    4) Be a good bud. NHL'94 is a Gentleman's Game.  Celebrate properly when something good happens, don't flip out when something bad happens. That's '94. We've all been there. Shake hands after the game and move on. Have fun. Both in playing the game and enjoying the surroundings.

will be sipping on some Gentlemen's Jack enjoying a day of hockey among avid gamers....only in NY

you seem well aware and up for the challenge.  I hope you win at least one game.  the Genesis community is a far deeper pool to play in, so it should be easy enough to get some practice in before April.  have a good rookie season!

thanks buddy! I will be sure to get plenty of practice in before April. Not sure if it will help any but I am looking forward to it.

good luck making the switch.  I find that Genesis action needs to be anticipated more than SNES which can be reacted to more effectively.  it is more of an RPG in that you select an option and wait as the result play out in front of you, but you can't await your next turn while watching your button pressings play out in animation or you'll fall even further behind.  and the light players become heavy in the human-controlled checking math, but not while in the control of the AI.  and a bunch of player-control buttons are missing.

I set up the emulator and was watching computer play last night to get reacquainted with the Sega version, you are right it looks so unpredictable what AI does with the players on the ice. One thing I noticed that can be a HUGE problem is AI control of the goalies...they wander off to get the puck randomly and that can spell bad news if anyone hustles to get to the pucks first.  One timers are so unpredictably fast in Sega too.  Defenses seem to overskate a lot...good analogy with a RPG scenario. I read/heard about the light/heavy checking glitch but will have to deal with it as that is how the game was programmed....I can tell already I will not like making this switch. ESPECIALLY with the lack of one button push for manual goalie control, that makes a HUGE difference in many head to head games I have been involved in with SNES gamers....sheesh

Hardcore would be for the folks who enter because they are hellbent on taking down a @kingraph or @angryjay93 or whoever is the best at a given moment.  Basically, those who buy into Rick Flair's "if you wanna be the best, you need to beat the best" mentality.  But, also, a competition for those causal players who don't play in online leagues or maybe in even "walk-ins" who remember the game from their youth and wanna see how they'd do against similar skilled folks.   These people aren't likely to beat the best (ala 1980 Olympics) and probably, arent interested in trying and potentially getting humilated.

    Now you're talking!

Obviously, the winnings, for each scenario, should be very different.  However, if promoted this way, you "could" pull more folks out of their comfort zone to wanna try their hand at a tourney.  You would just need to figure out a way to seed each bracket based on the sign ups.  Maybe the winner of the casual bracket also gets entered into the hardcore bracket?  I dont know... just throwing ideas out there.

Cash games can definitely make for interesting play, it could like you say draw more people out of the woodworks too...

NYC beers are too expensive to effectively drown such sorrows.  Plus, there are plenty of folks around watching so getting your butt kicked in front of a group of folks stings that much worse.

Lets get a keg going, or everyone BYOB, or recession specials beverages of the 'malt' kind, that should do the trick to ease the pain of a butt whoopin.

Personally, I am looking forward to the online P2P games and playing other gamers around the NHL94 Universe. I might even consider changing my name to Nature Boy :super_man:

16 players I had. It was an SNES tournament. There's lots of us. My point was, people don't want to pay to get their butts kicked if they are generally not good at the game. They'll pay once or twice, but I think that many eventually  will stop attending.

Understood....love that it was a SNES tournament. I thought people want to play to win LOL. Amazing there's a good following still for this 25 years strong! It's one of the only reasons I keep my SNES around is to host games whenever the guys are around...crazy 40 year olds still have a devout addiction to the best hockey game ever.

Something I've tried with the last Saskatoon tournament is to essentially divide the playoffs up so that guys are facing people at similar skill level. As Segathon mentioned, a lot of guys don't want to get their butt kicked. They just want to enjoy it.

The A, B and C playoffs that I had, everyone enjoyed it as a lot of their games were really close.  The top 3 guys in A still got rewarded with a rpize and the B and C champion also got to pick a really awesome prize. I think the guy in C won every playoff game(6 straight) all by 6 goals. If we just had one overall tournament, he would've got slaughtered.

To me, that is the biggest difference in all of this and I also think the biggest factor in people wanting to come back.

I'm gonna test it out again with the Sega tournament I'm gonna do in late spring/early summer.

how many total players in this? at least 12 or 15? Measuring the skill level will always be a challenge, but then if gamers dont want their butts kicked why bother participating? LOL

Where are the SNES gamers at damn it!?!?!

The King of 94 and Edge of 94 Midwest events always had some activities the day before.  The NYC tournament has only been for the day.  NYC has been opportunistic in that we obtain a good deal on the bar space and can keep the entry to a pretty cheap $25.  I figured it would mostly be locals given the dense population but we had about 10-15% travelers.

10-15% true disciples of the game LOL, to make the journey to the city that never sleeps for some NHL94 shenanigans, only in New York...

On another note, I was able to download Retroarch and Discord last night successfully, now I need to figure out how to navigate on both apps and make sure the settings are good for P2P play. Figure I can get in some good practice before April comes around...

    Good Stuff Raph

Yeah it comes down to playing a game we loved as a kid and going to these events you normally meet some pretty great people with the same interests.

I think having more events with Duke style as an option is key.

I couldn't make it out to the MN tourney last week, and told my crew about it and a few expressed interest, but in the end they didn't want to pay the event fee to get their butt kicked.  They still have flashbacks from a tecmo tourney I brought them too where they said the other players made roster changes so quick from muscle memory that they just saw a flickering screen. :)

muscle memory is enough to make a grown man reconsider going into these tournaments....separates the true gamers from the wanna be's...looking forward to making it out to one of these events, first time for everything!

KUDOS to all involved in setting up these events, forums, podcasts, videos...the community is the real deal!

Yes, Discord is the app we use to chat, find out if anyone is online for a game, etc.

Check out the getting started section on www.nhl94online.com and that will help you get set up!

Thanks Raph, looking forward to getting set up and get my online skills going. I am going to need practice for this NYC tournament! LOL

if I have any questions or doubts I will be back on the forum posting, hopefully this is not too hard to setup!

The Fall Classic league finals have been played, and man oh man, things got crazy!

I was feeling pretty confident with my Bruins heading into the matchup with @schwartz and his Blackhawks. Especially after defeating @annatar who is arguably the best online SNES player. But Schwartz is a highly skilled veteran who always gives me trouble. We had split our season series which included a 6-2 Chicago win. On top of that, I saw that he had been playing a few warm up exhibition games against other strong players. So I was not taking this series lightly, at all.

Games 1 to 4 (Chicago goes up 3-1 in the series):

Sure enough, the Hawks came out firing on all cylinders. I quickly found myself trailing in the series 3-1! Schwartz was playing ridiculous. Dangling through the zone, pulling my D out of position and threading cross-crease passes for easy one timers. His manual goalie control was insane. He read all my one-timer attempts with enough time to get over for the save. Things were not looking good. I would have to win 3 straight to win the championship.

Game 5: (Boston fights back to 3-2 in the series):

I knew I had to get really serious if I wanted to win this thing. So back in Boston for game 5, I was somehow able to put together my best game of the series. I was able to take this one by a score of 5-1.

Game 6 (Boston scraaaapes another one out to tie the series at 3-3):

Now with Schwartz up 3-2 in the series, things got extremely intense. Game 6 was an absolute defensive battle. It was 0-0 heading into the 3rd period, when I took three penalties with less than 3 minutes left in the game. I managed to get to OT, still down a man, when Cam Neely was able to break loose and pot the gamewinner. Boston wins 1-0 in OT! Phew!

Game 7 (most insane finish in the history of Classic League):

Series tied 3-3 and I knew I had a good chance to win on home ice with the powerful Bruins. But this game was the complete opposite of game six. Lots of goals! The game was tied 3-3 with 4:23 left in the 3rd. This is when things got crazy. Chicago took over and potted three goals, including an absolute dagger by Joe Murphy to put Chicago up 6-3 with just 1:10 left in the game.

I began to accept my fate. Another loss in the finals, as I've done many times in Classic league and Dynasty league....

    But then what happened?

I just said F it. I won the draw and went straight to the net. This was the sequence of events with a minute remaining in game 7:

    • Wesley scores with 1:00 remaining. 6-4 CHI leads
    • Oates scores with 0:25 remaining. 6-5 CHI leads
    • Moog pulled for the extra attacker
    • Neely scores with 0:15 remaining. 6-6 tie game!

Overtime went back and forth until finally, Neely buried a one-timer for the win. Boston wins 7-6 in OT, and completes the epic comeback in both the series and the game. Wow. I'll post the game winner video later if I remember to open the state and capture the replay.

I have to hand it to Schwartz. He played as well as anyone I've ever seen. He was giving me fits. I probably did not deserve this win. I felt really bad for Schwartz. I've been on the other end of these epic collapses many times. But probably nothing as drastic as this. Luckily, Schwartz is the man - he's got a good head on his shoulders and he's one of the best guys you will meet in this community. So congrats to Schwartz, and thanks for one hell of a series! I hope to see you in NYC bud!

I need to see this to believe it. BIG PROPS on an epic comeback, that is one for the ages...I'd probably never get over a loss like that LOL
