  1. Throughout history, mankind has sought to find the ultimate hockey video game. While this journey may have ended in 1993 with the advent of NHL'94, one question remains: which is version is the best?

The National Video Game preservation society, (NVGPS) in conjunction with Adopt a Game; a non profit organization that provides homes for neglected and abused games, have employed I, clockwise, to conduct an experiment to conclusively determine, once and for all, which edition of NHL '94 is gooder!

Fortunately, the aforementioned sponsors have given me complimentary access to the ultra high tech instrumentation required for the exiperiment, while I have provided the specialized laboratory (aka my basement) to facilitate this high profile study.

Here are the tools that will be implemented for the exiperiment:

    - Genesis / Snes systems and NHL'94 carts

    - Latex gloves; to prevent cross contamination between versions during the experiment

    - Yuengling Black & Tan Lager; to ensure that the test runs smoothly

    - centrifuge with test tubes and beakers filled with water tinted with food coloring; for effect

    - Herrs ruffle potato chips; cause a man gotta have his chips

    - monocle and white lab coat; so I look smarterer while performing the study

With all the elements in place it's time to commence the analysis.
All facts will be presented, and at the duration of the experiment the points will be added up to determine the victor. May the best version win.

#1. Genesis version has harder hits: the hits in the Snes version appear"nurfed. For instance: when a player gets decked and injured in the snes version he just sort of lays down as if he was in a lazy boy recliner. 1 point for Genesis

#2. Genesis version has a better siren to signify a goal: How was this left out? Someone really dropped the ball for the Snes version. 1 point for Genesis.

#3. Snes has better hat trick animation: when the hats fly on the ice it looks way better on the Snes version. 1 point for Snes.

#4. Genesis has better intro music: Best. Song. Ever. I want to be buried to this tune. The Snes intro music is cheesy, plus you have to wait for the puck animation before you can start the game. 1 point for Genesis.

#5. Genesis has reverse replays: It's cool to check out a sweet goal from an opposite angle. Considering the Snes version was released after the Genesis version, there is no excuse why the Snes version doesn't have it. 1 point for Genesis.

#6. Genesis has highlights from other games: kick ass feature, I love watching these. Even though it's a novelty thing, it still rules. 1 point for Genesis.

#7. Snes players have blades on their skates: Genesis skaters float on magical booties. Genesis crew had 3 tries and still didn't add blades to skates on untill '95. 1 point for Snes.

#8. Snes has better arena SFX: When the puck caroms off the glass and stuff like that it sounds better on Snes. 1 point for Snes.

#9. Snes players have tape on their sticks: 1 point for Snes.

#10. Genesis rinks have better center ice logos: Snes ones look like they were made with a Fisher-Price, 'My First Airbrush kit'. 1 point for Genesis

#11. Geneis version has better game play: Mostly due to the better frame rate. This is what makes or breaks any game. it's the most important part of the experiment which is why the winner of this issue is awared 2 points. 2 points for Genesis.

#12. Genesis players have faces: Snes players have no emotion because they have no f**king faces. Stupid. 1 point for Genesis.

#13. Snes has better ice color: 1 point for Snes.

#14. Snes version hase better bench graphics: Nice touch. Still, they could have added a goal judge to light the lamp. 1 point for Snes.

#15. Genesis goalies skate: On Snes they hover around the ice. 1 point for Genesis.

In final analysis, It was a arduous experiment that, in the end, required two Yuengling Black & Tans. A true testiment to the fortitude of this game. But which version prevailed?

Final score: Genesis 10, Snes 6

Gensis version is triumphant! *Band plays*. Snes hung in there but couldn't go the distance.

  2. Hey, What's up hhhdx_era, Which version of '94 are you playing?

If it's the gens version: go to netplay under "file" and enter a user name, then click on the "all servers" tab to ping the servers.

Some of the popular servers for '94 are: Godweapon1, Sonic Cage Dome and Anti3d

Hope this helps, hit me up on aim sometime for a game.

edit: forgot to say make sure your using gens 2.11 for netplay. It's on the dl section of the main site if you need it.

  3. Played 2on2 for about 3 hours last night.

Once everybody got the flow going, and teammates got it together, there were some awesome tick-tack-toe one timers. Lots of high scoring OT contests as well.

Here is a screen cap GorilliaOilers took from one of the games:
    showletter0zu.jpg
I think we won this game 8-7 in OT. Games were split with each team winning 5 games.

In short, 2on2 is a blast. Im throwing GorilliaOilers name into the hat if anyone is sitting on the fence and hasn't signed up yet or doesn't have teammate.

    So far we have:

clockwise / Cam Kneely - Penguins

    HABS / toronto1cougar - ?

    Evan / in54time - ?

nhl92fan, pavel, gr8199kings, Nick, GorilliaOilers and ken. Someones has to join forces out of this bunch. Only 4 teams are necessary.

The tournament could be the best of three between teams. There would only be six preliminary games before the finals, I think everyone can handle this. Six games can be done in one sitting.

Lets get the show on the road.

  4. All you have to do is transplant the gameplay and graphics from 93/94 into 95. Season/stats/trades are already there.

Only thing I would like is: when a player is injured have an ambulance come out and run over everyone on the the ice while picking up the injured player, like in Madden 92. And if a player gets crunched into the boards have him wobble around for like ten seconds (he can still carry the puck/shoot/pass) like when a player gets punched out bloody in 93.

  5. This is great, I remember hearing about this.

Can people call in and get on the air? I want to share some tips and stuff, like tell the listeners that playing 94 nude-sitting indian indian style, is the only way to connect with your inner 94..and the only way to truly become...One..with 94.

    And..Have you ever played 94...On, weed man? It's wack..wack!

  6. The elevated goalie ratings are something I really like, it makes the game more challenging to score.

I do agree that some of the player ratings don't make sense, mainly shot accuracy, but I just tune a player in nose if I feel somethings out of place.

The new net/crease is cool too.

Overall I'd give the roms 9/10.

  7. I think there's a difference between them & I think it mainly lies in the controller being used. I happen to be used to the console controller, so I prefer to play it on a console.

The only difference I can detect is in the controls: They seem tighter on a console. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with calibrating the controlls in an emulator or what.

Emulators are great: I can make vids from the save state replays, netplay, etc...But I enjoy playing on a console more if I have a friend over.. mabye it's cause I'm a sucker for old times, growing up playing with a gang of friends in front of the tube.

I've been thinking of buying a md-pro 64 plus from http://www.tototek.com/ so I can play the 2006, all-star nhl94 roms on my genesis. Has anyone bought one from them?

  8. This one hockey game I used to play at my local arcade as a kid. It was a shoot out style game, the goalie would maneuver back and forth while the plastic puck would shoot out from one of the two holes from either sides of the golie. You had three sixty second periods to one time as many goals as you could.. The guy would yell "He scores!" and the crowd would go wild every time you'd put one in the net...I loved that game!
