winner gets $100 bucks....although only allowing 26 participants because there's 26 teams seems kinda whack...can you imagine paying $30 to use florida? yeesh.

WHAT: NHL ’94 Tournament

WHERE: Play2 Parx Casino

WHEN: Sunday, April 22, 2012 from 8:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.*

WHY: To raise more money for ESYHF — oh, and because NHL ’94 was awesome.

HOW MUCH: Registration costs $30. We will then hold a silent auction for team selection position once registration is complete.

wtga? i guess they are they trying to get all the buds to pay extra money for better teams. lame. on the other hand, supporting youth hockey is cool.

  • 5 weeks later...

Did anybody else register for this? I think tonight at midnight is the deadline for the "silent auction" registration. I emailed the guy and he said there's no open spots, unfortunately.

There's an interesting playoff format:

Here is how the tournament will go...

There will be 4 divisions as there were in 1994. Each team will play 6 games. You will play every team in your division once. The Western Conference, because they have 2 fewer teams, will play one team from the opposing division.

After that is over, the top 4 teams from each division will play single elimination games to determine a champion. However, differing from the real NHL, it will be cross-conference. For example, the #1 seed in the Patrick Division will play the #4 seed in the Smythe, and the winner of that game will play the winner of the game which matches the #2 seed in the Norris vs the #3 seed in the Adams.

At worst, everyone will play 6 games.

Icing: On (I honestly can’t remember if this is even an option)

Goalie: User’s choice

also of note: I do like the format. I'm guessing he must have at least 4 stations....otherwise that's a lot of waiting around.

interesting, but I don't trust a guy who doesn't know if there is an icing call and is asking for money.

the story isn't that great... i went undefeated. everybody was really nice. the organizers did a great job. the bar / restaurant that hosted it in Parx casino was pretty bad. the TVs were all like 60 inches and the seating was about 5 feet away. bad food, bad service. my friend i drove down with got in an argument with our bartender. really bad, really loud pop music playing the whole time.

i got really lucky being able to take Quebec at #16. sakic was my MVP. sundin, kovalenko, nolan, kamensky, ricci, duchesne, hextall all played great for me. young even scored a bunch of short-handed goals.

the tournament started with a preliminary round within the division.

first game vs hartford. 7-0. i was talking to the guy later and he told me that his dad does radio play-by-play for the flyers and he was in the press box for the infamous game 3. he said he was more of an nhl '95 guy and never really played '94. really nice dude. i showed him the "Building Lines with AJ" for Hartford on my iPhone and he was slightly blown away. he told me he has a Mac, but was considering getting a PC just so he could get into nhl 94 online!

second game was against buffalo. i won 3-2. closest game i had all day. fuhr played really well for him. mogilny caught me off-guard a few times for breakaways.

third game was against montreal. i won 9-0. that's when i started to feel other guys watching me play and talking about how quebec would be the team to beat. one of the guys in the crowd was doing play-by-play and i was really digging it. he also did some commentary during one of the other games. it was pretty funny. i was impressed that he knew all the guys on quebec. we were talking about how hextall, duchesne, and ricci were all part of the lindros trade and they were all playing great for me. then kerry huffman scored a goal and it was just too funny.

fourth game was against ottawa. i won 7-0. this game was against an unregistered replacement player because someone who registered didn't show up. the replacement was actually the wife of one of the guys who had a high pick in team selection. she was really nice, and smiling the whole time. she told me the first time she ever played was the night before against her husband. i took it easy on her, and tried to coach her up a little bit. ottawa is a tough team to play with, and not surprising that they were the last team available.

fifth game was against pittsburgh. i won 5-2. the dude was really nice. at the end of the game, i told him about the weight bug and how pittsburgh is a real tough team to play with.

my last division game was supposed to be against boston. the guy left early for some reason, so i won by forfeit.

during the division games, they were selling raffle tickets. then they did the ticket drawing and gave away some prizes. pretty impressive that they got EA Sports to sponsor it and gave away a copy of NHL '12 for xbox. everybody got a sweet t-shirt with a list of sponsors on the back, including ea sports. the front had their "master of the classics" design.

on to the playoffs...

another game against pittsburgh. this time, i won 7-1. the guy was such a nice dude, i kinda felt bad for him because he was really trying hard but couldn't get any offense going.

next game, i play detroit. this is actually the husband of the woman who played as ottawa! i whooped him, 9-0. his wife was loving it! we were all having a good laugh. again, a really nice guy. total class act as far as playing out the whole game and then a good hand shake and best wishes being sent both ways at the end of the game. he told me that he actually found the message board post about Team Rankings and i told him that kingraph is my man!

so now we're onto the semi-finals and i play against calgary, who is also undefeated upto this point. after the first 30 seconds, it's pretty obvious that this guy is the best player i had played yet. he's getting decent scoring chances and controlling some possession in my zone. on the other end, i'm peppering vernon with shots, and he's standing on his head. the score is 2-2 after 2 periods and i'm feeling nervous for the first time all day. there's a pretty big crowd watching the game. third period starts and i score a quick goal to take the lead. he's hanging in there and gets a nice chance or 2. then i score an insurance goal to go ahead 4-2 with about a minute left. that would be the end score. again, the guy is a class act. really friendly. hand shake and it's on to the finals.

compared to the free tournament i played in philly a few months ago, this tournament is definitely a lot more civil. not sure if it's because the registration fee weeds out the dirtbags, or on that particular day the flyers lost to the rangers in the winter classic so everybody was in a salty mood. i was surprised that i didn't recognize anybody from that tourney at this tourney.

final game:

philly is my opponent in the finals. the guy tells me that he plays a lot of nhl '12 on playstation 3 but he hasn't played nhl '94 in about 18 years. i'm feeling pretty good about my chances. i win the faceoff and score a quick goal. then i score another quick goal. then i score another one. i'm up 3-0 after about 1 or 2 minutes. the game is pretty much a clinic. i'm scoring on breakaways, one-timers, slap-shots, everything but the pass-shot. end score is 9-1. another good hand shake and it's over.

they give me the trophy. i raise it above my head and the 10-15 guys left all clap it up. i say thanks to the organizers and tell everyone to check out nhl94.com (which i had been talking up all day).

still waiting for my $100 prize. the guy who organized it told me he'd send me a check in the mail.
