  1. I got eliminated early, but had a great time. I did not play anybody that wasn't cool. Any one of my oponents would be a guy I would love to play with and grab some beers with in regular life. It is just as well I got out early cuz I am atteding a wedding tonight and am on my way there now. But I am keeping my eyes peeled on the Sega bracket. The coolest development I see is as of 5pm EST one of the top 16 that made it though -- Roberto Z. -- is a walk on and not associated with the online league or forum! That is so cool! Go Roberto! I hope he is a Toronto boy, too. Great tourney, folks!
  2. Great interview! And hopefully some people will show up to replace the no-shows.
  3. I would ask him: 1. Who came up with the vertical scrolling, birds-eye view? (Way before Nhl'94, obviously) 2. Who programmed the original game engine (and possibly the whole thing)? (Again, way before Nhl'94.) My feeling is, this game was great before Mark Lesser got involved, and I hope the early innovators that set the stage for '94 get due credit!
  4. That is a good write up but one small quibble: Where it says: "The event filled up it's available 120 available participants spots in only three weeks of being publicly announced, and is no longer taking reservations" it gives the impression (to me) that there is no waiting list, but the website mentions you can get on the waiting list.
  5. Hello, I am just a regular Joe who plays in person, but not online. So what I am asking may not even be possible, but I have no idea, so: Can someone make a 2 on 2 version of the game (which sounds so awesome) and put it on a cartrdige I can put in my Genesis and play? If so, I would like to buy it from someone at the Tourney in Toronto. Thanks, aqualizard
  6. Hey Mikey, what are you doing with the poster? Is it being printed, and if so, where are you putting them? Or is it for online mainly? In the event that the last few spots are not getting filled, I would advertise here in Toronto one week before the event, like putting that poster in the Toronto Sun newspaper. It is old school, yes, but there are likely hundreds of people that would join here in Toronto (who wouldn't have to travel) if they knew about the tourney.
  7. These are great points and I think you are 100% right about nurturing the noobs (like me!). As Halifax says, having a section in the FAQ addressing "glitches/exploits" will go a long way in showing good faith to the casual gamer like myself. (It will have to have GENS and SNES sections, since they have different exploits, obviously.) Can you thnk of other glitches/exploits to add? (Especially for Genesis!!) Can you elaborate on the "pass goal"? (To me, I just noticed once in a blue moon a pass goes awry and finds its way into the net, but I have the impression you pros know how to use a pass to score as an advantge, not mrely a fluke?)
  8. I don't play in the league here, I just play a couple times a year with friends. I live in Toronto so I registered for the tourney, but fully expect to get my ass handed to me by the pros. And that is fine. BUT!! I will be pissed if a bunch of "pros" use glitches I am unaware of to destroy me. Doesn't seem fair or sporting. I am aware of the weight bug, but what is this b-c check thing? And can people share other glitches/exploits that the casual player will not be aware of? (Perhaps I should start a separate thread?)
  9. I do have a cartridge to lend, but I work Tuesday. I will email you to see if we can figure it out. (But others that may be more available feel free to step forward in this thread in case things don't work out.)
  10. Do you literally just want the physical cartridge? Even if it is worn out and obviously used? (Or do you need the case, and manual, etc.?)
  11. Thanks. It is too long to type what he says, but if you view it in Safari you can probably hear it correctly. (Firefox on a Mac is too edge case for me to worry about fixing this bug.)
  12. It won't? What OS and Browser (name and version) are you using?
  13. This hostel is much closer: http://www.canadianalodging.com/directions.php (Although I do not think it looks as cool as the other one -- but it is closer to the Real Sports Bar -- walkable even.)
  14. I mentioned this before but the ultracheap otpion is http://theplanettraveler.com/hostel. It is a short streetcar ride from Union station. (10-15 minutes). It has dorm rooms available for $31 a night. it is in a cool area of Toronto, near Kensignton Market, and good bars and restaurants on College street.
  15. Wow, expensive. On hotels.com, Eaton Chelsea Toronto is $180 CAD per night. With two people that is $90 each. That seems do-able. Then you would be downtown, too. Not too far from Union station.
  16. Also, north of the Eaton Centre on Yonge Street are many sportswear stores with hockey jerseys/baseball caps and whatnot. If I were coming here, I would stay at the Delta (especially if Mikey gets a discount code) and do shopping just north, on Queen Street. I would walk from Spadina (west of hotel) to Yonge (east of hotel) on Queen street (this area is called "Queen West"). At Yonge and Queen you are at the corner where two big stores meet. The Hudsons Bay (thebay.com) and the Eaton Centre. And as I say, there are tons of stores on Yonge, too. If I were staying at the Delta, I WOULD NOT eat in that area. The tourist trap restaurants are crap, IMO. Except for one place -- Chipotle -- at University and Front street. (And another at Yonge and Dundas, near the Eaton Centre.)
  17. #1 I am looking for an area or specific store that might have antique/thrift stores where I could possibly find find vintage bobbleheads, pennants, table hockey, and hockey stuff.#2 A mall with a Roots store and a place to find a a wide variety (teams) of hockey stuff (jerseys, hats, t-shirts etc...) I live in downtown Toronto. I can;t help with #1, but for #2, the Eaton Centre, in the heart of downtown Toronto (and within walking distance of the Real Bar and the Delta hotel) is a mall with a Roots, and many other stores. https://www.cfshops.com/toronto-eaton-centre/stores.html
  18. THanks! I am glad I can contribute to the community and help Mikey in some small way.
  19. My guess is you are having a caching issue (that is, your browser is using a stored version of the page instead of a fresh one.)... to get a fresh page you need to bypass caching using simple methods like pressing CTRL-R (but it depends on OS and Browser... see http://www.wikihow.com/Force-Refresh-in-Your-Internet-Browser)
  20. Thanks. That is what I figured, but wanted to be clear.
  21. I am registered for the tourney in Toronto i September. I am assuming it is on a console. I do not really play on an emulator, but figured I would try to give it a go because then I can get some practice in online. Step 1 is getting the emulator going, step 2 is some practice games online. To you, how different does playing on a console feel compared with emulated play on a PC? I ask because to me it feels substantially different. And I do not mean playing someone online, where internet lag may be a factor. I am still at Step 1 -- have't tried online yet. I mean straight up playing the computer. It just feels different to me. For instance, I can score at will doing the deke on the console (against the computer), but on the emulator, my timing is off and I miss all the time? On my PC, I do not use a real Sega controller, I use some SNES imitation thingy (see "buffalo classic usb gamepad"). So that is a factor, but I don't think that is it? Thoughts?
  22. I am assuming this thread is where we should put any questions about the tournament rules, right? Question: Is the tournament going to use original consoles, or be emulated on a PC? (I am assuming original consoles.) Thanks, aqua
  23. Thanks for the replies. Don't now why but it just started working as soon as I tried again today.
  24. I am trying to get the the online play happening again, but I can't even configure GENs. When I go to edit the gamepad (following the instructions on this site) and reconfigure keys, as soon as I enter a new key, it default back to the old one immediately. Has anyone seen this issue and knows a workaround? I ordered a controller through Amazon, but in the mean time wanted to just use the keyboard. But 1. I can't edit the keys, and 2. the default keys don't do anything anyway? Anyone have any insights? Thanks, aqua
