  1. Mmm Cup Chase III EDIT: Logan asked me about this when he posted it - I'm not sure what to say but I'm fairly certain this won't off the ground in the format that he has proposed. It's just too complicated, the cycles are too short, and Cup Chase has failed twice before with simpler systems. So I will make a post about options because I truly believe that, aside from me running a league, Cup Chase is the best way to bring in newbs. 1) Classic Cup Chase: I wish I could find the page that had the last standings of this competition, or I had archived it. Tickenest either spearheaded it or gave me the information I needed to try and revive it. It was very basic: Every week there was a "1 vs. 2" match to decide the champion, a "3 vs. 4" match to decide the first challenger, and a series of other matches to decide the next week's "3 vs. 4" participants. This thing lasted like a month before ending. Matches were best-of-3, host picks teams and opponent picks which one they want to be. 2) Cup Chase II: Which was basically in the same vein, but I added a bunch of rules to allow people to play matches that weren't scheduled, and the "3 vs 4" was a pool. This lasted maybe two weeks - you can go to the forum for it. 3) OCRCL Fall 2006: You're not going to find this, but it was the league extension of a recurring chess tournament that I ran for two years before coming to this site. OCRCL tournaments (in the format that I do leagues here) were the most successful, but this thing lasted for a little while. Every week, I assigned each player two opponents - they could also play an added opponent in a "riskmatch" or "bonusmatch" in order to get some more points. This was tedious because I had added rules to prevent rematches in too short of a timeframe, and I had to set the schedule every Sunday night...this would be a requirement in any tournament/league/series of this type anyways, so that's not the biggest deal, and I actually enjoyed doing this (but found almost no way to make games feel relevant). 4) Staggered tournaments: This is the last thing I suggested to Logan before he went to bed tonight...here's how it'd work: We'd play some sort of tournament, whether it is single-elim, psuedo-round-robin, etc...but once the tournament gets to, say, the semis, the next tournament begins. All semifinalists get a bye into the next tournaments quarterfinals, and the champ gets a bye into the next tournament's semis or something. The cycles for this one should probably be like 2 weeks, with a pool/league half lasting 2 weeks and a bracket lasting 2 weeks. EDIT: I just conjured up something that is very much like CC2 - But requires at least 10 players and would only really thrive with 15 or more active. I think that's the big issue - it's a noble undertaking but it just doesn't feel important enough to play.
  2. I have a ROM that I am working on that, ideally, would not discriminate between forwards and defensemen, and instead your team is 5 skaters. Is there any way to do this and still have a 5-on-5 rom?
  3. I tried to make a league with Offsides ON and Penalties OFF (hacking was required)...this actually turned out not-so-bad, and if I ran another league I would want to do it again.
  4. How long is overtime after someone scores?Or is it an issue of pulling a guy off or something and the game makes it 5-on-4? There IS 5-on-3 in NHL OT, btw.
  5. It's kinda interesting because the stufff you usually wouldn't see in International tournaments tended to be allowed during the World Cups - it was a lot more like hardcore NHL playoff hockey (and remember the timeframe of the tournament both times as well). That's my one cent.
  6. Thanks again for taking care of this baby, Statto. And a here-here for Phoenix - if an Arizonan like yourself wants the team out, that's gotta be a notch in the column for Balsillie.
  7. AspireOne? I got mine yesterday too Nice to finally be mobile AND relatively up-to-date. I was on a 9-year old machine up until 3:00 pm yesterday.
  8. Do you want to have permanent partners for each and every player? Here's what I'd do if not... Even teams, no home-ice advantage, etc etc. Every matchup is going to be 3 games between 4 people, with one player being the "host" team (in the case below, that's habs): Game 1: clock+shaft @ redwing+habs Game 2: clock+redwing @ shaft+habs Game 3: redwing+shaft @ clock+habs If there are no ties, one team will go 3-0 OR one team will go 0-3 (although this doesn't particularly matter that much, I'd give out one point for a win and nothing else). 5 players = 12-game season 7 players = 60-game season 9 players = 168-game season 10 players = 252-game season Notice that it skyrockets the more players there are - I'd put 7 in each league to keep things manageable. I also would go capitalism style - just set a deadline and the most active players will be the ones that end up with the best records, giving 1 point for a win and tiebreakers for ties. Assign each team an even number of "home" series in the schedule. I have NO idea exactly how to do that, but good luck sire I don't really know what to do for playoffs...maybe a single series? However, the incentive for the 0-2 team to tank in game 3 is incredibly high if they are in a "must-lose" situation (which game 3 would be), but that would make for some intriguing scenarios...the player with the lead must win game 3 completely on their own, with a partner who is trying to lose...

Make sure that you play Extra Innings with one of us online (I have it and would be up for a game). The CPU is idiotic and on offense you have mega-advantages: 1. You can leg out a single off of anything that looks like an infield ground-out because the ball is thrown so slowly. 2. This also means that singles can easily turn into doubles and stealing 2nd is pretty easy. 3. The fielders don't run so any doubles usually turn into inside-the-park homers. 4. Probably best to use the giant stadium
  10. Because it always seems to be the same people winning all the time (cough AJ carse cough), I think competitive NHL94 should be a drinking game, and always play a 7-game series. When you score a goal, you take a shot. When you win a game, you take a shot. Simple enough, although hokkee will probably have a bit of an advantage, as well as anyone who can win 2-1 or 3-2 pretty easily, or convince their opponent to beat them 20-0 in a single game. Alcohol strategy FTW!
  11. The first Gens Capitalism League went in the Summer. Some great stuff there...I'd probably go with a full season. Maybe for people that are taking a season off (like me, I suppose...not like I think I'll be coming back in fall), half of our players can be lost to the draft and the other half can go "on loan" for the season.
  12. Yeah I'd like to play a few games for my country Not too many, but a few.
  13. Back to the OP: the clear favorite is GENS, for it's flow of play and general mechanics. However, SNES has a few things going for it (shaft explained them above). If GENS had a goalie button and defensive control (in short, used the six-button pad or SNES pad), this would be no contest, hands-down Genesis, we wouldn't even be talking about the SNES version. SNES doesn't have the flow or the graphical fluidity of the GENS version, and "the move" works at a higher rate than in the GENS version. They ARE different games though - you just need to try them both out to see which one you prefer.
