Im washed up my friend. What even is a cb check

Also I feel like im using unsharpened skates when I dont have my analog stick lol

I think Raph is hinting that they will manipulate the brackets to put you in the top 3. Before you call me a troll, smozoma confirmed that they don't even bother to verify the wins/losses:

"I (smozoma) won my game, but something in the score spreadsheet got mixed up and it was recorded as a loss, sending me down to the 2nd/3rd seed bracket right away, putting a lot of games between me and moving on to the Final 16."

    Source: http://www.kingof94.ca/results.html

And, why is that part even on the website? That would make me question the legitimacy of the tournament.

    Absolutely false.

There has never been a "let's all spend $1000 and burn a couple work vacation days to go to Vancouver and just play exis" event. There never will be.

It took over 10 years for someone to have the idea to have a BIG LIVE TOURNAMENT to get people together. Remove the tournament, and no one goes.

It's not just a gathering, it's an event.

I disagree. Yes people may not want to go to Vegas or Vancouver because it's expensive, but Toronto isn't far from most community members. Guys were showing up to Toronto excited to meet people live, not play NHL '94. Even if there was no formal tournament, guys would have showed up.

Imagine playing a high stakes money tourney online, with random asymmetric lag, desynchs, "whoops my computer crashed", "my kid started puking" etc etc. It'd be a disaster.

Run one (minus the money) and people will play and people will watch. It might take a few runs to pick up steam. Run a stream so it's exciting, so it's an event. If we can get spectator mode working in RetroArch, there's a LOT of potential there. Run it as the RetroArch testbed to get people using it. Have monthly qualifiers building up to an elite event. You'll get some people playing.

Nope. The rules can't be taken seriously for that. People could play in a tournament for free, but they would prefer a much different ruleset.

I don't even disagree that letting people play with whatever team they want will show who can play the best game of 94, but the tournament is taking the approach that you need to be able to play with and win with any team. If it really gets to the point that whoever picks the matchup wins, then it'd need to be fixed, but we're not there yet (or no one noticed!). Maybe we need "bans". Maybe we need a couple best-on-best games in the finals (I don't think anyone would prevent it if both competitors wanted to play that way). We're not there yet. As a spectator, it's a lot of fun seeing the different matchups.

Not enough good players are attending for you to see the BS. KingRaph and AJ play against jer_33. OK yes maybe you will see consistency there. Have tons of elite players there, and you will find the winner would be like picking a name out of a hat.

I didn't know that how much we've contributed makes being toxic ok.

No, but people have the impression that I do nothing but troll. I don't like guys like chefstar88 who do nothing and sit around slacking and wasting time calling me a troll who "sucks the life" out of things. Nobody ever mentions how I was the only one who worked to bring GDL back from the dead, how I worked to bring Blitz back from the dead, confirmed more newcomers than almost everyone, commissioned multiple leagues, made multiple league ROMs, ran multiple drafts, etc.

What you have said is the most insanely idiotic thing I've ever read.  Nothing you have written could be considered a rational thought.  Everyone in this forum is now dumber for having read it.  I award you no points, and may the NHL94 gods have mercy on your soul.

Seriously, your level of trolling exceeds even my own.  Go find a new bridge.

I'll rephrase it in a nicer way.

I say the King of '94 tournament is nothing more than a get together with NHL '94 on the side because the charm of the tournament is meeting community members in person and having a good time. NHL'94 is just icing on the cake. Let's put it this way: Almost all community members who attended the King of '94 tournament would have likely attended even if there was no tournament, but almost nobody who attended the King of '94 would bother to play in a King of 94 tournament if it weren't a live event.

I said the format is something you would set up for a birthday party because it is. I added in the 12-year old part for exaggeration, but besides that the King of '94 really reminds me of something I would find at a birthday party.

    ---------------------------------------------------------

A true competitor is not going to take the King of '94 seriously (from a competitive standpoint). The rules are too wacky for it to mean anything at a high level. That's why I find it crazy when people are talking about best players in the world because of the King of '94.

    ---------------------------------------------------------

Yes, I like to troll. But at the end of the day, I actually do help out the community more than 99% of members. If there was an all-time leaderboard of productive community members, I would definitely be extremely close to the top.

From what I can remember, saucer passes have nothing to do with button or directional execution. Saucer passes only happen when your pass is a breakout pass out of your own defensive zone, and they happen automatically. Saucer passes never happen in the offensive zone.

This is just from memory though so I could be completely wrong.

I think saucer passes happen when the pass would otherwise be intercepted by a stick on the ice. I'm not 100% sure though.

In the post below I will write the story behind this list.  But what are some of the glitches and fixes and improvements that, if added to NHL94, would make an amazing game even better?  After I have a few, I will prioritize the list.

    • Glitch - The Infamous "Weight Bug"
    • Glitch - Out of Control Skater (You know, your man is skating 3x faster than normal, and only partially responsive, for a spell)
    • Glitch - One Timer miss instead of speed burst (You know, you try to speed a forward towards the puck, and instead he whiffs on a one timer... irritating)
    • Glitch - Stuck on Manual Goalie (you can't switch players off of goalie for some reason)

IMO these are the only ones I would fix. Also, I would decrease the manual control delay and allow for players to aim their one-timers (like in SNES).

Ok I think I see what premium might be saying about home/away affecting hot/cold... In that if all the teams are using 0/0, it's going to feel like guys are cold compared to the original Rom or blitz because the average bonuses are low.

Look at the difference between hot/cold in GDL and Blitz. In GDL, the players seem to always be consistent, but in Blitz there is a clear difference in the stats.

In Blitz, players with 4 stickhandle toddle when HOT, but this is not the case in GDL. I think this has to do with the home/away advantages because it happens with the strong advantaged teams in Classic.

  7. 55 minutes ago, Brutus said:

SO, in OPTION 5, it states ALL attributes will either be HOT or COLD.

FOR me, it surely seemed that the number of times a guy is COLD and more specifically WAY COLD seemed to be much greater than any other combo.

That's why I'd rather have it where each rating is randomly plus or minus 8 points, because then you can still find some use for a partially cold player.

Just my take on it.  Maybe there could be an easy fix where speed/agility are tied together, Shot Power/Shot Accuracy tied together and Stick Handling/Passing tied together, but not all of them, so if a player is COLD shot, he might have a HOT shot!

That'd be way more fun than all cold or all hot, imo.  BUT, I can't code crap.

I don't think you get guys "WAY COLD" or "WAY HOT" in GDL or Summer League though. I'm pretty sure the home/away advantages don't allow that to happen.

  8. 1 minute ago, CoachMac said:

Home Advantage can be from 0 to 5.

Strong Home 2 vs Brutal Road 3 = 5 Home advantage

Strong Home 2 vs Strong Road 0 = 2 Home advantage

Weak Home 0 vs  Brutal road 3 = 3 Home Advantage

Weak Home 0 vs Strong Road 0 = 0 Home advantage Personally hate it, but the best setting to eliminate advantages.

    That makes sense.

  9. 1 minute ago, Brutus said:

Well, this is definitely better than when a guy is cold, all his ratings are cold, especially when it seems to be way more often the guy is EXTREME cold in this option more times than not.

I disagree. This will mess up the skating because agility and speed are two different stats. You probably want those two stats to be in sync with each other.

Also, the hot/cold seems to depend on what the home/away advantages are. I think the advantages have to be set to average (like in GDL), and you will almost never see anyone extremely hot or cold.

If you do want the hot/cold, I think Blitz did it best. Every home team gets a strong advantage, and every road team has an average one.

Currently, it's set for the home team to be weak and the road team to be strong.

But really, to keep it suuuuuper simple, can't you say:

    If you want to C-check:

    • If you are using a light guy, use C only
    • If you are using a fat guy, do CB

(Not Sure what to do for in-betweeners, like 7-9 weight... B-check? Pray?)

I am not a good CB checker, but the above I can keep straight.  It is generally correct, right? (I know I am too old and dumb to do any quick math on the fly...)

Raph's is more effective. You need to take into account the weight of both the checker and the receiver. Sometimes it's better for light players to CB check and vice versa.

What if you have a 5 weighter and you come across a 3 weighter? You would want to B check or CB check instead of C check.

  11. 1 hour ago, kylewat said:

I also have never witnessed that checking increases the odds of a CB. You'd expect some of the 1 checking guys to suck at CB checks, and I've never noticed that.

    2 hours ago, Brutus said:

I had no issues checking w/ Coffey in C/b.  I've not witnessed Raph's perception of better C/b with higher checking.

I think @kingraph is correct. The checking rating seems to make a difference.

  12. Body checks work 99% of the time if the checker is two points lighter than the receiver. The exceptions to this are when the receiver has high stick handling (5 or 6), when the receiver has a strong enough home advantage and >=4 stick handling.

Sometimes a check just won't have any effect at all. I'm not sure what causes this, but it's a lot more common when you play against the CPU. That is what I consider to be the remaining 1%.

Anyone can check anyone, but if the general rule doesn't apply, I'd say it's about a 15% chance.

Also, body checks should be done with enough distance between the players. If you are too close when you start your check, you will just brush up against your opponent. When you are very close to someone you want to check, watch the legs of your player, and start your body check when you are on your back leg so you can get enough momentum. This doesn't apply to ALL situations, but usually you can tell when you are too close to body check.

    Raph summed up the rest.
