  1. Yep, #nhl94 over on IRCNet is for the Genesis version, since that's what they prefer.
  2. I found a single opponent with whom to play this online back in 2002 and I used to think to myself, "We're probably the only people in the world playing this game on computers against each other over the internet."
  3. See, I think that that would actually be the least fair way to do it, and I don't think it would satisfy anyone.
  4. Good to hear from you again, kgman. Yes, you can join my league (though players ought to have AIM for purposes of arranging their matches, since it makes arranging matches about a thousand times easier.) ANYONE can join my league who meets the minimum requirements at ANY time between now and the Apocalypse. Just head on over to the signup thread and leave your personal info.
  5. Why don't we just let players use whatever team they want? Then no one can complain and everyone's happy.
  6. Ugh, not a draft, please. I hate drafts. Absolutely hate them. I don't understand what the obsession is with drafts in the Tecmo community. I mean, the original game didn't have drafts! Why have drafts now? They take forever and you always get people who don't care about them and therefore don't draft. Did I mention I hate drafts?
  7. I would guess that he means setting the frameskip to a high value instead of Auto.
  8. I think you dismiss the value of managing lines too much, and I think it's actually easier to "out line-change" your opponents without penalties because when you have penalties you have more stoppages. In any case, no line changes makes it too easy to mindlessly hammer "C" while on defense, instead of rewarding the player who's a little more moderated with his speed bursts. You also leave open the possibility of a player gaining a big advantage late in the game if the Sc1 lines are tired, his opponent picks Sc2 at a stoppage, and then he calls timeout and puts his rejuvenated Sc1 line out there trying to tie the score late. I'm not crazy about penalties, but I think having offsides increases the skill required as well. Any way we can hack an "Off, with offsides" penalty setting?
  9. You have a few options, currently. First, there's my league. I'm listing it first because, come on, it's MY league! We're over at http://www.nhl94.com/nhl94cup/. It's a new league, and it's designed to be friendly to new players. It's ongoing instead of seasonal, the schedule works on a weekly basis (so you have 3 games/week to play each week, all against the same person), and scheduling is based upon winning streak, so if you struggle at first you'll get scheduled against other struggling opponents. There are a couple of other options, too. Evan (who runs this site) has his league over at http://www.nhl94online.com/. This one's seasonal, and we're close to starting season 2. You should still be able to get in on it, though, and it worked pretty well last time. Finally, there's Donny's league over at http://65.36.133.56/nhl94/. It's also seasonal and has sophisticated stat tracking. There are probably a few teams available right now if you ask over on their messageboard (link to it on the league page).
  10. So which is it? Do they add strategic elements, or do they just slow the game down?
  11. I just played 5 minutes of a 2-player game by myself, let player 2 have the puck, and just spent the whole first period hammering C while controlling my keeper (since the crowd goes wild for that kind of thing). I hit 136 db with an average of 114 db after 1 period.
  12. Sure, try hitting me up on AIM.
  13. Online play will almost always be done with 5-minute periods for three reasons: 1) games take less time and, therefore, require less of a time committment from the players 2) more games can be played in X amount of time 3) (the biggest reason) shorter games = less chance of a desync Regarding penalties, I wouldn't miss them terribly if they weren't used, because there is quite a bit of randomness to them. Still, I would rather play with them than without out because offisdes can't be used without penalties. I believe that offsides is a must for high level competition simply because it increases the amount of skill required to be successful. Yes, the CPU players will often go offside just ahead of your puck carrier, but a good offensive player can recognize that most of the time and either pass to the player or pull the puck back, and a good defensive player can recognize this and try to hold up the opposing puck carrier enough outside the zone to let the CPU players enter early. Line changes also add to the level of skill required since they can give an edge to a player who rearranges his lines effectively and who can work his lines to give himself opportunities to play his rested top line against either an opponent's tired top line or rested second line. Additionally, if the game's being played with 5-minute periods, fatigue isn't a huge problem, because there's just not enough time to wear everyone out, and if you are finding that your guys are getting tired really quickly..........stop hammering the C button so much.
  14. NHL '94 isn't popular enough to have people sitting in the major Kaillera servers at all hours waiting for a game, unlike a lot of the Kawaks and Final Burn Pro fighting games. Your best bet is to try and get AIM contact info for people who like to play it. As far as servers go, in the USA the games mostly take place on the Anti3D.com or GodWeapon servers.
  15. Having different ROMs with the same name won't crash Gens and Kaillera. It'll just make everything desynched from the start.
  16. It was one of the Fins. I wanna say...swos?
  17. This ROM is a modified version of NHL '94 with only 3 players on each side of the ice (not counting keepers). To make it work, you have to set penalties and line changes to ON, and I think you have to set 5-minute periods. Teams shouldn't matter. It's good for practicing faceoffs and one-timers, and also for 4-player online play. Enjoy. 2v2.zip
  18. You mean you've had a guy carry the puck into the net and he dislodges the net before the puck scores? I'd never even come close to something like that happening in over 10 years of playing. And I'm not crying about it as much as I'm just stating how astounded I am that it actually happened, and the fact that it happened so quickly just adds to the shock. I stand by my previous designation of the title, however.
  19. We have a new winner in the Lamest Thing Ever competition. I was playing over at NHLGamer and my guy shot the puck at the keeper. The keeper saved but gave up a rebound and was out of position. Another player of mine swooped in and grabbed the loose puck. He was heading straight for goal carrying the puck, and nobody got in his way. HE DISLODGED THE NET BEFORE HE SCORED I don't have a picture because frankly, there's no need.
  20. A terrible loss. You surely have won the day with this vorpal stroke. My technique for speeding up the game: Horse tranquilizers.
  21. I wouldn't say that you dominated my ass because I use my hands to play the game. Perhaps I would do better if I sat on my Sidewinder and proceeded to "shake my booty". In any case, I was disappointed that you failed to complete the application for the league last time. I can only hope that the process will go better for you this time.
  22. Says the rookie to the sophomore.
  23. We should introduce this guy to kgman...unless he IS kgman!!!
