  1. Ok, I am in. don't care what team. ( I had to do it, all of my potential exi guys are in already.) Should be cool.
  2. I would love to play and would take any team, however, 20 games a week is steep. I don't want to commit unless I know I could make time for it, which I can't at this point. Bummer. Especially because guys like JV were people I was hoping to hit up for exis, and now he will be tied up. Anyway, good luck with the season, it's a cool idea.
  3. Where is "3. Playback in Gens"? (I don't see it in the Win7 Context menu of explorer (when you right click) or in Gens or in Kailera?) (But I am probably missing it like I did the "Records" folder right under my nose.) Also, regarding you giving feedback on my game, I will take a rain check, but I really appreciate it! I have been given so much feedback, plus once I figure out how to record my own games, I feel I should be able to make improvements by analyzing my games myself. After all, It is only fair I do my own homework before getting others to invest time on my behalf.
  4. Ok, so many people have mentioned recording video, and then analyzing the games. This makes a lot of sense. So how do I do it? I (usually) use the old Kaillera, and I see a checkbox that says "Record Game". To test things out I checked it. Played a game. Now I expected to see a huge video file in the same directory as Kaillera (my main Gens folder). Nope. So I looked in Documents/Video (I use Win7). Nothing there either.... Where is the video stored from the old Kaillera? And what do I have to do to make this work? Any help much appreciated...
  5. When you say warp in, do you mean just as the guy is pulling a deke near the net, or even earlier when he is approaching? Also, it was all good and fine when AngryJay was speaking hypothetically, but now you have come around and confirmed how crap I am based on actually playing me! Thanks a lot! (Just kidding. I appreciate the advice and hopefully the 2nd half of my season will be improved.) Anyhoo, these MG tips are great! I am going to try not using C. (And no wonder I was getting frustrated when Moog would stack the pads and freeze -- when I pressed C! -- as a dude casually skated across to shoot on a yawning cage.)
  6. Thanks a lot for the many responses! This is truly a great community. Also, I can't believe Smozoma and AngryJay have even looked at my personal record with Boston to help in their answers. That is above and beyond my expectations! You wrote many pearls of wisdom, and I will re-read and process it all. But this bit about using C button during goalie control is something I have been wondering. I always press C when I go to make a save, which often throws me off because it is just one more thing to worry about as I (try) to push my unwieldy tender in front of a shot. But are you suggesting that I don't even have to press C? That if I am just positioned properly, I can block shots just as effectively?
  7. One thing: Can I get some clarification on B-checks? I am definitely guilty of overusing C checks (and missing and being out of position) and under using B checks, but that is because B checks don't seem to work that well? (No doubt because I am doing something wrong.) What is the desired outcome of a good B-Check? (The player gets knocked down, the player cough up the puck, or maybe you just jostle the player and interrupt his skating?) Can any player do an effective B-check, or are some players more suited? (Please don't let there be some weight bug type of thing.) How do you execute a good B-check? Are you aiming for the puck? Or treat it like a C-check (try to nail the body) but you use B? Can you do them on angles or from behind?
  8. Wow TomKabs, Smozoma and Uncle Seth, thanks for these replies. They are really well thought out and better than I was even expecting! I am going to study the closely. Also guys (TomKabs) don't worry if your advice is too expert, I would rather see all recommendations and then cherry picks what is do-able for now, with the more advanced stuff in the back of my mind for later. (Who knows, once it is planted there maybe it will be easier tonurture as I get better.) (Also a shout out to the mod who corrected my spelling of Genesis in the subject! I saw the error myself but saw no way to fix it after submitting. Thx!)
  9. EDIT: Please read this whole thing: there is great advice from the pros. I have been playing now for 3 years, and climbed to the top of the B Tier. (Not bragging -- that is nothing to be proud of in 3 years, lol). Here are my main three tips now, looking back: 1. take manual goalie often (so you get better at it) 2. clog the center in front of your goalie when defending (as in, don't chase in your own zone) 3. use b-checks over c-checks! These three items will take you to mid-B level very quick. Two were actually in my post below, but I wanted to emphasize them, because they are the two keys, IMO, plus the b-check extra one. Below is the original post: ---------------------------------------------- I have played NHL'94 and I am not bad against my friends here in Toronto. Online I am in the Classic League B1 Level and it is a different story. I am getting my ass handed to me for the most part. What is the most important advice you can give a rookie paying online for the first time? So far I have hear people mention: 1. Take goalie control more, even if you suck at it 2. Don't chase the guys on the wings, instead clog up the middle and shut down passing lanes 3. react quicker (this is a tough one, but King Raph sad it will develop naturally as I play more games) Feel free to elaborate on the items above, or add entirely new items. I figure the quicker rookies like me get competitive, the better it is for everyone. Also, how important is using a real Gens controller? Right now I am using a Buffalo USB thingy -- I think modeled after a retro Nintendo gamepad -- and I know that isn't helping. Thanks guys!
  10. I have played 3 people in the B league so far, and eggink destroyed me the most, so yeah, I think he is the favorite, based on my limited exposure. (I sure hope he is the best of everyone, or I am in serious troulbe!) I will say after the whallopping, he offered some excellent constructive criticism, so you can count me as a fan of egg!
  11. Well I am using the kailera that came with the zip from NHL94online.com/ (Perhaps the preferred one can be put in that Zip instead of the old one? Not sure who controls that.) Anyhoo, if I use the new one, does it work with the old one (if my opponent has that one), or do you and your opponent have to match up with the same version?
  12. Can you expand on this some? In the Gens "Connection Window" (is this app "Kaillera"?) I see in the righthand bottom area a label "Smoothing" with dropdown that has: 1.none 2.if near UB 3.always 4.extra You mentioned the "If near UB" option, so I get that, but what do I do for the "1 or 2 frames" you mentioned? Am I adding frames or dropping frames or what? And how? Thanks everyone for the helpful tips and info.
  13. Hello and good day to you! I have played 6 official game so far, and one of them was so completely desynced, we agreed to replay the entire game. (We had vastly different scores when we realized it was desynced.) I have these questions: 1. is this normal, to have one game completely desynced out of 6? I was hoping it would be a very rare occurrence, like 1 in 100 2. Are there some tell tale signs that you are desynced, so I can nip it in the bud? (I did notice my opponent behaving erratically, and sometimes not even moving, and repeatedly paused the game and asked if everything was ok, but got no response initially. What is the protocol? What are the telltale signs? It would suck to pause a game and realize there is no desync happening.) 3. Does severe lag/stuttering usually indicate a coming desync? Or can a desync happen and there is no lag or distortion at all? 4. Is it possible to have minor desyncs, and then it sync back up, without noticing? 5. Is it possible lag and distortion only happens for one player, and the other guy is fine? I have to say, on the one hand I am amazed that technology allows us to play online like this at all with a 20 year old game. However, I am also disappointed because pretty well every game I see some stuttering/distortion (and at least one big desync) and I am using a very fast wired internet connection on a very fast computer with 16 gigs of RAM in the biggest city in Canada. DISCLAIMER: I am getting my ass handed to me most games and I am not blaming technology. I know I am not as talented as most on this site. I just want to understand the limits of the technology and if I am having a bad run here or if it is par for the course.
  14. Ok, thanks guys. I actually have more questions, but I will wait for Chaos's thread in case they are answered there from the get-go... Cheers, Aqua
  15. Hello, I am new to playing online, and have joined the Classic League, but have questions. If there is a FAQ or some thread that answers these, please point the way. 1. When does the Classic League start? (I keep expecting to see a message saying it has begun, but maybe the Blitz league has to wrap up first? I expected it to begin right after the draft was complete, but like I said, I am new.) 2a. Where is the schedule? Or is it more like "play each guy in your group of 11 (I am in group B, so maybe play each member 4x, for 40 games total?) 2b. Does the order we play matter? I figure no, just play each person the right number of times? But read something about 6 game checkpoints, so maybe there is a limit of how many games you can play against the same team in a row? I have more questions, but don't want to write a novel. Especially if there is a FAQ or something I have missed? Thanks! Aqua EDIT: Realized my math was whack.
  16. When does the season start? (It just so happens I was thinking of switching to an undrafted team.)
  17. Does "Add/drop is fine for another available team" mean that a coach can swap their chosen team for a non-drafted team? And if yes, is this only before the season starts? Or at any point?
  18. Thank God! My head exploded when I read smozoma's explanation! :| Thanks a lot!
  19. Ok. So where is this 1 on 1 ROM? You have a link?
  20. Thaknks for the replies, guys. But if that was the case, soft resets would be happening when I played regular games too, not just for shootouts?
  21. I am trying to practice up in prep for the CLassic League. I am using the Gens that came with the zip, and a Buffalo USB controller, which I don't like much, but it is better than the keyboard. I configured the controller successfully, and have played a few practice games against CPU. I wanted to try some of those pass shots I have been hearing about, so swticed to shootout mode. Trouble! As soon as I setup shootout mode, and begin, right when I try to skate, the ROM does a soft reset. When I set it up again, and tried other controller buttons, like pass or shoot instead of moving, again as soon as my guy is shown on the ice and I press a button, soft reset. I re-did configuring the same controller, and the same problem occurs. Anyone have any ideas? If I don't master pass shots and CB checks I know I can never win a game. Cheers, aqua
  22. Here is why double charging full price will not work. There are two types of guys that could re-enter, those who have a chance, and those that do not. As Smozoma said, letting guys that have a chance (came in 5th or 6th in morning) re-enter is not fair to the people still in it. And the guys that do not have a chance, they will not want to double pay only to be fodder. So the appeal to double pay is only for a couple of people, that are real contenders. Which means the very real possibility that the extra spots -- that were already paid for!! -- will go unfilled. And the ultimate goal is to eliminate no-shows, not raise more $$, and for sure that objective is best served by not charging more. It would be a disaster if the pursuit of more $ led to no-shows not being reduced.
  23. All Time Faves in no particular order: 1. Ladybug (Colecovision) 2. Sid Meir's Pirates (C-64) 3. Castle's of Dr.Creep (C-64) 4. NHL'94 (Genesis) 5. Baldur's Gate (PC) The first 4 I play now and again on emulators. I could name more great C-64 games I played back in the day, but I figure if I haven't sought the ROMs out recently then they didn't stand the "test of time".
  24. Like you, hnfoo, I am very interested in giving credit to the real genius behind this game, and hope Mikey shines a strong light on that. (He did tell me he has it covered, and he has come through with everything else -- like the King of 94 trouney -- so I feel pretty good about it. Mikey is the man!) I know a lot more about the situation than I did when I posted in this thread in June. Specifically, I am very confident that it was Jim Simmons that programmed the game in it's entirety -- engine, physics, AI, the whole thing -- up until '94, when Lesser came and added some sugar to what was already a masterpiece. While "design" credit is given to many others, Jim Simmons programmed the first EA Genesis Hockey Game, as well as the first EA Genesis Madden game. The guy was like the Amadeus Mozart of videogame programming in the early 90s.
