GENS Playoff Scene

Recommended Posts

So the season appears to be drawing to a close; the only teams that haven't played at least 30 games, save a select few, are the ones that aren't playoff-bound.

GENS A - Wales Division

The top two in this one are set, with Hartford and Washington having both locked up their division and thus a playoff spot. Philadelphia have also clinched a birth in the postseason, and with the Rangers slumping and having played 9-10 games less than most currently playoff-bound teams (Exception: Hartford), it won't be a race much longer.

A - Campbell

The surprise here is that on the fact that St. Louis holds at least 9 games in hand over every playoff team, only Winnipeg has officially clinched a playoff berth. The eye here is on the Central Division, as Chicago are two points ahead of Detroit with 7 games left, and Detroit has a game in hand. The magic number for Chicago right now is 64 points - meaning that they would need to win the remainder of their games currently - but of course that number decreases with every Red Wings loss or tie. The Jets have run away with the Northwest this year, so no contest there.

Edit: With strong performances coupled with St. Louis losses, Chicago and Detroit have clinched playoff berths. Chicago have three games remaining, all against the Blues, while Detroit hold two games in hand having four against Calgary and one against Montreal. Chicago require six points to clinch the Central Division, however, Detroit losses would help them greatly as they still currently have to win the remainder of their games to achieve the magic number.

Another Edit: With a split four-game series against Calgary, the Red Wings are now OUT of divisional contention. Chicago have clinched the Central and at least second place.

B - Wales

GENS B is completely different. Wales Conference playoff futures are up in the air, with Buffalo, the Rangers and Pittsburgh vying for the top spot. Divisionally, the Rangers hold a four point edge on the Penguins, but the Penguins have five games in hand. Buffalo in the Northeast hold four games in hand over second-place Quebec who happen to be six points back, with Quebec down to their last gasp for the division - one loss or one Buffalo win prevents them from winning the division. However, with five games in hand over Buffalo, a Sabres slump coupled with a streak for Montreal could bring the Canadiens knocking on the door. Buffalo are in a 3-game slump as it is, so look for the race to get tight if Montreal pick it up down the stretch.

Edit: Pittsburgh have surpassed the Rangers for tops in the Atlantic. Quebec really need to pick it up and win games as well as spike the goal count, or they're out of it. A strong Boston performance now has them in the thick of things, with 6 games in hand over leader Buffalo, they have more than enough to be able to tie or even beat the Sabres for the division. Wales is heating up, and this one is going to go down to the wire.

B - Campbell

No contest here. Chicago ran away with the conference and Vancouver ran away with their division. St. Louis and Winnipeg have also clinched playoff berths, and no one else has for the sheer fact that Los Angeles have 18 games remaining in their schedules.

Edit: St. Louis, Winnipeg and Toronto have just picked up playoff spots, and Edmonton need at least a tie or a Kings loss or tie to assure a berth in the postseason. Edmonton seem to be on the good end of quirks though, they seem to be ahead of Toronto even though Toronto have two more points than them.

Did I officially clinch a playoff spot? :D

When I wrote that bit the magic number was 38, you had 40. You're now at 44 points yet Edmonton are ahead of you with 38.

Here's a bit of an update...

Gens A Campbell: Vancouver lock up a playoff spot, but Los Angeles are still on the bubble, finishing two points shy of the magic number. Two Calgary losses will do it for them though.

Edit: Toronto and Los Angeles are now in, Dallas are on the edge. The race between Edmonton and Calgary heats up now, but the Flames have four games in hand on the Oilers, so that's a definite advantage as the Flames are placed in 8th on goal difference. The race for first looks to be a race to the finish, as Chicago and Winnipeg each have played 37 games and have totaled 58 standings points. Chicago's remaining games are against St. Louis, while the Jets have a date with the seemingly unstoppable Whalers as well as two games against the Blues. It can safely be said that the Jets have a tougher time, as a loss to the Whalers will be disastrous if forfeit wins come into play.

B Wales: Looking to have the season finished up on the weekend, the Wales teams are no closer to any clinching as they were a week before. It looks like this one will be decided wholly on forfeits.

Edit: Pittsburgh have just clinched a playoff berth with an 8-1 win over Philadelphia.

B Campbell: Edmonton clinch a playoff berth, only Detroit and Calgary aren't out of the woods yet. Also, congratulations to addisonbr for taking the Blackhawks to a Presidents' Trophy.

The playoffs are starting to be set. Chicago will finish first, Vancouver second, and St. Louis third. The race is now for fourth and fifth - Winnipeg and Toronto are fighting for that last home-playoff spot. Toronto have three games in hand on Winnipeg, but look for that series to be a good one. The only way Edmonton will have a playoff series against Vancouver, as they cannot finish lower than 7th, is if Calgary pull off an amazing 11-game win streak, but the chances of that are slim.
