  1. Critics of Scotty Bowman's Mexico "training" session are back on it now that the Wings have lost a pair to the rival Maple Leafs. "Those were a couple of tough losses to a good team, but we played well," remarked Bowman. "I'd say that our vacation, I mean training session, had no affect on our play." Despite the two losses, goaltender Tim Cheveldae has manned the pipes quite capably since his return to the states. "The thing is," said Cheveldae, "after you've spent a few weeks drunk off your ass, when you finally stop drinking, everything seems so much clearer. I should have done that for my preseason workout years ago!" Lidstrom maintained his hot play with the lone goal in the first game, but a Borschevsky ram the goalie and let the puck slide into the net goal with under two minutes remaining sealed the first Leaf win. "I don't think Borscht did that on purpose, but it was a cheap goal nonetheless," stated 18th line center Jim Hiller. "He does that again, and we're gonna give him some Mexican water with his pregame meal," said Shawn Burr half-jokingly. Glenn Anderson had the Leafs up a mere 1-0 going into the third period of the second game, despite the Wings giving Toronto numerous power play and breakaway opportunities. "From the bench, it looked like we were doing a reproduction of the biblical story of the parting of the sea," Burr chimed. "But despite the heartache of two losses, I'm a big fan of Toronto's decision to use a sound byte of Hugo Weaving's quote of 'Hello Mr. Anderson' from the Matrix everytime Glenndog scores. That's classy as hell." Dino Ciccarelli plastered a slapshot past Felix the Cat to tie the game up early in the third. "Ciccy has a wicked shot," remarked Brad McCrimmon. "Oh and don't tell him I called him that." Yzerman then found Ciccarelli for a wide-angle one-timer to give the Red Wings their first lead. "We're looking great, like we're going to split with Toronto, and then with 13 seconds left, I think Jamie Macoun shouted 'Action'. And our defense thought it was time to do a final take of Moses parting the red sea. That's the only explanation for the lumbering (Dave Ellett) Elephant skating in unimpeded with five fricking seconds left, right?" commented Burr. In overtime, a quick goal with traffic in front of the Detroit net sent the Wings to their 8th straight loss to a divisional foe. "On the bright side, if going to Mexico is reward for winning, Scotty can't punish us any worse for losing than by making us stay home in Detroit," chortled Burr.
  2. Approximately a month ago, the Red Wings ran off a number of wins to get themselves back into playoff contention. As a reward for their improved play, coach Bowman took the team down to Mexico for a lengthy "training" session before the team returned to finish off the season. Many naysayers called for Bowman's head after the unorthodox move but early indications are that the hiatus is just what this team needed. The Wings thoroughly pummeled the Islanders for two periods before the Isles started to show signs of life in the third as Detroit downed New York 4-0. Stated Bowman, "People doubt me, but they shouldn't. My track record says back the f*#$ off!" "Even though those wins last month were good and important for us, we needed lots of cheap beer and good looking latina women to truly revitalize us," said the normally quiet Nicklas Lidstrom, who chipped in two of the team's four goals. When asked about what the "training" session involved, team veteran Mark Howe muttered "Well, we thought about hockey a couple times I think." "Why are you still asking my guys questions about their trip," said the unusually irate Coach Bowman, "these boys played like champs, outshooting those Islanders 13-2 through two periods. Did you not hear me when I said to back the f*#$ off? Do I need to spell it out for you in Mexican?" Goaltender Tim Cheveldae made a number of key saves in the third to preserve his second shutout of the season. "I felt really good last night, but I'd rather be in Mexico. Maybe if we rattle off a few more wins and clinch the 7th seed, we'll get another little reward trip," said Cheveldae. Vladimir Malakhov was called for a couple of early penalties that enabled the Wings to get a couple of first period power play goals. The Islanders were very agressive. "There's no truth to the rumor that we called Vladdy's mama a puta," quipped Shawn Burr. "He was just having a bad day, I think he and (Sergei) Feddie got together before the game for lunch and Feddie talked his ear off about his time spent with Anna Kournikova." "It's an ongoing thing, Feddie can't stop talking about her," chimed in 43rd line center Jim Hiller. "No truth to the rumor that we're going to use this as a new strategy either," winked Burr.
  3. Player has been added. We'll need to get him his password somehow. Mat can you send Evan this guy's e-mail? Or what else is the best way to get that to him?
  4. Player has been added, Evan will e-mail him his password and then he is good to go!
  5. Ummmm, when you call someone's suggestions ridiculous, it's safe to say that unless they know you real well they will likely assume you are being mean and "lashing out" at them.
  6. In response to the schedule question, the reason I made it that way is that in SNES, there are an odd number of teams in each conference. And when I was taking my template from the Gens league schedule, the easiest way to modify it so that each team had an even number of home and away games was to have there be a couple of teams play non-conference teams twice.
  7. WPG, from what I can see, the score has not been finalized. That means that when you go to the Log a Game page for those games, you can correct the scores when you log. And then hokkeefan will need to confirm your changes to the scores.
  8. Detroit continues to do its best Jekyll and Hyde imitation. In the first game, Calgary dominated the Wings 5-1 despite the Red Wings getting 3:50 in Power Play time. In fact, the Flames were so swarming on defense, that the Wings only goal, a slapper from Ciccarelli was also their only shot of the game! "We won't tolerate the allowance of Calgary using illegal magnetic sticks and a magnetic puck," said coach Bowman. "There's no way in a fair game we get outshot that bad unless the team we are playing is the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders in bikinis" If game one was Detroit doing Dr. Jekyll having taken a bunch of downers, game two was the Wings playing as Mr. Hyde showing his level of power. Detroit performed a complete turnaround as they shutdown and shutout the Flames 5-0. Steve Yzerman netted a pair and added a triple of assists. Ciccarelli also scored a pair and Kozlov closed out the scoring. Part of the team's fortunes were changed by the overaggressiveness of Calgary. "Joe (Nieuwendyk) was most aggressive," remarked eigth-string center Jim Hiller. Not to be outdone, resident team jokester Shawn Burr stated "well, we're conducting an experiment this season. Before this last loss we ate Moo Goo Gai Pan, slurpees and gnocchi. So scientifically we now can rule out these items as being good 'energy' food. Then we switched it up and just ate bananas and canteloupe before our shutout. Was a great energy food, but thankfully we didn't need any bench players cause we were all in the can after that pregame meal. That's the great thing about science though, it's always a work in progress."
  9. Coach Bowman's strategy of keeping the Wings locked up in their hotel to conserve energy for the game was a complete and utter disaster. Detroit, so thrilled to no longer be cooped up, skated around the ice like madman, completely undisciplined and out of character. Said captain Steve Yzerman "sitting around the hotel listening to Feddie (Sergei Fedorov) regale us of his dates with Anna Kournikova is enough to make anyone go crazy and need to take out some aggression". That was about the only thing the Red Wings could do, as they knocked out Brian Leetch and Esa Tikkanen. But a lucky goal when Coffey blocked out Cheveldae from making an easy save, followed by a quick second goal was all the Rangers would need. By the time Detroit started to come down to earth, they couldn't find the net as the Beezer made a few spectacular saves while standing on his head. "Looking back, it obviously wasn't a good call on my part. I won't let that happen again!" said Bowman. In an exhibition following the league game, the Wings looked much more at ease having already skated their excess energy out of their systems. The defense was on lockdown, and Steve Yzerman netted a pair followed by a Lidstrom breakaway goal as they returned the favor with a 4-0 shutout. "It's a shame", quipped comedic reserve Shawn Burr. "The first six and a half hours of Anna stories were alright, but those last five minutes just made us certifiably nuts"
  10. The Wings got their first victory of the season powered by a flu-ridden Steve Yzerman. The undisputed leader of Detroit carried the Wings on his weary back as he scored a season high 4 goals in the win. Overall the game was a see-saw battle with the score tied up on three different occasions. But with under 2 minutes to go, Yzerman, who was using an IV drip before the game and drinking fluids heavily between periods, notched the hat trick on a one-timer from RW Dallas Drake. Almost immediately afterwards, goalie Cheveldae almost blew the lead by making an errant pass in his own zone, that led to a half empty net opportunity for the Nords, but the flip of the puck towards the net went just wide. Stevie Y who was calm and collected despite the flu-bug and Quebec's repeated comeback attempts put the game on ice with 40 seconds to go, scoring his fourth and final goal. Drake had Detroit's first goal on a play of sheer determination where he took two point blank shots consecutively, then stripped the puck from Quebec's defender, took another point blank shot, and then finally scored on the rebound. Team representatives refuted the allegations by the press that the IV drip contained any illegal substances.
  11. i just wanted to remind everyone to please take your time and log games with the correct scores. i realize that the everyone is excited about the new season and that occasional errors occur, and i'm happy to help when needed. but i've had to make a number of corrections already, more than there should have been in my opinion. the reason the Log a Game feature is setup as it is, with each team having a chance to enter or confirm the score is to prevent the need for administrative intervention. that way i can spend more time improving the features this site provides! so keep having fun playing the games, but remember to take your time when entering or confirming the scores. thanks!
  12. No rush, so long as you can play the games there is no need to replace you. Some players are just a little anxious to play as you can probably tell.
  13. In response to the Home/Away thing, it would be nice to do, but an 80 game schedule is too much. People have other commitments, and as we saw last season, extending the length of the season caused things to really drag. This league is quite fun without playing Home/Away against every team. Plus you can always play an exhibition against the guys you only play against once. Not to mention since there are going to be 2 to 3 "seasons" per calendar year, you end up with 80+ games and Home/Away over that course of time. I agree with you on the playoffs. 16 of 18 teams in SNES and even 16 of 20 teams in GENS making playoffs is a bit much. That being said, the better teams will likely prevail in the playoffs anyway. And since this league is about having fun, I don't have a problem with more teams enjoying in the playoff excitement. Keep the suggestions coming though all. I liked the idea of Power Rankings someone submitted, and once I get done with the core site functionality, adding cool new things like Power Rankings will be next on my list!
  14. Schedules are almost done, and other little tweaks to the site are still in progress. The new season will probably be posted on Friday evening! Looks to be a great new season!
  15. Schwarz, since SNES is going to have a different number of teams than the GENS, can you let me know how you want to setup your Divisions for A and B? Or is Evan going to do that? I just need to know which divisions will have 5 teams, and which will have 4 and which teams are in each division, etc. For both A and B, since the teams used differ a little. Thanks!
  16. NYR advanced via forfeit in case you guys didn't get the e-mails about it. Hope you guys can get your games in tonight!!!
  17. Series results are posted, EDM comes back from 2-1 series deficit to take series in six. Round 2 is good to go!
  18. NEW IMPORTANT UPDATE...Evan passed along info to me stating that JotaC and bobeto have agreed to finish up their 1st round series tonight. So the Campbell round 2 series have been removed, as we are awaiting that first round outcome. Have fun, hope it's another good series!!!
  19. At last, the 1st round is complete. 2nd round matchups are now setup on the site, so keep the momentum going!
  20. This has been fixed. Not sure exactly what happened there, it might have been a bug but since I haven't been able to duplicate it, I'm just going to call it user error and leave it be unless someone else has similar problems

  22. The playoff page is ready for everyone to start logging your games. Logging a game works the same as for regular season games with the exception of being able to select multiple overtimes. If you notice any problems, make a post in the forum. Have fun with your playoff games!!!
  23. I've updated the Standings page to have a Division and Playoffs view. Check it out. I've been lacking sleep lately so if you notice anything wrong with it, shoot me an e-mail or post here, or let Evan know about it.
  24. Feel free to makeup the Forfeited games from the first 2 months of the season, if you can find Quebec or Washington online sometime. Hit me (GENS Vancouver) up for some exhibition games sometime too.
