10 min periods and auto line changes. whaaaaaaaaat?

Thrillist Link - NHL '94 Invitational

Auto.. why would you ever use Auto.. have fun getting a lead then always getting your checking line on the ice..

All-Star squads are off limits, and besides, the East All-Stars were way better -- Ray Bourque was a 99, and Lemieux was a 100!

Yeaaahh.. about that..

Someone needs to tell them about the weight bug. AFTER winning the tournament with Detroit of course.

Just set your checking line to SC2 or some other way to compensate. Yeah, you can be generous and let your opponent use the almighty Pittsburgh.

I think if I told my wife that I'm driving to Philly for the weekend to play in a live '94 tournament, she may actually kill me.

Here's an email exchange I had with the guy running it. He says we are all panzees. Too bad this is in Philly. Philly sucks. LOL JK.

No entry fee. I'm a purist, 10 minute periods. Penalties and off sides and auto line changes are on. Any thing else is for panzees.

See you there

If I didnt have work or if the prize was something I'd use (aka not beer) I'd totally go play. If anyone from here does go please light up these people, put up like 30 goals in a game and they will surely change their minds on the rules. Let me know how it goes and hopefully the next time somewhere in the Philly area does a tourney I will be able to go

I think about halfway through one of these 10-minute-period games, when they're down 8-2 and just want the game to be over, they'll come around to the 5-minute periods.

Maybe the later games could be 10-min periods, but the initial games should be 5-minners or people will get sick of it.

Why in Mark Lesser's name would a purist play with AUTO LINE CHANGES? C'mon Man. Now the question becomes... who is the best team to choose with these extra GA rules? I'm thinking my top 4 teams in order would be Montreal, Detroit, Los Angeles, New York Rangers... Chicago, Vancouver, Buffalo, Calgary, Quebec, Winnipeg, Toronto also under consideration.

Anyone have thoughts on this? Has there been a ranking of classic teams with line changes?

I'll take a very quick stab at this.

Using some Excel-fu, I came up with this. It's based somewhat on GDL draft history. The top players are rated 100, and the worst players who got drafted twice in GDL 3-8 are rated 50. So if you see a line rated under 50, you know that line wouldn't even qualify for being the worst possible line ever in GDL!

The line ratings (F1=forward line 1, etc) are weighted to the best player on the line, so even though Chicago only has 2 good forwards (Roenick and Larmer), they still end up with the 2nd best forward line after Detroit, because Roenick accounts for 50% of the line rating, Larmer 33%, and Whoever else just 17%.

For the overall rating (Rat), it works similarly.. but the %s are a bit different. I also count the goalie as especially valuable, since he's always on the ice.

Some observations...

Teams with 9 FORWARDS drafted at least twice in GDL 3-8: BUF, NYR

Teams with 6 DEFENCE drafted at least twice in GDL 3-8: DET, QUE, CGY

Chicago is not deep at all, but their amazing F1/D1/G carry them and they get the top rating, tied with MTL.

Montreal is like the reverse of CHI, but also with a good goalie. Their F1 and D1 are not great, but their depth is crazy.

Detroit is in the top 10 in all lines! Even if you get stuck with your checking line all the time, your 3rd defense pairing is Chiasson and HALL OF FAMER Mark Howe, so it's not such a big deal that your F3 is pretty lame. In fact, DET's D3 is better than the D2 of 20 teams!

However, it'd be hard to go wrong with MTL or CHI, due to their goalies.. over the course of a 10-minute periods game, with line changes, the goalies are going to be critically important. Make sure one of these teams is left for you in the finals!

I factored endurance in slightly... but probably not enough.

(EDIT: updated ratings, fixing my mistakes)

well just FYI its double-elimination and you can only use a team once until you lose first game then it resets and you can reuse teams after that

Yeah, I caught that, that adds some strategy to it.. except you probably won't have seen your opponent play before or know how good he is, so it'll be hard to gauge which team to take..

to be honest I'd imagine almost anyone from this site would probably crush most mortals with any team in NHL 94. When I first got on to this site I thought I was GREAT at the game but after a few games I realized how crazy good some people are at the game compared to me.

did you win it bud?

Assuming nobody else from this community is there, my money is on wookie to win it all. In what is essentially a "C" league with 10 minute periods, it will be extremely difficult to beat him. Auto line changes be damned.

Ok... Here's the official write-up...

Wookiee Goes Undefeated in Jose Pistola's Winter Classic NHL 94 Invitational

January 2, 2012

First of all, I must say that the guys at Jose Pistola's bar did a great job. Most of us in the online community frowned upon Auto Line Changes and Offsides On, but the rules ended up having little affect on the actual games. Offsides seemed to slow down offenses, which may have resulted in more overtime games which made things pretty exciting.

The first round we played with 10 minute periods, but every other round was 5 minute periods until the final because it was taking too long.

About 30 people showed up to play, which was a lot more than I expected even though the facebook page had over 30 RSVPs. There were also a lot of people there who had no idea what NHL 94 was. It was a pretty awesome scene. 2 TVs upstairs, and 1 TV downstairs had NHL 94, while a couple other TVs showed college football and then the Rangers Flyers Winter Classic on NBC.

The Rules: Every game starts with a coin toss. The winner choses their team first. The other player could choose any other team and plays as the home team. Choosing teams was a major element of strategy, because you couldn't choose the same team twice (unless you went to the loser's bracket at which point it would reset).

Game 1

Los Angeles Kings 13 @ Chicago Blackhawks 4

This was actually a close game in the first period. The score was 4-4 at one point, then I scored 9 in a row. Gretzky, Sandstrom, Robitaille, Granato had big games.

After everyone played their first game, the organizers created a winners bracket and a loser's bracket. Seeding was determined by goal differential. Since I was +9, I got #1 seed, and a bye to the next round. Good system (even though they didn't tell us about it until later).

Game 2

Detroit Red Wings 4 @ Chicago Blackhawks 0

After choosing Detroit, I was a little annoyed when my opponent picked Chicago in the 2nd consecutive game. Didn't matter. Next.

Game 3

Pittsburgh Penguins 2 @ New York Rangers 7

Finally, I get home advantage and my opponent picks Pittsburgh first. Most of us know that Pittsburgh sucks in GENS, so you can imagine that I was pretty happy. Since this was during the Rangers-Flyers Winter Classic Game, and since I'm a huuge Rangers fan, I choose the Rangers.

Next thing I know, I'm down 1-0 on the first shot of the game. I switch out the 'Beezer for Richter in net, but other things are going wrong. The buttons on the controller are sticking. I'm getting nervous. Mike Gartner is not dominating how I want him to. Messier is feeling heavy. I'm regretting not choosing Buffalo.

Then I get in the groove and score a bunch of goals. Next!

I should also say that this was the moment when my college buddy got eliminated. He went 2-2 overall, even though he hadn't played NHL '94 in about 15 years. He had played back in the day, and we played some warmup games at his place in Philly the night before.

Game 4 - Winner's Bracket Final

Chicago Blackhawks 5 @ Toronto Maple Leafs 2

I had been saving up Chicago and Montreal, and now I finally get to use JR, Belfour, Chelios and the boys. Sutter comes through with a clutch goal. Toronto gets a lot of penalties. NEXT!

Game 5 - Championship

Montreal Canadiens 11 @ Calgary Flames 0

Scheduled for immediately after the Rangers-Flyers real life game was over, there was still a pretty good crowd at the bar. The Winter Classic, by the way, was a great game. Lundqvist stops a penalty shot with 20 seconds left to preserve a 3-2 come from behind victory. GO RANGERS!

On to the '94... It was pure domination. I scored at least 2 double shorthanded goals, and at least 4 shorthanded goals overall. Kind of anti-climactic, but Montreal plays great defense and the Savard / Lebeau line was unstoppable.

Philly is a hostile environment for a New York sports fan... but considering that I was a Rangers fan wearing Rangers colors (I left my Messier jersey at home, but wore a blue and red shirt), rooting for the Rangers, and the Rangers beat the Flyers earlier... everybody was pretty cool, and it was all in fun. It seemed like every time somebody called out a wise-crack remark like "F--- you, Rangers Fan!" during the final game, I scored a beauty... so I didn't really mind. At one point, someone said "He's a silent killer" because I wasn't really talking any smack. I was mainly focused on the game, but made an effort to represent myself, New York / New Jersey, and the organ-i-zation (NHL 94 Online community) in a classy and respectful way.

After the game, I won a beer gift basket from Allagash Brewery. I commended the organizer, Casey, for doing a great job, and told everybody to check out nhl94.com. As a token of my appreciation, I gave Casey the NHL2012 ROM, which DynamiteSJ put on an old school cartridge for me. They loved it. Much thanks to DynamiteSJ for getting that to me quickly because it was a late decision for me to make the trip. Also, much thanks to Smozoma, Clockwise, and everybody else who was involved in producing the ROM (sorry of I'm missing anybody). Halifax, thank you so much for sharing this event with everyone on the forum.

Also gotta thank everybody here in the community. My '94 game has really picked up in the last few months, and it's because of all you guys.

Cheers. Happy New Year!
