halifax
It doesn't really seem like a true world cup when you add in all star teams.....having said that, I'd love to see this pan out. Pierre Lebrun: A European All-Star team could see a forward group including: AnzeKopitar (Slovenia), Thomas Vanek and Michael Grabner (Austria), MarianHossa, Tomas Tatar and Tomas Jurco (Slovakia), Nino Niederreiter(Switzerland), Mats Zuccarello (Norway), Mikkel Boedker and FransNielsen (Denmark), Zemgus Girgensons (Latvia), Mikhail Grabovski(Belarus) amongst others. The defence corps could see the likes of ZdenoChara, Andrej Sekera and Andrej Meszaros (Slovakia), Dennis Seidenbergand Christian Ehrhoff (Germany), Roman Josi and Mark Streit(Switzerland) while the goaltenders could include Jaroslav Halak(Slovakia), Jonas Hiller (Switzerland) and Frederik Andersen (Denmark). http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/world-cup-of-hockey-to-make-dramatic-changes/ TORONTO — The parties discussing the revamped World Cup of Hockeyare prepared to make some dramatic changes to the tournament format,Sportsnet has learned. The eight-team event is now expected to include two all-starentries along with the top six hockey nations — Canada, U.S., Sweden,Finland, Russia and Czech Republic — when it returns in September 2016,according to multiple sources. The first all-star team is expected to feature the best playersfrom the remaining European countries: Slovakia, Switzerland, Latvia,Germany and Slovenia, among them. The makeup of the other mixed squad is still to be determined, although one idea being considered is bringing together all of the topyoung stars in the sport. Organizers looked at staging a pre-tournament qualifier todetermine the final two spots, but don’t believe there is time to pulleverything together. They also like the idea of doing somethingdifferent than the World Cups and Canada Cups of the past and think thatadding all-star teams will make for a more competitive event. When the World Cup was last held in 2004, eight nations contestedthe tournament — Slovakia and Germany joined the top six — with gamesplayed in seven cities spread across two continents. As previously reported by Sportsnet, the 2016 World Cup of Hockey will be staged in Toronto. There had beensome discussion about playing a handful of games in Montreal as well, but two sources indicated that the idea has since been abandoned. Officials from the NHL, NHLPA and International Ice HockeyFederation met in Toronto before Monday’s Hockey Hall of Fame inductionceremony to discuss the tournament. A formal announcement is believed tobe getting closer. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said earlier in the day that areturn to the 2018 Olympics isn’t yet on the table because the World Cuphas “been getting all of our attention.” The revenue from the event — which could be as much as $100million, according to a source — would be split evenly between playersand owners. There are other logistical advantages that they don’t enjoy at the Olympics as well. “We control the time of the games and it’s in North America forprime-time viewing and all of those things,” said Mathieu Schneider, theNHLPA’s special assistant to Don Fehr. “We can accommodate the guysmuch better than travelling around the world in the middle of theseason.” The playing format for the 2016 World Cup will include a round robin, playoffs and a best-of-three final. DominikJagr
I would like to see the classic Canada Cup format with six teams. Single round robin schedule, then semi-finals (1st vs 4th). This won't happen I am afraid. And make it biennial (in the odd-numbered year) please! Sicarius
the old canada cup format was awesome indeed. '87 was an awesome tourney. To me the greatest hockey playoff or series will always be the 1996 World Cup Canada vs USA with following teams: Def: Rob Blake Paul Coffey Eric Desjardins Adam Foote Ed Jovanovski Scott Niedermayer Scott Stevens Sylvain Cote With Cote and Jovanovski being the odd men out Forwards: Gretzky Yzerman Fleury Shanahan Messier Lindros Graves Damphousse Brind'Amour Sakic Lindon Primeau Verbeek Claude Lemieux With mostly Primeau and Verbeek odd men out Goalies were Joseph, Brodeur, and Ranford with CuJo being the #1 goalie VS team USA Def: Leetch Gary Suter Matt Schneider Housley Kevin Hatcher Derian Hatcher Chelios Shawn Chambers Housley and Chambers not playing (think Housley got hurt but can't remember) Forwards: Hull Lafontaine LeClair Modano Tkachuk D. Weight A. Deadmarsh Guerin Joel Otto Bryan Smolinski Scott Young Steve Konowalchuk Shawn McEachern Brian Rolston With McEachern & Rolston sitting mostly Goalies: Mike Richter (series MVP) Guy Hebert and Jim Carey I have this 3 game series recorded and it's still fun to watch almost 20 years later This series had it all and I mean all. From Lindros cross checking Tkachuk in the back of the neck to Hull getting boo'd by Montreal fans but still crushing the fans' hearts by tying game 3, 2-2 with 3:18 left in the 3rd. The entire series was end to end action and phenomenal saves by both Cujo & Richter. has a lot of the highlights.I still get chills watching Amonte scoring in game 3 to go up 3-2. That series really was USA's coming out party in the world of Hockey. I don't know which was more fun, seeing the bench of USA going bonkers after going up 3-2 or seeing Lindros in utter shock and disbelief. (only because I hated Lindros with an extreme passion) I reccommend any fan of hockey to watch this series if possible. It's mean, dirty, and chocked full of extreme hits, skill and speed. kingraph
Wow, Gretzky missed that shot from the sweet pass by Coffey! Thanks for sharing Sicarius.
Sicarius
Lots of HOF'ers on those two teams. All 3 games were insanely intense. The games were dirty on both sides. I never knew if Tkachuk got Lindros back for that slash on the back of his neck but that was the sort of player Lindros was. Lindros was extremely skilled and huge. He could have played the game right and had a very long career (maybe). I hated Lindros not only because of how dirty he was but he was on both sides of the spectrum. He took dives all the time. There's a classic Lindros dive in game 1 of this series. Right as the whistle blows Chelios is moving is stick to the other side of his body and the blade barely and I'm talking barely touches Lindros. He pauses for a second and falls to the ice like a sack of potatoes. It's just classic Lindros. Anyway, I've said it before, for whatever reason karma usually catches up to hockey players. Stevens' hit on Lindros basically ended his career. Little ironic they were team-mates for Canada. But all 3 games are iconic. Just a hell of a series. Game 1 highlights: & game 1 OT goal was on a off-sides play but Canada definitely deserved the win & here's game 2 highlights:
