Can Ron Barr's text be changed?

pretty much. it is easiest if the new text takes up the same space as the old text. open the ROM in a hex editor and search for "Ron Barr." that'll bring you to the part where his spiel is in the ROM data. the parts are broken up and there are symbols where the players are mentioned. you'll want to leave that part there, if you intend to have players mentioned. feel free to open one of my ROMs to see the types of alterations you can make. good luck.

You can't put any character, because you can only use characters that have graphics in the ROM. So you can't use é, ç, etc. Also, I think the % sign is used somehow to indicate a variable, like where the team name or arena should be substituted in.

(I changed the thread title to something explanatory..)

if you open the file in a tile editor, you can scan until you see the font that is being used in the game. you may have to rotate the tiles with the +/- keys next to the delete key until they display correctly. these are the characters you can use in much of the text. Ron's rant allows more characters than many of the text-enabled sections of the game, so most of what is in the font can be used. like Smoz typed, some symbols are used as pointer cues and variables, so </%> isn't gong to display like that. what, exactly, did you have in mind?

If you need a character that is not in the font graphics, you should be able to modify the graphics to get that character, replacing another character that (hopefully) is never used. You would have to type the old character in the Ron Barr text to get your replacement character (assuming they made it so the characters/graphics match up!). So, if you see there is a '+' character in there for some reason, you could replace it with ö or whatever to get proper Finnish names.
