  4. Online Handicapped Playoff League tl;dr - do you want to join a 16 team playoff bracket where you have max 7 days to complete each series using Genesis over RetroArch only that starts Wednesday April 1? If YES, reply here to indicate interest or DM me on Discord (danTML7#0996), and I’ll update the list of players as we go. If you want to know the details, read on past this point. There’s been some clamor going on lately about people wanting to do an online tournament because we are all stuck at home, quarantined, and we can’t do in-person events. Leagues also can be troublesome to connect with 12+ different people to get your matches in. Thus I came up with an idea to create a 16-person bracket and attempt to seed players/teams based on skill and readjust each “season” depending on how a player did in the previous tournament. Basically the strongest players take the weakest teams, and vice versa and readjust as we go. Here’s how it will work: Step 1: indicate interest in participating in this. When you do so, you agree that you can play up to 4 series with max 7 games in the next 3-6 weeks. I will start with the first 8 to indicate interest will get in. If we pass 8, then we will expand to 16. If we pass 16, we will shoot for 32 in which case there will be 6 duplicates (3 on each side) so highly unlikely to meet in the final. Step 2: I will post the player list and what tier you have been assigned based on your skill level. Skill level will be determined based on my prior knowledge, your DMs to me suggesting where you should be, your win/loss % online, your most recent league play, the world live rankings, etc. Remember, it readjusts anyway, so if you do poorly in Pilot season, you will move up a tier next round. Step 3: You have 24 hours to contact me with your preferred order of team selection in that tier. I will do my best to get you the team you want the most. In subsequent years, you will likely not get the same team. If you don’t contact me with a team order, you will just be randomly assigned a team in that tier. If two people have a team in same tier as their #1 choice, a coin flip decides it. The Sega tiers are as follows: Tier 1: DET, BUF CHI, VAN Tier 2: MTL, LA, CGY, WPG, BOS Tier 3: QUE, DAL NYR, TOR Tier 4: PHI, EDM, WSH, PIT Tier 5: NJD, STL, HFD, NYI Tier 6: TB, SJ, OTW, ANH, FLA Step 4: I send the matches to Chaos and he gets them set up on the site. You then have 1 week to complete your matches. If we all complete them in 1 day, the next round starts immediately and we have 1 week from that new date to complete. No exceptions will be made. Please connect through Discord through PM and find your playing partner. Try to finish the series in one sitting unless time constraints force it to be split. Upload matches immediately to the website. ***If I could request that everyone withholds their feedback until after the end of the tournament so that we can let it all play out and then review how it can be made better. I welcome and appreciate all feedback and will take it under consideration in my discussions with other league admins to improve it. Hopefully this should be something that can keep us all busy playing meaningful games to help us get through COVID isolation and lack of NHL playoffs*** FAQ - Q: Why don’t you do a team draft? - With 16 teams and a large skill gap between the elite and casual players, an elite player with a 16th ranked team isn’t at enough of a disadvantage to fully balance it out. The goal of this tournament is parity. We want each series to go to as close to 7 games as possible and be balanced. Nobody should go into any series knowing full well that they are going to definitely lose. This may mean some elite players lose early, but could still go on to win the loser’s bracket. Q: What will the bracket look like? 1 TAMPA BAY HARTFORD 2 16 CHICAGO DETROIT 15 7 NEW YORK R DALLAS 8 10 MONTREAL LOS ANGELES 9 5 QUEBEC TORONTO 6 12 BOSTON CALGARY 11 3 PHILADELPHIA PITTSBURGH 4 14 BUFFALO WINNIPEG 13 After round 1, the round 1 8 losers will go into B pool as well so everyone person gets at least 2 series each time we run this league. We will re-seed round 2 with top seed playing bottom, and the two middles playing. THESE SERIES WILL BE BEST OF 7 WITH THE HIGHER SEED GETTING 2 AT HOME, THEN 2 AWAY, THEN HOME, AWAY, HOME TO FINISH. Q: How will you seed the balanced teams? - For future seasons, we’ll have a better idea, but for this Pilot season, me and a couple other admins will try to handicap and see the player/team combos. Some may be randomized or just “luck of the draw”. Don’t read too much into it if you are seeded worse than you think you should be. Just prove us wrong! Q: How do you select players for subsequent years? How do they move up and down? - All players who join pilot will be asked back for the second season. After that, a waitlist will be kept so if someone wants to back out and let someone else try, they can do that, or if they miss a week, we get a replacement coach to take over. Q: Which ROM does this league use? - We will use the same ROM used in the “rolling lines” league. This means it’s the classic ROM, with the only exception of 1-minute penalties instead of the regular 2-minute. There will be no line changes, and follow all other etiquette of normal league rules. Q: How do you re-balance after the Pilot season? - The four teams that lost two series will move UP a tier. If you are at tier 1, you will remain at tier 1. The four teams who go to the semi-finals will move down a tier. Everyone else will remain in their tier. Q: What happens if you get interest from 32 people? - Then we will do our best to create two completely even brackets of 16. Open registration begins Monday March 30th at 11am EST, or after all the people below have indicated in or out. 5. I know it's always been an issue of having people complete their league games in a specified amount of time, especially meeting checkpoints. There's nothing specific that brought this up, I just know it was an issue when I first played here in 2007 and it appears to be an issue that continues today. What are your thoughts about having league checkpoints that could be incentive based? Classic for example, each coach is to complete 8 games per week. 1st person to log 8 games that week = 3 pts 2nd = 2 pts 3rd = 1 pt Each week follows the same formula. At the end of the season, the person with the highest number of pts receives 3 draft picks higher in the following Classic league, 2nd gets 2 draft picks higher, 3rd gets 1 draft pick higher. I haven't thought through the numbers but just wanted to get some discussion going around what the community thinks about incentive based checkpoints. If you think it's a bad idea, that's fine. If not, share some feedback or even better, other ideas.
  6. Hey guys, just wanted to know if anyone had any thoughts on when a new season is going to start up?
  7. This thread is for information, questions, and answers about the NHL'94 World Cup Tournament I want to set up (Genesis version). To sign up: to keep things organized, please use the Signup thread. The first thing I should get out of the way: this World Cup tournament has nothing to do with countries. It's just set up in the same way as the Soccer World Cup: Qualifying stage (August?) Group stage (September?) Tournament stage (October?) We'll play with either the original ROM or a weight-bug-fixed and goalie-control-button ROM. In each stage you qualify for, you'll play against 3-4 other coaches in best-of-7 series. In each stage of the tournament, you can only play with each team (CHI, DET, etc) for one game, so selecting your team for each game becomes critical to your success. I don't know how many people will sign up, so I can't give exactly how it will work, but here's the idea if there are 32 coaches. Qualifying Stage Coaches play against 3 other randomly-selected coaches in best-of-7 series. They must use a different team for each game. 3 x best-of-7 = max 21 teams used. Coaches receive +20 pts per series win, +10 pts per game win, -10 pts per game loss, +1pt per goal for, -1pt per goal against. Instead of +/- per goal, might base the goal portion of your points based on your ratio of goals for and against (so as not to penalize coaches who go for low-scoring games). After all the games are done, all the coaches are ranked by their points total. The coaches are then distributed into 4-team groups for the Group stage, in such a way that the groups have roughly the same skill distributions, so the groups are relatively fair (unlike the soccer World Cup!). I may make use of the "Power Ranking" formula I used on the Blitz website that rates coaches based on who they played against and how well those teams did (so if you played against coaches who did well, you get extra points to make up for having a tough set of randomly-selected opponents). Group Stage Works the same as the Qualifying stage, except your opponents aren't random, they're based on the results of the Qualifying stage. I may remove the complicated scoring system and simply go to series wins/losses to avoid problems. Then we'd need tie-breakers, which could be game wins/losses difference and then goals for/against ratio or difference. Like the world cup, the top two teams from each group move on to the Tournament! Tournament Stage At this point, we'll have 16 teams left, who play a tournament until there is a winner. We could do it like the soccer World Cup where the bracket is pre-defined, or we could use some kind of re-seeding for each round, maybe based on Qualifying + Group stage points. As in the other stages, you can't reuse teams during this stage. With 16 coaches, it takes 4 series to win the Tournament, which would be 28 games. That's more games than there are teams (no, you can't use the All Stars ). So we'd have to turn the first round into best-of-5, so it's 5+7+7+7 = All 26 teams. Or we'd reset the team restriction after the 2nd or 3rd round. Eventually someone wins the NHL'94 World Cup! Scheduling For each matchup, I (or someone else) will start a group forum conversation with the two coaches to encourage them to schedule a time to play. Breaking a scheduled time could result in an automatic loss, but I hope it won't come to that. During the first two stages, you'll have a month to play 3 series -- it shouldn't be hard! Additional Ideas Just ideas at this point, not incorporated into the tournament, yet. Have the World Cup hosted on the NHL'94 site so there are stats, and to help keep track of points and which teams you can play with. If Qualifying and Group stages depend on games won/lost and goals for/against, having stats could help prevent lying about game results to help points totals. We could add a geographic component to the World Cup by arranging the Groups based on coach location. Wouldn't want to do it that way every tournament, though. In the Finals for the World Cup, reset the coachs' teams so they can use the best teams and to make the final not depend on how hard it was to get to the final. To avoid the 28-game problem in the Tournament, actually force the finalists to use All Stars East and All Stars West for the first two games of the series. Potential Problems Playoffs in leagues always seem to take forever because things need to be done in order. The Tournament stage could be very slow. During the Qualifying and Group stages, people may delay playing against someone in order to better control the teams they have left to play with. Possible solutions: Predefine the order coaches must play in. But a predefined order could make it take a very long time to complete these stages. Instead of having to not reuse any teams during whole stages, just make it so you can't reuse a team during each series. This is sort of boring, though, because it'llbe an endless cycle of CHI, DET, MTL… Combined with solution 2.: For each series, have a randomly-generated list of 10-15 teams that neither coach can play with. Lying/colluding to improve ranking points. Potential solutions: Having to upload games would help prevent this. Even if the site isn't sophisticated and simply lists all the uploaded games (features such as ranking points could be calculated manually initially and only added to the site later if the tournament is a success). If you've been watching the World Cup, you may have noticed that the final Group stage games are played at the same time -- this is to help avoid teams changing how they play based on the other games' results. So the final games of the Qualifying and Group stages could be reported in secret until all of them are done. If you'd like to sign up, use the Signup thread!
  8. The Forum Member Sim League (FMS League) is looking for players! The Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs are looking to draft members from the NHL94 forum to participate in a simulated league. Each team will consist of 6 forum members and compete in a four week long season. Games will be simmed by me in cpu vs cpu demo games. Team and forum member stats will be tracked and posted. The top four teams will compete in a postseason for the Stanley Cup. Participation is very easy. Simply reply in this thread that you would like to join the league. In your reply, please list in order the most desired position you’re interested in to the least desired. Available positions are Center, Winger, Defenseman and Goalie. Each team will draft forum members and assign them to positions. Forum members will then take on attributes of the top available players from the EA NHL 94 league roster. Do you and five other of your fellow forum members have what it takes to win the Stanley Cup? Sign up today!
  9. Season 2 begins! All the information you need is below. First, there is a website to keep everything centralized (thanks again Google!): https://sites.google...survivorleague/ I recommend you bookmark it. There you can click on your name to log your scores, see standings, available teams, etc. Each person has a unique link that will open up directly to their page. How to log scores is explained in detail at the end of this post. We have two divisions of 7 this season: East Division (forum name/aim) Alonzi41/509260736@facebook.ao batbl18/batbl18 Bo Knows NHL94/BoKnowsNHL94 dcicon5148/dcicon5148 IceStorm70/IceStormNHL94 KingRaph/KingRaph RedWingDevil/Iceguy94 East Division (forum name/aim) da94wookiee/Kedzie92 Dragon/Pearate Freydey/Freydey32 Houli/Houly8 kupuck19/kupucknhl94 minpind/minpind Plabax/Plabax You can download and import the buddy list here if you haven't done so already: Survivor Buddy List 1. I'm using AIM 7.5.14.8 2. Go to Options --> AIM --> Load Buddy List 3. Load the buddy list you downloaded, but DO NOT check the "Replace my existing Buddy LIst..." box or else it will overwrite your entire buddy list. You will then have a new Group called "Survivor" with the 14 people in the league. The ROM can be downloaded here: Survivor_S02.bin It's important that everyone configure GENS for 6-buttons or else you will desynch immediately. You don't need to actually use a 6-button controller. You can use 3 and map x,y,z to your keyboard. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes on ROM updates: 1. Weight Bug: Weight is the main attribute that determines checking ability and resistance. In the Classic ROM for Genesis, it's BACKWARDS so that lighter guys (Fleury, Gilmour, Roenick) are monster checkers and the larger guys (Lindros, Lemiuex, Bourque) are feathers. Hence the weight "bug". This ROM fixes that nasty bug, so heavy guys are meant to check like they are supposed to! (Thank you smozoma!) 2. Goalie Control "Y" Button Hack The original ROM only uses 3 buttons and to gain control of the goalie, you have to hold "B" down for a second or so. This ROM now uses a 6-button controller configuration, where the "Y" button will automatically switch to goalie control. No delay! NOTE: It's important to configure your GENS for 6-button controller, even if you are using 3 (map the other buttons to keyboard), or else you will immediately desynch when playing. (Thank you clockwise!) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RULES Standard Classic League rules -- 5 min periods, no line changes, penalties on (except offsides). Each coach can use up to 1 home and 1 away game with any of the 26 teams to complete their regular season. Once you use a team, you can no longer use them again for the regular season. This is commonly referred as a "survivor" format. Tracking of available teams will be done automatically (see below). Away team chooses their team first, and the home team picks second. Home always has the final choice of their team. POINTS/STANDINGS 2 points for a win, 1 point for a tie. No points for OT loss. Standings based on points, followed by GFA - GAA. DNPs (if necessary) will be treated as 0-0 ties, but no points awarded. SCHEDULE/PLAYOFFS You play everyone in your division 4 times, and everyone in the other division 2 times. That's a total of 38 games. Checkpoints will be based on the average number of games played each week. If you're significantly below average, you will be warned. Fall too far back and you may be replaced. Deadlines & remaining schedule will be posted at some point during the season. Playoffs * 8 teams make the playoffs - Division winners are the #1 & #2 seed - Division runner-ups are the #3 and #4 seed - Next 4 across both divisions make up the #5 - #8 seeds * Division winners start playoffs with all teams available - #3 & #4 seeds will have 3 teams unavailable for playoffs - #5 & #6 seeds will have 5 teams unavailable for playoffs - #7 & #8 seeds will have 6 teams unavailable for playoffs * Unavailable teams will be the ones that finish 2,4,6,8,10,&12 at the end of the season team standings: - #3 & #4 seeds will not have the 2,4,& 6 available - #5 & #6 seeds will not have 2,4,6,8,&10 available - #7 & #8 seeds will not have 2,4,6,8,10,&12 available Best of 7 series LOGGING SCORES Let's say I played my first game with LA Robbie, I was the home team, and I used DAL and he used VAN. Final score was DAL 3 VAN 8. Since I was home, I am responsible for inputting the score. First I click the link to get to the document (to be provided when season starts) "A" I find and click on my coach sheet, KingRaph. You will also see your coach name displayed on the top. Anything I need to input will be shaded green. I find my game against Robbie and click on my home team selection ( . Clicking the little arrow will bring up a list of my available home teams to use. I choose DAL, then click on the cell to input my score of 3. I repeat the process for the away team (Choose VAN, 8). That's it!!! You'll notice after you input the scores, the cells are no longer green. The records, stats, and standings will automatically be updated (may take up to 5 minutes to be updated on published website), and the list of available teams will also be updated. You see that I no longer have DAL available as a home team to use ( C ) When Robbie looks at his screen, he will see the away game results and he will no longer have VAN to use as an away team. There is also an "opponent frequency" field which will track what teams your opponents use against you.
  10. Welcome to the Survivor League Season 2 Sign Up and Information Thread! This season will be very similar to the inaugural season, with the following changes: Weight bug fixed ROM (thanks smozoma!), instead of classic. Goalie Control "Y" button hack! (thanks clockwise!) All 26 teams available to use (1 home and 1 away), instead of a randomely chosen set. Penalties for not finishing games in the regular season. You will lose an "x" number of teams available in the playoffs (if you make it) for missing regular season games. How many teams you lose, for how many games, and what teams you lose have not yet been determined…I'll figure it out soon. It's meant as an extra incentive to finish up your regular season. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: 1. Weight Bug Explanation: Weight is the main attribute that determines checking ability and resistance. NOTE: It's important to configure your GENS for 6-button controller, even if you are using 3 (map the other buttons to keyboard), or else you will immediately desynch when playing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The ROM can be downloaded here: Survivor_S02.bin The information below is based on a 20-person league, and can be subject to change depending on how many people sign up. OVERVIEW 36 game regular season using the survivor season 02 ROM (weight bug fixed with goalie button). 2 divisions of 10 teams Top 7 in each division make playoffs, with division winner getting 1st round bye. "Survivor" style -- you can only use 1 home and 1 away game for each of the 26 teams. Automated Google Docs for logging scores and automatic standings update (see below) REGISTRATION Reply to this thread! There are no plans for an "A" and "B" league, so this will be open to everyone. If your opponent is a stronger player, try to use your best team available and hope he uses a weaker team. OR, go ahead and use a weak team and take the loss! Pick your strategy!
