I guess you guys need to watch connolly play consistently (like 70 games a season) to understand what type of player he has become. He turned himself into a very good PK however is offense just went down the crapper. if you want a PK for 4.5M and sprnkle in very inconsistent O, then you got what u wanted.

Joke of the day :

Capitals acquire a first round pick in 2012 and a second round pick in 2012 or 2013 from the Avalanche for Semyon Varlamov.

Word - the Capitals could not have dreamed such a golden deal to get rid of Varlamov. Neuvirth is far better, Varlamov is good and has had his moments, but he has also been injury plagued in the NHL at least having to sit out 2-3 times during the season this year and last. Is he give up your first round draft pick good? No.

toronto made a good trade for lombardi and franson, not sure why lombardi keeps getting moved around ,hes super fast and has a scoring touch

Lombardi played 2 games last season. Bad concussion. The real target of the deal is Cody Franson, and I guess Lombardi is more a salary cap and risk dump (3.5M/yr I think, plus possible concussion issues).

Anyone know why Richard's deal isn't considered salary cap circumvention?

Check it out:

9 years,

age 31: $12,000,000 + 2,000,000 signing bonus

age 32: $12,000,000 + 8,000,000 signing bonus

age 33: $9,000,000

age 34: $8,500,000

age 35: $8,500,000

age 36: $7,000,000

age 37: $1,000,000

age 38: $1,000,000

age 39: $1,000,000

signing bonuses don't go on the salary cap. that's BS.

non-bonus total: $60M / 9yr = $6.667M/yr

including bonuses, it would be $70M / 9yr = $7.778M/yr

How can his salary go from 7M to 1M in consecutive years?

It's not nearly as bad as Kovalchuk's deal (age 37-43 all at $1M), but come on..

Erhoff, as well. he's 29 this season and got a 10-year contract for $4M against the cap, but check out the numbers:

$10,000,000 + $8,000,000

$8,000,000 + $5,000,000

$4,000,000

$4,000,000

$4,000,000

$4,000,000

$3,000,000

$1,000,000

$1,000,000

$1,000,000

With the bonuses, his cap hit should be $5.3M.

Bonuses always count against the cap. I think the 12 mil for the first two seasons for Richards is a combination of salary and bonus.

I guess it's ok Smo as long as the contract doesnt reach the players 40th birthday? At least thats what I heard about the Kovalchuck causing the new rule. I thought bonus' were also part of average salary for the term.

I'm not crazy about it either. I think the Kov, Richards and Erhoff deals are complete crap. They should put a 6 year cap on any contract.

Same goes for Erhoff's contract I imagine.

Ahh, ok. I guess it just means he gets the bonus before the season starts, not spread out over the season (like how the Sens got screwed over for a few million by Heatley when he asked to be traded, but turned down the Edm deal before the bonus day).

I don't really mind the total number of years, like if it's from age 25 to 35, but when a contract goes past a guy's ~37th birthday, then they probably doubt he'll play (particularly for a forward). Maybe the salary cap hit should be something like... the next 4 years, plus the highest single-year value, divided by 5 (or all 5 next years if the highest year is part of those 5 years). So Richards' hits would be

yr1: $10M

yr2: $9M

yr3: $9M

yr4:$7.4M

yr5: $5.9M

yr6: $4.4M

yr7: $3.75M

yr8: $4.667M

yr9: $6.5M

It gets weird at the end because in the 9th year, i'm just taking $1M+$12M, so maybe it'd be better to say something like the highest single-year value in the last 4 or 5 years.

Or, when that 4 year windows hits the end of the contract, then you stop moving the window and just take the final 4 years and the highest year. that makes it..

yr1: $10M

yr2: $9M

yr3: $9M

yr4:$7.4M

yr5: $5.9M

yr6-9: $4.4M

I think that looks pretty reasonable... Although teams might go.. "well, we have lots of salary cap room right now, so pay him loads, as well as another good player, then we can aim to make a run at the cup 5 years from now when their cap hits are lower."

Another rule I'd add is a limit on how much salary can change in successive years. A guy's salary should not be able to drop from $7M to $1M. It should be at least half the previous season's...

Here's why the B.Richards and Ehrhoff contracts aren't cap circumvention:

It's cap circumvention if the SALARY in either of the final two years is less than half of the SALARY in one of the first 2 years.

So, If you want to give a guy $1M in the last 2 years of his contract, it's pretty easy: Give him $2M in salary the first year and $10M in signing bonus (Richards) or $2M in salary and $8M in signing bonus (Ehrhoff).

Ridiculous...

(although.. i can't find where that rule is written.. this page has some circumvention rules, but not that specific one..)

Also, apparently when the league and NHLPA made the Kovalchuk-inspired salary cap rules, they agreed to make no more changes until the CBA ran out... so though the league might think the contracts are circumvention via signing bonus loophole, they simply don't have the ability to do anything about it.

  • 6 months later...

loloololol Just when i thought Brian Burke had the Laffs going in the right direction, he panics and signs Tim Connolly to a 2 year 9.5M contract.

Man that makes the Leino deal seem like a steal. Connolly is washed up and one hit away from being done for his career.

Wow is all I can say.

WOW LOLOL

leino - 3 goals 7 assists

Ya how bad was that prediction? He's sucked ass, but i wadn't only one on the wagon for all the moves. Granted we've had a ton of injuries but still.

Boyes 4.25M (3G)

Stafford 4.25M (7G)

Leino 4.5M (3G)

Roy 4.5M (8G)

What a bunch of bums. Reghyr has been below average too. Miller seems to have lost it too.
