Sabres Win Another 7 Game War

Buffalo advances to the third round of the Gens A Classic playoffs after an incredible 7 game series triumph over Quebec.

Buffalo entered game one with their lineup from game seven of the first round intact, making no changes to their original '94 first line of Bodger-Svoboda-Hawerchuk-Lafontaine-Mogilny. This wouldn't last long, as two early Doug Bodger penalties led to the deployment of series one goat Grant Ledyard. Joe Sakic opened the scoring at 3:01, but Alex Mogilny soon answered with two goals 8 and 33 seconds later. Quebec's underrated defense then swung the momentum back in their team's favor as Gusarov and Duchesne both scored, followed by 2 more from Sakic. Lafontaine scored the only goals of the 3rd with 2, but it wasn't enough as Quebec won 5-4.

Game 2's first big moment came at 1:20 as Grant Ledyard knocked Andrei Kovalenko out of the game on a vicious mid-ice hit. This seemed to give Buffalo a boost, but they failed to reap the benefits as his replacement Mike Ricci was even harder to contain. Lafontaine's hot streak continued as he scored the only goal of the first, but Buffalo's lead wouldn't last. Ricci and Sakic both scored power play goals before Lafontaine tied it, but Sundin and Ricci teamed up to score three straight goals. Ricci completed his hat trick at 1:37 of the 3rd, and Quebec seemed to have this one wrapped up...but Buffalo was far from finished. After putting Mogilny back at center and Bob Errey in Hawerchuk's place, Buffalo rallied late, with Lafontaine tying the game with 13 seconds left, then Mogilny made quick work of overtime, scoring 6 seconds in.

The momentum was clearly on Buffalo's side in game three after the thrilling end of game two. Errey scored 44 seconds in, followed by 2 from Lafontaine. Sakic and Duchesne gave Quebec a glimmer of hope, but Lafontaine and Mogilny snuffed out the rally to lead the 7-3 romp. Buffalo's last three goals were shorthanded.

Game 4 was the opposite of game 3 as Quebec scored the first 7 goals. Buffalo didn't answer until the third, and they scored 4, but it wasn't nearly enough. Sakic dominated this one, leading the way with 5 points.

Game 5 was more of the same as Sakic was too much for the Sabres. He scored the first two goals of the game in less than two minutes. The Sabres tried to play catch up, and almost succeeded. Mogilny scored the last two goals, and had a chance to tie the game on a penalty shot late, but got stopped by Hextall and Quebec grabbed control of the series with an 8-7 win.

Bob Errey decided he wasn't ready to golf yet, taking command of game 6 early and forcing game 7. He scored twice, followed by two from Mogilny, and the two seemed to trade goals all game. Errey finished with four goals in an 8-1 thrashing, which set the stage for another game 7.

Errey then scored 26 seconds into game 7, demoralizing the Nordiques. Mogilny and Errey then again traded goals, raising Buffalo's lead to 3-0. Sakic scored to open the second period, but it was his last hurrah. Lafontaine scored 10 seconds later to again put Buffalo up by a field goal. Kovalenko and Gusarov scored to cut Buffalo's lead to 1 going into the third. Errey and Mogilny responded, closing out the series with goals.

GGs.
