halifax
http://www.hockeyvideogames.com/nhl-94/nhl-94-news/upcomingnhl94tournament "Over 20 years after it's release and NHL '94 is still being played. A tournament of 128 competitors to find the best NHL '94 player in the world has been organized in Toronto for the "Biggest NHL 94 Tournment in History" on September 12th. They are playing for bragging rights and over $1000 in prize money. The event filled up it's available 120 available participants spots in only three weeks of being publicly announced, and is no longer taking reservations. The entry fee was $45. Due to overwhelming demand, the volunteer organizers from NHL94.com are looking to expand the tournament to over 200 players next year. Half of the competitors will be playing the Sega Genesis version of the game, while the other half is sticking with the Super Nintendo edition. Each console will have it's own triple elimination style tournaments with the winners of the two sides will play one game on each console to determine a single champion. According to organizer Mikey McBryan (of Ice Planes: NWT fame), the Super Nintendo version was the first to run out of spots. This came at the surprise of the NHL '94 community due to the commonbelief that the Genesis version was the better, more popular version of the game. He also explained that the idea to host the tournament came as a offshoot of his "Pixelated Heroes" documentary that he is concurrently directing and producing. The documentary also focuses on the game, and this event will have a place in the film. The film was the inspiration for the idea of finding who really is the best NHL '94 player came from. In meeting the various NHL '94 gamers and players who had boasted of their virtual hockey skills, it was a simple decision to host the competition, and see who really can claim to be the best. Anyone in Toronto on Saturday, September 12th can check out the action for free (or even hope to claim one of the competitor spots, if there is a no-show). I think he meant to say it filled out with three weeks to go.

I think he meant to say it filled out with three weeks to go. Well, as I understood it, it did fill up in three weeks after being announced outside of NHL94.com, which coincidentally about three weeks before the event Edited August 31, 2015 by MCMustang51
aqualizard
That is a good write up but one small quibble: Where it says: "The event filled up it's available 120 available participants spots in only three weeks of being publicly announced, and is no longer taking reservations" it gives the impression (to me) that there is no waiting list, but the website mentions you can get on the waiting list.
