The Wings got their first victory of the season powered by a flu-ridden Steve Yzerman. The undisputed leader of Detroit carried the Wings on his weary back as he scored a season high 4 goals in the win. Overall the game was a see-saw battle with the score tied up on three different occasions. But with under 2 minutes to go, Yzerman, who was using an IV drip before the game and drinking fluids heavily between periods, notched the hat trick on a one-timer from RW Dallas Drake. Almost immediately afterwards, goalie Cheveldae almost blew the lead by making an errant pass in his own zone, that led to a half empty net opportunity for the Nords, but the flip of the puck towards the net went just wide. Stevie Y who was calm and collected despite the flu-bug and Quebec's repeated comeback attempts put the game on ice with 40 seconds to go, scoring his fourth and final goal. Drake had Detroit's first goal on a play of sheer determination where he took two point blank shots consecutively, then stripped the puck from Quebec's defender, took another point blank shot, and then finally scored on the rebound.

Team representatives refuted the allegations by the press that the IV drip contained any illegal substances.
