  4. Spring '22 Classic League Registration! Registration Opens: Tuesday, 3/1 12:30pm EST Registration Closes: Monday, 3/21 11:59pm EST REGISTER HERE For those of you who have registered on the NHL94Online site before, then registration will be easy. You just need to choose "Yes" for the question "Have you registered for a league before?", type in your site user name and password (NOTE: This is different than your forum password and user name, unless you made it the same), and choose the league you will be joining (right now, you can select Genesis or SNES). Then, hit "Submit" and you will be placed on the waiting list. It's that easy. For those of you who have not registered on the NHL94Online site before, then there is a little more info needed to complete registration. You need to choose "No" for the question "Have you registered for a league before?" and enter a user name and password (it's common to use the same user name as your forum name or Discord user name). You will also be asked to fill out some more information about yourself (email, location, timezone, Discord user name, system preference). Then choose the league you will be joining (GENS or SNES). Then hit "Submit" and you will be placed on the waiting list. You will then need to play a test game to make sure your connection is set up properly. This does not affect your place on the waiting list, but you cannot play in the league without playing the test game. If you have played in other online leagues before, you are technically confirmed already. Please PM me (tecmojon) and I will change you to Confirmed status. Registration deadline will be Monday, March 21st. That weekend, we will hold a Team Selection Draft. The draft order will be randomized. After the draft is completed for each league, the schedules will be released and the league will begin. If everything goes smoothly, the league will start the following week after the draft. Schedules may be posted before that time, which means you can start playing, but officially the league would start on that Monday. Stay tuned on Discord leading up to March 21st for more information on the Team Selection Draft. NOTE: This season, we will be using RetroArch version 1.10 for playing online games. Everyone who is playing in the league needs to make sure they have this set up. I suggest everyone play a test game to make sure it is working. Some of you already have experienced Netplay via RetroArch, so please help the others who have yet to try it out. I suggest learning how to set up direct connect (IP reservation and port forwarding on your router) - there are many videos and helpful members of the community to assist. Please feel free to contact me if there are any questions/problems! (either via PM here or Discord). For more info on setting up direct connect using IP reservation and port forwarding, please check out this guide. Note: If you are having trouble/issues with setting up direct connect, please post in the #help channel on Discord. I would suggest giving it a shot yourself first, before requesting help, so at least you will be familiar with certain things when those helping are asking you questions. There may also be situations where you cannot do port forwarding on your router (don't have access to it, ISP prevents it, etc). This will be handled on a case by case basis. LEAGUE INFO The season is 40 games. There will be no limit on registration this season; as long as you register and played a successful test game, you will play. We will divide the registrants up into different League Levels based on skill and experience in online leagues. The different League Levels will be decided after registration is over. If you register after the registration period is over, you will be placed on the Waiting List for the league. Don't worry if you end up on the Waiting List, there is a strong chance you will end up taking over a team during the season! 40 game leagues will have the same 6 games/wk checkpoints as the past few seasons. For those coaches that are new, I suggest practicing and becoming familiar with a few teams. This way, you will have multiple teams on your "Draft Board" to select from during the Team Selection Draft. Note, there will not be more than 14 teams in a league level, so with at most 14 teams drafting, you will have a good shot at a Tier A or B team. You can contact any veteran coach to play some exhibition games, or practice against the computer. You must join our Discord Server (link at end of post). Whenever you are available, you can post in the #testgame channel on the server and request a test game, or use the #exhibition-games channel for practice. Good luck! If there are any questions or problems, feel free to PM us here or on discord tecmojon or halifax. INFORMATION FOR NEW GUYS Read This - Guide for New Members If you are new to the league, welcome! We are a big friendly community here, and there are a number of guys who are always around willing to help the new guys out. First things first, you need to register for NHL94.com (this site), as well as on the nhl94online.com site (registration link at the beginning of this post). It is also required to have a Discord screen name, since that is the main method of communication for scheduling games. Once you are registered, the next step is to set up a test game. You can use the forum links below and post your availability. You can also post on the Discord server, in the #test-games channel and request a game (this is recommended, since there are more active users checking in on Discord). One of the veterans will send you a PM or a message on Discord (or feel free to add some veterans onto your Discord Friend List and message them yourselves). A test game needs to be played in order to make sure your emulator/network settings are correct. Once the test game is played, the veteran will confirm you on the nhl94online site. Once this is done, you are set until the season starts. A few days before the season starts, usually the day after registration ends, we will be holding a Team Selection Draft to choose teams. The draft will be held in the forums, so please make sure you register! An email will be sent out to all registrants before the draft, so it is important to register using an email you commonly check (also check your Spam or Junk folder). Once teams are selected, the schedules will be put up on the site and you can start playing your games. There will be another post announcing the start of the season, with information on how to log games, contact other coaches, and how to make the playoffs. Also, keep an eye on the Discord, as information is usually posted there first. Everything you need to play can be downloaded in one package from the nhl94online.com site. On the main page of the site, the Downloads section is located bottom right. This contains the ROMs used for the league, along with the emulator cores and the current RetroArch frontend. I hope we get some new guys who recently participated in some of our live tournaments!! Again, if you have any questions, PM me via the forums or discord.
  5. this was my first NHL 94 live tournament experience and it was a great time. @Edge of '94 Midwestand @LeifEriksonran a great tournament, things flowed great, and the games were always running fast and furious with little downtime. like corbett mentioned above, having a room right upstairs for breaks was great and adds to the experience. what everyone else mentioned above is all true. it was nice to finally meet @DanK @angryjay93 @corbettkb and @Scribe99 in person instead of just over discord. DanK definitely added to the experience and will always be welcome to sit two feet away from all my competitors announcing the games
  6. Sure, why not. Whatever league you want to put me in.
  7. Name, age, occupation, location, system Jon B; 41; Director of IT for a health care company; Blaine, Minnesota; snes & gens What hobbies or other interests do you have? Cooking, baking, reading When did you get introduced to the game NHL'94? How did it happen? I had 93 for SNES growing up, it wasn't that good. I met @segathon through the Tecmo community and played 95 at his Segathon Tournament. And then the pandemic started, I joined the 94 discord since I knew about it thanks to @halifax, signed up for SoChel, and started playing 94 for the first time in my life that spring. When did you get introduced to nhl94.com and the online community? Were you playing between these two dates? (That is, between first becoming aware of game, and first becoming aware of nhl94.com.) Introduced to the online community via association with the Tecmo Super Bowl community, so I always knew of its existence since about 2006. Up until 2020, I had not played 94 in person or online. What are a couple things that you love about the game? You can win or be competitive with any style of play, not all the most successful guys play the exact same way. Room for creativity in the gameplay as well, plus there are always different ways of performing new/existing techniques which adds to the fun and doesn't make the learning curve as rough. Are you a gamer in general? What other games do you play? Yes. I own a Switch, so I play Breath of the Wild, Metroid Dread, Mario Party Superstars, Mario Kart. I am trying to get in to Football Manager on my PC, but the time commitment to be any good at it is daunting. Do you follow hockey in real life? Any other sports? I watch hockey when I can, though I am an Oilers fan and its tough to find Oilers games on in Minnesota consistently. I follow cricket, rugby, and soccer. If you have been to a live tourney, what was it like meeting the real people behind the screen names? Any big surprises? I have never been to a live NHL 94 tournament (my first will be in February in Minneapolis). Having been to plenty of live Tecmo Super Bowl tournaments, meeting the actual guys is always a blast. What is behind your screen name? (Origin story, if there is one.) In the Tecmo Super Bowl community, I was known as QB_Browns which I chose since it was funny and generic. When I went to Segathon for the first time, I was called Tecmo Jon so all the guys there knew I was not any good at 95 and I was a friend of @segathonso I just kept it for the 94 community. Favorite NHL94 player in game (and why)? I always thought Sergei Fedorov was so cool on the ice, so him I suppose

  14. noted in the team selection post above that this is all pending the home/away split issue being resolved. Though if we max out the number of participants, could be a moot point in the long run as you have also mentioned.
  15. I'll keep this here as a an editable post on teams claimed just in case people are desperate for a specific team. Also, these are subject to future free for all if we need to adjust for home/away splits: @annatar- commish/Anaheim @TecmoJon- Mr. Smithers of the operation/Florida @kidswasted- Boston @dcicon5148- Buffalo @Bob Kudelski- Ottawa @Mooney- Rangers @Triple A- Islanders @thatdrizzle- San Jose @dangler- rom creator/Detroit @koke_45- Vancouver @baberg18- Montreal @McMarkis- New Jersey @lego- Quebec @Gambi- Toronto @birdman8686- Calgary @TheProfessor- Hartford @Harriman/Slippery Pete - Washington @Jammer - KO94IIsnes- Pittsburgh @DanK- Chicago @Decadent - St. Louis @Ellis - Edmonton @Fed- Tampa @angryjay93- Winnipeg @skills324- Philadelphia @stewy- Dallas @TokenToma- Los Angeles
  16. Another piece of the puzzle is the ability of the top level players to understand how the AI works from both experience and game knowledge. @danglerintroduced me to a better d-man partnership for Montreal using Odelein instead of Schneider, which works better for my style of play because the way Odelein positions himself on defense is 'better' than Schneider. @angryjay93and I have discussed the spread of AI defenders in the defensive zone and how he sets up his man controlled defender depending on zone entry and how he expects the AI to respond. @danTML7has mentioned on his stream how elite players place their offensive pieces in general areas before passing during possession moves after zone entry which allows for better organization of attack. @JSchmidtand I discussed while playing his ability to eliminate AI threats from his consideration because the AI skated out of position which allows him to attack my skaters with no worry of leaving a true threat open, forcing me into movements that are self defeating. @kingraphhas discussed chemistry issues (as has AJ) on streams about certain teams inability during games to have the AI move in expected ways to maximize the talent on the roster and how elite players recognize it early enough to adjust on the fly. We've all seen UncleSeth manipulate his AI attackers through judicious use of Defensemen entering and exiting the zone to create matchups for other players the AI has moved into the zone at speed. C level players are not thinking on that level - the question: 'why did he do that?' when referring to an AI player doing something 'odd' is greater in C. B level players such as myself understand that the AI is going to move the players in a certain way, and try to manipulate our attacks/defenses to maximize what we perceive the AI to be doing. low-A players start to manipulate through their own skating and player movement the AI coupled with a greater understanding of what the AI is doing depending on circumstance. The top A players are actively maneuvering their players on the ice to 'force' the AI to compensate by moving into better, more advantageous positions on the ice. I've exhied/league played against all of the top guys and outside of my own mistakes (which i need to fix and is a big part of moving from B to A) - the huge differentiator, once adjusting for the experience gap, is the ability of the elite players to 'know' where the AI players are at almost all times while also forcing the AI to adjust to better positions through movements in both the attack and defense phase of the game. N.B. - AI is just an easy way of talking about this, it is obviously a set of logic in the game to move player sprites in ways depending on the various IF-THEN statements that define the player sprite movement on the ice
  17. That is kind of what I'm after. No one is going to willingly choose Pittsburgh v Winnipeg, but some people rightly (or very wrongly) think Dallas v Buffalo might work as a matchup. Is there something funky out there that might be fun? Or something unexpected that plays really nice - in my experience something like Quebec v Islanders can be a nice matchup of teams that is unexpected.
  18. We all have seen some basic matchups that people tend to default and use.... Chicago v Rangers, Boston v Pittsburgh, Philadelphia v St. Louis These teams all have strengths and weaknesses. Does anyone have an out there matchup that they like using? Or what do you look for in picking a matchup? Fast defensemen? Heavy forward lines?
  19. This worked for me. Thanks @chaos @kidswastedand @McMarkis
