OK, so the other night, my fiancee and I are sitting on the couch, trying to figure out what to do…

Me: "Hey, you still haven't played my NHL ROM! Do you want to give it a try now?"

    Her: "Sure!"

So... try being with someone for 24 years and do the same thing.

Me: "Hey, you still haven't played my ROM! Do you wa-

Her: "F@#$ off, A Million Little Things is on. Be quiet"

I don't know about the pointer, but the main menu is a different font from the one used everywhere else. This is due to that mesh/checker style background that is uses.

The font itself is located here if it helps track it down.

Thanks so much for following up and sharing the knowledge. I've been swamped and can't physically get to anything at the moment.

Interesting, I'm curious to know more about what you are seeing with your player sprites. You clearly have a vision.

Black borders sound interesting, kind of comic-book / anime like. I'd love to see how that looks! If you don't ever push it further, would you at least tease us with a screen-cap of what could be?

For the player sprites, my plan is to do more dithering. It's REALLY time consuming but looks great. Same as the black border. I'll put up a few proofs when I'm able so you can see what I mean.

I'm not sure if I should feel relieved that I am not the only one who uses that same 10/90 rule.

Guys... this is exactly how I felt doing the HNIC theme...

Awesome! I'm sure that you *probably* thought of this, but just in case you didn't, you could limit the white to the home skate blades to ensure that you always have white in your palette, and then colour your sticks however. I mean, technically you could have the white colour in the Home palette and not use it for anything, but I think it looks PERFECT for the skates!

One tiny little thing I noticed, was that behind the visitors bench, on the boards and glass that lead into the dressing room, there is a seemingly stray pixel or two.

Lastly, what did you change with the goaltenders? Something about them just looks really nice.

Also, your nets. Hadn't noticed those before. Nice.

Yeah I think I'm gonna have to do a V2 of the player sprites. I'm not entirely happy with them overall - I figured by using the skate blade & sticks together that I would free up even more available colours, and totally forgot they affect ice colours. For what I was trying to do, it worked - but it can be WAAAY better.

I toyed with an idea of putting a black border around the sprites to make it a bit more cartoony (and for something "different) and it actually looked super cool. I'll save that for a different concept, but I am still going to look at some way of refining the shading as I feel there's not enough depth.

There are definitely a few stray pixels from an animated fan back there I believe. Another one of those graphical items that are on the list as well. I was gonna let that one slide, but if you caught it, someone else will too LOL!

With the goalies I did a few things:
    - removed the 70s style facemask and streamlined it to a cage
    - assigned the pants colours to the mask to differentiate it from the jerseys and make it stand out
    - simplified the pad design on the front and back

The nets are actually stock 30-team ROM. I changed the crease though. I shortened it so it was nicer proportionally to the ice width.

Thank you for the technical review on the visuals. I appreciate this and it will help my next release get better.

This is still my "first" ROM too. LOL

They've done this with Pro Evolution Soccer... some guy created a companion app (incomplete at the moment) which runs on the side (he called it 'MatchUp')... it's a GUI interface (which sits in the background when playing the actual game) that creates a save file for PES and once the game is played inside PES it pulls the result in... Such an interface would need to offer a way of simulating results accurately and realistically however. But the possibilities of creating seasons/tournaments etc are endless. Like a full management sim but with the gameplay of the classic we all know and love

That's exactly what I was thinking! It could be done, it's just figuring out how to do an auto save to pull stats from that I don't know about.

I'm sure if I mapped out my thoughts to make more of a cohesive design doc, a programmer could give me some more insights on the technical aspects.

HAY... CHATGPT, DO MY HOMEWORK FOR ME PLEASE

I honestly think it would be easier from someone to develop a platform that did all that on its own, and used an embedded ROM for gameplay, rather than pushing the original to go that far.

I've thought about the exact same thing. If you built a standalone season/dynasty program that creates a schedule and gives you the option of playing/simming the game by jumping to a save state matchup where you can take it from there... the issue is creating that save state AFTER you've finished the game and extracting the stats to go back into the program and fill out the necessary tables to track the season stats.

I've thought a lot about it, tbh...

  7. I've always wanted to mod 96 as it is one of my favourites of the era, but like 95 it is very tightly packed in terms of flexibility for additional teams. I honestly believe you'd have to extend it to 4MB in order to get it to work, and even at that, a lot of the mathematical functions for calculating stats and building season data would have to be altered and expanded to accommodate 32 teams.

It's a big job. Not saying it can't be done, but it would take a lot of free time and dedication. (I have neither atm, so don't ask LOL)

  8. An update: I am hoping to put in a few fixes for v1.1 and have the Playoff edition sorted as well. Hopefully this week I'll have both ready to go.

    From there, the plans are

    - figuring out the backgrounds for NHL 95 ( @UltraMagnus has been very patient waiting for these)

    - more 90s seasons & playoff editions (from 91-92 to 99-00, meaning roster updates, more teams and more HNIC branded front-end graphics changes for each one)
    - inserting the Coach's Corner theme during the period intermission.

I might consider doing the 2000s or just making some patches for specific ROMs to change them from the NHL94 stock to HNIC of that year.

  9. Thanks, folks! I appreciate the kind words and giving it a spin.

There have been a lot of great hacks for current eras, but just a few older gen versions from guys like @clockwise and @CoachMac that I love. I want to help add to that list to keep that era alive and exciting.

A lot of cool hacks for other things like ads and music etc were something I wanted to try out. Since the modern day teams and rosters are so brilliantly taken care of, I decided on the era of hockey that really got me excited about the game (80s and 90s)

Looking forward to correcting the travesty of the Jets loss to the Oilers after taking a 3-1 lead. No popcorn allowed!

You'll have to wait just a little bit longer until the playoff edition then. The trades will be up to date, in order to enact your revenge.

Holy [whatever expletive you so choose], is that a perspective warp on center ice?!?!?

Curious about one thing though - why the late 90s Bruins logo?

That is a perspective warp. Not sure if I like it though. There's a false forced perspective ingame and it's not always evident. I may change it back in newer versions.

And good catch on the Bruins logo. Didn't even notice that change.

Oh, did Belfour recently face an Al MacInnis blast? It looks like he has a hole in his glove.

Liking the masks. Looks like the old Cooper birdcage.

The "hole" was to simulate the webbing in the trapper. If it's too much, I can change it back. Just trying to do something different.
