If you can fix NHL '94 what would you do? (Gens)

Recommended Posts

maybe regular (nongoaltender) interference as a two-minute penalty, so you actually have to play the sport, as apposed to just hitting everything that moves. two-line pass whistles would have been great back in the day, but I'm not sure we need it now. with the ability to edit rosters, the instant goalie control button and all of the physics hacks that can make the Genesis version play more like the better version, there really isn't much left to do.

For me, I'd love to see the simplified game play of NHL '94 and all it's little rules, dekes, checking, etc, updated w/ modern graphics.

Aside from that, the ability to patch online play would be awesome. I think a high percentage of the other "bugs" have already been fixed, offered to be fixed, and we choose to use/not use them (weight bug, goalie switch, custom roms, etc).

A patch that enabled a tournament mode and some of the fantasy draft options you get out of the newer games including the online play would be a re-release on newer platform, but if we are "wishing", that's what I'd primarily focus on.

Online through Hamachi w/ the lag/desych's sucks compared to modern games w/ 1000x better graphics, complicated games.

unsolved bugs:

* fix bugs like offside and icing onetimers not causing whistles

* fix that issue where when you're chasing a puck that's being iced and you try to C boost at it to negate the icing, you get stuck in a one-timer animation for a couple seconds and lose the race

* fix the bug where you get stuck as the goalie when you make a bad pass with your goalie when he's out past the faceoff circles

* one-timers should be less accurate while normal shots should be more accurate

* make passes on goal count as shots (due to the prevalence of the pass-shot and how it messes up the stats in leagues). or prevent pass-shots (pass must go at least roughly towards a player). maybe make pass-shots a menu item, on/off.

* Ron Barr hot/cold made correct

* occasionally losing "friction" and your player sliding out of control (except that it's funny, so maybe don't fix it..)

* fix the bug where if the goalie makes a pokecheck on a penalty shot, the player can get the puck and shoot again. Once it's off his stick, he shouldn't be able to pick it up again.

* fix the bug where, when a penalty shot is called, you can score after the whistle, before a penalty shot takes place

* remove the B check (tripping) or greatly increase the likelihood to be called for a penalty, because currently it functions as an automatically successful open ice check. (note: it doesn't work with penalties turned off, so just make it not work even with penalties on. supposedly Plabax already hacked the reverse of this so B check/trip always works?)

* improved AI goaltending, especially on the walk-across/crease-cut

tough ones to fix:

* better AI scoring maybe?
* sometimes when you go to instant replay, the game goes crazy and you can crash it if you don't quickly exit instant replay

* sometimes players just won't get in the penalty box and the game can not continue

* add the defense buttons like SNES (for 6-button controllers)

solved bugs / hacks to include:

* weight bug and C/B check bug fixes, plus using the checking rating to influence checking

* edit lines / team roster player ratings correct

* missing 2nd assist bug fix

* increased rating granularity (16 levels instead of 7)

* goalie button

* improved 3-stars forumula

New things:

* Time on Ice and +/- added to player stats display

* donnybrooks, fracases.. foighting! needs to be a menu item, on/off.

All those things smoz mentioned and...

* display checks per player vs PIM (already done, thanks smoz)

* in-game checks only count for checks per game (thanks smoz)

* after-whistle checks separate stat (thanks smoz)

* fix rosters on teams (no duplicate players in FLA, ANA, etc.)

* fix "superspeed" bug after player misses pass/gets checked

* Change OT length to period length/make it an option

* Fix post whistle penalty shot goal bug

* Expand to 32 teams

* Add 2on2 mode!

* Fatigue rate option for line changes

* Add season mode

* Increase replay length / make it option

* Player card photos for all players

* Separate button for poke check and switch player

That's all I could think about for now.

add my vote for expand to at least 32 teams

season mode is beyond a patch :(

i don't think instant replay length can be increased -- i had trouble finding room to cram the +/- data into in RAM.

- Allow lefties to spinorama/turn like righties can

- Get rid of momentum, or at least make it so that it's fair and understandable. For example, more checks or more shots or more goals = more momentum

MOMENTUM IS THE REAL MYSTERY THAT I TRULY WISH COULD BE SOLVED IN THIS GAME. It's so random from game to game, and it's definitely not just to do with hot/cold

- Remove the hook button, it's dumb lol

- Allow you to aim your dump ins. Which direction you're holding doesn't seem to matter when you dump it in with C or A if you aren't in the offensive zone.

- Disable onetimer auto-aim. Onetimers are cool as hell as they are, but they are pretty ridiculous, almost too ridiculous. If you could (and had to) manually aim your onetimers, that would be so cool

- Make injuring players not a penalty. I know you can make it a 0 second penalty or whatever with hacks, but you still need to watch the cutscene of them going to the box which is lame.

- Allow you to choose how hard you pass based on how long you hold B

- Make faceoffs not random! Have it actually timing based would be the easiest. Even better would be some sort of rock paper scissors + timing minigame involving the A B and C buttons.

- Add quit game option to the pause menu. Also allow you to choose home/away before the game, like the nasty snes version. If both of these were added then you would only have to host once when playing online! And it would make resigning games actually kind of realistic (would be so nice).

I'm gonna think of more, the possibilities are endless

I'm pretty sure you already can do these...or I'm just crazy...

Besides fighting, I would fix that ridiculous bug where the other team's goalie being way out of the net causes your player with an empty net to shoot the puck through the roof of the arena.

That's what I call the "choke bug". It can be pretty gross.

The only BIG thing I'd like to see fixed in GENS is goalie control being acquired instantly (using the B button) instead of the delay.

Oh wait, one more detail I'd like to see fixed. I wish penalties would only be called against you if YOU were controlling the player committing the infraction. So I'd like to see an end to CPU taking penalties.

Lots of good ideas TK. But I like the hook button. And I don't believe in momentum.

ENHANCEMENTS
* Add drop passes
* Add fake Slapshots (hit C again un-does it)

* Add saucer pass when you hold B longer

* Add players being able to block shots (goes along with saucer passes)

* Add deflections in front of net

* Improve AI so forwards with high DA will drop back to cover up for a pinching D-man

* Add 2 player "Best of 7" series option (that tracks stats)

* Add goal celebrations for some flamboyant players (there could be an hidden attribute that determines someones celebration level.... OT goal gives this a bump)

FIXES

* fix goalie force field

* fix goalie invincibilty

*** Regarding these goalie fixes, there is no force field in real life, so there shouldn't be one in the game. And goalies should be able to get checked, and not be some sort of monster that sends a trail of players in their wake. (And of course, checking a goalie should result in a penalty.) Maybe make it so the further out a goalie goes, the shakier they are (less control) and less likely to draw penalties if bumped?

If you could release a patch to fix problems or make things better in the Genesis version of NHL 94 what would you do?

Mikey, I gotta ask, is there any chance of this happening??? (You are the man making the connections, and a guy who gets thing done, so if anyone could facilitate it, it is you!! So I had to ask!)

Or is this just a fantasy scenario???

Everything is a fantasy until acted on :) I like the answers we are getting. In time yes we will be looking into something official.

Everything on this thread is movie related so...for now this is just a thought experiment (But not a waste of time, trust me). I wanted to make you guys think like producers and see what you would change if you had the power too (not so much for an online ROM but for an official release).

For SNES, there aren't a lot of actual gameplay tweaks required (none really), but a lot of extra features that would make the game even more awesome.

-Season Mode

-Fantasy draft

-Both Current teams/rosters and classic NHL '94 teams/rosters available

-Increased number of statistics available (TOI, hits, +/-, shooting %, PPG, SHG, Corsi, etc.)

-NHL Awards (Hart, Norris, Selke, etc.)

-Fighting

-Team specific arena art and team-specific colours in the crowd

These things would make the game so perfect, and I feel like all of these things would be really simple and easy for a seasoned SNES programmer to add..

he doesn't care about the better version, at least for this thread. also, those "fixed" stats wishes that require replacement and/or extraction to collect don't fit the "done" category, in my mind.

I think in today's day and age it is all about online gaming. While we get by with with an ancient emulator that hasnt been updated in almost a decade (GENS), online play could be much improved.

A PC or console based NHL94 release with online play similar to what we have in NHL2015+.

- Season mode

- Detailed stats

- World rankings

- Original ratings for NHL94 mode and updated rankings with new rosters and new teams including roster patches etc.

- Slightly updated graphics (see Crossy Road for AppleTV, still pixelated and true to the roots but much more HD)

- New music in game

-Little changes like - fake slapshot, lifting the stick, hip check. Overall though the gameplay needs very little changed it's more the peripheral features which are lacking.

Definitely all of these.

If we're going with ideas to integrate from current gen console gaming, it would be fun to have some achievements thrown in there. Including the ability to earn community based achievements throughout any given year. (Ex. patch earned for community participation in scoring 5,000 pass shots in 1 week)... could be fun

Forum Members should be secret players that can be unlocked by pressing certain button combos, NBA Jam style!

e.g. Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Select Start will get you KingRaph on the NY Rangers.

HAHA Awesome!

Speaking of NBA Jam - Tips n Tricks - (forgive me, I'm just trying to recall this from memory) On arcade version, hold down-right on P1 stick while holding all buttons on P1 & P2 to unlock secret tank battle game... if you survive the game for specified amount of time, you'll hear a knock sound and you will return to tip off with all players having juiced up skills.

I do like that pressing C on a faceoff will check, though.

Really though nhl 94 is totally perfect the way it is. These ideas are awesome, but a lot of them could mess up the amazing balance that this game has.

The real dream would be the gameplay being untouched, with a bunch of these great non gameplay-related ideas being implemented.

NHL 94 on modern consoles or PC with an online option, what a world that would be

I would like more customization. Such as the ability to save a non line change line and a line change set up for all 30 teams instead of 1.

I would also like to be able to adjust the computers lines as well so they are more optimized. No more Goulet on line 1 Chicago without line changes and no more Basil Mcrae on line 1 St. Louis with line changes on.

I would love to be able to have custom teams so I can create international teams and a have a tournament format.

If season mode did make it into NHL 94 somehow I would I go nuts over an expansion draft mode comparable to the one in NHL 99. I would love being able to take a realistic scrub squad to the cup and get guys like Mick Vukota some good run.

The ability to have a 4th line would be cool too. Even if its just to double shift some guys so I have easy access to an all-star line 1 if I decided to spread out my scoring over the first three lines.

Dip switches would also be good. Street fighter three third strike online version had all sorts of dip switches that allowed a person to pick and choose the best parts from all three versions of street fighter 3 and have the game play that way. Some example dip switches would be one-timers (on, aim assist, off), fighting (on or off), penalties for injuries (on or off), game speed (92, 93, or 94), goalie AI (92, 93, 94), post frequency ( 92, 93, 94), and on and on and on.

Any cool touches to make the home ice of each team more tailored to the actual team would be cool (more organ music, specific goal horns, maybe just a bit more detail on the ice specifying which building the game is taking place in.
