  1. What about goalies attributes?

    GA

I felt that would be asking TOO much -- I wanted to keep the survey as simple as possible. Most players (including me) don't really look at individual goalie attributes and/or understand how they impact the goalie from a manual and auto perspective. You assume the higher rated goalie is best, and never really scroll through the attributes. The only thing I read about was Agility being key for auto goalie, and Speed and Weight being key for manual.

Anyhow, I'm also using average draft position from the GDL draft (seasons 6,7&8) to value goalies. It's a good indicator of what attributes (if any) are valued.

The draft data also will also correlate with this survey data...it'll make more sense when I post my analysis.

And thank you all who have already responded!

  2. why would anyone join A when they obviously can't even win a single playoff game against me? Perhaps I should sit this season out to let someone else enjoy the A title

Lol, definitely my vote for most obnoxious post of the year. You can always select a mid to low-tier team to give the rest of the world a chance.

  3. Why finish crappy in A when you could win it all in B?

I will learn a lot more losing in A than winning in B. My goal is to get better and there's only one way to do that. So I signed up for A (assuming acceptance).

I would do well in B (i.e. houly, hokkee, smoz, etc.), but would rather have the challenge of playing in A. No offense to the B leaguers!

  4. I know it's not quite on the topic, but, with SNES, a balanced weight is key (with unfixed Genesis versions, the light have a clear advantage).

with all versions, having a player who will crash the net is crucial (unless you are playing with friends on your team to do that for you) to the point that offensive awareness can't be ignored completely; I suggest having a crashing center and weakside winger.

I forget... is the checking rating not factored into manual checking ability at all?

In classic GENS ("unfixed"), the only factor in checking is weight. Smozoma's Blitz league uses weight (heavier = better) and checking to determine a checking factor, and uses weight as check resistance.

I haven't read anything where testing Offensive Awareness resulted in better CPU one-timer positioning or net crashing. It's always just assumed -- maybe I'm wrong. Personally, I never really pay attention to this rating. Not that's it's NOT important, but I value it so far less than other attributes that I never get down to that level. That's why I stress the word "value" over "importance" in my survey.

However, I have read, I believe from AILD, that in defensive awareness testing the players crowded towards the net more.

  6. I'm working on an analysis and need some help from you guys, particularly those who play online -- GDL, and Blitz would be best. How would you value player attributes from a scale from 1-5, where 5 is most valuable, and 1 is least? I'm hoping to get at least 10 responses. Your time is greatly appreciated and l will, of course, share my results afterwards. :)

I think of the scale this way (a guideline):

5 -- Very valuable. An attribute that I look for in a player every time.
4 -- Valuable. I look at this each time, but not quite as important as 5
3 -- If all else equal, I look at this attribute as a deciding factor.
2 -- A nice "to have", but will sacrifice for other attributes
1 -- Not important -- I rarely pay attention to this

A quick reference on attributes, as I understand them (thanks AILD and Smozoma):

Weight - Determines checking ability/resistance (lighter is better)and acceleration
Agility - How quickly a player stops and turns, deking ability
Speed - How quickly a player achieves top speed (acceleration)
    Shot Power - Self explanatory
    Shot Accuracy - Self explanatory
Stick Handling - Ability to receive pass, hold onto puck when poked/held
    Pass Accuracy - Self explanatory
Off Awareness - Thought to give AI better positioning for one-timers
Def Awareness - AI players close down to their own net
Checking - How often AI checks

You can copy/paste from my first response below. Again, I appreciate your feedback.

  7. I feel like the divisions would be redundant. One ladder, where you can challenge the 10 guys ahead of you is simple enough and self-dividing. Wouldn't divisions just be drawing lines in the ladder? The added work for creating and maintaining divisions doesn't seem to equal the benefit.

Then again, I'm no programmer...so maybe its easier than I imagine.

  8. Good idea.

I also have a set of stats based off me and a buddy playing with all the teams ~19 times each (we were going to do 25, to get all the matchups, but never ended up finishing the schedule):

Great stuff -- I like the idea of using actual game data to generate results. SOOOO, I took the results of the classic regular seasons (Spring'08 - Spring'11) and aggregated the data:

    Team	GP W L T Win %
    NYI 40 29 11 - 0.725
    CHI 491 340 151 - 0.692
    MTL 392 240 150 2 0.612
    DET 503 307 196 - 0.610
    BUF 486 281 204 1 0.578
    TB 98 54 43 1 0.551
    VAN 474 256 217 1 0.540
    BOS 333 178 155 - 0.535
    LA 394 209 183 2 0.530
    WSH 36 19 17 - 0.528
    DAL 412 217 193 2 0.527
    NYR 316 150 165 1 0.475
    CGY 472 223 247 2 0.472
    TOR 304 141 159 4 0.464
    EDM 107 47 60 - 0.439
    WPG 379 166 212 1 0.438
    OTW 32 14 18 - 0.438
    QUE 439 176 261 2 0.401
    NJ 68 25 43 - 0.368
    HFD 131 48 83 - 0.366
    PIT 312 112 200 - 0.359
    SJ 145 48 97 - 0.331
    STL 171 49 122 - 0.287
    PHI 253 71 181 1 0.281
    ANH 38 8 30 - 0.211
    FLA - - - - -

It's pretty obvious that the NYI are the best team in the league  . That was one season played by IceStorm, a top ranked A player (lost in semis to Carse's CAL). Not surprisingly, the expected teams are on top (CHI, MTL, DET, BUF). Smoz, looks like Buffalo is just not for you :D. TB has two seasons, played by AngryJay and Zalex. I like TB a lot too, and would have expected them to be higher than their rankings suggest.

Also interesting to note is CAL. I personally never do well with them, even though they are one of the better teams in the league, but I'm surprised they have a losing record. I guess it's just not me who doesn't do well with them.

  9. Based on the "Building Lines with AJ" rankings, I took AJ's ratings for forwards, defensemen, and goalies [i filled in QUE (6.5) and WSH (3.0) goalies as the write-ups are not complete], weighed them 3,2,1, respectively, and spit out this result. Just for fun:

    CHI 9.00

    DET 8.75

    BUF 8.25

    MTL 7.67

    CGY 7.67

    VAN 7.42

    TOR 7.42

    BOS 7.33

    DAL 7.25

    WPG 6.92

    QUE 6.75

    EDM 6.42

    LA 6.33

    NYR 6.08

    PHI 6.00

    HFD 5.50

    PIT 5.42

    WSH 5.17

    STL 5.17

    NJ 5.00

    NYI 4.75

    SJ 3.58

    TB 3.08

    FLA 3.00

    OTW 1.75

    ANH 1.33

  10. ya I like the idea of being rewarded based on the team you use as well.. maybe if we ranked the teams in order of best to worst, with some teams being given the same rating if they are viewed as equal.. then factor that into the formula?

Good idea -- as an aside, it would be great to get a bunch of people to rank the teams (or top 15) and compile that data to see what the consensus says. Has this been done in the past? If not, I may do this...

  11. This, of course, would be great (along with updating the main page on the site). A paging system would be cool too. For example, instead of looking at my next 10 potential opponents and hoping I catch them online, I can click on their name and send a "request to play" or something, with some proposed times. I'll also be able to see received requests. This can also be used to monitor activity -- no responses to requests lower your ranking, etc.

  12. I'm throwing out a suggestion that I'm sure has been made before -- can we get a dedicated section in the forums for posting links to/embedding NHL'94 videos? There's a bunch of stuff out there on YouTube, as well as the GDL site itself I found, but it's not well-organized. I think having this section would provide a lot of value to the community without much trouble.

This would be for videos solely depicting the NHL'94 game. Something like:

    Videos

    GENS

    - Full Games

    * Classic

    * GDL

    - Season 5

    * Blitz

    - Season 6

    "A" Semi-Finals

    "B" Finals

    - Season 5

    "A" Finals

    * Other

    - Compilations

    - Single Highlight

    - Tutorial

    Something like that.

  13. Congrats to Carse (again) -- arguably the most dominant player in '94 right now. I believe you lost ONE game since taking over? Sick. The bar is set pretty damn high right now...a great inspiration for a lot of us to learn, practice and get better. Can't wait to see the vids!
