  1. If it's possible for you, Tantrix, you could also bring in some of the guys here from TBN and play in some leagues. We'd like some new blood here! :)

I will certainly create a thread to re-direct them here! I don't know how many classic gamers there are kicking around at TBN, but I'll spread the word asap! It's the least I can do after everything this site has provided for the VIHL.

  2. Another large bump for a very old thread.

I have been so busy the last calendar year (finishing teachers college and working on the side have kept me away from here, sadly), but I am now only 5 days away from finishing my program and I am getting back into the thick of the VIHL over at thebreakaway.

We are approaching the end of our second season (yes, it took us nearly a year to get a season done, but with only a few people working as staff to sim games, it takes time) and the playoffs are just around the corner.

We would absolutely love to have some fresh blood for season 3, and our sign-ups are still open. The links above still work for registering and viewing the league forum. I believe you have to sign up and log in at the site to see the games sub-forum (which is where all of our game highlights/stats/game day threads are kept), so check it out if you have a few minutes to spare.

Even if you aren't interested, thebreakaway has 2 other, much larger sim leagues that may interest you, so there is a lot to offer. With our league being the smallest, I tend to have to reach out and kind of plug the league to find sign-ups. We have 7 teams, and are hoping to make it to 8 for a proper 2-division format in the future, but right now I just want to extend the invitation to come and check us out, and perhaps sign-up for a classic league run using a lot of the great mods/hacks developed here at NHL94.com

Thanks guys, and sorry for the massively old thread bump

    Regards,

    Eric

  3. 7 is bad defense.

    7 is good offense.

Check this post that shows the relationship between the default values in the original game with the goals for/against for the real teams from 1992-93:

    http://forum.nhl94.com/index.php?s=&sh...ost&p=74718

Chicago let in the fewest goals that season (230), and they have a 0 rating.

San Jose were the worst, letting in 414 goals, and they have a 7 rating.

The reason the All Star teams have 7 offense and 7 defense is probably that the score in the All Star game that year was 16-6 -- not a very defensive game.

Ah, I see. Thank you so much for clearing that up for me!

I hope you continue to develop this program for NHL 94. It does do some great things that NOSE is unable to achieve.

  4. Hey Smozoma, this is a great program, thanks a lot!

I just had one quick question. For each team's defence level in your program, 7 is listed as "weak", where as in the previous threads that talk about these ratings in NOSE, list that a 7 rating would make for the best defence. I may just be confused, but I was wondering which value actually represents the best possible defensive AI?

  5. Big bump here!

I just wanted to update everyone on the league. We have just completed our first season + playoffs, crowing our champ just yesterday in a 4-0 sweep in the finals. We did end up switching to game videos, so all of our league and playoff games are captured and uploaded in full for each recap

For season two, our league is expanding from 5 to 7 teams, and we are more than doubling our player numbers for next season with a draft class pushing 80 people.

If you guys are even mildly interested, you should go check it out!

The forums the league run on require you to sign up to see our game results forum, but it's worth it to see the amount of effort that is put into each gameday!

    You can register RIGHT HERE

Once you have registered and signed in, our league forum link is HERE

You can check out every part of the league as a registered member, I just didn't realize that guests couldn't see the VIHL Game Results forum.

Anyways, check it out if you have some time to kill, our season 2 sign-ups are going to close soon and we are looking for a few more defenders if you are interested. It's a lot of fun, so give it a shot if you are looking for a fun new idea for a sim league!

    Thanks!

  6. Hey guys.

I had a quick question in regards to the pause screen banners for each team.

I have created a new team, which is primarily purple. The logo, select team screen banners and jerseys are fine, with everything showing up in the appropriate colours. However, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to change the palette colours on the pause screen banners to allow it to be purple.

I've been using wboys image tutorials since I began modding, and the image for in-game banners only tells me that I shouldn't edit the palette colours because they are referenced throughout the ROM, including the rink palette.

I thought it would be the same process as it was for recolouring the logos for each team, but it doesn't seem to work that way. Despite several attempts changing palette colours, changing the bitmap colours, and exhausting anything I knew would work, I have had no success in applying purple to the in game banner palette for my new team.

I've also read through the threads pertaining to this matter, but it seems I cannot find any success.

    Any insight is appreciated !

    Thanks in advance!

  7. Alright, I had success editing the match-ups without crashing.

    Here is where I stand:

    playoff_test.jpg

However, the more thinking I've done about this, the less likely I'm confident it will happen.

I'm assuming you can only control one team in playoff mode? There is no Demo option for the playoffs, so it may be impossible for this to work, since I'd have to be able to simulate each match-up from each series. Not a huge deal if it's not doable (can be done with exhibition games I guess), but I had to see how far I could stretch the ROM before running into a roadblock.

  8. Not that I know of. Since you are recording scores and statistics, won't this not work anyway since the game only tracks 1 team through the playoffs?

If you still want to use the bracket, then, since you only need 2 rounds of playoffs, what I think you can do is set the first 4 teams to all the same, next 4 teams all the same (but a different team that is supposed to play the first team in your first round), and so on. I think by the time it gets to the conference finals, you'll have the 4 different teams.

Other than your league being 4 teams and the game's bracket being 16, I don't see why you couldn't achieve any matchups you want.. depending on how yuo want to deal with the 16-team issue...

For the crash: Every team must, in at least one of the 32 sets of playoff starting brackets in the ROM, be the home team. What I do for my league ROM is, in the last few brackets, make sure any teams that isn't in the league is a home team at least once.

    Does any of this help?

This does help, thank you so much! I'm going to give some of what you said a try with a copy of our league ROM. I think there is some confusion on how the league works. It's a sim league (no one plays). Each player is a person on the message boards, and they are given ratings and boosts based on activity, articles written, graphics, helping sim games, etc).

I saw a mention of the game only tracking one team in the playoffs stats wise, thats alright. We track stats manually, through the end of game stats screens. We capture the goal/penalty summary, game stats, and player stats in screens and then copy them over to a master stats sheets.

I will report back as soon as I get a chance to fiddle around with some of this advice. Thanks again!

PS - Mr. Riss, nice to see you! Didn't know any TBNers were here besides Cole. I like the promotion for your expansion bid :P

  9. Hi guys.

Don't know if any of you remember my original posts about a sim league I was starting up last April. Well, it's taken a while, but we are now approaching the end of our 60 - game schedule, and I had some questions about playoff structure in NHL 94. I've read the related playoff threads around here, and I was just looking for a bit of clarity before I start messing about with things in NOSE.

(Just in case, this is not just for me and my own amusement - our league has really taken off, and I'm trying to make the playoffs as legitimate as I can: VIHL LEAGUE HOME)

    Anyways, my questions:

    1. We have a 5 team league this season, and 4 teams make the playoffs. Is it at all possible to have just the equivalent of the Conference Finals active in the playoffs? (Is there any way to bypass the first two rounds, since we only have 4 teams).

    2. Is it even possible to get the match-ups our league requires? I've read a lot about making sure every team has a spot in each round so the ROM doesn't crash at the team select. I know it wasn't fully fleshed out, but does anyone have any tips or dos/donts for me in terms of this?

I hope I haven't echoed threads that have already been published here, but I'm not as well versed with modding this game as some of you are.

    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!

    Eric

  10. Giving this a bump, in order to update our status.

We have been moving along nicely since my last post, as we have gotten through 27 regular season games, as well as a 10 game pre-season tournament. That puts us just short of the halfway mark of games for season 1 (27/60)

We have just started testing out the idea of uploading full games for players to watch, along with a highlights package that allows people who don't want to sit through the entire game to just catch the goals/penalties/key moments.

We are continuing to search for more sign-ups for season 2, as we look to expand to at least a 6th team.

The links to the league are in the above post, so check it out if you have some time!

Thanks again, if it wasn't for all of you guys - this league would never exist!

  11. Hey Guys,

I wasn't sure where to post something like this, so if it is in the wrong place, or not allowed, please feel free to remove this.

I wanted to extend an invitation to anyone interested in a NHL '94 sim league to join us in the VIHL. The VIHL is the Vintage Ice Hockey League, a league running off of a modded NHL 94. Most of the mods and the ROM itself are courtesy of members here at nhl94.com, and it has been a wonderful experience putting everything together.

We are currently entering our first season, having just recently completed our first annual preseason tournament. The league is hosted on the forums at thebreakaway.net. The league consists of 5 teams, mostly made up of members from the boards. Teams play 24 game seasons, with 6 matches against each of the other four teams (3 home/3 away).

Each team has their own team threads, with custom team sigs and banners being created by team members. The league is really about having some fun with a classic game that most people enjoyed. Not much is required from each player, just being active around the league/team forums is enough, as activity is one of our main focuses as we move forward.

The league will not be adding new players until the season 2 draft, but we are actively hoping to be able to expand and allow new members/players to put in bids for an expansion franchise (barring we have enough sign-ups to run an expansion draft after season 1).

I hope this doesn't come off as spam, but I just figured since I learned everything regarding ROM hacking here, I should extend an invitation to anyone interested.

The link to the league forum is HERE

The sign-up thread for season 2 can be found HERE.

Thanks for taking the time for reading this. Take a look around the forum and see if you like it. Don't join if you don't want to, I just wanted to spread the word, since the league is just taking it's first steps towards legitimacy at TBN.

NOTE: I do not claim to have created any of the ROM's or hacks, so all credit goes to wboy, nigel clark, and everyone else involved with things like the 30-team rom, weight bug fix, and tracking individual checks mod.

    Thanks again!

    Cheers,

    Eric (VIHL Commissioner)

  12. The checking line typically plays if you are winning in the 3rd period. It's really annoying when you start the 3rd up by a goal and your bum checking line hits the ice against against your opponent's ringers.

Maybe if you increase the period length, the checking line will get on more, since there will be time for the other 2 lines to get tired.

Thanks for that, I wasn't aware of what situations would draw the third line out.

I sim with 10 minute periods, mostly because it reflects fairly realistic stats, and if possible, I'd like to keep it at 10 minutes.

I guess what I'm really getting at is if anyone knows if the frequency of how much a certain line plays can be edited with a hex editor or some other form of editing?

  13. So I have been running some sims for my league the last few days, and I have noticed with cpu v cpu games, or games with auto line changes, the checking line doesn't seem to play.

Is there any way to make the chk line play? It's really frustrating, especially because people stuck on that line will not get much (or any) ice time unless they are on a PP/PK line.

I searched the forums quickly, but I couldn't find any definitive answers to my query.

Thanks for any advice you guys can offer.

  14. I apologize if this has been answered, but I have been struggling with what is the last piece of graphic conversion I have to do for my little project I'm working on.

I've successfully been able to edit the team selection screen logos, however, once I re-coloured them to the proper colours, they would show up as all pink on the next screen (the one with Ron Barr welcoming you to the game).

How would I go about correcting this? They look great on the team selection, but I'm not sure where I should be looking to fix the logo colours on the next screen.

Thank you in advance for any support you guys can offer!

  15. Thanks so much for the heads up on that process!

I've been working on them today, and I think I've got them under control. I got the NHL 94 fonts out of wboy's great tutorial package, and from there I was able to re-create banners almost identical to the original game.

Now I'm just working on the main menu banners and logos, thanks to you guys.

I appreciate all the support, you guys have been a great help so far :)

best way to do it, draw out a banner template in paint with the exact amount of pixels as your canvas, then chart out the banner. Leave a 2 Pixel border around a box for your text, then split that box into equal squares, each with a one pixel gap in-between. Then simply draw out the letters within the confines of each box. Better yet, copy and paste each letter from the original TM graphics, and create an alphabet you can copy and paste into each banner as needed. It's a long job, but it will certainly look smart.

    Have fun!

  16. Hey, I have been working on my mod for NHL 94, and thanks to this site I've gotten around a lot of issues.

However, there are a few things I am still stuck on. I've searched the forums for the answers, but I haven't found exactly what I'm looking for.

If my question has in fact been answered, I apologize for this thread.

Anyways, my question is: What is the best way to go about editing the start up banners for each team? I know you can change the colours using a hex editor, but I'm having trouble with actually importing new team banners into the game.

In TLP, I've found the offsets for the team banners that appear when you start a playoffs for example, but I'm still hunting for the banners that show up on the first team select screen. Does anyone know the offsets for those initial banners, and if so, is there a certain approach I should take in order to import my custom banners?

Thanks a lot guys, I appreciate any advice I can get.

Oh, and this is for the Genesis version of 94, if that information is helpful.

EDIT: I'm using the tutorial on the site for editing banner colours, so hopefully that gives me some answers - however I am running into problems with the shared tiles. How do you edit banners properly, without effecting the tiles that are shared between two or more teams?

  17. Hi everyone,

Name is Eric, and I'm new to these message boards.

I've come from thebreakaway.net, looking to gain as much info as I can on NHL 94 hacking. Another member there and I are planning on starting a fairly big, innovative sim league, and I am here to do research for for the aforementioned league :)

Looking forward to finding out more about the gem that is NHL 94 in the next little while.

    Cheers :)
