  2. So let's get two to four more players?

You have to remember that with six-per conference, only those top-two spots are really SOLID playoff berths.

Plus that system you have up there is REALLY squirrely, and probably wouldn't work that well because people would stall in their series - only four series would be able to run at the same time, the rest of them are basically waiting for their opponents.

It wouldn't be any more cause for stalling than any other playoff format. 6 out of 8 teams making the playoffs is way too much. Even so, with 6 teams in on a side, we could only be doing 4 series max, at once. More players is a possibility, but 16 coaches is enough for a first season, methinks.

  3. I'd suggest an even number then. Anything that isn't divisible by 2 or 3 gets kinda weird in terms of the #1 seed's actual advantage.

EDIT: Just read your idea for 5 teams - don't like it. The NFL did something in the 80's, that would be the way to do it (give 1, 2, and 3 a bye, and 4/5 is a play-in). But I'd rather see 4 or 6.

The 1 seed's advantage is that they have to play the lowest seeded team after 2 vs 5 and 3 vs 4. The disadvantage to being the lowest seed to advance out of the 2v5 and 3v4 games is that you have to win an extra game to get to the finals.

The most games you'd have to win if you were a 1 seed or a 2 seed would be 2, to get to the finals. But, if you're a 4 or 5 seed and you manage to advance, you're likely going to need to go through the 1 seed, then the 2 seed. It shakes things up a little and really puts the emphasis on getting either the 1st or 2nd seed. Using this format, the 1 seed will always have the easiest route to the finals, and the lower seed to get out of the first round will not only play tougher teams, but they'll have to play through 3 series'. Make sense?

I want 5 because 4 is too few in my opinion, and 6 is too many by any opinion.

  4. We have 16 coaches, about perfect for this type of league. The coaches are

Coach -- AIM Name -- Team

    Freydey32 -- Freydey -- Canadiens

    Zalex1414 -- Zalex -- Sabers

    IcestormNHL94--Icestorm -- Oilers

    Bigchiefjay1016 -- Shifty -- Blackhawks

    Houlanov -- Houlanov -- Penguins

    BeefJerkyRules6 -- Bo -- Whalers

    KWhiteGoCubs -- KWhite -- Senators

    Gihtarman -- Shaftman -- Jets

    HOKKEEFAN2 -- Hokkee -- Ducks

WagsTH -- Wags -- Red Wings

    Metzgerism -- Metzgerism -- Sharks

    kbermangv -- Ken -- Bruins

    Sebe82 -- Sebe -- Leafs

    canadianist -- Andre -- Nordiques

    leiferickson -- joshreitan -- ???

    EastVanApna -- EastVanApna -- Flyers

We will have two conferences, just like before. Play each team in your conference 4 times, each team in the opposite conference 2 times each. 28 in-conference, 16 out-of-conference, this will make for 44 games.

I would like to see 6 teams make the playoffs from each conference. That may seem like a high number, but towards the end of the season it should ensure that the lower teams in the standings stay interested. The 1st and 2nd ranked teams in each conference will have a 'bye' in the first round of the playoffs. The 3rd and 6th seeds will play in the first round, and the 4th and 5th will play. After this is sorted out, the winners of the first round will be re-seeded for the second round matchups.

I was also toying with the idea of 5 teams making the playoffs. In this case, 1st seed would have a bye. In the first round, 2nd would play 5th and 3rd would play 4th. The lowest seeded team to move on to round 2 faces 1st seed. The winner of 1st seed and lowest advancing seed plays the higher advancing seed from the first round. For example....

    First round

    5 upsets 2

    3 beats 4

    Second round

    1 vs 5

    Third round

    1/5 vs 3

Fourth round is the championship. This way the lowest seed throughout automatically stands to play the most games to get to the championship. Phew...that's a mouthful. (That's what she said)

Let me know what you guys think...
