  1. The above is correct, and if I’d bothered to pay attention, I also would have noticed this value is linked to the first part they say about their ratings, as per the table below. “Don’t knock” appears twice in the code. “Forget” appears three times. So essentially there’s 22 things here in 11 combinations you could edit. The quotes are paired (somewhere) in the code to be 12 sections apart in the order they appear in the ROM. This creates an odd situation for values B-F, which simply move onto the next piece of text. For the first quote this is the standalone phrase “my ratings, they’re” followed by the “Awesome!”, “Extreme!” etc, quote group. For the second quote this is the player positions. So a value of B creates the quote: “I’m Bonelick and I play starting center for the Black Hearts - my ratings, they’re my ratings, they’re center”. A value of C : “I’m Bonelick and I play starting center for the Black Hearts - pathetic! my ratings, they’re left wing” And so on. So stick to 0-A. Here’s a couple edits I whipped up with the pairings and stand alone text: Also, did you know these stats go up to 11? Actually they go to 15. You can raise all the stats to a B-F like the NHL games, but doing so made Bonelick incapable of moving. Not sure how it affects each stat individually. This doesn’t directly link to the unique character quotes as first suspected. I edited this and the other 0-A value for Bones Jackson (he has a 0004 and an A) to see if that altered his quote but it didn’t, so the pointers for that must be elsewhere. It also isn’t the coach quote about the players for the in-game Reserves screen (“Hits ‘em hard” “In over his head” etc). I tried changing the value to 1111 to see if anything obvious was different or if I could force the game to glitch or crash, but not encountered anything yet.
  2. Not had much chance for a deeper dive, but can confirm this value determines the "check my rating" quote. I've changed Bonelick's value for this stat from an A to a 2 and he's gone from saying his ratings are Awesome to Lousy. All of this data is located at offset 330050 and the words are all jumbled around ready to be pieced together like a jigsaw. "I'm x and I play x for the x" is potentially one piece. I was expecting the full "Behold my ratings, they're awesome" quotes to be one piece too, but it appears to be three. So you have "Forget" "Skip" "Ignore" "Behold" etc and then "My ratings, they're" next, followed by "Lousy" "Awesome" etc. I guess what this means is that, if you wanted, you could presumably make a quote like "I'm x and I play x for the x" "Behold" "My ratings, they're" "Lousy" Where the pointers are for these, whether every player has his own set of pointers to mix/match these as you wish, or whether they are pre-created sets located elsewhere in the rom, I don't know yet. There's also text for the line they play on and their position. Don't know yet if this has to be manually set for each player or if it gets linked automatically. What's also interesting is there appear to be two unused quotes for how good/bad their ratings are. These are "Pathetic" and "Wretched" and I'm pretty sure I never saw them used in the final ROM. Changing the value to 1, and Bonelick now says his ratings are Wretched. Changing it to 0 and they're Pathetic. My laptop ran out of battery mid-test, but I got halfway through testing this rating for Bonelick and it was following the order from the previous post. They're also listed in this order in the ROM, so it's probably safe to assume it's correct, but still worth a double check. So values 0-A are: 0 = Pathetic 1 = Wretched 2 = Lousy 3 = Mediocre 4 = Marginal 5 = Adequate 6 = Excellent 7 = Radical 8 = Killer 9 = Extreme A =Awesome Need to test what happens putting in B-F.
  3. Ok, I've looked into the player ratings and there's 9 different "Check out my ratings they're..." quotes which makes this – – look incredibly likely to define what the players say. Making it even more likely, is the fact that there is no exact science to what OVR rating the quote equates too, as there's crossovers between the tiers. So out of a maximum of 100 (excluding enforcers), a player with an 89 OVR could say their stats are Awesome or Extreme, whilst being rated a 79 - 83 OVR gets either an Extreme or Killer. Probably points to human error and the OVR being totalled up mentally (and probably in a rush) on the fly rather than being linked to an internal equation – but I know nothing about coding, and I'm not able to test it out in a HEX editor at the moment. For anyone interested, the order the ratings tiers go in is: Awesome Extreme Killer Radical Excellent Adequate Marginal Mediocre Lousy From the 5-6 teams I checked out, the ratings generally seem to have been intended to have been grouped in 10s. But with the lowest OVR I've noticed being a 20, it's more like each step is worth 6-8. For modding you could just assign these however you like if there's no actual coded correlation to the stats, but it may also be of some interest for anyone playing the original. Goalies have been rated on the same scale and, from what I can tell, enforcers haven't had their 2 special abilities counted towards their total. So, what about the special characters like Bones Jackson, The Puke Bros, etc who have their own unique quotes in the Team Description section? Well there's 6 of them– –and 6 of these, so it's gotta be, right? Well, that's what I was thinking until I remembered these same 6 players have their own unique quotes on the All Star teams too. So they all appear 3 times, you're looking at 18 quotes altogether. So unless there are other values going up to 0018, maybe those values aren't for that. If it is, the question is do these unique quotes automatically override the 2-A value, or is there a 0000 or a 1 or a B value that denotes which group the quote gets picked from? It does potentially mean there's less restrictions than first thought about modding. I've been working on the assumption the rosters have to conform on top of the original teams/players, but if the unique quotes can be applied to any player, that really opens things up. You just lose the unique player avatar to go along with it (unless the pointers for those are found too.) If I get chance at some point I'll fire up a HEX editor and take a poke around.
  4. I don’t know anything about the initial hacking process, and the more I think about it the more I think this is less likely, but is there a chance one of these are pointers to the “Check out my ratings they’re killer/excellent/etc” text on the team description screens? I’m not sure how many variations there are to see if the numbers match up.
  5. God damn. Subconsciously doing this has been such a huge roadblock for every creative endeavour I’ve ever attempted in my life. I’ve always worn both hats at the exact time and really struggled to separate or them. This is a fantastic guide, and I’ll definitely be trying to apply the quoted advice to my every day life too.
  6. Double post so the edit doesn’t get overlooked, as it turns out I was wrong, and misremembered my experience as a kid and from a couple months ago! Just started up EA Hockey via Double Header, and Yugoslavia and USA aren’t selectable for the playoffs. But they do appear as opponents — I must have got my home/away teams mixed up when cycling through the matchups last time I checked. I clearly lacked basic observational skills as a kid, and apparently they never improved. My bad 😬
  7. I first heard about this a couple months ago and it kinda confused me, because I vividly remember owning EA Hockey as a kid, but I don't remember either team being unable to compete in the playoffs. I dunno about Yugoslavia, but I definitely would have noticed USA not being able to. I figured I must have misremembered but... I owned the Double Header version, an official PAL exclusive released around '93, or at least after they dropped the EASN branding. Sure enough when I fired up a ROM, Yugoslavia and USA are playable in the playoff mode. Which means they went back and fixed it up for this release, along with a few other things like the EA Sports branding. I dunno if anything else like the bench sprites got fixed up, or if it has any use for the community, but thought it was worth noting if anyone was interested in what other changes they made to the code.
  8. Hm, my browser, apparently. I checked your reply on my phone and the download is there... so I've logged onto my wife's MacBook and sure enough it's there also. On my other laptop with Microsoft Edge it still says the file is unavailable. Weird. Oh well, no worries, I can transfer it over to the laptop now
  9. This looks great, but the attached file from the original post seems to be broken. Any chance of a reupload? 🙂
  10. The ÷/+ buttons did the trick! Thanks for the support @Sean @smozoma 😄
  11. So uh, any ideas what's going on here, guys? I'm just getting started on Tile Molester and using Slapshot's fully editable NHLPA 2015 30-team rom to have a bit of practice using TM, but I've got this going on for all the graphics. Same happens in TLP too. The weird thing is I had this problem a couple years ago when trying to use these programmes on my Mac through a Windows virtual machine, and I just figured my Mac was somehow causing the issue. But I got my hands on a dirt cheap laptop today for sole purpose of editing some ROMs and I've been presented with the exact same issue. Am I missing a plug-in or something, or have I overlooked something incredibly obvious? I’ve been on Windows 10 both times if relevant. Thanks for any help, I've been messing around in NOSE for a few years but I'm completely new to this side of things!
  12. Amazing to have a 32-team ROM for ‘93, this and a few of the mods made from this base have found their way into my regular rotation I’ve got a few of my own projects lined up I wanna use this as a base for, any idea if the weight bug (and which one) is already applied? Surprisingly there doesn’t seem to be any mention of it anywhere — I’ve always just assumed it was!
  13. Sorry to revive a 6 year old topic, but I just wanna say this is a great little discovery. I've been working on a Madden '93 mod and figuring out the attribute patterns the original game used really helps convert the real life stats into the ratings, whilst also keeping the originally intended balance. But it's been a bit more intimidating applying that to the NHLPA 93 mod I'm also working on. Partly because there aren't many obvious balancing patterns, partly because in Madden no player has more than 4 skills and they're mostly positionally unique, and partly because I'm working on something obscure, so there's not many stats to convert into ratings (and they don't easily carry over into emulating real life performance either.) Considering stats like endurance, it would feel a bit arbitrary picking between a 20 or 26... but realising team ratings are split into tiers like this is making figuring out my ratings a breeze. Here's the table I'm using as my guide. It's essentially cutting the available ratings down from a choice of 16 to 8, or 6 if you count the highs and lows as minor tweaks of each other, but retaining the nuances and subtle differences between all the players in the game. When you consider that each player is only being rated 0-6, I can see why they streamlined this for NHL 94. However, I gotta disagree with the consensus that this streamlining was superior, and back the original statement that these ratings are brilliant - even moreso for modding. A bunch of guys rated nothing but 4s across the board in NHL 94 will all play subtly differently depending on their team in NHLPA 93. Sure maybe there's very little difference between a 20 and a 26, but there is a difference - games have been rating players out of 100 for over 2 decades now (and still drawing complaints from players), and NHL 94's contemporaries like Madden were rating players 0-15 until the last game on Mega Drive/Genesis. Again, I get the streamlining for 94, and it was probably further influenced by the embarrassment/awkwardness rating a guy a 0 for intelligence caused with the NHLPA, so it was better to just slice the bottom end off (and change the name of the stat) to keep 'em happy. I'm not saying it's bad, it's just not my preference. But looking at it purely from a modding perspective, separating them by tiers ensures you get those subtle differences, and it's removed a lot of the busy work trying to do so manually so I don't accidentally create a bunch of clones, of which there was some danger with in a 93 mod, and a high likelyhood of doing if I was working on a 94 mod. Thanks @Matt55, this is a really underrated find! 🙂
  14. Awesome stuff as always, it's great seeing those logos on the team select screen, and the subtle little nods that it's actually a closeup of the jerseys and not just the logo. Lot of nostalgia for this tournament for me, being in the UK. First live hockey I ever got to watch, and I always remember that shootout. (Sorry, still too soon?) I saw some magazine reviews from the time mention this is the only video game related to the 1994 Winter Olympics thats worth a damn
  15. Hey this sounds great! Last year I started a little project to do a Mutant League Hockey version of NHL 94. I was hoping to change tons of stuff but anything beyond NOSE is way over my head. I’ve come up with Mutant League versions of all the NHL 94 teams (including possibly being sacrilegious by changing some of the existing MLH versions of NHL teams!) I also have brand new logos created for all the teams. Backstories/histories for some of them finished or planned. The next step was to make Mutant League versions of the players but I never got around to that. I’m more than happy to collaborate if you’re interested in seeing what I’ve got
  16. @UltraMagnus Have you got any advice for Madden 92? I've found all the team uniforms in Hex Workshop. But I have no idea how to independently change colours for home and away team banners and the end zones. I can see they're all linked to a different part of the uniform for each team. Green Bay's end zone colour is linked to their home number colour, whilst Minnesota is linked to their helmet. Minnesota's secondary home banner colour is linked to one of the skin tones. I was gathering it works like the centre ice logos for NHL 94, but I can't get Tile Molester to run, or Tile Layer Pro to display anything properly, so I can't really tell if it needs to be edited there or if it can be changed in Hex
  17. Covers for both '95 editions: IIHF 95 IIHF 95 - World Championship Edition
  18. Damn, great work. Gonna echo the props for the attention to detail and the muted colours on everything just making everything feel super old-timey, it's really immersive.

  21. There’s a ‘Battery Saves’ folder within the openemu folder. Change the extension to .sav, remove any existing save file in that folder for this game (should only happen if you started the game up first). IIRC the Open Emu folder isn’t easy to find. Best I can remember is to right click ‘Show game in finder’ on a game in open emu and backtrack from there.
  22. Just out of curiosity... I’ve noticed the Ravens and Titans never make the 30 team cut of any roster update for any 80/90s NFL game. I’m not saying there’s better teams to swap out, just wondered if there any particular reason it always is these two teams?
  23. I haven't had time to get stuck in, but I've had a quick nose around and it looks awesome. Great stuff again If it doesn't go in the same folder as the ROM, there should be a folder somewhere where 'battery saves' are stored. If you have other games with battery saves stored in the same core/emulator folders check which file extension they use. If they all use .sav change it and it should still work – it has for me in OpenEmu.
  24. Oh man, that fits in so perfectly with the taunting aspect and general attitude of the original game
  25. Unexpectedly, I actually found time to work on something! How's this?
