BATTLE OF MONTCLAIR OVER!

Congratulations to Da94wookie whose Toronto side advance to the Blitz B semi finals, continuing his record breaking season.

8th seed WSH were never really considered likely contenders for this series, but many thought Gretzkyonacold's defensive, counter attacking style could possibly provide a chance of an upset, and so it proved in game 1 as a a Tomas Sandstrom Hat trick (the 3rd of which was a lucky pass into the net through the goalie's legs) gave the Caps the fiest game 3-2 and set Toronto nerves jangling!

Game 2 saw Toronto come flying out of the traps though, racing into a 3-0 lead in the first period. Gilmour with 2 & Messier with one - Looks like someone made 'em angry! A hammering looked on the cards, but after bringing Brian Bellows on for Sergio Momesso at the end of the 1st he promptly set up Tomas Sandstrom & then Tony Granato to set up a thrilling 3rd period. The game went back & forth but Toronto held on. 1-1 in the series & off to Washington.

At the Caps Toronto once again came flying out, going 2-0 up early, capitalising on defensive errors, & once again Momesso was subbed out for Bellows & once again his superior passing set up Sandstrom to get WSH back in it. At 2-1 in the 2nd Bellows then took out Messier for the period, and a power play for Toronto threatened to hand the initiative back their way...........but Momesso back in to sure up the D hit them on the break & set Sandstrom up for a quick goal before the same man jinked through the defence to put the Caps 3-2 up going into the 3rd! High drama.

Messier came back in for the 3rd..........and it looked like Bellow's headshot had caused him to turn into the Incredible Hulk!............Don't make him angry. You wouldn't like him when he's angry. The WSH D went on a kamakaze forward surge, first allowing Messier to go through 1v1 and make it 3-3 before making it 4-3 just seconds later when a silly goalie error allowed him to roll the puck into an empty net. From that point on WSH were throwing everything forward, allowing 2 more late goals, including Messier's hat trick strike to finish the game. 2-1 TOR.

Game 4's result looks like an easy one - Don't bet on it. 0-0 all the way to 3:11 in the 2nd before Borshevsky popped up with a goal to break the deadlock. Doug Gilmour got a second early in the 3rd before Brian Bellows, again coming off the bench made it 2-1, but Gilmour & 2 more from Borshevsky ensured a comfortable scoreline in the end. 3-1 TOR, and they were on the verge of going through.

In what was a similar theme TOR got 2 early goals in game 5 before Bellows made his obligatory swap for Momesso, and he promptly set up Sandstrom to get WSH back in the game in the 1st, before a short handed Caps actuallt went ahead with 2 more Sandstom goals in the second, looking for a game 6. Doug Gilmour popped up with a slap shot goal with 3 minutes left in the 3rd though ..............and we were going into OT.

Both team's started OT at pace, with both goalie's being forced into saves, before Sergio Momesso (Why was he on again?!) went into the box for slashing. PP Toronto!

Things were still tight, but in the end Gilmour proved the match winner, slotting into an empty net from on the line after Richter had fumbled several close range shots before diving at the puck & missing to gift Gilmour, and TOR the series win.

Tomas Sandstrom's 10 goals in 5 games, including 3 hat tricks were impressive, but man of the series must go to either Doug Gilmour for scoring some of the most important goals, including the late equaliser & OT winner in game 5, or Mark Messier who at times was just unplayable, running though what looked like genuinly good hits left & right throughout most of the games. Nikolai Borshevsky also showed a stubbonness to stay on his feet throughout the series which belied his 6 weight, and aloowed him to contribute major points too.

Congrats to Wookie & TOR. He kept it classy throughout, & he'd probably say the games were closer fought than he was expecting. GL the rest of the way.
