  1. I am on vacation until Jan 7. So I am absent WITH leave. The Toronto Maple Leafs will be back, well rested, and ready to make a run for the cup!
  2. Tip C: Hotkeys (Keyboard Shortcuts) f - fullscreen i - "leave the game" - Used when switching player positions or when spectating. "Leaving the game" is similar to unplugging your controller from the console. F1 - Quick Menu when in game F5 - save state F6 - decrease save state slot F7 - increase save state slot F4 - load save state ESC - hard exit NOTE: Config is set up to auto-increment save states. You do not need to change save state slots after hitting F5. More to come...
  3. Tip B: Hot Swapping Home and Away with "i" Keyboard Shortcut One great thing about RetroArch is you can "hot swap" home and away. As long as the guy hosting is using Direct Connection. You can even do it mid-game or whenevs. This is super handy. To start, let's say both guys are connected. The host will be home, since he connected first. If you need to change that, do this: 1. the host hits "i" to leave (right from ROM menu or wherever, it will not reset anything) 2. the other guys hits "i" to leave, then "i" again to reconnect (he will be home now, because he is "first" to connect) 3. the original host now hits "i" to re-connect, but because he is 2nd to connect now, he will be visitor Tada!! Ideally, at least one guy will have Direct Connection ability. That person should host. (If both are Direct capable, it doesn't matter who hosts.)
  4. Tip A: Use Direct Connection (instead of Relay) if Possible Direct is better than Relay. Ideally at least one player has a Direct Connection. They should be host, and you can use the "i" shortcut (see below) to swap home and away as needed. There is a writeup for creating a Direct Connection here: RetroArch Setup Guide (it is at start, in sections 1 & 2)
  5. Issue 6: Black Flicker Fix: Fixed since RetroArch version 1.7.8+. No longer an issue Description: A black flicker -- where for a brief moment the entire RA screen is black -- happens at regular intervals. Intervals can be only a couple seconds apart (making game unplayable) or every minute or so. We think it has to do with the refresh rate getting out of sync. We also think it happens more for the person connecting than the one hosting, or possibly only on the connecting side. More to come as we investigate.... In the mean time, possible play with the VSync, Refresh Rate, etc. under MAIN MENU > SETTINGS > VIDEO Also, it may help for the user experiencing the flicker to host. (Which requires that they use "Direct" connection, and "i" hotkey to be visitor.)
  6. Are you referring to issue #1, or #2? Also, can you expand on the "i" hotkey to swap players? (How to use, expected behavior.)
  7. I have two issues, which I experienced with jrolling. Issue 1: Delayed Buttons When I hosted, with a Direct connection, the timing was off. (This is almost always the case for me, with anyone, when I use RA.) It felt on my end like I was playing someone in Finland. There was a "constant lag", though it was uniform (no lag spikes). We did get a game in successfully, but I prefer using GENs because (most of the time) the button presses are more immediate. With the RA lag I experience, quick one timers are off, as are finesse dekes. On jrolling's side, he felt things were fine. (Though he is new, so maybe not acquainted with the nuances in feel, yet.) Issue 2: Jumpy Players When he hosted, with a Relay connection, it was unplayable for me. On his end, he said it was fine again. This time, even in menus, I could see it was off. His movements were frenetic when choosing his team, and flickering all over. When the puck dropped, my players were teleporting many pixels from where they should be, and jumping back again. After 5 seconds I stopped the game and said we needed to troubleshoot. Trouble(shoot) was, we are both new to RA, and had already had a heck of a time getting game 1 in, so we bailed. I was exhausted, and near tears. (Ok, I exaggerate.) NOTE: I understand I can use the "i" hotkey, to keep hosting, and have RA swap players 1 and 2, so he would be home even on my host, right? I tried this, and the behavior was strange. (I feel like it booted me out of the ROM, but maybe I hit another key?) My expectation was, at ROM menu where you choose teams, hit "i" and he would seamlessly be home, and I would seamlessly be visitor, no muss, no fuss. Is my expectation wrong? Thanks to any and all who can assist. (Probably "any and all" is poor Chaos.... *sigh*)
  8. Now that I reflect on it, 5 must be the limit. I do not think one player can get 2 penalties in one go (I have never seen it, anyway), and since goalies can't get penalized (even for brutal hits!), that leaves only 5 players on the ice that can get a call. (Less if you are shorthanded.) So, 3 must be rare. But I can't help but think -- like lightning striking 2x in the same spot -- on some rare occasion 4 and even 5 must have happened. Heck, here is a woman that won the lottery twice on the same day!
  9. I liked it better when you cast several votes by yourself. Also, didn't AngryJay win and refuse the trophy or something? And he is up again? Did Riddick Bowe get another WBC belt when he threw his first one in the trash? (I kid, AJ is a worthy nominee every year. Love that he is a top tier player and does the vids and other stuff to make others better.) And I love what Arda has done. He is in a unique position with his media ties and skills, which really benefits the community. But you gotta go with Chaos. If Chaos disappeared, it would be he equivalent of our little community getting hit with a nuclear bomb. The dude is irreplaceable. (On another note, IMO you yourself should be in the running. You definitely should be Bud of the Year one of these years, Halifax.)
  10. Just played a Christmas' series vs Atomic. It was 1 1 in the second, game 7, and the whistle went indicating I took a penalty. But then a second one popped up a the same time. Then a 3rd. All of a sudden I had three simultaneous 2:00 PIMS. Was furious. Hate when this nonsense happens in a game 7. I have played many hundreds of hours, this *must* have happened to me before. But I can't remember it? Two simultaneous is not that rare, but 3? Anyone ever take 4? (Or, gulp!, more?)
  11. As for pre-calculating things, I don't think it is necessary. It would be a pretty simple formula to calculate things, so I don't think it would be advantage to do it ahead of time. Furthermore, there are quite a few variables, so it would be a ton of pre-calculated stuff which would defeat the purpose. (I could be wrong, or missing something. I am definitely not an expert in Assembly Language, which is what I know NHL94 and its ancestors were written in. But I just don't see the calculations taking much time.) On a weird tangent, when you take a shot that rings of the corner of the post/crossbar, and it hovers there for a split second, and then goes into the net, I have always thought it is like a supercomputer crunching some insane math and it just can't come up with "Is it in, or out?" (I wonder why it does that. Makes me chuckle.)
  12. Seems to me, when a shot is taken that "touches" the goalie, there is definitely a calculations that take into account shooting skill versus saving skill. That is, puck speed (which was based on initial Shot Power plus a random whiff factor) and especially Shot Accuracy, calculated against Goalie Skill (various attributes). Sometimes a high Shot Accuracy forward will score on a shot that looks identical to a low shot accuracy shot guy, where the latter does not score. Similarly, for goalies, shots will bounce off Roy and Eddie like they are made of stone, and sail right through Hrudey and similar crap tenders like they are swiss cheese. Heck, some slappers look like they go through a hole in Hrudey's chest, like he is a donut.
  13. Everyone is familiar with those crease cuts. Your opponent cuts across your crease, and your idiot goalie stacks his pads, leaving a yawning cage for an easy lay up. Sometimes you actually take control of your goalie in time, and yet (in what I consider a glitch) he flops right down all the same, even though you did not activate him stacking the pads. (If I took control, I want to have full control, dammit!) What is the best way to prevent these crease cuts, and swoops with similar effect? (That result in stacked pads, yawning cage.) Is it more about preventing them with your D-men? Or early, proactive goalie control? (Sometimes I do the early manual, but feel I am still prone because my manual is not expert level.) Maybe there is some technique I am not thinking of? Share your knowledge! Any tips and suggestions are appreciated. Atomic and Zep seem especially good at making my goalie flop like a moron, and it is frustrating the hell out of me. (I don't exi vs Zep much, but know he is an expert at inducing the Flop, especially with #99 whom he loves. I exi Atomic all the time, and he gets one of these cheese goals every couple games, whereas I get them on him rarely. I give him credit -- a goal is a goal! -- but seek some tips on preventing them. If I haven't figured it out in 25 or so years, I need help. So help!!) Thanks! NOTE: I am talking about standard crease cuts as well as swoops near the net, both of which result in stacking the pads and easy goals. How best to defend these?
  14. Yeah, thanks, and congrats!, Brutus! Season was excellent. I enjoy the WBF leagues more, and I think you had the right idea with a weighted draft. (I know it is more work.) Also, the short penalties are the way to go. (I am playing Classic now, and a 2:00 PIM with 5:00 periods seems insane.) Overall, very enjoyable, and your Commish effort is appreciated.
  15. I am sure the Commish will weigh in, but I think it is a minority that flat out won't use Retroarch. (And for them, they are probably having a tech problem with RA, just like you are for GENs, so it is not like they are just being grumpy.) I think > 80% of people can use either (but that is just a guess), which includes myself.
  16. Open your eyes, matey! The J&J profile was from only a few days ago. Jump in, and tell us your story.
  17. I did just host MikeG, and had a great connection. (My best ever with RA.) So I think Atomic has something screwy happening. We will keep looking into it.
  18. Atomic and I experience quick Desyncs when we try to play together. Either from start of game, or near start (within seconds). Both run Windows. Both have Port Forwarding (so Relay Off). Not sure how to troubleshoot it? (I will google, but thought someone might have insight?) Played GENs without issue after.
  19. Issue 4: On Mac in Fullscreen Mode, Hot Keys Not Responsive Fix: Fixed in RetroArch version 1.7.8+ On Windows, you can use the "F" hotkey to toggle in and out of fullscreen. Does not appear to work for everyone on a Mac. However, to scale your window you can use: MAIN MENU > SETTINGS > VIDEO and use the "Windowed Scale" settings to change the size of the screen.
  20. Issue 3: SNES "Multitap" Message During Netplay In Netplay, after connecting, you get an in-game screen message "Multitap 5 needs to be connected to Player # 2" - For some reason, RetroArch thinks there's a multi-tap connected to Player 1. To fix go to: QUICK MENU > CONTROLS and change the Player 1 to "SNES Joypad". One or both players may need to do this. Return to the game and it should work fine.
  21. Issue 2: Jumpy Video in Win10 To check your monitor refresh rate - https://www.windowscentral.com/how-change-monitor-refresh-rate-windows-10. Set this to 60Hz. Jumpy Video and Stuttering Audio go hand in hand. It is usually due to the estimated refresh rate being too low, compared to what the monitor is set to run at. Please see Issue 8 below.
  22. Issue 1: No Audio while ROM is playing BETTER FIX: dsound audio driver stinks. Please use the xaudio driver: MAIN MENU -> SETTINGS -> DRIVER Change the "Audio Driver" to "xaudio" (if you haven't touched it, this is the default setting). Start a ROM, if you have no sound, exit RA and install the following Microsoft package - Microsoft DirectX Runtime Package - NOTE in the 1.8.5 package, this is included. Go into the RetroArch-1.8.5 folder and look for the DirectX Installer folder. Run the application in there (need internet access) Once installed, start RA and load a ROM. Audio problem should be fixed. IF THE ABOVE STILL DOESN'T FIX THE PROBLEM: If you are playing a ROM and can't hear anything, try this: MAIN MENU > SETTINGS > DRIVER Change the "Audio Driver" to "dsound", restart RetroArch, and try it again. This fixes the issue.
  23. "Tips and Troubleshooting" Cheat Sheet These are some issues and some fixes for RetroArch. The fixes and more details are in the messages below. TROUBLESHOOTING No Audio Issue Win10 Jumpy Video see Issue 8 SNES "Multitap" Netplay Issue Mac Fullscreen/Hotkey Issues fixed in 1.7.9+ "Slow Motion" Video "Black Flicker" Issue fixed in 1.7.9+ No longer a problem with 1.7.9+ Audio/Video Stuttering and Poor Framerates Please share your short tips and tweaks in the thread below! We want to cover as many situations as possible, and build this Cheat Sheet. TIPS A. Use Direct Connection (instead of Relay) if Possible B. Hot Swapping Home and Away with "i" Keyboard Shortcut C. Hotkeys (Keyboard Shortcuts)
  24. This is not going to be helpful at all, but I couldn't help but think of quantum theory and parallel universes... could it be that somehow different realities were overlapping and interfering with one another? Like, maybe RA conjures up some sort of intersecting wormholes? (It is beta, after all.) (Sorry, please disregard this message. Couldn't help myself.)
  25. jackandjose - GENS Name, age, occupation, location Judd, 47, small business owner(lawn and landscape), Fort Collins, Colorado What hobbies or other interests do you have? Climbing the mountains of Colorado is my passion. I also play hockey(ice and inline), table tennis and racquetball. When did you get introduced to the game NHL'94? How did it happen? Started playing 93 in college and then of course 94. I don't remember how I was introduced, but I played hockey and owned a Sega so I think it was inevitable. Never really played that much though. Loved it, but just didn't have the time in college. When did you get introduced to nhl94.com and the online community? Were you playing between these two dates? (That is, between first becoming aware of game, and first becoming aware of nhl94.com.) I joined the community in January 2013. My job gives me a 4 month winter vacation, and that winter I got heavily involved in online RBI leagues. While playing someone in RBI I learned about the 94 site and joined almost immediately. I had not played 94 since 95 came out. I switched each year to the new updated game through 98, and stopped playing entirely around 2000 when I got married. What are a couple things that you love about the game? I love everything about the game. It's so simple, yet so complex and is easily the most complete game ever made. I can't stand playing any new hockey games. Are you a gamer in general? What other games do you play? I am not a gamer in general and mostly only play 94 and RBI. Occasionally I'll play other classic NES games too. Do you follow hockey in real life? Any other sports? I only follow hockey casually and when I do it's only the Avalanche. MacKinnon is probably the only player I know for the Avs. When they first came to Colorado I bought season tickets and followed them religiously for 10 years or so. That was an exciting time with so many great playoff runs and legends like Sakic, Forsberg, Roy and Bourque. I just don't have the time anymore to follow. In high school and college I was a huge capitals fan so was very excited to see them win the cup this year after so many years of frustration. If you have been to a live tourney, what was it like meeting the real people behind the screen names? Any big surprises? I went to the Vegas tournament and had a good time. It was cool to meet everyone and put faces with screen names. I was with my wife so missed out on some of the experience I think. What is behind your screen name? (Origin story, if there is one.) The name jackandjose was taken from a song by my favorite band(Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers, formerly The Refreshments). The song is actually called Jack vs Jose. My wife and I have seen them about 175 times. Favorite NHL94 player in game (and why)? Peter Bondra because he was my favorite player as a kid and I love his speed.
