  1. I know why... Had to travel to California to get the answer. All I will say is Premium you are right but you are asking the wrong question.

    Sorry about trolling lol

I don't think this topic has enough meat to make it into the final film. But i'll do my best to have an un-cut interview in the itunes extras that covers a lot of these little tweaks that make this game so good and keeps us talking about almost 25 years later.

    Mikey you're the man!

What you got to say now Ice & AJ? Oooooooh!

  2. No, this is not what I'm talking about, maybe you've forgotten the game where I especially approached you about the sluggishness you had, because it was so visible even to the opponent. This would be controversial to my home records in classic as well where you can't check the true values since they are masked (and remember my teams have had advantage 2 at home, it should affect the awarenesses at least as well), but this one game I was talking about was in gdl exi I think.

I do remember that game. But I can't recall if it was classic or GDL. All I know is the games some of my guys are sluggish (in GDL), is when they are ice cold. And I've never had that happen why my players were only mildly cold, average, or hot. This observation of mine spans the entire period of time since GDL went to transparent ratings, and includes the thousands of exis I've played.

  3. As for my own record I have had the hunch/feel that my home games feel "heavier" to play with and have experienced more sluggish games there. Seth knows what I am talking about when I once noticed his players skating on a porridge (opponent can basically skate around you then, but that bad stuff only happens against some players, but there are games where the connection/controls are not equal while more rare). So my record can somewhat be explained with that maybe? But I have always enjoyed playing down more than up as well.

Hot & Cold is the main culprit. In GDL, I know all my players' avg ratings, check them before every game, religiously. When players are very cold and you have several of them out there, their agility and speed are severely affected and noticeable. Especially when you're talking about guys in the 4 rating range and lower, the drop-off in ability is even greater, but so is the boost they get when they're red hot. I would know, I'm known for my love affair of of non-elite players in the average range. But it's a love-hate relationship. When they're very cold, their skate takes a big nosedive. Also remember, agility and speed are closely related so when they BOTH take a hit, you get the sluggish, skating-in-sand effect. I have no tolerance for it. If a guy is really cold, he isn't seeing the ice under for me. Those who don't notice these effects are simply not very perceptive enough/oblivious. Or their playing style of skating it primarily with their superstar means they just aren't paying attention to what their other guys are playing like....because those other skaters don't have the puck.

Smoz has showed that the home boost increases shot accuracy in classic. I don't notice any difference in performance in home/away in GDL in regards to skating though.

If you think guys are sluggish in a given game, check their ratings and compare it to their average ratings. You'll see it's no mystery why they feel like they're wearing cement boots.

  4. Top speed they are the same, but they definitely move differently agility-wise. The 7/5/5 setup of Klima/Gartner skate better than Geoff/Modano. 7/5/4 combo of Oates skates better than Fedorov. 7/4/4 of Sundin/Falloon>Larmer/Roberts. Same thing for the 6/4/4 of Davydov/Amonte skating better than Sakic/Sanderson/Reichel. And so on. Righties simply move better in terms of turning and quick directional changes. A straight line race would not show this IMO.

  5. The biggest argument for/against penalties and them being random is that it effects the outcomes of the games. ON THAT FRONT, the stats are NOT showing this. I'm seeing it average out to 70 to 75 chances for an advantage and 70 to 75 chances of being disadvantaged.

It DEFINITELY effects outcomes of games, for everyone. We're not arguing that some guys get screwed much more than others or that over time it doesn't even out. We've all won games because the other guy has gotten completely screwed over by refs and also lost them for the same reason. It happens all the time. These AI penalties committed by the computer are the ones myself, Plab, TK and Co. cannot stomach. And how OFTEN they occur.

Computer committed penalties are at least 50% of infractions, probably more like 75%. Sure, better skaters and more aggressive/checking players get more on AI. But it happens all the time that guys who don't fit that description take AI penalties. Those are random slot machine games. I'd much rather see all games decided mostly by skill than everyone get a share of freebie wins and losses. To reiterate, yes long term it evens out, but in the short term AI penalties f*ck one coach over while awarding the other with a massive advantage. That is luck-based/randomness and turns 94 into a joke at times.

  6. You can't control whether or not you get PIMs, so is it not random? If penalties were NOT random there would be a way to never get them. The computer committing a penalty is random. You can't control whether a computer commits a penalty or not, it just happens.

Stats show that penalties are not player-specific, so it's not a "roster" decision. Many others have had Svoboda and gotten considerably less PIMs despite playing many more games and getting more body checks.

You guys can keep coming with the "it's not truly random" argument, but why would you classify it as something else? Maybe getting a PLAYER-committed penalty is not truly random, but it pretty much is for AI-committed penalties. You can avoid getting a penalty as a player but you can't avoid getting them from the CPU.

Better way of putting it.. you can never touch the controller/keyboard but commit penalties regardless. Whether or not playing style factors into it is irrelevant because coaches are still affected by randomness.

    Agree 100%.

Why is this so hard for people to notice or admit? Puzzling.

  7. It is in poor form to stall like you describe. There is an etiquette thread that says this somewhere. Flipping puck is fine, but staying in your own zone and stalling is crap. The way the game is programmed it is hard to stop someone wasting time in their defensively zone.

This is Pandora's Box, my friend. You do this and weak players may consider stalling THE ENTIRE GAME hoping to win 1 0 on a single counter attack, or even play for a (soccer style) 0-0 tie!

I believe the etiquette refers to deliberately stalling in your own end towards the end of the game, and/or at even strength with a lead.

The way the game is programmed, it's also hard to kill penalties without resorting to time-stalling. The way the game is programmed, it's difficult to possess in the offensive zone on the PK and find an open man in a scoring area. That's why an overwhelming majority of shorthanded goals are unassisted. The game is programmed so on the PK, (on AI) your offensive players will not tread into the prime scoring real estate. Your teammates are literally on a different agenda, by design. So I'm going to start listening to them by doing what they want, which is to worry about getting rid of the pim first (at any cost), and scoring 2nd.

It's difficult to avoid taking penalties unless you play an extremely passive style of D. It's difficult to swallow the fact that the a large % of penalties are taken by AI, random luck. It's complete lunacy to have guys in the box all game long, or multiple guys as often as it occurs. In real hockey, the goal is to kill the penalty, in any way possible. I'm just adopting that approach now.

I do draw the line at stalling during even strength though, at least for me personally. If someone wants to stall an entire game, I'm sure they will get assaulted in the AIM chat and have to answer for it. I don't think it opens Pandora's box though. I wanted to announce my change of plans so no one is caught by surprise. And I know there are many more people who despise PIMS but are hesitant to speak up about it publicly for whatever reason. They too think it's an absolute joke sometimes.

  8. I don't like the "PIMS are part of the game" argument. PIMS are IN the game, but they are not "part" of the game. We just happen to play with them. It's like how we don't play with line changes or offside. Aren't they part of the game too? In reality penalties are just something random that comes up. You can't commit a penalty intentionally. Some games you get no penalties, but others you can play the exact same way and get eight. Sometimes even regular defensive plays are called as penalties. Avoiding penalties should be a skill but you can't practice such a thing in NHL '94.

Penalties are supposed to penalize unfair play, but penalties almost never penalize any sort of dirty playing in NHL '94. There are penalties in the game like slashing but there is no command to slash. There are hooking penalties in the game but even hooking exclusively doesn't give hooking penalties. Same thing with tripping. Probably less than 5% of my trips are called as tripping penalties.

The problem with this to me is that goals are much easier to score on the power play. I feel like the game is rewarding a player with a high chance at scoring for something that was completely random. Not only that, but the power plays are far too long. It may as well be a free goal with how often power plays are successful. The power plays are 4x longer than their real life counterparts and thus go in at a much higher rate. It's the equivalent of an eight minute power play for a minor penalty in real life.

    Penalties also stall the game.

I do convert at a very high rate on power plays, but I would rather not have them.

    nailed it

  9. yes playing on plabaxs pim-free b-check fixed rom was a real joy. The game had so much more flow to it, and it made the game more skill based, but more importantly less random.

Come on guys penalties are no fun, and can really screw someone over in a hard fought game 7

    - sure wasn't fun at KO94 trying to mount a comeback against you in our elimination game and getting like 5 pims in the 3rd period.

  10. So, my favorite moment is when Ray Bourque comes OUT of the box (where he is often it seems), and is NOW on the RW.

I become truly OBSESSED with scoring with him to the point where I generally start to play bad trying to stop the puck from becoming frozen and the team lines reset.

HOWEVER, GDL would not be that league.

hahah, that's been the word around town for a long time, that you get a Bork-boner.

    we neeeeeed a new league

  11. haha ANALYTICS! Seth performs better SH than at EV!!!!!! Give it up clown you've been exposed!

LOL, good research boys. Of course I love scoring on the PK and it's extremely hard to resist trying to. I guess I can have my cake and eat it too, by wasting the s**t out of the clock and still making a rush if opportunity presents itself. We'll see.

  12. You sir are a clown. You scored the 2nd most pk goals last season in classic with 27.

On a serious note, do what you want on the pk. I don't demand people play a certain way so don't feel bad if you use that technique with me.

Meanwhile I will continue to attack on the pk. Generally over a season I will score close to the same amount on the pk as my opponent on the pp.I'll take my chances with that.

I admit, I didn't look at my own stats here. It's still just extremely frustrating to be in the box all the time. And I will always think it's stupid to penalize one of the best aspects of hockey.......hitting. It's just such an important tool and excellent-timed/placed checks shouldn't be penalized SOOO much as it is in 94. I think dropping it down from 2min to 1min would ease a lot of the frustration.

Yes you should be rewarded for playing position, but a lot of us play position yet play aggressive too and hit when the time is right ....but still get penalized for it. Just going out of one's way to make a hit is risky in and of itself, a built in negative of being aggressive. I think pims are way overboard in occurrence and time spent in the box.

  13. I've had it with these refs. They are ridiculous. Most of them have brooms up their asses. Penalties for 2 minutes are too long when periods are 5 minutes each. It's unjust I tell you. We've all been the victim of games where the refs just ruin it for us, or the other team. Hitting is a great defensive tactic that oftentimes will not result in penalties, or result in an insane amount of them with guys piling up in the box. But whether you believe penalties are random (aka reality) or intentional (aka fantasy), there is no denying that even the best PK coaches get scored on 35-40% of the time when the other coach has the PP. Not only that, but even when one tries to score on a PK, it is difficult because players in AI mode do not set up in an offensive way. For years, we've had to keep penalties in the leagues because B-check is weakened if we took them out. Then Plabax hacked it to make it so you can remove penalties and have no ill effects on the B-check. Still, penalties are ever-present.

So what's this post all about you ask? We'll, I've always tried to score on the PK. And felt it was cheap/cheesy to waste time in my own end on the PK. However, I've reached my breaking point. I can no longer sit idle and allow this absurd reality to continue without taking action. So I'm here to announce an official revolt against penalties. From this point on, I will be doing whatever is necessary drain sand out of the hourglass (when shorthanded). That includes many of the following cheeseball techniques, including but not limited to: running around in my own end, skating backwards with it, icing it, flipping it out of play, freezing it with my goalie, and any combination of the above. I'm going to have fun with it and may even put out a specialized unit just for this task. And you know what, you should do it too. No need to feel guilty anymore.

Who else will join me? C'mon, be a part of something for once in your life! In the process, it can only help GAA, PK% and likely your Win%. Maybe eventually, people will become so fed up with clock wasting on the PK that the majority will lobby for the removal of penalties in future leagues. As an added benefit, my line changes in a league like this would be drastically cut down and across the board games will take less time to complete.

Let's kill penalties once and for all and put these refs in the unemployment line. The establishment isn't hearing our voices so it's time to take to the streets people.

  14. The difference between the two is that hot/cold is theoretically 50/50 and hidden while the home/away advantages are deliberately uneven but not hidden. Hot/Cold should balance out whereas the advantages aren't supposed to.

When do people ever lose because of hot/cold? With hot/cold enabled and even advantages across the board, I went to the finals in seven leagues straight and won all but one series before game 7. It is very unlikely that the hot/cold has a bigger impact than the advantages, which are clearly seen to have some sort of impact in the results.

And, even if "HOT", the boost that is received is not as drastic if the advantages aren't as high. So in GDL or with average/weak advantaged teams the HOT/COLD you see is not as extreme as you would find it in Classic with the strong advantages.

    Paragraph 1: Agree

Paragraph 2: Disagree (people can definitely win and lose games in based on who is hot/cold. It doesn't always even out in the short term, for example in a series. Long term yes).

Paragraph 3: Agree (good point about the combined effect. Obviously that is greater than either factors are alone).

  15. IMO, home/away advantages pale in comparison to the effects of hot & cold. And in classic, its hidden, so many can't say for sure whether the advantages screwed/helped them or they caught the cold/hot bug. More people around here are finally starting to take notice of its effects. But many are still either not perceptive enough to notice or reluctant to believe it. Way bigger issue than home/away will ever be from an impact on results standpoint.

Don't even get me started on penalties!

I understand why some prefer classic to remain untouched. I'm heavily in favor of changing aspects of classic though. But the consensus has spoken and therefore it feels like a lost cause. Everyone knows GDL is the most coveted trophy. But classic IMO could be more respected by some of us, if what we believe are improvements are made.

Or we just create a new league with what we want.

  16. sweet news! Thanks Chaos.

The detail-oriented part of me notices a few things I'd change.

    - Can we get a GDIF stat category in all-time standings and on league stats? It is a pretty important stat IMO.

    - Also, can we get win % and save % changed from for example 0.752 to read 75.2? PP, PK, PS, & SPCT all have the latter.

    - Do we need the .0 in the team points column? There are no fractions of points awarded to anyone in terms of wins/losses/ties. I know, nitpicking on this last one but can't help it haha.

  17. fact check playtex doesn't make condoms lol .......I meant to say durex! I hope the designer of durex condoms burns in a liquid fueled semen death

What happened? Get a scare? Or is there a mini KG somewhere in the world? I don't think it's fair to blame a major rubber manufacturer. Spend a little more time warming up her engine, get the juices flowing first, instead of just whipping it out and jamming it in a bone-dry love canal.
