Looking for NHL95 2on2 or 3on3 mod

Hi all.  Has anyone ever done an nhl95 mod with 2 on 2 or 3 on 3?  My friend and I have been playing a mixture of all the NHL games lately and I would love to play 95 with a little less chaos because sometimes it's impossible to set up any plays with all those bodies on the small ice.  If not.  Deft a request!!

(I'm talking Gens so hopefully that was what you had in mind.)

I don't know if a full mod like this has been done for 95 yet but I do know it's possible. The "End of the World" ROM has a few teams with only one player and I'm guessing this was accomplished the same way it's done in 94 ROMs.

Ultra-Magnus can explain better than I on that, though.

Isn't 95 the year that they added different "variants" through practice mode?

EDIT: There is. Go through practice mode, and it should be there. Haven't touched it in a while, so can't give exact instructions.

  • smozoma changed the title to Looking for NHL95 2on2 or 3on3 mod

Please use descriptive titles for posts in the future :). I changed it to "Looking for NHL95 2on2 or 3on3 mod". You had set it to your name, which doesn't give readers an idea of what the post is about.

This is probably possible to do using the NOSE tool. Just set the unwanted players on the Lines to the "invalid" value in the dropdown.

I can confirm that this is "possible".

The caveat however is that you will need to do a bit more to the ROM to prevent the game from crashing when it's trying to access those non-existent players in the Pre-Game Scouting Report or Line Editor menu.

I guess it might depend if your play style is to ignore all of that.

I've done some testing on it. It will work. Just as @von Ozbourmeand @smozomamentioned. But reducing the team sizes helps with doing it. Especially, limiting say to 3 defencemen and 9 forwards or 6 forwards. Also knowing that in the in-game settings for the lines is to edit out 2 of the positions you don't want. Ie LW and LD. This will also have to be edited in NOSE with putting Invalid or Hex 0 player. The player cards always mess up in 95. So having them as the team logos would help reduce the overall impact of having to cycle through to see them as you would be aware of the impact of they had player cards with faces.

Easiest way is simplfy...

No player cards with faces

Reduce team rosters to 10-11 players including goalies.

HxD the none used positions to reflect in-game line editing and Hex 0 those positions in NOSE.

I'll post one of these updates in the next few days. Starting with my NHL reloaded ROM.

So, good news and bad news.

Good news - 3on3, 2on2 can work in the game.

Bad news - not able to change lines as the game freezes. Can't cycle through the player cards...the game freezes. Even used the "Hex 0" setting for the none used players and it works to play the game, but not change lines and cycle player cards.

So, if you know the lines and would prefer that setting and apply it in NOSE without going in out of the lineup that would be the only go around right now. Needs further testing. Unless there is something in the game that can prompt it to allow cycling the cards, and editing lines with something in the "practice mode".

Mags - hit me up over the weekend (as I'm not available today).  I accomplished doing these things, you mention as hinderances, in my 3v3 for NHL94.  I have the following in my latest 3v3 rom:

*4 player potraits (2 FWD, 1D, 1G) without freezing, on the Ron Barr page, for each team.  Also cycles as 4 players (instead of 6) on the main team selection page.
*Line changes within the game or in NOSE
*4v3 PPs (now you can edit the 4 PP players in the game vs having to do so in NOSE)

My guess is, without knowing the programming logics of 95, you'll have the same or similiar methodology to employ for 95.  I could be wrong but I can certainly let you know what I have done to see if it translates to what you are trying to do.  There are some Hex changes that have to be made to accomodate what is done in NOSE.

Cheers!

line changes and player cards were a no-no in 2on2 NHL94 too (although I did make a hack to fix line changes..)

That's one of the hacks that I use.  I have some others for the players cards, 4v3 PPs and relabeling of stuff.

Will do. It would be great to have the 3on3 or 2on2 for NHL95. Give more options for everyone who enjoys the games.

Cheers

Ultramagnus sent me his initial edit on the 3 on 3 rom.   It's not finished but after playing for about 3 minutes, this is without a doubt my favorite new way to play classic NHL.

I swear the game feels smoother.  There is more room to set up plays and the passing seems to work better.  It's the perfect way to play against a friend.  The addition of the drop pass and better goalie control means a more competitive game with less generic scoring.  Honestly, so far it's great!  You need to keep going on this one Ultramagnus.  I grew up playing all the NHL games and this current hacked up 3 on 3 95 ROM might be my new fave!

Cheers!
