Icestorm & ProBob to provide live commentary at the 20th Anniversary tournament!

Recommended Posts

As most are aware Icestorm & ProBob have both been trying their hands at some play by play commentary on the videos of some games:

I'd like to put forward that when the 20th anniversary live tournament takes place next year, that these guys do the live commentary in the playoffs, to add some flavour to the event. If you'd like to see that happen make a quick comment below please!

P.S. Halifax - Any progress on getting this organised? EA confirmed sponsors? Jeremy Roenick guest of honour to hand out the trophies? Commemorative freebies?

Hokkee is just mad he lives in VAN and cant come out east to the tourney! I am fully supportive of helping organize a tourney.. If we decide on Pittsburgh I am sure Bo, Wittenstein, and I will work our asses off to ensure a great experience!

Absolutely! Bring it to Pittsburgh!

Sorry for the double post (and maybe this is the wrong place to post this), but, seriously, I think a strong case can be made for having an event in Pittsburgh. For one, we already have a lot of members here-- me, bo, carse, caged (although he's m.i.a. right now and everyone may be pissed at him, but I'm sure he'd come), probob. Then, geographically, we are reasonably close to all of the North East people on the site. Philly: Jesus!, xdeathsbloodx, orangeandblack. Massachusetts: Donny, minpin. NJ: da94wookiee, Jaylighter (I think). Then NY has a good bit. (Sorry, too lazy to keep naming people.) And for all of the eastern Canada people, Pittsburgh is reasonable location in the US for them. Driving can be expensive, but megabus runs from NY and Philly and Toronto and a lot of other cities to Pittsburgh and usually costs only $20-50 each way to Pittsburgh. (http://us.megabus.com/default.aspx)

Idk how we would run it (like where we would have the event), but it would be awesome if we could rent out an event room in a hotel in the North Shore and set up some tvs and gens and have an all-day tournament (or, if we want to be cheap, even a really large hotel room), then afterwards we could all get hammered and walk to the Rivers Casino or a bar or go to a Pirates game. Also, the South Side and Station Square are close (quick cab ride) and they have tons of great bars and night life. So, if people came down here for a weekend, believe it or not, there would be tons of things to do and would make for an amazing weekend.

Anyways, maybe Carse or Bo can make a better case or have better ideas, but I think that if people are ever gonna get a live tournament together, Pittsburgh is somewhere people should seriously consider.

Think big though guys. Its the 20th anniversary of a legendary game still being played today. Gotta be a sponsored gig, presented professionally in a hotel or even a conference hall/arena & with national/international gaming magazines and journalists covering it.

Corporate sponsors, hockey pros from the game, the game designers, a classic category, a Clockwise 2013 rom tournament, a 2v2 category, a draft league category with guys picking their team before the tournament date. Stuff like that. Major, major event over a weekend, Friday to Sunday.

Don't let it turn into 10 guys in a basement playing 94 for an afternoon & then going out on the beer afterwards! I wanna see gaming websites talking about this months before it happens!

Is there actually a chance that EA would sponsor an event? (I'm sure this has been posted before, but is it even legal to edit 94?)

Get the Pens to sponsor?

http://penguins.nhl.com/club/microhome.htm?location=/corporate_sales

Crosby plays in the tournament-- Orangeandblack scores a goal on him and tells him to cry like a b****.

Also, North Shore has some really nice hotels. And, again, it's a great and really beautiful location.

Maybe if the tourney was weight-big fixed, the Pens would be willing to sponsor (being that Lemieux's the co-owner of the team, for those who don't follow the NHL). :-)

In all homesty though, Pittsburgh would be a good city ro have this in. Not extremely expensive, in an area where we're within reasonable distance of the big hockey markets (Detroit, Chicago, Philly, New York, Boston, Buffalo, D.C., eastern Canada), and it's also a city that houses all kinds of stupid events and it has a population that supports all kinds of stupid events (Pierogi races anyone?).

EA sponsored the live tourni Wookie went to didn't they?

Also, someone posted an interview with one of the 94 creators/programmers, where he stated how cool it was that this site existed & that people were editing the game.

A Pens/EA sponsored tourny sounds good to me!!

Dawookie said EA sponsored the last tournament he went to, so if someone can put some real work in, a nice sponsored anniversary tourney could happen.

Trying to set up and coordinate a large-scale, multi-day event like Robbie is talking about would require a LOT of time, effort, money and resources from a few people. Also, as crazy as it may seem to us, most people will not be willing to spend their free time and money for a weekend trip including hotel to play NHL'94. While I'd LOVE to see that happen, I don't know if we (the '94 community) have that available. Pooling our resources is an idea, but there still needs to be one leader dedicated to putting in a lot of work -- i.e. dedicating a few months to do this...

Just some quick notes from the top of my head:

* Human Resources

- Head Organizer

- Asst. Organizers

- Staff/administrative team

a. Promotion

b. Referees/Coordinators

c. Fundraisers

* The Tournament

- size/duration

- rules

- location/facility

- prizes (from sponsors?)

- fees

* Sponsorships

- EA

- NHL/Local hockey team

- Local businesses

I'm sure I'm missing some things, but at least it's a place to start. I think people actually get paid to do this, lol, so for "us" (the community), to seriously accomplish this would be impressive to say the least.

A smaller-scale tournament with 20-30 people seems a lot more plausible. Maybe there is a retro-gaming tournament or modern NHL game tournaments that could be incorporated. Anyway, my two cents...

I would be willing to assist any way I could. Based on my experience i'd probably be suited to drawing up tournament formats and game schedules. Would Halifax & Chaos be the guys for promotion, administration?

Here's an idea: The pens & EA sponsor & the event takes place in a coporate box at their arena, with the event finishing on the day of a game (Probably a Saturday or Sunday game). Invite gaming press and journalists to cover it, and because of the venue it's an awesome event..............maybe the trophies get presented on the ice by Mario? A 30-40 guy tournament could be doable in an arena corporate box. Small event, but still a spectacular location and the possibility for good publicity & coverage.

Seems a feasible idea to me?

Damn... yeah, that would be awesome. I would think the best way to do something like that would be to somehow convince EA to create and promote the event-- have someone like Evan contant them and try to convince them that 94 deserves a big 20 year anniversary event to celebrate and recognize how groundbreaking the game was and even use 94 as a way to celebrate the success of the entire nhl franchise. And then you could maybe mention that you already have a core of guys who are willing to participate. Maybe you could even do it to coordinate it with the release of NHL 13 which Malkin has a good chance of making the cover. (The Pens have been marketing hard to get fans to vote Geno on the cover and looks like he will probably end up getting it.) If Geno makes the cover, then I'm sure EA would be able to get the Pens involved and make the event happen. (Maybe have both an NHL 13 and NHL 94 tournament at Consol Energy Center celebrating the entire series and how far it has come.)

But without EA doing the work, idk how realistic it is to have anything bigger than a nice community reunion.

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic.

So all we have to do is convince EA, The Pittsburgh Penguins Organization, Mario Lemieux himself, The Consol Energy Center, various journalists and gaming press to fork up some cash, and watch a bunch of guys play NHL'94 in a corporate box for a few hours, for some good publicity?

I feel better playing the lottery.

Sorry Robbie, that's quite a stretch.

This is exactly what I was trying to say, but said with a lot more clarity :) ..............which is surprising considering your previous idea was like you were planning a date: "Lets book a hotel room & then go get drunk!" lol :D

Can the people in the know make this happen please! EA really should take the bull by the horns here, and the idea of co-ordinating it as a publicity event for the release of NHL13 is awesome. Someone really needs to make contact with EA.

lol. Yeah... if at some point we'd just like to have a nice community reunion and tournament, I think that Pittsburgh would make sense and me, carse, and bo could put together if people would agree to come down for a weekend.

As far as LA's idea, I think it is plausible-- we would just have to convince EA (who has the resources) to put the tournament together and market it to them as a good idea to promote the entire nhl games franchise; there's probably (probably being a huge understatement) no way that the people on here have the resources to pull enough strings to make a huge event like that happen.

lol. ok... i gotcha now. I agree that if we put together a good enough pitch, someone like Evan maybe could convince EA to do it-- the idea is certainly plausible.

Mario presenting the trophies was sarcasm. lol

Wittgenstein put it more the way I was thinking it. lol

This community represents an incredible publicity tool for EA to promote the NHL series & brand. "We made this game 20 years ago, and 70-100 guys get online & still play it today............man we make f**king great games!"

EA will do a big publicity event to launch NHL13, so why not use it to include the 20th anniversary of NHL94 as part of the publicity? A classic tournament and a Clockwise NHL94-13 tournament, along with the launch of NHL13 on the new consoles.

Doesn't seem a stretch to me, seems like an amazing and novel publicity tool sitting right at EA's fingertips!

I have some sweet ocean front property for sale in Iowa.

Honestly though, the best thing anyone can do IMO for this gran plan, is to craft a well thought out email and send it to EA. It would have to be engaging from the start and planned out so well that they would actually consider contacting the source to discuss possibilities.

Community reunion in basement seems to be more possible, even though very very improbable.

Yeah, I still like this idea, too. I really like a lot of the people that I've gotten to know during my brief stints on here and it would be a lot of fun to just have a bunch of us get together for a weekend and have a tournament and go out for drinks and have a good time. Again, if people would want to do this at some point in the future, me bo & carse could def make it happen in Pittsburgh.

I agree-- the grand plan is possible if we all put together ideas and came up with a strong pitch and had someone write the e-mail and had Evan send it-- it would all be about convincing EA that it's a good idea and then they would do all the work.

Consol Energy Center will never happen, or at the very least, not on a game night. Up to like 250 consecutive sell-outs (including every game played since the arena opened), the suites are all booked by corporations, probably for decades, there are 2,000 single-game tickets that go on sale for each game in September, and they typically get sold in about half an hour (and I believe you can only get 4 together). I'm all for thinking big, but that's just too big.

A hotel ballroom with a bar is a much more possible scenario. The only possible way to get Lemieux involved would be to give the proceeds to his charity (Mario Lemieux Foundation, I believe). Then maybe sponsorship from the Penguins would be a possibility.
