Mr. Retro Sports
awesome read bud....nhl hockey is my favourite gens hockey game. Thanks - I picked up an EA Hockey MegaDrive game (complete with everything) as well. I really like the international skin there.
halifax
Trying to figure out why we call EA '91? When it seems that from the article EA hockey came out after NHL hockey. So I'm thinking we should also be calling it '92?
MikeGartner22
@halifax I’m sure this is known/posted somewhere on here but the rosters and player ratings between EA and NHL hockey are identical. Soviet Union is Pittsburgh, Canada is LA, USA is Calgary, etc. Very easy to see in a side by side of NOSE.

You can open the rom in the NHL Old School Editor to edit the ratings and see the teams, too:

MikeGartner22
@smozoma it really puts NJ, WSH, VAN, and PHI in a different light...Spain, Italy, UK and Portugal. Not exactly hotbeds of hockey.
clockwise
It does explain the massive, Hungarian, Terry Yake fanbase.

That is a huge reason why I visited Hungary a few years ago and was able to enjoy it as much as I did.

Poland? FYI, Japan actually replaces Sweden in the Famicom / Japanese version. That's why I thought there might be a Japanese team in the Japanese version of EA Hockey.

Is Robert stack around? probably just a throwback that someone added to later when the year was added to the name, it was never actually named that, always EA HOCKEY to me ahh just seeing the preview in MEAN MACHINES was enough for me for an instant sale, as i was looking for a decent enough ice hockey game ... and after TWO DECADES of using it for my simming competitions it was retired and i guess the teams were selected because they were the more popular ones ... yes even poland it was quite interesting as to who won ... here's the list of my world champions 2009-2010 - GERMANY 2008-2009 - FINLAND 2007-2008 - SWITZERLAND 2006-2007 - FRANCE 2005-2006 - SWEDEN 2004-2005 - SWEDEN 2003-2004 - UNITED STATES 2002-2003 - CANADA 2001-2002 - RUSSIAN REPUBLIC 2000-2001 - HUNGARY (NOT A TYPO, they beat CANADA 7-2!) 1999-2000 - SWEDEN 1998-1999 - NETHERLANDS 1997-1998 - C.I.S.
