  1. League idea is nice, it's a great idea to implement ELO type of thing to it etc. I just think it might have a low interest at the very moment due to GDL running so long without breaks etc. J&J was also planning on a weight bug fixed league and got 6 players signing up for that, it might be a good idea to collaborate with him since there might be shared interests. Another league that is kicking up is in a totally different direction by Plabax, which offers a test of minimizing the variance of luck in the game. There has been so far 11 or 12 players signing up for that, so overall interest in new leagues has been low, but I think there's some call for a smaller leagues for some time now. Next Classic starts somewhere around february/march and GDL who knows, propably somewhere around that time table too. It does let many players rest and gather their interest again towards the game by not having the sensation of being forced to play due to overcommitments (propably not really overcommitment, but just having the sensation of commitment for so long). This is my speculation of the overall situation of the site as of late. Offsides make the game slower, it encourages the importance of passing in my mind. Slow passes to fast players going for breakaways tend to result in offsides. Line changes would also slow the game down a bit as endurance comes in to play. This is the setup we used in Finnish leagues 01-07. The game is the same, but it's a quite different approach from arcade to a more chess type of gaming. I like both. I just wanted to write this because I think the idea for the league is good but it's a rough timing right now, so if there are not much participants it's not the idea behind the league or any specific player running it. If J&J is still planning on his league, maybe approaching him with this could be a good idea, just my two cents.
  2. This sucks very much. Most dominant regular season ever by AJ should not go down like this. I can see this from both sides. Leagues are extremely slow paced at the moment and extensions have been plenty. It's taking a toll on the more active players and Plabax is blowing out his frustration. He is one of the top coaches, a very active one and very often right, but does have the lack of soft skills and be very direct and bring out the elephants in the room even to the extent of mind games, this is a terminology from call centers on your maners towards customers etc. When you're available most of the time and you have to play to the schedules of the other, it feels like you're the only one adjusting and giving in to the other and league backs the "slacker" up. AJ just wants to play the game and is in a scenario where you take in to account many things when it's possible, when to bug your friend and when you're able to. The latter is propably more often but you don't wanna play too tired etc, which affect the first two a lot. Sometimes you just don't want put up to negativities in your life and rather just not deal with them, when it's not really part of something necessary in your life. I hope AJ takes another look at this, so Brutus can revoke the forfeit, there still is time for the original deadline right?
  3. Add an option to upload krec to the game so everyone can download it from the game info page. Sometimes you play 2 in a row for the same krec, just upload it twice for each. Be able to comment the game maybe on page then. You can link tube or twitch or anything to comments as well. Anything to move stuff as much away from message boards.
  4. I agree, it is hard to keep interest in leagues where it could be a week or weeks without getting any games. Smaller leagues for active people during long huge main event leagues is propably the fix for those willing, plabax league for 8-14 people sounds perfect and the idea is exciting to me behind it and the pace of it. For main event leagues we have classic 2x per calendar year and gdl when there is a call for it, I feel like gdl has run nonstop for a year or over now. It wasn't long ago when classic was much smaller, change pretty much happened around ko94. It wasn't long ago when gdl was once or 1,5 times per calendar year, to compensate what's up now there sure was Blitz. People take time off from the game, sometimes for years, I've done it a couple of times. I have played under emotional depravation towards it and it is intoxicating to others as well. Taking some time off is ok, do not feel forced to play, but not during leagues. It is true that leagues are maybe a bit too supportive towards top players slack with extensions etc. Be strict, it's the same for everyone. Smaller one conference leagues are cool. Fact is hockey is a small market game in the world compared to many others and to add there a retro video game about it, the number of players might not be too big to have big leagues constantly with great interest. We could improve marketing with a few things, but that is for another thread.
  5. This is propably a tough time to kick up two leagues not named GDL or Classic. There's been back to back to back GDL:s running up that has created some inflation on interest by over abundance of games. And now between the next Classic and GDL propably in 3-4 months, Plabax is kicking up something new in a competitive spirit for the game and then this in the spirit of Blitz. The truth is I would like to support new leagues, but cannot commit to 2 now. I feel like I'm obligated to support the competitive tryout so we have something to compare to as we've had talks of static and even the no penalties setup quite some. Smaller leagues are quite fine though and great fun with active people showing interest to them. In Finnish leagues we usually were limited to 8-14 people and it was great. Leagues were shorter than the months lasting here, but way more active to keep interest.
  6. Playing on browser can be done locally, you just need to have the proper controller setup, so two people can go on. There is like nhl95 on sega in http://www.ssega.com/play/nhl-95/1179. Some sites you can play old PC games via Dosbox so if you'd have a gens emu running like them, you could even change the setup via mouse then. It's just open for abuse if left like that. There also comes the problem for latency in transatlantic connections. Euro players are few, but it would be restrictive for growth on that side if the server would be in NA or vice verse for example. Question arises if it would be possible to have 2 browsers play the same game via p2p? On a rapid thought it is quite hard to perform, but you could have for example a static NA server on eastcode and a static EU server on west coast that you connect to and have the gens emu run from there and connect to the already known IP:s as P2P. That would also basically fix some inconsistency problems as well and if either ones ISP is lagging, it would be only on that one side as the problem is between ISP to server, the actual P2P between games would be fine in general. The abuse problems could be overcome that the games are accessible via login only, which would narrow it down and be able to see from logs which users could be abusing the system like shutting down the game.
  7. One thing I have always wanted to do is to adjust team strenghts to your likings. It can be maxed out or not maxed out. I'm especially interested in testing a not maxed out offence with maxed out defence as I tend to like those teams in Classic as well. How will these be determinated? Adjusting themselves would be equal as everyone can max out if they want. This would also propably give us hints are there really differences and do they affect the game. The only thing with possibly different team strenghts is that it could possibly affect the outcome if someone figures out something or then it's just playing to your strenghts. How will advantages be? For as little effect as possible, I think home 0 and visiting 0 is the way. Have the lowest possible advantage at home and next to nothing at visiting team.
  8. I will take Florida, I must support this as the settings promote competitive gaming and reduce randomness, I think such a league must be experienced at least to have something to compare to. I have never been promoting no penalties much, but 5on5 hockey with no skewed games due penalties is intriquing, even though they would in the long run be even. Static is what I've always wanted to experience in a league.
  9. I'm under the presumption that it's like this. When you do a onetimer it does never counts as a pass. If you score 3/7 in onetimer stat, you have made 3 onetimers out of the 7 succesfull onetimer attempts. So in short, these 7 onetimers are always succesfull passes, but are not shown in the pass stat. As an example, from the game Cgy-Dal http://nhl94online.com/html/box_score.php?gameid=28308. Passing for Seth is 26/41 -> 63%, but it should be 30/45 -> 67% Passing for me is 23/45 -> 51%, but it should be 30/52 -> 58%
  10. I did not put Tex originally at A in my mind when I was going in my head who would be making A this season. I had 12 players in mind. Those who run Classic decided to go with 14 and all those willing to move from B to A got the chance, usually it has been that the winner of B gets the chance outside of lack of participants. Tex has played with Buffalo, a team with chemistry problems for me at least and has got more wins than I expected, so during the 10 months of my absence from the game he has improved. Buffalo player attributes are something that can take over the games but I personally don't like them due to wacky chemistry so I am totally surprised by the wins he has already amassed. He does seem to be something between A & B it seems and would've been one of the top B players to begin with. Dallas is a team that has some learning curve, but it can be one of the top teams in the game due to it's speed. Had he to begin with have stayed in B who knows where he would had picked anyways. If we look at the team drafting history in A it's around top ten. Here are the last 5 drafts from A for Dallas. Fall 2016: #11 by Depch Spring 2016: Not picked (10 participants) Fall 2015: #9 by Zalex Spring 2015: #10 by Swos Fall 2014: #7 by JackAndJose I have been toying with the thought of volunteering to play with Anaheim in B myself if it's possible to change teams there and replacements are needed to up the games. I guess it should be possible by doing it manually at least to the database, but is it too much of a work? And mainly what would the others think of such move, especially the B-leaguers. Tex especially deserves the chance to prove himself as a contender for B title.
  11. Port forwarding would be ideal, but there are always some that can't do it for some reason, so hamachi is a must, but one can dream. I've got an old laptop I'm using. HP Elitebook 6930p, which is c2d 2,4ghz 4gb ram. It came with Vista and I've been through all 3 Windows version from XP, Vista to 7 with it. I just needed Windows for some games and after running to a weird problem with 7 I decided to stick to XP for Gens & NHL94 purely. After playing with Wine with netplaysave or rerecording there is no difference in responsiviness to keyboard at least to any Windows OS and I did play 3 online games yesterday vs JV. FPS is stable and high, but with JV we always have a jumpy connection so there are occasional drops, but it's been completely fine. Now I just have to solve the black screen issue on online gens, it should not be a big issue as it's been proven to work already. I'm running Linux mint 18, which I installed just a couple of days ago. [edit] And the black screen issue seems to be linked to the rom itself as nhl94playoffs.bin works online now. This has propably got something to do with the .srm files and me testing it out on multiple emulators. Plus more on the FPS now that I'm looking at it more closely. FPS with rerecording default settings seems to be around 50is, so it's not maxed out on 60. But have to remember that this is an old unit of like 8 years old, even though higher end at that time. A newer unit even by 3-4 years might do better and desktops most likely. I usually run Gens without sound and when I have sound off the FPS is stable 60 with Wine too, so this is like running Gens under Windows for me as is the control responsiviness.
  12. I was under the assumption that it's almost impossible to get hamachi work under Linux. This has propably been the case at some point, but it seems to work completely fine now. #1 Download Hamachi from http://www.vpn.net/linux #2 Use the help here to install haguichi, so you have graphical user interface for hamachi, I'd say this is a must unless you are experienced with terminal https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Hamachi #3 Use Wine to run EmuCR_Gens-rr_r352.tar.gz. That is a Gens version provided by Smozoma when I inquiried regarding some problems on general gens-netplaysave.exe and it looked like pink mushrooms, see screenshot below. Gens rerecording works perfectly for me at least. #4 I added the new kaillera to the tar.gz file above. There is the latest server supporting kaillera file as well, you just need to rename the kailleraclient.dll-server to kailleraclient.dll and obviously rename the current one for example to kailleraclient.dll-new before that if you want to play on a server. It has the recorder plugin as well so you can record games in new kaillera. Adjusted some settings for smoothness on my poor laptop and played against JV via Hamachi and new kaillera and works completely fine in Linux. I'm still saving XP for dual boot just in case, but this eases stuff out a lot. Wboy already provided the help to run Nose in Linux as well the other day so looks like Linux users are pretty much set to go as well. Gens-netplaysave Gens-rerecording [edit] Worked yesterday, but today I'm getting a black screen on game connect online. It's a familiar problem from Windows at some times, but can't recall the fix. Maybe there is something other that needs to be done still as well.
  13. People outside the US might experience problems. The website aim.com might not let you in and says it's geoblocked, but there is a way to use the direct link aim.com/popup/ to avoid that, but for many people who knows to do that, especially new ones. I couldn't use the android app either from Finland or Poland for the very same reasons. PC application works fine and that weird popup link directly. Change is hard for people! I'm leaving discord on for most of the time I've got my computer on (most of the time), but will check out AIM especifically when I'm looking for games. ++ I also experienced that messages were not updating problem at one point, but don't recall the fix nor was it the desktop app or popup link. It's good now.

    nose on linux?

Oh wow, thank you for this very thorough guide. This came just on time for me as well as I just installed Linux mint 18 for basic use on my old laptop and run Windows XP for Gens then. Much appreciated, now I just need to boot whenever I'm just going to play.
  15. Smoothing adds extra frames to balance out jitter / bad internet connections with jumpy ping, good connections don't need it. More the frames the worse it is in case of response time to controls and that can handicap reactive players in compared to more of a simple efficient style. Smoothing 1 should be ok in general, but more is questionable and reserved for real bad connections. The longer the distance does not equal to having an unstable connection.
  16. Account is easy to make, you just need the ID:s to add others and invitation to join a "server", which presumably works as the chat channel then. Tag: Depch #4041
  17. Is there a way to check do body checks affect the possible momentum we have speculated. There was a hint about the gaming having it in one of the McMikey threads, this was about when McMikey said that Plabax might have a different experience than some others. I do after whistle checks quite some, but some are very very active on that. I am curious to know would it have any effect. Not a hack idea, but it's related close enough to the previous subject imo.
  18. Yes, this is true. You need to see/feel it. A hot 3 and cold 4 are pretty much interchangeable and those skill are the most plenty. Speed is something you can feel it from and sometimes accuracy can be way off as well. For 4 stickhandlers it's easy to see if they're hot when they wobble against poorly executed checks and pokes/trips, that starts to happen at 80. Skill 4 on shotpower should be something you can tell as well as skill 4 has the range from 63 to 80 and in the 60's you can see the difference to high 70's. Skill 5 has the scale on 81-98 but any skill on 5 is good already, but effects can be seen/felt in skating, I think a cold Ronning would not be a 1st round pick when being hot or just "normal" he is.
  19. C64 Hat trick was one of my favourites. Excellent 1on1 hockey action with goalies. Really addictive and genious in simplicity. Wasted many hours on that before games like nhl hockey and nhl95 onwards on PC.
  20. Can you confirm is this the A league for the upcoming season or is Dcicon willingly staying in B (recall past issues with this even though he belongs to A?) and who would take his place if so or is someone else cut down as well then? A: Brutus, Hokkeefan, Kingraph, FPB, Zeppelin, Dcicon, Donnybrook, Icestorm, Habs, Angryjay, Depch, Plabax ? Will be interesting to see the draft order and eventual teams.
  21. I'll join, able to get in games after the first week of october.
  22. And they are nothing new, or well cb was new to me but perhaps someone has been perceptive enough in the 90's already to have figured it out in some community. Fact is that pass shots existed in 94 already and that there is no ultimate right way to play the game and just that players x were not aware of stuff y back in the days does not give them that allowance either to say how the game should be played in a community. This being said I can understand how some might feel about them. In some of the newer nhl games there existed glitch goals that required very little skill, just a tap and correct position and we had online leagues where some of them were banned, simply because they were so easy to execute that games would turn to spamfests with those goals. This however is not the case with these tricks in nhl'94, there is a skill level in pass shots and unless you have a free ride to goal you can't spam them either constantly, also cb just makes sense to give a fix to an original bug in the game.
  23. Make it easier for new guys to mesh to the community. Using aim, which does work but as a platform is very oldschool is not good. This will cut off maybe 1/2 of people to turn away, making it that much harder for them to connect. It's not technically hard, but very few will take the effort to install an outdated msg system. Also not many will start at a message board unless being real enthusiasts. Something easy to connect what majority are using already and allows instant messaging and group chats, when and if they like the games they will take the effort to register on boards as well, perhaps. AIM mobile does not work from Finland and seems to be geoblocked to get to chat. I think this was the case from Poland as well. It's a message that is indirectly involved to the subject. I like bigger leagues myself, but 6 player leagues are fine and not taking anything away from me. As a sidenote I would love to play in classic, but still missing a computer and ditched out from Poland, so back in Finland. Have to see if I could play from any of my friends.
  24. What is not so well known on def awareness is that high def awa allows you to steal pucks by shadowing a player close and not even pressing anything.
