New Instant Messaging & Voice Chat setup - Discord

Recommended Posts

Playing games against other people on nhl94.com is usually set up with instant messaging.

Discord is a messaging, group chat, and voice chat system created for gamers.

Here is a quick illustrated guide on setting it up. It's super easy. It's broken up into 5 short parts (but you only need to do the first 3):

  1. Create an Account
  2. Join the NHL'94 Discord Server
  3. How to use the web browser interface
  4. How to install the desktop software (Windows or Mac)
  5. How to install the mobile software (Android or Apple)

You don't need to install the software (steps 4 and/or 5) if you don't want to, but as you get addicted to NHL'94 online you'll probably find it more convenient to use the software :)

Please let me know if you have any difficulties or ideas for improving the instructions

1. Create an Account

  1. Go to https://discordapp.com/register and register with a real email address (you need to verify the email address).
  2. Please use your forum name for your Username.
  3. post-253-0-33560000-1477454688_thumb.png
  4. After entering your registration information, you'll be immediately brought to a page that says "WELCOME TO DISCORD, <USERNAME>"
  5. Click "Skip" instead of "Get Started":
  6. post-253-0-49499700-1477454731_thumb.png
  7. After Skipping, you may see a "What's New" announcement page similar to the following. Just click the grey X to close it:

  9. Congrats, you're ready to use Discord's web interface! Here's what it looks like:

Bonus steps:

  1. Check your email for the verification email
  2. Click the link in the email to verify the account.
  3. If you don't verify your account, you may not be able to post messages in the chat room, etc.

2. Join the NHL'94 Discord Server

This is basically the chat room.

  1. Click this link to initiate the invitation to the server: https://discordapp.com/invite/0por6zfp5RodSFVL
  2. You'll see this page, asking you to accept the invitation to the group:
  3. post-253-0-23595200-1477454930_thumb.png
  4. Click "Accept Invite"
  5. It'll quickly cycle through some screens ("launching discord app", "recruiting robot hamsters"...) and then you'll be back in the web interface, but now you'll be in the NHL 94 server:
  6. post-253-0-35675500-1477454950_thumb.png
  7. You can see the other people in the server on the right side.
  8. The center area has some introductory info, and then if you scroll down you can see the current conversation.
  9. The left side has the chat channels (#general, #gdl, etc...)
  10. You may hear people talking... You can mute the voice chat by clicking the headphones near the bottom-left of the screen beside your username.

If you want to see a more happenin' Server, check out the Tecmo Super Bowl server: https://discord.gg/0bTEaH3dmy3Dzsgq

3. How to Use the Web Browser Interface

If you've just followed steps 1 and 2, you should already be in the web interface in your browser.

I'll add more here later, or maybe break it out into a separate post.

4. How to Install the Desktop Software (Windows or Mac)

I've only got a Windows computer, so that's all I'm showing here so far.
  1. Go to https://discordapp.com/download and it should detect your operating system.
  2. Click Download Now
  3. Save DiscordSetup.exe to a location on your computer (Downloads or Desktop for example)
  4. Run DiscordSetup.exe (Select "Run" if it asks you if you want to run the file)
  5. The installation takes a little while before you see anything happen.
  6. Discord does not ask where to install, it just installs to a default location (C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Local\Discord)
  7. After 30-60 seconds the Discord GUI will appear, with a splash screen, and then a "WELCOME BACK" screen:

  9. Log in with your email address and password and you're in! (If you get the What's New screen, click the X. If you get the "WELCOME TO DISCORD" screen, click "Skip" instead of "Get Started")

5. How to install the mobile software (Android or Apple)

  1. Search for Discord in your app store / play store. It will be called "Discord - Chat for Gamers". (Android link) (iOS link)
  2. Install it
  3. Log in with your email address and password
  4. You need to navigate to the NHL 94 server:
  5. Click the three lines / settings / hamburger icon in the top-left.
  6. (no screenshot yet)
  7. Click "N94"
  8. Swipe to the left to hide the server selection pane.
  9. You should see the #general chat:

I'm just going to bump this so people will notice this more easily.

Et tu Brute has already been running in discord for a while and there are 46 members connected to the NHL94 server. After using Discord for a while I can say that It's easy to use. I'm only running discord in a browser and don't have any apps installed. Just need to create the account and use the join link below. I like the chat as well and the dark theme it has (you can change to a lighter one from settings as well).

For me this is much better than AIM and as there are a lot of communities under it, it's probably easier to find other retro gamers who already have an account to discord if just put an effort to it. In some other communities Discord has taken the place of IRC.

Absolutely, Discord is overall the best option for Gamers. Wheather you are gaming or streaming your games online like on YouTube, then Discord pops out as an option to fulfill all the necessities regarding communication while gaming. With its best features and performance gamers can communicate while playing as a squad or in many numbers. I use this software while I play any group games with my friends.
