with micro-transactions and pay-to-play models - the retro gaming community grins with tens of thousands of hours of playable titles and sports gems with incredible replay value. In short, I don't think that the Retro Gaming scene is just for the nostalgic, nor will it be a passing fad. The next generation of gamers needs to witness the sheer amount of existing gaming content out there, and should take that into consideration before feeding the massive pay-to-play, or ad-supported game companies.     I know some of you saw this on already but I thought I'd share here. This was from Facebook this morning. I was at my gate at the airport, sitting down for a couple minutes. I then hear over the PA system "There is a Super Nintendo at security, if this is yours please pick it up.., that's a SUPER NINTENDO!" Lady across from me says, with general concern, "I sure hope the kid gets their Nintendo back" I sigh, stand up and say "yes. It actually belongs to a 40 year old kid." This draws some laughs from the people around me as I walk back to security. I get back to security and the security staffer recognizes me and says"man you can't forget this. I loved the Super Nintendo!" Again this draws smiles and chuckles from people near by. Glad I was able to make people smile this morning.

If you were lucky enough to attend the King of 94 II tournament in Las Vegas, then you likely already know the outcomes. If not, let me just say that it was an incredible display of Sega/Genesis mastery. On the Sega-side, the most probable finals outcome played out with @kingraph and @angryjay93 meeting in the final game, with Jay pulling out a 5-3 win with Detroit over Raph's Buffalo squad. On the Super Nintendo bracket, we again witnessed the ascension of a relative unknown (at least to NHL94.com community). @Jammer - KO94IIsnes was able to punch his ticket to the finals versus @Bob Kudelski and win it all with an incredible 4-3 OT victory. With the build-up and successful staging of King of 94 II in Las Vegas NV now behind us, Fall leagues are starting to fill-up as player interest returns. You can participate in up to 4 events: Saturday: [Sega] King of 94 ($50) OR Duke of 94 ($15) [Sega] Duke of NBA Jam TE ($15) Sunday: [SNES] King of 94 ($50) OR Duke of 94 ($15) [SNES] Duke of NBA Jam TE ($15) There's also a $17 Venue fee, which you pay once but covers admission for both days. So for example if you want to play Sega King of 94, SNES Duke of 94, and SNES NBA Jam, it's $17(venue) + $50(sega king 94) + $15(snes duke 94) + $15(snes duke jam) = $97. Sorry we couldn't get it add up to 94. The King tournaments guarantee 7 games. The Duke tournaments guarantee 4 games. The 94 Duke tournament has simpler rules (no manual goalie, use any team) and is meant to be the casual event. The venue helped us put together some good hotel deals. Possibly some flight deals, but I haven't heard any updates on that front.

    I took the formula/values you came up with and made these Radar charts using http://mdp.tylingsoft.com/#radar-chart Unfortunately it doesn't capture things like sub-worthy players or handedness, or changes in perception of value based on the CB check and toddling. Just thought it was neat.

    There have been many rankings done for tournaments where we group teams into tiers, but something always felt off. It was either too many tiers, not enough tiers, or the personal preferences around which teams on the fringe make it or not into a particular tier. I am trying an updated method that doesn't group teams into tiers so rigidly, but rather offers a scale based on team. Here's my first pass: The idea is that you find a team and then a reasonable matchup will be any other team that shares the color tier. UPDATE V02 AS OF 04/09/19 You can also assume the top teams in a band are stronger than the bottom. So St. Louis vs New York Islanders, STL would be stronger, but that is still a reasonable matchup. However, STL vs TOR, TOR would be the stronger matchup, but still reasonable. TOR can't play NYI though. I found this to be a pretty good exercise in that it will also give you a general team ranking. Some teams are interchangeable that are only in one band (NYI/NJ/HFD/WSH), but it's really the fringe teams that make you think. I included the rosters of main players, bolded the top 50ish, and added home/away advantages. I think this can be printed as a good reference. Having said all that, I've messed around with this enough and came to the point where my mind started turning into mush. So I'm sharing it now with the group to get your input, see if it makes sense, see if I'm missing something, etc. Thanks for taking the time to review.

    Being at my first King of 94 was absolutely AMAZING! Some of the most fun I've ever had and I do a lot of dope s**t as it is lol. It was so much fun and inspired me so much to want to help build a stronger 94 community and retro competitive gaming community as a whole in BC and Western Canada. It was nice meeting you all!     So I hope you like hockey as much as I like hockey! Because I like hockey.There hasn't been a good PC hockey game for a real long time so we've been having to make do with roster updates and mods and such to NHL 08... but there's still some old life left in some of these old games. I'd like to tell you about some of the video work I've been doing to breathe some new life into these old games. If you're a fan of 90s hockey than I'm sure you'd get a kick out of this!The first is a forgotten game from Strategy First called Solid Ice for the PC, the gameplay isn't quite that great but it more than makes up for it in its endless customization. It was one of the first games that let you make custom logos (they even show up on the ice!) as well as custom jerseys and all the editable playerness. It's a really great thing but the gameplay is a bit lacking. Still I do my best to give it that real authentic hockey arena feel. Check out my playlist for it at Solid Ice - A Season (In a Coma) - YouTube it takes until game 3 to really get going but I think you'll like it! The second is a series I started in good old NHL '95 for the PC, which already has a fantastic TV-style presentation to it. I spruce it up a bit and make it look real shiny and polished, and I also added a spin to it by letting my fans in the audience create players and such, even custom goal songs. At this time, you can't play the season mode (it'll crash on player stats), but can create custom ROMs for exhibition play, or playoff play. NHL ’94, the third game in EA Sports’ iconic and long-running franchise, was released in October 1993. A quarter-century later, it remains as popular as ever, even as every single skater in the game has since retired. (The last, 46-year-old Jaromir Jagr, played what was likely his final NHL game in January.) That popularity will be on full display at the third King of 94 tournament, which will be held in Vancouver this October. King of 94 is the brainchild of Mikey McBryan and Darrell Sampson, who connected through the NHL ’94 online community at NHL94.com. According to Sampson, McBryan was working on a documentary about the video game and he wanted a tournament to be at the centre of it. Sampson offered to help run it, and in September 2015, the first King of 94 was held in Toronto. “We had 128 entries,” Sampson said. “64 for each side on Super Nintendo and the Sega Genesis.” Two years later, the second King of 94 was held in Las Vegas. And now, as the game approaches its 25th anniversary, McBryan and Sampson are bringing the tournament to its birthplace in Vancouver. NHL ’94 was developed at EA Canada in Burnaby, and it’s not difficult to spot the Vancouver influence: the Canucks boast the fastest line in the game in the trio of Geoff Courtnall, Pavel Bure, and Cliff Ronning. Bure’s speed makes sense, of course. The Hall of Famer is one of the speediest players to ever play the game, and his stats reflect that. As for Cliff Ronning, well, he knew a guy. “I went to school with the guy that started EA Sports,” Ronning told Yahoo Sports in 2011. “We were buddies. I think he thought it’d be comical if he made me 99 out of 100.” King of 94. HANDOUT / NHL94.COM Fittingly, the reigning King of 94 is a Vancouver resident as well. Richmond-born Jamil Karimani had only just recently rediscovered the game. After downloading a ROM on the NHL94.com fan site, he received an email about the tournament, and decided to buy a ticket to Las Vegas to try his luck with two of his friends. He wound up winning the whole thing thanks to an overtime winner from former Quebec Nordique Valeri Kamensky. “It was a magical OT kind of Game 7 finish with a huge celebration at the end,” he said. Karimani raved about the tournament, which boasted commentators and streamed live on Twitch, and the community, which was nothing but positive and encouraging — a rarity in the often heated gaming community. Little wonder, then, that Karimani plans to attend the Vancouver tournament to defend his title — although he’s not confident about a repeat victory. “I think I’m good for a top ten finish in Vancouver,” he said. Anything can happen. I will be there with my “A” game. But I’ll have a big bull’s-eye on my back.” “As long as somebody from Vancouver takes it home, it’s great.” That’s very likely, said Sampson. Karimani and his friends were three of the best players in Las Vegas, and Sampson has found, in his time among the NHL ’94 fan community, that Vancouverites are often standout players — at least on a particular console. “Literally the best players in Super Nintendo come from your own city,” Sampson said, offering one more reason Vancouver was selected as the site of the 25th anniversary tournament. The King of 94 tournament features separate brackets for the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis versions of the game, as most players grew up playing one particular console or the other, and the gameplay has some major differences. Dedicated fans of NHL ’94 have a lot to say about them, but mostly it comes down to goaltending. “What differentiates the Super Nintendo version is the ability to control a manual goalie with a click of the button,” Karimani said. “But for Sega you have to hold down the button for two seconds before you activate it.” In other words, by the time you get control of your goalie in the Sega version, the puck may already be in the net. But that particular frustration is just about the only complaint NHL ’94 fans have with the game. Otherwise, they love it like no other EA release. “It just has that lingering passion surrounding it,” said Karimani. “These games turn over year on year, but NHL ’94 to this day, even EA sports would admit, it had the most lingering effect, that year, that game.” What makes it so special? In part, it’s the historical impact: NHL ’94 was the first hockey video game to be officially licensed by both the National Hockey League and the NHL Players’ Association — a landmark achievement in gaming. But that’s only part of it. “It was also the first time they had manual goalie, and the first time they introduced the one-timer into the hockey game,” said Sampson. “The replay value on it is kinda timeless,” Sampson added. For many, playing the game takes them back to a time when developments as simple as a one-timer were literal game-changers. Nostalgia is a powerful drug. Karimani pointed to the game’s primitive simplicity. In the quarter-century since, the graphics have improved, as has the artificial intelligence and the complexity of the game’s engine, but it’s only served to underscore how invitingly simple the 25-year-old game really was. “The new versions, the AI has a big factor,” he said. “There’s a lot of cheapness involved. It’s not as pure and genuine.” Sampson wouldn’t disclose where Vancouver’s King of 94 tournament will be held just yet, saying he wants it to be a surprise. Neither could be confirm the registration cost, although he did say it will be less than the poetic $94 the pair charged in Las Vegas. “We’re not in it to make a profit,” he said. “We don’t do it for that. We do it just because we love people to come out and play in these and see how competitive they are.” “People come from all walks of life.     We agree that weight seems to be the primary factor in check success. I haven't done the testing, but some of my anecdotal (based on thousands of hours of gameplay, no research) thoughts: * Point of contact, or angle of check is a big factor. A check right to the "chest" of a player will have a much higher success rate than if the player is moving away/sideways. Basically I think of it as a radius of contact for each player and the more in contact (overlap) they are at the time of impact, the greater the checking success. Picture a semi-circle in front of each player, and the more they overlap when they are in a check, the higher the success. * In this way, agility is important as it gives you the ability to dodge quickly and cause your opponent to partially check your player. Or in my radius analogy, one player moves his radius of contact away, so only 50% of that semi-circle is in contact with the other players. * CB has a higher success rate than plain C, or another way to put it I think the weight difference needed is smaller for higher success. Also, I'm pretty sure checking rating factors in here as Coffey (9 wgt, 2 chk) can't CB worth a damn, but Tikkanen (9 wgt, 5 chk) has tremendous CB success. I'd say Tikkanen can take out any 9 weight player with high frequency. * Being near the boards is no mans land. Everyone dies there. Lindros can flatten Fleury. Those are my two cents to add to this thread. I am intrigued about looking at the code though as I've gotten better at deciphering over the last few months with my '95 hack. To be continued...

    The Matchup Quetzalcoatlus - #1 Detroit Regular Season: 21-10 Playoffs: #8 Vancouver (4-0), #5 Dallas (4-1) AdamWoodrow - #6 Calgary Regular season: 16-19 Playoffs: #3 Boston (4-1), #7 Montreal (4-2) Games 1-4 Recap Calgary won a back-and-forth Game 1 in Detroit. Down 2-1 going into the 3rd, Calgary scored three unanswered, two with less than a minute remaining, and won 3-2. Game 2 continued the back-and-forth. Detroit led by one going into the third, but Calgary was able to tie it up early. A scramble around the net with two minutes remaining left the Detroit net wide open, but Al MacInnis fired wide. Calgary was then called for a penalty, which Detroit immediately took advantage of, and added one more for good measure. Final score, 6-4 Detroit. Games 3 and 4 in Calgary were both tilted in Calgary's favor. Calgary won Game 3 6-2 and Game 4 6-3. Both games were tilted in favor of Calgary. In both games, Calgary jumped to early leads, never looked back, and clamped down defensively. (Calgary coach perspective) Being up 3-1 didn't matter to me. Q won the regular season series 3-1, plus, his manual goalie is so good. I knew it was entirely possible that he could reel off three straight. I felt good about my defense and thought I might be able to shut him down one final time. Game 5 Back in Detroit for Game 5, the Red Wings were in a do-or-die situation. This time, though, the Wings took the early lead; one goal from Steve Yzerman and the other shorthanded from Sergei Fedorov. But, three late penalties, one to Yzerman, put Detroit's back against the wall as the period came to a close. The defense was tight in this one with both teams only having two shots in the period. Lucky for Detroit, both found the back of the net. (Calgary coach perspective) With Yzerman in the box, I knew this was the chance I needed. Yzerman was smoking me in the dot all series long. Finally, a couple of draws without him. Calgary came out blazing to start the second and got an early power play goal from Gary Suter. Unable to capitalize on the remaining power play time, Calgary continued the pressure, but Detroit was ready. Throughout the period, the ice remained titled in Calgary's favor. They won the 50-50 puck battles, and successfully poke checked Detroit's top players all period long. Detroit finished with zero shots, while Calgary put up five. As they entered the third, Calgary continued the pressure on offense and defense. Each time Detroit readied a shot, Calgary was there for a poke. Then, finally, at 3:03 Calgary got the tying goal from Theoren Fleury. He spent most of the game throwing his body around, and his relentless work finally paid off. As the seconds ticked away, overtime was looking like a possibility. But, with 35 seconds left, Al MacInnis came flying down the right side of the ice with one defender closely on his tail. Calgary was looking for the center-drive one-timer, but Detroit was ready. Only this time, while defending the pass, the puck ricocheted off of the Detroit defender and through Tim Cheveldae! Calgary was up 3-2 with 35 seconds remaining! (Calgary coach perspective) I hate own goals and definitely didn't want to win that way. I didn't want to celebrate because in this league anyone can score off the face-off in under ten seconds. Detroit didn't even flinch. They regrouped quickly, Dino Ciccarelli won the ensuing face-off, took it to the net and scored! Eight seconds later it was 3-3 with 28 seconds remaining! What a battle. Both teams traded the puck back-and-forth for the remainder of the third period. Overtime we go. Calgary won the first faceoff in overtime and immediately went to the attack zone. Shortly after, the guy who tied the game for Detroit in the 3rd, Dino, took a costly penalty that led to a penalty shot for Gary Roberts. A penalty shot in overtime! (Calgary coach perspective) I've been horrible at penalty shots both ways all season. I didn't have much faith because Q is one of the best manual goalies I played against this season. The whistle blew, and Roberts took off down the middle of the ice with speed. At the dots, Roberts came to a halt anticipating Chevldae to make the first move, but instead, he held his spot. In a stand-off that felt like an eternity, neither player budged. Chelveldae eventually made his move, but just as Roberts shoulder-faked and buried his forehand into the back of the net to win the championship! (Calgary coach perspective) My only hope was to get Q to make the first move. Once he didn't, I was kinda stuck because I had no momentum. Luckily for me, I made my move just as he moved, so I was able to deke around him and end it. What an amazing ending and series! Series by the Numbers After ripping 11 and 13 shots in Games 1 and 2 respectively, Detroit struggled to get shots on net in Games 3-5. In Game 5 alone, they were held to just five. Detroit's biggest advantage was in the face-off circle winning 63% of the draws. C-Checks were a push. In Game 2, Calgary doubled up Detroit, but Detroit flipped the script in Game 3. Games 1, 4, and 5 were roughly a 50/50 split. Nik Lidstrom led Detroit with 32, Theoren Fleury had 28. Gary Roberts led the series in scoring with ten goals and three assists, followed by teammate Thereon Fleury with six goals and five assists. Stevey Y led Detroit in scoring, getting nine points (five goals, four assists) while Sergei Fedorov finished with five goals and two assists for seven points.

    I didn't take many photos, mainly because I was using my phone for the livestream . But here are a few pics I managed to snap: OFFICIAL TOURNAMENT: Dinosaur spotted playing arcades: Our table of competitors Crowd watching the (very awesome) finals games: We didn't get the turnout we expected, but a lot of the guys were folks we knew from Long Island and/or Vegas! It was great to see familiar faces, something I never considered! In one way, having a solid group of 16 '94 players is better than 32 made up of those 16 solid and 16 "walk-ins" as it's unlikely the "walk-ins" would have made it past the RR or 1st round. Having said that, we will ALWAYS welcome more players because at the end of the day it's all about having some fun playing. These guys who participated all had a great time, and just about every one of them said "thank you for running this tournament", which really goes a long way with me. It's quite a bit of work to put this on, all free, and a simple "thanks" makes it all worth it!
