smozoma
randomness is in a big slump! first 13 games: 2/13 = 15.4% next 14 games: 8/14 = 51.7% last 9 games: 2/9 = 22.2% total: 12/36 = 33.3% The expected value at this time is 36*0.6 = 21.6. Four people are ahead now! However, only clockwise has been able to overcome the house's cut, and would be up an astounding $2.69 at this point (with 1$ bet on each game). shaftman
I noticed you guys were talking about the ball... anyone notice when they kick the ball really hard? It looks like it has some kind of weird force field around it..? cause of how it spins I think. Maybe its the t.v..

There were lots of goals missed when shot from a long distance. It should have been thoroughly tested before the tournament.
halifax
Wow incredible....I was following both games. England wins 1-0 over slovenia which meant the americans had to win their game. Earlier in the american game it looked like they got ripped off on a goal so there might be some controversy if it ended in a tie. Once the England game was over, I switched over to the american game and the americans score seconds later in extra time to win the game and put them through to the next round. Amazing! Never thought I would be so pumped to see the States score a goal but it was really an incredible moment, (and I do have them in some pools). They thoroughly deserved to move on, especially after that phantom call in the Slovenia game, and the incorrect offside call in this one. Yes we can. England was a better than their last game but they still don't look anywhere close to being contenders. Though, if you keep improving game to game you might find yourself peaking at the most crucial time.

If turn off the 120Hz processing, the effect goes away. The TV is trying to draw extra frames to smooth out the motion, but it's screwing up and creating 'artifacts' ahead of and behind the ball. smozoma
5 people beat the expected value (28.8), but no one made any money! With 48 games, you'd need more than 32 points to have made any money. My random picks got 37.5% right (more than expected), but only 23.233 points (less than expected). It seems to me that the odds for the favourites are too low. If you bet all ties, you'd have had 37.633 points. If you bet all underdogs, you'd have had 37.075 points. If you bet all favourites, you'd have won 13.147 points. France's implosion skewed things a bit, giving underdogs 4.85 points.
smozoma
Oh wait.. To actually find out if you would have made any money, you need to also add 1.00 points for each time you got a game right. I got 18 games right and 23.233 points, for a total of 41.233. There were 48 games, so I lost $6.766 if I spent $1 on each game.

smozoma
I think it's time for video replay 2 games ruined by bad calls in one day Edited June 27, 2010 by smozoma
Grayto
Indeed. It's absolutely stupid that they don't, especially in the World Cup. Apparently FIFA's reasoning against it would that it would impede the flow of the game, which of course is ridiculous. A goal stops play anyway, add to that excessive celebrations, or players arguing the goal (the 1st Tevez goal took 2 minutes to restart), cynical fouls, time wasting, and faking injuries. Soccer is played on a continuous clock anyway, unlike all other sports that have implemented replay, there are very few goals in a game, and hardly any of them are contestable. The point is getting it right, and doing what's fair. You're seriously not going to check a goal in a game that ends 1-0 because it might ruin the flow of the game? (which it won't). Balls. (by the way I'm an Argentina supporter, so I'm in no way being biased here)
RedWingDevil
Even one of our analysts said that soccer is still at the stone age where technology is concerned. There might have been a huge change if both calls had been sustained. No excuse the rest of the way, though.
