orangeblack92
Hey I am hoping somebody who knows computers can help me out with this. NHL 2002 for PC was my first ever video game. Recently I re-bought it to live out some childhood memories. The game was working fine until an actual game was about to start, then the "this program has stopped working" sign always came up. The screen got multicolored t that point as well. My laptop isn't very advanced, I got it a a quick, cheap replacement for my broken one a couple months ago for $350. Because of this, I am assuming my graphics card isn't capable of handling games. Am I right, or do you think it's something else? Thanks in advance! dcicon5148
Anything you have bought in the last 24 months should be able to handle that game. My guess is that there might be some issues if you are running a 2002 game on Windows 8 and/or a 64 bit operating system.
orangeblack92
Yeah I am on windows 8. If that is the problem, is there a way around this?
shaftman
scanning the web I didn't see anything related to windows 8 and nhl 2002.seems xp and 2000 had some problems. From what I hear 8 is pretty useless.. though haven't tried it myself. have you tried anything like this http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows-8/older-programs-compatible-version-windows Edited July 25, 2014 by shaftman
smozoma
Try setting the compatibility mode of the .exe file I guess this is the new way to do that..: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows/make-older-programs-run#1TC=windows-7 http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/6832-compatibility-mode-use-windows-8-a.html The old way that probably still works too is, right-click on the exe, click 'propterties', go to the 'compatibility' tab, and select (probably) "windows xp"
orangeblack92
I tried compatibility everything. No dice. I am going to take it to a computer place because I am assuming this is a graphics card issue now.
smozoma
What's the graphics card? AMD/nVidia/Intel? Try downloading the appropriate drivers? To find out what the graphics card/chip is, go to the start menu (or whatever it is in Windows 8) and type "dxdiag.exe" and select it. Say "no" to the popup asking some yes/no question. You'll see a window now.. click the "Display 1" tab. The "Device" area on the left will tell you the video card/chip. Mine says, Name: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 etc etc
orangeblack92
IntelĀ® HD Graphics 4000
smozoma
Hm, that's a pretty modern graphics chip (it's not a real graphics card, but as non-cards go, it's decent). Try updating the graphics driver in windows update. Start -> Windows Update Check in the optional updates for graphics-related updates, and hopefully one of those will resolve the problem.
