Love your work, was bummed to not see the recent D1 College Hockey prospect signings on the rosters

    Anaheim

    Sam Colangelo

    Cutter Gauthier

    Carolina

    Bradley Nadeau

    Jackson Blake

    Chicago

    Frank Nazar

    Columbus

    Gavin Brindley

    Montreal

    Lane Hutson

    San Jose

    Collin Graf

    Thanks! I appreciate it.

Yeah, as for late season signings, my roster mandate is to keep each roster stocked with the 14 forwards, 8 defence, and 3 goalies that have seen the most minutes of ice-time for the club that they are on. I then consider exceptions for players who would have made the cut if they had stayed on one club all season, or players who were otherwise instrumental, even if they technically had less ice time than a teammate. Because the college players usually join the season so late they rarely make that cut, UNLESS they catch on as a regular in the playoffs. Last year I added Matthew Knies for the Leafs, once it became evident that they were playing him as a regular. If there are any new players who suddenly seem to become regulars in the play-offs, please let me know!

  2. Hey everyone,

    Good news, bad news.

Good news. The playoffs edition is almost ready! Still a lot to do, but I am 100% on top of it, and will try to get it out as soon as possible. All rosters and lines have been updated. Will start on end of year ratings tomorrow morning.

Bad news. I promised a version 3.0 with all new re-balanced gameplay, and arcade mode patches, etc. Well, version 3.0 (playoffs edition) is coming, and the gameplay will have a minor revision, but the all new re-balanced gameplay and arcade patches etc. aren't coming any time soon. I have spent loads of time on this, but I still need even more time to make sure it is balanced just right. To that end, I will need some beta testers this summer. PM if you are interested in helping out.

Good news. I wasn't actually planning on coming back for a '25 version, as there is another. personal projects I wanted to spend time on. But I am not going to abandon my '94 gameplay re-balancing project, so I will have to come back for at least one more season, in order to share my work with you. So, as long as my health holds up, I am planning a '25.

Stay tuned for a '24 playoff edition any day now.

    cheers,

    -Adam

  3. @George THANK-YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS! I wish everyone would report bugs as clearly as that.

Bad news, is that I don't know how to improve that. I totally agree with you, it would definitely better to get those two animations to line up, but I really don't understand that game logic for how that section works. If anyone ever publishes enough info on it, I will try to adjust it accordingly.

p.s. While I can change the order of how the box fills up, if it doesn't go left to right, it ends up having consistency problems with the rink view, which has errors if it doesn't go top to bottom.

I will say that I did do a bit of looking into this one, but... I did use the blue of the player shadow for economical reasons. Long story [that I can't really explain very well] made short, the problem I found is that there just simply isn't enough pixels to get the point across in a manner that I liked.

Best I could manage was to just change the dead eyes to the skin tone to match the old SNK NES look.

One of the difficulties with this, is that it may not look good in still, but once many different frames are updated, the illusion of detail may hold up. But that's a lot of work to invest in a potential dead end.

I wonder if a solution like this might work. Adjust the colour palette so that the darker skin colour is one step darker in the Red channel. Then re-appropriate that colour for the visor area. Something like the attached.

I think it is the goaltending that makes it hard for me to score. They seem to be drawn to the puck almost magnetically and are virtually never out of position. Even when I play just a shootout the rounds always get into the teens before someone scores, even if the CPU is one player.

If you are able to release an arcade patch or a rookie mode that would be much appreciated!

Thanks for letting me know, that helps. I definitely will be making those patches! It just could be a long time (weeks or months) before I'm able to get to them.

Adam, when a player gets a penalty it goes to the scoreboard view and you see a player skate to the penalty box. You can clearly see in the animation of the player getting into the penalty box that the legs won't align with the top part of their body. It's especially evident if the player goes to the left side penalty box.

I'm just not seeing this, hence why a screen cap would be so useful. Could be my emulator. Could be my eyes. Could be my brain. Could be how I'm interpreting your words. But the top and bottom of the players bodies are lined up for me.

Sorry, where can I find the nhl94 modded rom with all the original players but all the graphical enhancements, etc?

Sorry, I haven't done one like that. Check out the forums for some other great ROM hacks that might be closer to what you are looking for!

I have not played in many years and greatly appreciate all the time, skill, and just plain hard work that has gone into these releases, but I find I'm struggling to score with any consistency and was wondering which, if any, of these releases contain the Arcade Patch that has been mentioned?

Hi there! I haven't put out an "Arcade" patch since v.2022.6.x. In that version I also had a "Rookie" that made it easier to score.

I am planning on putting out patches sooner than later, but not promising any release date yet, as I'm still not close to being able to get that done.

What aspects do you think are making scoring the most difficult? The goaltending? Defensive checking? Shot accuracy? Any insights would be appreciated.

So the only thing I noticed in 2.5 is when a player gets a penalty and they walk up to the penalty box, their legs don't align with the placement of their bodies once they enter the box. That issue is still there from the original game. Maybe the left box, the players can align from right to left and the right box from left to right.

Hey George! Can you send me a screen cap of what you mean? I'm just struggling to understand.

As far as changing the order of how the boxes fill up, they both have to be left to right in order to accommodate how the system draws the graphics in Rink view.

you're the best Adam. Thanks. A couple of things you forgot. In your wishlist: Make a Sega CD version. Or get the sega CD music to work on the genesis version. Isn't the SCD version the exact same game as nhl94 with added videos and better music, etc?

I'm going to have to leave that one to someone else. Just too much other work to do. If you, or anyone else can make some progress on this, I would be interested to see if I could try.

One thing I did notice though, for whatever reason the power play clock (or cycle clock) doesn't always tick down each frame.  The count is off a few frames, but it's so small it shouldn't matter in the long run.  I didn't bother looking at that cause.

When I was timing player energy depletion rates, I thought that I noticed that  Time Clock and Penalty Clock sometimes got out of sync by about a second in the original version. Perhaps I just imagined this… has anyone else seen this happen?

Regarding the penalty clock not updating on some frames, I wondered if this could be because  65,536 divided by a 1,092 countdown interval is actually 60.01465201465 fps, and so if the penalty clock is set to 60 fps, they are not in perfect sync.

I thought that using factors of 65,536 would fix this. For instance, setting the game clock speed to 65,536 divided by 2048 (0800), with a penalty clock speed set to 32 (0020). However,  the dropped frame problem you noted still persists. Anyone have any ideas why that might be?

In the original, this problem also exists, but to a much lesser extent, of course.
We here, at our tournaments, monitor this moment, and it definitely takes place. It even spawned a few local memes, if you understand)
We'll start playing on version 2.3 now, and when that happens we'll be recording its.

THANKYOU for all the info. I don’t believe any 2.x release will be any better. I will try to look at this in the future, but I suspect this might be one that is too much for me. If I get a potential solution, I will PM you with it!

Best wishes to you and all our Russian friends. :)

I'll be honest, I'm sure it would be more interesting to see it in person, but as far as on TV, I stopped taking the skills competitions seriously about when I started to notice the NHL stopping to take them seriously. Like when the breakaway competition started becoming more like a slam dunk competition. Ovi with two stick, Kane with a cape, Voracek with... Gaudreau. And then they changed the voting process to stop fans from having fun with it and adding a guy like John Scott to the team.

Me too. They killed it. But this year they brought it back, no judges, no showmanship, period. Only actual skills based competitions, in a more competitive format. They went from the worst ever last year, to arguably the best ever this year. Players were visibly gassed competing for the million dollars. Stamina actually came into it.

p.s. I was also pleased to see that the finalists were 1. McDavid, 2. Makar, and 3. Matthews, since that’s identical to the top three ratings in my ROM. Not exactly going out on a limb, I know. :)

These allegations are preposterous and won't hesitate to be as litigious as Nintendo Company to defend myself from such defamation.

It is unfortunate that I cannot ask for my esteemed, and very much still living, colleague to reply as a proof of the ludicrous nature of these allegations, as I'm sure that as someone with alleged ties to possibly shady online actors based in countries that may be hostile to us, will be well versed in the act of creating ghost accounts or logging in to other people's accounts in order to fool the general public. Ghost accounts that might also be used to puff up download numbers in order to attract better sponsors.
But of course I am not making any accusations of any wrong doing because that would not be responsible, and my lawyer may have advised me not to comment.

I would say that soon is still the timeline for the upcoming update, and you are certainly welcome to watch the All-Star festivities while you await the next release, but I understand that there is no real reason for anyone under ten to want to do that.

Oh shoot, I forgot, what were we fighting about? Got sick again, and lost my train of thought. Back awake now. Next time I'll take notes, and see my flame war through more throughly. This time I'll have to concede defeat.

To tell you the truth, I actually really enjoyed the skills competition events this year. Or did you already know that, and just wanted to preemptively call me a 10-year old? Hmmm. Could be 4D chess. Or I'm just regressing in my old age.

When the all-star game was in Toronto in 2000, I went, and it was surprisingly way more fun in person. Although the highlight was the pre-game warm-ups. Unbelievable getting to see all those great players at once, what they each do before the game, and to compare their relative skill levels. That was the game the Pavel & Valeri Bure just lit it up. Watching them together, it made you wonder why Valeri never had a greater impact. Lindros was the player the really surprised me though. He was a way more skilled player than I had ever realized. Really eye-opening. And Forsberg was great, but I had seen FoPa play twice before, and he had already impressed me as the best player along the boards.

    Hello Adam.
We, the Russian NHL94 community, respect your work and even held our tournaments on your rom. But during the game, one interesting point emerged - if the goalkeeper turns on the manual, then the probability of not hitting the target increases sharply. Sometimes it even becomes funny. The puck can fly above the goal, past the goal, although the distance is minimal. This can't just be an accident - it happens too often. Tell me, is there a way to fix this?

Thanks for your kind words! To tell you the truth I have never noticed such a thing. I will look out for it as soon as I get back to test playing. In any case, I have *no* idea what causes this. Is this something that only happens in my ROM hack, or is it in others? Is it in the original?

I have very limited understanding of the gameplay engine, and have only changed a couple of variables that should affect that. That being said, there can always be unintended consequences to even the most minor of changes. If it is only my ROM hack that has the problem, there are a few things I could try stripping out, to see if it makes a difference. If you would have the time / interest to test this for me, send me a PM and I can output a few different variations for you to day. But if the issue is in all the ROMs, it is *way* beyond my technical expertise. I'm most a guy who takes the hard work of others, and refines it into a cohesive package. I don't really have the knowledge for the more technical aspects.
