I think it's been a few months where literally the only reason I've fired up the emulator is to play test the current project
Yeah, I get that feeling. I was pretty deep in my NCAA mod for NHL Legacy a few weeks ago and had to take a break to remind myself “you’re allowed to play the game!”

I don’t play a lot any more, but I still admire the art side of what you do with the game so much.
If we ever make a Hall of Fame for ROM hacking, you are an inaugural class inductee.

Sean kudos on your creation
Currently running a season project with Princeton after completing one with BU
the organ music is amazing
id love to see more ROMs that have this as it changes the whole atmosphere of this ROM and I’d personally consider it overall the most fun in this regard
2 questions if you don’t mind
- any future ncaa themed ROMs coming for a 94 or 93 ROM
- do you have a list of the organ music in this ROM - I feel like I still hear new ones on occasion despite playing many games so I’m curious how many there are
thanks in advance 👍
appreciate your hard work 🙏
Thanks! I put a lot of time into the music, so it’s good to hear you like it.
First: I plan on adding making another 94 project at some point with best alumni from each team at some point, just so it never needs to be updated. That’s not a near future thing though, as I am currently working on an NCAA mod for NHL: Legacy on the PC (via PS3 emulators) that is a suck on my free time. I know you said you’re on Steam deck, and I think it may just meet the specs to run the game, although it might require slightly more CPU power.
Second: there should be a Sean’s Music Patch or something like it under the the Tools. I made the version in these ROMs with NHL music also in mind, so some songs you won’t hear (for example, the Panterra “Dallas! Stars”! goal song isn’t representing any college team).

Hi,
I stumbled upon this while looking for an NCAA hockey video game for my son and can’t believe the amazing work that has been done here. The NHL 94 version looks amazing!! My only question, and please forgive me in advance, is…how do I play it? Is this PC based? Is there anything I need to download in advance in order to play, or is it as simple as downloading the files in this thread?
Any help would be appreciated as I have never delved into this realm of gaming before. Thanks!
Hey there - it is played in RetroArch or any other Genesis emulator.
The rosters are from last year, since I directed my attention at a NHL 16 mod to give a more “AAA”/modern option, but it’s still a blast.
I recommend printing the .txt file included or just having it for easy access to find teams easily, as each rom is only 32 of the 64 teams matched up differently.

Very cool to see college hockey the way you all do it above the border!

Hi Andrew, thanks for checking in!
I actually just got started again this weekend on the NHL Legacy mod project, and made some slight progress on another 94 ROM in the last few weeks (some tweaks to music, top-down planning, etc)
For the latter, I think I will probably do something with alumni for the top 25 or so programs so it is more evergreen of a project, and doesn't need as much upkeep as 60+ teams of current players. Sadly, some of the smaller programs in conferences like the AHA or CCHA might get left out, but will satisfy the bulk of those who play my ROMs based on interactions I've had here and in a few scattered hockey discords - fans of super popular or traditional blue blood schools like Minnesota, North Dakota, BU, BC, UNH, Maine, etc.
I wish I could deliver on the original plan... I set lots of lofty goals last summer... and probably shouldn't have.

And I haven't even touched on all the breakthroughs that people have shared. I've only been around here a couple years, but from a modders perspective, this past year was *very* different from the year before because of all these fine folks sharing so much with eachother.

Usually this just means your starting coordinate is just a few pixels off, or the editing window is too wide/narrow. Nothing too out of the ordinary, you’re on the right track!

I'm so happy to hear that Bet365 Sportsbook and Savings Bank will be involved in your hack this year.

I really hate doing this, because this has the makings to be the best hockey rom ever. And I am a HUGE fan of your work.
1. Do I only see one referee on ice? Maybe 2 refs still isn't possible?
2. I like how the ref sits up on the side to get away from the puck/players... but maybe a little too often?
I'll just leave it at that so I'm not saying anything is "wrong".
Sorry for being computer chair QB. Thanks! I'll still play it as is, whatever the ref is or isn't doing.
That’s just how NHL 14/15/LE were.

That looks incredible! I have SO many questions, but no way you have that much time to answer... can you give a quick outline of the features, options, etc. of the game? Or somewhere I/we can go for that info?
Great job to all on this. I am really looking forward to the release.
More to come!

Ew... now my cynical brain is imagining a meeting somewhere where a bunch of suits are complaining that the developers should totally be able to code a live score feed into the game and use the credit card attached to your Xbox Live account to allows you to buy a "Loot Box" that will unlock an "Ovi Celly" if the Bruins can beat the Red Wings by 3 or more.
I used to play the Ultimate Team modes because of the fantasy team building aspect, so I can confirm that you can basically place bets and you do need to buy loot boxes in some cases to do this. They beat you to it.
Some cards receive stat boosts or sale value increases based on real world performance/results.

I executed the idea first, I also executed the idea.
You also made it much more realistic, reminding me to BET NHL NOW. I always forget to place my television network mandated same game parlay, and with NHL 24 there’s still no reminder.

There hasn't been much in the way of modding Nintendo console games other than '94 here, and that is limited in scope as well.
They seem to be pretty different in regards to the actual composition of the code than GENS games. For example, if you open up a GENS NHL game in a hex editor, the names of players and teams in the text editing side; compare this to SNES games where the code is not as plain to read.
One of the geniuses here may figure it out someday though.

Excited to see! There’s definitely some players earning their way into roster spots too…

I love college hockey, but I'm without a dedicated favorite team, as I went to a D3 school and root for Pitt in D1 sports and neither has varsity hockey. I feel like a kid with NHL again, as this project helps connect me to real-life college hockey.
I am in a similar boat, but live near Northeastern and BU so I gravitate towards them.
I’d love for some more of the northern ACC programs to add D1 teams, especially Syracuse and Pitt who have big brands and natural rivals already playing.

First I've checked in on this project in months, and like everyone else, I'm blown away! A couple questions...I could totally be making this up, but didn't someone create box art for this project awhile back? If so, is there any way we can get it posted? And if not, that sounds like a great project for someone more talented than me! Haha.
Also, is there an updated Discord link for that new NHL Legacy project? I'd love to check that out! Keep up the amazing work!
There was a box art… but I lost my laptop to water damage. Thankfully, my actual working files are backed up and I started making my to-do-lists and such today. I’ll be sure to make box art this coming season.
Here’s an invite to the NHL Legacy Discord. I discontinued my NCAA project over there (this is still very much alive) because working in LE wasn’t really my speed, but may do something with NHL 2k11 because of the easier texture swapping and lower overhead for people to run the game.
Thanks for checking in! -
One of my favorite parts of this site is when a new league ends up getting showcased through a ROM.
Awesome work!

I am sure it will be amazing. I am a big fan of your work. If there is anyway that the University of Washington could make an appearance as a ghost school that would be amazing 💜 💛 🏒 🥅
Well, I'm sure this is a touchy subject... but they fit pretty naturally as a cheat-code/guest school in the eventual B1G ROM now.

Just wanted to give a peek at the next level to this project, my NHL: LE mod. Lots of possibilities, but here’s a draft of what BU looks like (pending white glove tweak).
edit: modding new games is at times a lot more meticulous than fun... this may be put on hold to focus on the cool s**t we do here

Hi.
I made a promise I won’t be able to keep. So I wanted to let everyone know now - I am slightly shifting my focus away from this specific project, which might cause some delays.
This is because I am working with the folks from the NHL Legacy Revamped mod to create a College Hockey fork. NHL 14/15/LE are *my* generation’s NHL 94 in a sense, so this is very exciting to me! This is a very ambitious project as the NHL LE modding community is rather new, so it will take a good amount of time/effort to create new templates/guides/explore the possibilities in the game. I can provide more info to anyone interested
I hope no one is TOO disappointed, and I will do my best to get something out for this project here during the season.
Looking for a good modded NHL game (NHL 2K10 minimum)

I feel uniquely qualified to answer this, as a person who used to mod here a lot and now has shifted to NHL Legacy Edition. There are only 3 (to my knowledge) in progress mods of any games after NHL 2k10.
2KHS is a mod of NHL 2k11 on the Wii, but download availability is sporadic - I don’t have anything but it’s worth poking around. Full engine tweaks and everything, it’s a marvel.
NHL Legacy Rebuilt is a work in progress mod that had a few releases with updated in-game textures and rosters for (you guessed it) NHL Legacy Edition, but right now they took all of their downloads down and have been “working behind the scenes”.
My mod, which had a sort of closed alpha test last month, College Hockey Faceoff is also of NHL Legacy but if you’re not into NCAA it might not be your speed. Here’s a link: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1BoKWfpkfKmyRdgN94_ZukVfkLJ2GvZvS. Very incomplete, but expecting another release this spring with most of the big brand college teams, not just the east coast.
Mods for these modern games are very uncommon, as there’s not a huge draw like College Football Revamped or College Hoops 2K Reborn since hockey is a smaller sport. As someone who has built/used 3 PCs and seen these games emulated on all of them, NHL Legacy is by far the most CPU intensive sports game I’ve seen so the power requirement blocks out a lot of people who would otherwise be interested.
