  1. I think we may have been talking to Ice, but it may have been ogling the waitresses...
  2. Speed skills- NYR I already regret not taking LA and Gretzky.
  3. It is a balancing issue. Games played today are updated multiple times a year, therefore the teams change, therefore the game changes. This game is static. It isn't an apples to apples comparison when there are midyear balancing and roster changes in Madden!
  4. Plabax, I think in this case you might have clung to an idea too tightly. The stats say the coin toss determined little as the percentages came out to ~50%. If we were to do what you said, my guess is the home/away advantage becomes more pronounced meaning there is more luck involved. Two equal players, playing against each other with their best teams, the home away advantage will really help one over the other. The fact the coin toss stats came out as good implies this is a fair test. Again, this is a balancing question and a format designed to produce a fair results. It appears it did, AS WELL it got a good turnout and was a fun way to play. I would be less likely to attend a tournament where everyone picks their team. That was how people played fighting games, but not really how games like this were played again because the teams are intentionally unbalanced to reflect real life. If I wanted to bet on games on NHL94 with you, this would be a good way to do it. We would do random teams when I was in college, with one rejection. This is much better than that. Someone smart said this, you can't trust yourself, you can't trust your mother, you can't trust you friends, but you can trust a market. This tournament successfully attracted enough people to come to it. If they did what you are suggesting I doubt it would have been as popular, but as I said, I can't trust myself either.
  5. First, Hawerchuk is the guy. If you want to pull Dale, Errey is not the guy to put in. I just did the stats for the coin toss. It came out that the coin toss winner won 53.7% of 190 times we have recorded all the information. That puts 50% in the confidence interval so we can't say that the method was anything other than fair. It still might be unfair, but it can't be deduced from our results and appears unlikely. I know some people picked some ridiculous matchups. I believe a SJ v Chicago was out there for KG. So there is a chance this would be different with more advanced players. The finals bracket produced a 48.78% chance the coin toss winner won, but obviously a smaller sample size. Nonetheless, I think these are good results. Even in there is some luck involved, there is luck involved in the game as well ie Klima going down when you are playing with Edmonton. the stats point to be the method being great.
  6. similarly you can pick the great teams who have strong home advantage without any hesitation.
  7. I thought about this for a while, and I would rather generally have home ice than pick the teams. That being said, I think the coin flip was a great comprimize and think giving home ice advantage and pick of the two teams is TOO big an advantage. Now how could you change it and make it a bit more fair? The option of choosing sides. Basically instead of choosing teams, you choose a side. So I could elect home ice instead of picking the two teams. In football, there are are generally three options. Kick, Receive and Defer. I am not suggesting we add defer, which means you get the opposite on the next coin flip, but rather a more direct comparison would be choosing to Kick. So if I play the other opponent again I would not suddenly get to pick the teams, but rather he would have the option of "choosing sides", or "choosing teams." AJ brought this up when he joked can I defer to me in our first game, and I thought about it long and hard and this was the best solution I could come up with. It is a minor tweak. I liked the format but very much preferred being home and getting my pick of two teams than being away and picking the matchup. That being said, against Raph, I would have rather picked the teams as I thought about what plays into my style more than his. Also, see all my other critiques about the format. They all remain valid. I had a great time thanks all. My suggestion has always been a next up, so maybe put a light or something that would show an available station and have a monitor going with the next match up, then dispatch them to the open station. You have to be there when the station becomes available. This would maximize console usage time. It might be more logistically challenging, but I think it would make everyone be engaged and put more emphasis on quick turnover of games.
  8. Format can be criticized. See my original posts re time. First, lots of dead time. Best of 3 series could reduce dead time significantly by first, having someone sit in a seat for a longer period of time, and second giving the other competitors more to get ready for. Also a best of three would probably take on average something like 25 minutes since most will be 2-0 sweeps. Yes that means the schedule has to be done with less specificity, such as you have to be ready to play next, but if anything the lack of urgency on the schedule lead to more downtime. While my other two losses can't be blamed on format as they were close games, my loss against Raph involved the worst luck one can come across 94. Klima going out for the game half way through the first period! Yes I could have not spit it up against AJ and then rematched Raph... I won't forget that loss anytime soon. My problem with the format was not that it is a bad format for producing a champion it is that I found it inefficient for getting maximum play in, and thus fun. I don't think anyone can say that the systems were used near enough to maximize playing time. Nonetheless, it was I only used a pass shot once the entire tournament. (game winner v AJ with my man Housley!) The only 'trick' I think you need to have some idea of how c checking works to be really competitive. Sometimes a pass shot is the best chance you have, but for me that is generally a result of knowing a check is going to work so I have to get rid of the puck.
