NFL'58.nes
NFL'58juiced.nes

60 years ago the NFL Season that would end with the "Greatest Game Ever Played" began.

What you get:
2 versions (Original and Fully Juiced)

The 12 NFL Teams from 1958.
All modeled and properly matched to an Original TSB Team.
Baltimore Colts = SF (Unitas = Montana, Lenny Moore = Jerry Rice)
New York Giants = NYG (Sam Huff = LT (but moved to ILB)
Cleveland Browns = RAI (Jim Brown = Bo Jackson)
Los Angeles Rams = RAM
Chicago Bears = CHI
Pittsburgh Steelers = MIN
Washington Redskins = NO
San Francisco 49ers = NO
Chicago Cardinals = JETS
Detroit Lions = JETS
Philadelphia Eagles = GB
Green Bay Packers = GB (Lombardi arrives in 1959, but many of the pieces of the dynasty are already in place)
The correct 12 game 1958 schedule with correct dates. (Including Saturdays and Thanksgiving)
An Old Fashioned Grass Field free from any distractions, logos, or colors.
No Overtime.
No Large Helmets (I don't get them or know how to move them so I just blanked them out)
1991 Mini Helmets in proper locations.
Accurate Rosters with numbers and skin color.
Accurate Pro Bowl Rosters.
Plus truly Original Game Play, as I have added "ZERO Gameplay Hacks"
We love this game because they got it right, even with the minor imperfections.

What you don't get:

Accurate Divisions.
In 1958 the NFL had 2 six team divisions East and West.
I couldn't do that so I made 3 four team divisions.
Below I list my Divisions followed by the actual 1958 the Team played in.
EAST                               CENTRAL                       WEST
Cleveland East          Chicago Bears West    Baltimore  West
New York East           Detroit West                   Chicago Cardinals East
Philly East                    Green Bay West            Los Angeles West
Washington East      Pittsburgh East            San Francisco West

Accurate Playoffs in 1958 the NFL Post season consisted of one Championship Game of the East Champion vs the West Champion.
I had to go with 4 teams.  The 3 Division Champs and a Wild Card.
If you win the "NFL Championship"  The Final Game will be the "Tecmo Bowl" vs a 1991 TSB Team.

The last 5 years of the Great Pennant Race Years.

The WS was played in early October.
Each rom contains the Top 4 AL teams and the Top 6 NL teams.

RBI is a very fun and simple game to Edit.
I plan to release many more.

Contact = Batting AVG.
Lower is better.

<.175 = 64
.175-.199 = 40
.200-.224 = 30
.225-.249 = 25
.250-.274 = 20
.275-.299 = 15
.300-.324 = 10
>.325 = 5
Power = Home Runs
Higher is better.
0= 700 or 640 for pitchers
1 = 710
and each Homer up to 10 is worth 10 points, so
10 = 800
and then each Homer is worth 5 points, so
20 = 850
30 = 900
40 = 950
and then each Homer is worth 1 point, so
61 = 971
Speed = Stolen bases
Higher is better.
0 = 120
1 =121
and each steal up to 10 is worth 1 point, so
10 = 130
then each 5 steals is worth 1 point.

Pitching
Sink/Curve = ERA
Higher is better.
<2.00 = 10/10/10
<3.00 = 8/8/8
<4.00 = 6/6/6
<5.00 = 4/4/4

Higher is better.

7 = 210
6 = 205
5 = 195
4 =190
3 = 185
2 = 180
1 = 175

TEAM DEFENSE = Team Fielding Percentage
Lower is Better.

Top 2 Teams = 4
3 and 4 = 6
5 and 6 = 8
7 and 8 = 10
9 and 10 = 12

Awesome, Coach!  Great job!  Can't wait to try them out.  Especially the WBF CLlassic one! (I mean, being WBF it is going to be like what must have been really intended? Time for Pittsburgh to shine!)

NIce Work!!! Way above  and beyond the call of duty!  Heck, I am going to try my hand at Maple Leafs vs Charleson CPU right now, WBF style! Clark is gonna kick ass!!!!

Wow, I played a 7 game series TOR vs Charleston!!! I won 4-2!  That is right, the CPU won 2 games!

This is way better than playing crap teams against CPU Chi with my goalie pulled, and all the other weird things I used to do to get a decent CPU game.

Also, I can't believe, again, how amazing the AI is in this ancient game.  The juiced defense in unbelievable, and some of the one timers the CPU forwards score are outrageous.  One of these juiced teams should have been in the original game.  Makes the replay-abilty so much higher...

I am actually going to post my series on NHL94rocks.com and you can see the stats.  Without looking, I think they pass as much as a human, and check much better.  THey also take more shots and one timers.

And yeah, goalies are way better than Belfour.  On normal CPU, I score about > 80% of my dekes, but on the juiced goalies, it is more like 20%.  When I am lucky enough to make it to the net, that is!! Really loving the games, Coach!  Seriosuly!

I don't know enough about OA and DA effects... (I think people disagree about what they do, no?)  So I can't give advice there. :(  I have read that having DA higher than OA makes for stay at home D-men, but I am not really sure?  But whatever makes the D-men stay back, that will be the prferred setting. (I feel like it is good already, but when the stats are up on nhl94rocks, we will see if the D-men get points or not...)

I will say because the guys are so quick and heavy, and check so well, the D is tough as is.  I think I did start to figure out how to skate around them as I kept playing, but if they get near you, you will wind up on your butt.

Similarly, when I was first deeking against the goalie, I was not scoring, where I usually do against CPU.  I found I have to hold the puck longer and shoot more obliquely to have a chance to score on a deke.  Most of my goals are coming on classic slap shots, like when Clark skates right to left, and does his hard left handed slap shot from 15 feet out.  One timers for me are rare so far, but do happen.

I get most of my goals in this order, most to least:
1. slappers from skating across net
2. dekes
3. one-timers
4. glitchy goals

I include glitchy goals because I have yet to score more than 5 or 6 goals in a game, and usually score 2 or 3, so I appreciate a glitch here and there where some funny rebounds or bobbling happens...

Ha, sounds good, Coach.

I just played Leafs vs Charleston again, and swept them.  Sort of discovered an easy-ish way to score in the last game.  Just do a classic crease cut.  Even that juiced goalie flops like a moron and leaves a yawning cage.  When I play solo I am going to avoid doing this cheap move to keep it fun.

Also got better at the deke and one timers.  Scoring on 40% of dekes now.

Love thse ROMs!

The mix of history (capturing the look and feel of an era) and fantasy (creating a new mix of years and a new solitaire experience) is a work of art!

Thank you!

I am glad you are enjoying them.
And appreciate what I am trying to create.

I love making them.
It is like a walk thru history for me.

I have some more features and ideas coming down the pipe.

The game is much more fun to play against the computer now.:big_smile:

  • 3 weeks later...

I love your ideas for retro solitaire play.

One idea that I am working on in an 80s rom is to "supe up" 3 out of 5 teams in every division (4 out of 6 in the Patrick).  Then I play with 1 of the 2 "regular" teams (the other regular team is left out of the playoff draws).  Suped up teams have higher everything, especially shot accuracy and goaltending, but the "Super 6" teams ("juiced" teams) with almost all 99 players are the 80s Oilers, Islanders, Flames, Flyers, Bruins, and Blackhawks.  (The 80s Canadiens would be a juiced team, but I made them "regular" since I personally like to play as them.)

I also lower the goalie ratings for any team I use - the computer needs to score more often.

The 80s rom could also include the Miracle on Ice matchup as well as the '87 Canada Cup matchup I love (Wayne + Mario vs. Soviets).

Personal Touches:  My own team, the Pens, are a blend of the 87-89 teams when the Pens added some good players but still had a bunch of unheard-of players playing with Mario.  Obviously, this is for me, but this team could be made more "realistic" for others.

My bonus teams are going to be my own roller hockey teams over the years (again obviously just part of own personal use), but I have no idea how to do center ice logos and know nothing about coding.

Coach, when you do edits to the ROMs like i saw at the top when ur March post was EDITED to Mondays date, can you post in this topic what changes you made in each ROM, meaning if u were to make changes to the 73 ROM is it possible to write down a note saying what has changed from one date to the updated date?

Yes, Good points.

Please realize that I am insane.

Usually it is very slight ratings tweaks or Graphical improvements.

Unfortunately, I can't go back and remember, but I will do what you have asked moving forward.
