  2. Last year, we were in full prep mode for "Modano Mo Problems".  Circumstances are not yet permitting us to commit to a time/venue for a local event.

As many of you know, I'm heavily involved with the Tecmo Super Bowl community, and run a tournament called "Full Nelson" every year in Green Bay.  Leading up to this tournament, we ran a series of paid online events with approximately 2 week schedules, followed by an additional week off, with a portion of the payout going to the winner, and the remainder going into the prize pool for that tournament.  After that we would roll into another tournament.

In short, they were a huge success.  Over $1,000 was paid out during the tournament weekend(over double the payout of the previous year), heavily boosted by the online participation.  To keep things fair, we did not allow the winner of one of these qualifiers to compete again.  In turn, that individual also won free entry to the live event.

It's my intention to do the same thing with NHL94 online events.  To mirror the fun of many of the Tecmo qualifiers, there will be themes and unique rules for each of these tournaments.  Although we do not have a live event scheduled, we know it's only a matter of time before we can finally host an event.  If that reality isn't possible in 2021, we would make sure to host an online tournament to mirror what we do in our live event, and then payout those funds we had collected from the qualifiers.  Our goal is 16-24 players per tournament.  With the recent increase of

I will be posting our first of hopefully four qualifier tournaments soon, and it's my intention to start games by the first the first week of December.  While we will permit people to stream their own games, we do reserve the right to stream the championship streams.  Those of you know the past of our events know we can put a quality broadcast with high end commentary together for you.

Thank you for your consideration and support, as we press forward.

    Sincerely,

    Trojan

This makes me think it isn't actually emulated 16 bit software, but actually a modern package made to look and sound retro.

Emulator data sizes for Retroarch are pretty large, and it has to integrate with the existing PS4 structure/OS.  This isn't too bad honestly.

If anyone is able to rip the Rewind game ROM, please don't share it on the forum. It's a new game, support it!

I don't condone piracy, but if it happens, you can blame our friends at EA for not making it available for stand alone purchase at launch.

If anyone tries sharing it on here, I hope admins will take it down.  Piracy through this platform on something people can actually buy new would be a  great way to get our beloved site taken down.  I know that for every NHL94 rom download for online play, dudes have a cart(or in my case about 25) and thus piracy isn't really a thing.  Hacks are a grey area.

If the game is $15 or less, I'll buy it just so that it helps the overall numbers.  If they want $20 or more for it, I don't see myself getting that value out of it.  Again, lack of online was a major factor.

  5. Growing up, I had NHL Hockey for DOS, but never owned NHL94 on console until later on in life.  It was and still is a great game, albeit not the easiest to fire up like a Genesis or SNES.  Scoring methods weren't as plentiful/repeatable as the console versions of 94, but I enjoyed the challenge, and the full season mode _ digitized narration was a major plus over consoles.

Once I got my first Playstation, I was drawn to the 97, 98, versions, and I eventually started getting PC version of EA NHL in 2000.  I also enjoyed the 2K series on Dreamcast.  While these games weren't perfect, they didn't take very long before you could find the cheaper ways of getting goals, and control schemes were all digital, meaning simple.  In retrospect, with the exception of the 2K series, and maybe NHL98's presentation, everything was more about the tech advances, and added features, enough to distract us from games past.

After the Dreamcast, I didn't buy another console for 6 years, gaming exclusively on the PC.  I was turned off by the short shelf life of the Dreamcast, and refused to get another console to replace it, in fear that the same thing would happen again.  I instead poured into the PC gaming universe.  For me, sports games ended up taking back seats to the wonders of LAN party games like Starcraft, Quake and Unreal Tournament, Battlefield 1942, and other big hits around 20 years ago.  Sports games to me belonged in the living room with a friend.

I don't claim to be a hockey video game historian, but it's my understanding that analog controls took over in a big way during the PS2/Xbox generation.  The focus towards online play, and continued simulation feel is evident.  I don't know when the digital control schemes of hockey games for shooting were replaced with "skill sticks", and countless jukes.  However, when I finally returned to try a NHL game by EA Sports for NHL 14, I saw they had the NHL94 controls.  Sadly, it didn't seem to help me control the players, and was more of a handicap by reducing what the players could do.  In short, I didn't have much fun with it, and the countless hours needed to get comfortable with everything really turned me off to it.  Even my son who is pretty decent at video games was never that proficient with it.  He could certainly function, but he didn't grow up playing 3 or 4 button hockey games like we did.

While I give credit to the "3's" mode that was added to recent versions of EA Sports NHL hockey games(fun novelty), I could never truly be converted.  I had a glimmer of hope that our "friends" at EA Sports would do us right with this NHL94 Rewind announcement.  Having a true living room experience from an official source on a timeless game engine was just what I wanted.  Don't get my wrong, I love the modding community, just turning on the PS4 and going without emulators, computers attached to PCs, or using flash carts is immediately appealing.  Unfortunately, at least for now it doesn't appear to be a stand alone product.  In addition, we've wanted an official source to play this classic game in a stable online setting.  I like many others have unfortunate technical issues with our current online solution that have kept me from doing the exis and league thing(This is no slight to anyone, as the support here is amazing).   In any other year, I may have been more forgiving about this exclusion, but given the ongoing Covid isolation that is killing the local tournament scene, not having a way to compete online is unforgivable.

I'm interested in when the people of this community bounced away from the annual EA cash grab releases, and bounced back to NHL94.  My return was based on the suggestion to run a tournament for this great game.  Very few sports games hold a special place in my heart.  Tecmo Bowl/Tecmo Super Bowl, the NBA Jam series of games, and NHL94 are the big three.   NHL94 just felt right for me.  The players perform on the ice as you'd expect them to, scoring isn't too difficult to figure out, and likewise, there seems to be a counter to most things.  When you lose, most of the time it's because you were outplayed.  I'm also a big fan of having two different mainstream versions that have their own +/- that = double the fun.

Thanks for letting me vent.  It's been a long year.

  6. I know this is a bit early and will rehash some thanks from this year's tournament, but I thought it would be a good time to put some thanks out there to buds who really deserve it.  I highly encourage folks to continue in this thread by thanking people that deserve recognition.  Believe me it's a good break from all this political nonsense in the world these days.  Good vibes buds!

This is in no particular order, and if I missed you, just know that you are no longer very important to me.  :D  J/K  Love ya buds!

@angryjay93 joined us for the 5th consecutive NHL94 tournament run by this group.  He now stands as the only player besides my son to do so.  He almost didn't make it to Barry Melrose Place in 2019, so the streak was in danger of being broken.   I've said it before, but without him taking a chance on making the journey, I don't think we would have seen the other traveling players we're accustomed to seeing.  You're great on the mic, and your online league participation helps feed online relevance all year long.

@IAmFleury'sHipCheck aka EA for making his 3rd tournament in a row, and for always being a great friend.  I'm touched each and every time I get a signed cartridge from everyone at our tournaments.  Normally, I would run into EA at least one or two other times a year during Chicago trips, but with the Pandemic that just hasn't happened this year.  I miss ya bud.

Nelson79, who has designed posters for several events, and continues to be a great friend.  While he couldn't make the trip to Minnesota, he continues to support the tournaments I run.

@hankthetank for making the trip with me to MN, and helping out so much with setup and teardown.

@kingraph for returning for the 3rd year in a row, again strengthening our reputation through positive association.  I believe you're the only player who has taken home hardware at every one of our tournaments!  Your skills on the mic are also tremendous, and it's always a pleasure calling games with you.  Your continued online presence keeps this community relevant.

@danTML7 and @seventieslord made a very long journey to Minneapolis from Regina, SK, and it was great having you.  Both contributed on the mic at the tournament.  While @seventieslord was a bit more lucid on the mics, it's @danTML7 who has stepped up in a major way with his frequent streams and exis, and overall NHL94 evangelism.  Despite the fun political banter Dan and I have on social media, he's tremendous for this community, and I truly enjoy interactions with him.

I'd like to thank @chaos for all he does with trying to get online working.  I unfortunately have had a really difficult time having quality games due to connection and lag skipping.  I am hoping to build a new PC sooner than later, and perhaps I'll be able to get back for at least some exis now and then.

@halifax for getting NHL94 recognized on a national scale through the TSN special, and for the work you did with @smozoma for the Sochel tournament.  I don't think I've seen the community grow as much since I've been here, in such a short amount of time.

I'd like to thank all of the first time players who made it out to Minnesota for the Edge tournament this year.  I can't thank you enough.  If you helped carry a box, tv, plug/unplug cables, during the event, I also thank you.

@mort1237 was a tremendous helper during the NHL94 tournament in Minneapolis this year.  He also played very well.  I know he's been through a lot this year, and I haven't seen him since the tournament.  I can't wait till I can hang out with him again.

@DPS has continued to support events I run, and he's just an awesome guy to be around.  He attended multiple Tecmo gatherings I put on this year in Green Bay, as well as the MN tournament.  He's pretty funny on the mic as well.

@jer_33 for returning from Thunder Bay, and just being a pleasure to be around.  He also took some time to grab photos of note.

@Scribe99 for making the event.  Hopefully next time you can do things on Friday night too.

Chris O(sorry can't remember handle) for flying in, and handling me in Genesis exis.  Next time we gotta get your bud from LA to push buttons with us.

@Votaw quietly made his 3rd straight appearance.  He's such a good dude, and I'm always glad to see him at these events.

Kevin Cabarello flying in from Columbus, instead of driving was really nice.  Green Bay was a long enough haul.  Dude is good people.

The Retro Sports Gamer has continued providing a platform for us that is suited to our audience.  His channel is widely recognized within the competitive retro sports gaming communities of Tecmo Super Bowl and NHL94.

@LeifErikson for the friendship, and overwhelming support this and last year.  For those of you who don't know, @LeifErikson was my #1 resource for making the Minnesota tournament happen this year.  His contributions are priceless.  I can't thank him enough for everything he did, leading up to, and during the tournament.  As many of you know, the lockdowns and Covid responses have been devastating to live events, and thus the industry in which he operates.  He's a remarkably adaptable and driven individual, that I believe would be successful no matter what he chose to do in life, or what life throws at him.

I'd like to thank the modders who take the time to create new roms.  I know NHL Rewind is going to be a thing, but I'll take my chances with what this community produces year in and year out.

Speaking of thanks, the 2v2 rom by @clockwise for our Edge tournament was a nice touch, putting many players names in the game.

@TecmoJon was nice to interact with during the Sochel tournament season.  I could see the many hours of support he put in helping people, and he was willing to get in some pickup games.  Despite the lag, he was one of the fewer players I could connect with and have a reasonably playable experience.

Thanks again to all, and I'm sorry if I missed someone worthy of recognition.  I long for us getting all getting together again when it's safe to do so.

    Thank you,

    -Trojan

I loved my trip to Green Bay.
It was the high point of my NHL 94 career.

Arguing with Trojan about my seeding and then promptly beating him in pre tourney exis
    Traveling and rooming with AJ
Pre-tourney games with Smoz, EA, Tex, AJ, and Jer
Beating Raph in an official tournament game of NHL'94
Post tourney 2v2 with Raph, AJ, Jer and Arda

#3 Make it Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
I'll be retired and totally free

#4 SNES was the big negative of my trip to Green Bay.
Huge waste of time and it screwed up the Gens tourney that most were there for.

    #5 See #3

You're a tough read bud.  :)  I could have sworn by the end of your initial review back in early 2018, that we had done a horrible job.

As you're probably aware, we moved SNES to the back end of the tournament the following year, and it ended up being a very competitive field filled with dedicated SNES players, who were also good at Genesis.

Nearly no one who travels to these things is willing or able to do that right now, and I don't blame them.  While we had a tremendous showing at our Green Bay Tecmo tournament in September, most of it from outside of the area.  Their thoughts/concerns regarding Covid risks were generally different than the masses chiming in here.(that's 100% ok)

I will be playing NHL94 with humans in the 1st quarter if 2021.  The unknown factor is whether or not it will be in a traditional tournament setting, or a smaller gathering.  My gut tells me that it won't be this time around.  I hope I'm wrong, but I'm not asking my friends to fly out if they don't feel safe about it.

1: Minneapolis is a fantastic city and I'm not opposed to it at all but I would obviously always prefer a wee bit closer to ole indiana. Totally selfish reasons for that.

2: My chances would go up because if I had to, I could make it a day trip.

3: I'm not big on sunday tournaments. I like to party a little during these things and that wouldn't go over too well with my employer Monday morning.

4: I don't play as much snes so my attendance is not based on snes at all. Whatever "extra" tourney you add on, I'll probably jump on and play.

5: Chicago would be great but again this is for very selfish reasons. People from out of town will have trouble finding more affordable lodging and what not, but there is a lot to do in chicago if you do have to stay.

6: Once you rollover into March I'm basically not going to make it to any tourney until june because of high school baseball season so february is ideal for me.

How many nicknames do you have Slapshot?

  9. image.png

We will make every effort to stay clear of King of 94's schedule for two reasons.  Common decency, and not wanting to put people in a tough spot where they'd have to make a choice between one or the other.  While I'm no Nostradamus, and I think our NHL94 tournament is awesome, I wouldn't expect anyone to choose us over KO94 in a tight scheduling window, unless they were regionally closer to us, or didn't have a passport.

The idea regarding the Sunday schedule would be to piggy back on our already well-populated Full Nelson Tecmo tournament in Green Bay, so we'd simply be expanding the weekend event we've been doing for the past three years to include Genesis.  Outside of Kevin Cab, Mort, DPS, and Angryjay, I can't think of anyone who has attended dedicated Tecmo events of ours, who also have competed in their event. This would not be intended to be a long term solution, and simply a bandage, that allows our group to gather in 2021, in what should be a better situation that what we're currently witnessing regarding Covid and other challenges in the world.

I know the future is difficult to predict, I'll make sure to communicate with @halifax and @smozomaregarding their KO94 2021 intentions before doing anything on my end, should it involve running a Summer/Fall event in 2021 that includes NHL94 on its schedule.

I appreciate the feedback folks, keep it coming.

*Caveat: I'm a rookie here and I have never attended a live tourney/event of any kind, so take my opinion with the Kilimanjaro-sized grain of salt that it deserves, but here goes:

Question #1 : I live in Chicago, so Minny is all good w/ me. I’ve been there a bunch over the past 10+ years and have gotten smashed there a bunch. Fun town, s**t tons of hotels/bars/restaurants, all good.

Question #2 : Again, I’m in Chicago, so Green Bay is easy for me too. But, if you could have all the f**king packers fans leave town for the weekend, that would be greeeeaaaaaat (just kidding, but Go BEARSSSS). Agree with @kingraphthat Minny is way more fun tho.

Question #3 : Yes it would affect things for sure. Saturday >>>>> Sunday (unless it’s a 3-day wknd, but that’s a whole other issue lol). Like raph said, jobs/kids need to go back to school, etc.on Mondays. Saturday is just so much easier to plan for and to get a hall pass from that woman who lives at my house.

Question #4 : I pretty much only play SNES these days (I know, I know, here is where you all throw rotten tomatoes and cabbage at me, you holding-down-the-button-to-be-the-goalie-motherfuckers). If it were only GENS, then I’d still try to show up if only just to meet people and put faces w/ names (and to drink the f**king town dry), but SNES would seal it for me. Even just a SNES 2v2 tourney on Saturday evening, after the liquid courage/social lubricant has been flowing for a while, would be entertaining (my opinion).

Question #5 : First off, @corbettkb's comment about never wanting to go back to DeToilet made me laugh (blow me, Red Wings) because, not including the MoTown catalogue of music/influences, that city is about as cool as a nuclear meltdown (no offense, of course). But after that, Chicago is obviously great from a "we have f**king everything you need here" standpoint, but it's a waaaaay better road trip destination than a fly-into destination. And that's coming from someone who lives here and who's basically a total homer about all things Chicago. The major airport is far from the city (it's more dealing with the f**king traffic than the distance from downtown that makes it annoying) and hotels are more expensive while offering less creature comforts (comparatively). But if you're not downtown than (or somewhat close to it) then what's the point?  There's nothing cool about partying in Rosemont, Illinois (again, no offense).

Question #6 : I have no real preference, but I'd lean towards Sept or April actually being better, because if I’m gonna travel in February then I wanna GTFO of Chicago and go somewhere nice and warm (can we hold this in New Orleans? Just kidding).

Question #6 : I know this wasn't an explicitly asked question, @Edge of '94 Midwest, but let me just say that your picture of the kid-sized Blackhawks goalie mask on the adult-sized head f**king rules! COVID or not, I give you a 8/10 and I definitely WOULD bang!

    DanK

Haha, that is what's known as a "fan mask".  Since I am enormous it looks awful, and for that I love it.

I appreciate the feedback everyone, please keep it coming.

  11. Now that the annual Full Nelson Tecmo event we run in Green Bay every Fall has concluded, the lidless, great eye of my attention shifts to other matters, including the future of this NHL94 tournament for 2021.  I continue to lean on the feedback of those who have attended our events, and have wanted to, but haven't been able to yet.

Help us make the EYE of Sauron on r/place! @ (666,666) : lotr

The general attitude of retro gamers, being willing to travel to events, varies per individual.  That isn't the point of this discussion, as most of those who do attend our NHL94 events have made it abundantly clear that circumstances surrounding mandatory quarantines, and risk of infection of Covid is not something they wish to navigate at this time.(That is 100% ok and we will leave it at that)  Please assume that these questions and discussion topics assume a timeframe/situation, when/where Covid/social unrest(IE protests/rioting) is no longer deterrents for tournament attendance and travel.

For those of you who attended our tournament at The Pourhouse this year, you know that just about everything went about as well as one could hope, minus perhaps a lighter attendance than we originally anticipated.  @LeifEriksondid a tremendous job supporting us, and made the event unforgettable.  I can't thank him enough.  The traveling contingent from this community was higher than any other tournament we've run, which means the local populace of Minneapolis and beyond was largely untapped.  This isn't intended to be a "look at me/us" post, but rather, acknowledge what went well so we may attempt build on it.

Reality check:  While I would certainly like to take everything that happened in 2020, and reproduce it in 2021 again, due to a number of factors, it might not be possible.  I need help in understanding what brought you out this year, in years past, and what would bring you out in the future.   Please understand that any change regarding a 2021 event is meant for that event alone, and then as always, we will reevaluate our options moving forward.  Again, this is assuming Covid, political unrest, etc. are no longer a considerable deterrent.

Question #1 : Is the Minneapolis geographic location(not venue/hotel specific) a draw or deterrent to your attendance?  Please explain why.  For the record, we think Minneapolis is awesome.  :)

Question #2 : If the tournament had to be held back in Green Bay for 2021(venue would be completely different from years' past),  would that change your decision to attend?  Please explain why.  For the record, flights to GB this year have been much less expensive, and have had better transfer schedules vs just two years ago when booked with reasonable advance.  While this wouldn't be our first choice, it has served us well in the past.  It's Trojan's hometown, which means lots of cross pollination with Tecmo players.

Question #3 : If the tournament was held early on a Sunday(say 10AM instead of a Saturday) , would that affect your decision to attend?  Again, please explain why.(See question #6 for reasoning on why this might be a good option for us here)

Question #4 : The SNES experience was added in 2018 in attempt to bring out the SNES players to the mix from afar, and peaked in 2019 with the inclusion of players from Elmhurst.  These players did not make the journey to Minneapolis in 2020, which greatly all but eliminated the dedicated SNES base. If the tournament removed the SNES experience, in order to expand on the Genesis experience(either through additional GENS games, or adding a 2v2 experience), would that affect your decision to attend?  Again, please explain how and why.

Question #5 : If Minneapolis and Green Bay are not good fits for your attendance, would another Midwest geographical location present a higher chance of your attending, IE, Milwaukee, Chicago, Detroit, ETC ?  Please specify said alternative, and why you think it would be a better fit.

Question #6 : If the 2021 tournament was held later than February, say either in April or May, or combined with our Full Nelson Tecmo event in early September of 2021(Thus the idea for a Sunday event), how would that affect your ability/desire to attend?  Those traveling in to GB already for Full Nelson might stick around for some additional retro gaming for the weekend.  We are aware that King of 94 tends to happen in that general time of year, so we would be sensitive to the timing of their needs before making any decisions in that respect.  In 2016 we held our first ever tournament in September, and if memory serves King of 94 didn't take place that year.

I can't thank you enough for all the support dating back to 2016 shown by this community.  I sincerely hope I can see more of your faces in 2021.  Thanks in advance for your feedback and understanding during this very weird time in our world.

  12.

I hope everyone is doing well. Normally about this time of year, we'd be dipping our toes in the waters of tournament planning. Lord knows it's awesome when people can gather, break bread, and enjoy a common activity.

For us, NHL94 isn't just an activity, it's a passion, one that many of you share, and that's why exist. We exist to share that passion with others. We know each and every weekend is a valuable commodity, and we're honored every time one of you decides to spend it with us at our NHL94 tournaments.

It is our heart's desire to hold an event in 2021. We want to see everyone's smiling faces, hear the sirens wail, and see the lamps lit. That being said, there are many hurdles in place that must be overcome before we can do so.

Our tournament regulars much be willing AND able to attend. Right now there are barriers to this. Right now for our Canadian friends, any trip here requires an automatic two week quarantine, which means lost wages or worse.

Consumer confidence matters. In this case, the overwhelming majority of players that have been part of the last event are not ready to take the risk of attending a live event. No confidence = no travel = low numbers = defeats the purpose of having the event.

We hope that circumstances will improve, and that we'll be able to hold an event worth attending in 2021. That being said, we're not ignorant to the fact that countless other notable retro gaming events did not take place in 2020.

What we ask for is time and understanding, as circumstances develop. Realistically we may not have a decision in 2020 made yet, but most likely we will wait until after the November presidential elections before making any major announcements.

Hopefully we can make a Belfour/Roy-esque save before we have to bench the tournament for a year.

While it's not the same, obviously there are online avenues on this site to get your dose of nostalgia.

We appreciate the continued support, and we can't wait until we can see you in person!

    Thanks,

    -Trojan

  13. I empathize greatly with my friends over on the East Coast who have experienced a lot of isolation and and frustration this year.  I am so grateful that we were able to do what we did, when we did it.  At current, things are much different here in Wisconsin outside of Milwaukee.  Time will tell if we can pull off something worth holding.

As most of our player base is a long distance traveling one, knowing where you guys stand is quite important, and I thank you for the frank feedback.  I'll continue to poke my head into here as things develop in the world.

I do appreciate each and every one of you who has been a contributor/participant this year, and in years past.  We will reunite again, eventually.

Sorry this is a long post, but there is a lot to get to.

Well it's hard to believe, but it's been nearly 6 months since the Modano Mo Problems NHL94 tournament in Minneapolis at the Pourhouse Uptown!  In some ways it feels like yesterday, and in others it feels like it was 2 years ago.  So much has changed regarding public events, how they're viewed by the public, and the general risk associated with having them.  This view varies depending on where you are, and how hard Covid has hit your respective communities.

It's very hard to tell the future, but here are my wishes for 2021.  These are not statements of what is going to happen necessarily, but if I had to jot down my wants/wishes, here's what we'd see:

    1) The tournament happens in Minneapolis, hopefully in the same venue(Pourhouse Uptown) and hotel(The Moxy)

    2) The tournament expands the traveling player base, as well as the local Minnesotan base, while retaining most if not all of the traveling players from 2020.  I would like to break through the 40 player mark in 2021.

    3) The tournament sees a surge of dedicated SNES or hybrid SNES/Genesis players to see competition like we saw in 2019.  When we moved a good contingent of SNES players did not follow us from Green Bay to Minneapolis.  Discussions revolving around expanding the Genesis experience and dissolving the SNES tournament have been brought to the forefront.

    4) I'd see more people in town early enough Friday night at Moxy for a more focused task for Genesis 2v2 experience.

    5) I'd like to have the tournament in a similar time frame as last year, but at the very least have it in the first four months of 2021 before youth sports start stealing parents away.

    6) I'd like to be able to have the tournament in a climate where things like mask wearing is no longer necessary

There are more granular things that come to mind, but these are big wants.

I already have run a smaller Tecmo event in 2020, and have a larger one(Tecmo) coming up in September.  Some precautions have been taken, but we've ultimately put the risk factor of being around other individuals in the hands of the players.  Some are traveling from afar, and have been in relative isolation.  Howard, WI also has a very low infection rate, as it isn't very densely populated.  Public transportation really isn't a thing there, and most people drink outside in the Summer in public.  No one reported Covid positive from that tournament.

The risk/action factor varies per person.  I'm not here to preach to you the pros or cons of attending a tournament in the midst of our social climate at this time.  I'm asking you what important things need to happen to get you to book a flight, or hop in a car to be around a bunch of community members for a couple of days.  To be clear, these are more in line with Covid or political climate concerns, and less about the tournament format itself.

Examples could be any of the following or something else entirely:

City must be able easy to get to from a flight standpoint

Venue location must not be densely populated or have Covid numbers at x% per day

Venue must require/must not require masks

New daily Covid cases need to be on the decline for x many days/weeks before I'd commit

Venue must be private in nature instead of public

Tournament must be held in (insert date range here)

While I doubt I can please everyone, knowing where you concerns remain will help understand what conditions I have to strive towards to continue into our 6th tournament.(I can't believe we've been doing this for that long already).

Thanks for your help in this very unusual process.  Please come with respect in case you see something you don't agree with coming from another poster.  Some of these concerns have been known to start fights, and that's not what we're trying to do here.  Everyone is entitled to their opinions/objections.  It's my job to try and navigate them and act accordingly.

    Thanks again,

  15. The Model 3 is an official clone console if that makes sense.  It was licensed by Sega, but produced by a 3rd party, and even had its own 6 button controller complete with autofire options.  It works with the 1st party 3/6 button controllers.  It lacks the ability to work with the add on consoles like the Sega CD, but is region free, meaning you play foreign carts with it.  It's very light and doesn't take up much space.  I have either 2 or 3 of them, and they work great for tournaments.  My major complaint is that due to their lack of weight, they are prone to moving.

I run the Edge of 94 Midwest annual tournament.  We use all 3 models of Genesis, with CRT displays, but use Analogue's Mega SG FPGA console for the main stream setup, which plays in glorious HD with no scaling lag.

I'm not aware of any relevant tournaments using emulators for local tournament play, but obviously that's how the community does online leagues and tournaments.
