  1. I went to the Senators/Leafs game on Saturday in Ottawa. 65%-75% of the fans were wearing Leafs jerseys. No exaggeration.

Unlike American cities, who just don't care about hockey, Ottawa let their building get overrun by opposing fans. Pathetic.

I would like to nominate Sens fans as the worst in the NHL. Smoz, you could probably add some insight on this one.

  2. ....lol

hes right about the wave tho, hows that a bad thing? Because yo havent seen one in Toronto in the past....40 years?

Almost - they did it in the preseason last year when they let in people for free.

The wave is kinda gay. It's one thing to do it during commercials timeouts, but people who do it during the game don't care what's happening on the ice/field. In other words, a bad fan. This year during a Jays game I was at, someone tried to get the wave going in the 9th inning, in a one-run game. People supported him. I think if you don't want to pay attention during crunchtime in a game, you're a pretty shitty fan.

Also, the wave is the product of some 19 year-old who just had his first beer and is looking for attention.

  3. :D just kidding, though. my real point was -- how do you define a good or a bad fan?

How's this as a start for bad fan criteria:

    -Poor knowledge of the game

    -Pick fights

-Take chirping of opposing fans too seriously/personally

    -Boo their own players

    -Do the wave

    -Can't hold their liquor

    -Bring their ugly, sloppy, girlfriends

-Are more excited about the "WHICH SECTION IS LOUDER?!" game during commercials than the game itself

-Wear suits in the platinum good sections

-Order merlot instead of a beer in the platinum sections

    -Don't cheer

-Get into heated arguments with their friends that the Tim Horton hanging from the rafters is "NOT the doughnut guy" (my personal favourite)

    -Are racist

-Only watch the game when their team is good

    -Call the sport "ice hockey"

    Any additions?

  4. if you say mtl for the worst fans in the nhl, then you also gotta say mtl for the best fans in the nhl.

    Frustrating, but true.

On the internet I find Habs fans are the worst, but a lot of that is due to the Pittsburgh vs. Montreal thread on this forum last year. Canucks fans got cocky this year, and are a close second place.

When not hiding behind a keyboard, I've seen the Leafs play in Montreal, Ottawa, Pittsburgh, and Philly. If I am going to take the people that I was around those days as a generalization for the entire fanbase, then:

-Montreal fans are the smartest, and actually, really, really, hate you, your mother, your team, and their own country.

-Ottawa fans apparently wear Maple Leaf jerseys, boo Alfredsson, and chant "go Leafs go."

-Pittsburgh fans keep to themselves unless they just had their first beer. So about 1/3 of the arena keep to themselves. They like to spend money on the newest throwback jersey and put Lemieux's name on it. They try to impress you by name-dropping players that are "really good" in the same way your girlfriend will try to impress you by pretending she cares about the hockey game you're watching. They have all banged Max Talbot at one time or another.

-What Philly fans lack in knowledge, they make up for in passion (read: alcohol consumption). Most of the chirping I got here was all in good fun, which is fine by me. It helped that any time someone got mad I could just yell "Doc Halladay!" and we'd instantly be best friends. The women were actually way more angry than the men, although if you looked like they did you'd be angry too.

I find that in the US since hockey's more of a niche sport with a blood-and-guts image, a tougher crowd goes out to the games. I wish these types would replace the suits in the ACC.

I'm going to Boston to see the Leafs in December, so I'm excited to take a piss then.
